Leadership Definition Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of leadership definition can be a challenging yet rewarding task.
The difficulty lies not only in the broad scope of the topic but also in the need to encapsulate the
multifaceted nature of leadership within a confined structure.
Defining leadership involves delving into various aspects such as personal traits, skills, styles,
and the contextual nature of leadership. To create a comprehensive essay, one must navigate
through the intricate web of theories, historical examples, and contemporary perspectives on
leadership. The challenge is not only to articulate a personal interpretation but also to synthesize
a range of perspectives, considering the evolving nature of leadership in different contexts.
Furthermore, the process requires a delicate balance between theory and practical examples. It
demands a nuanced understanding of leadership's dynamic nature, acknowledging that effective
leadership varies across situations and individuals. Crafting a compelling essay involves more
than just presenting information; it requires the ability to analyze, critique, and draw insightful
conclusions.
Moreover, capturing the essence of leadership goes beyond a mere dictionary definition. It
necessitates delving into the nuances of influence, inspiration, motivation, and the ethical
dimensions of leading others. Balancing a theoretical foundation with real-world examples
requires extensive research and critical thinking.
Assembling coherent arguments and maintaining a logical flow throughout the essay is another
layer of complexity. Leadership encompasses a vast array of subtopics, each deserving attention.
Thus, organizing thoughts in a manner that resonates with the reader while adhering to academic
conventions can be a formidable task.
In conclusion, writing a leadership definition essay demands a profound understanding of the
topic, meticulous research, critical thinking, and the ability to synthesize diverse perspectives. It
is a challenging endeavor that requires both analytical and expressive skills to capture the essence
of leadership comprehensively.
For those seeking assistance in navigating this challenging task, various resources are available.

Charles Baxter s The Art Of Subtext
A story is only as good as the way it is told. The way a writer uses his or her words
to say something is just as important as what they don t say. Charles Baxter, author
of plethora of books and university teacher, writes a craft book that goes deeper than
the surface of writing and deeper than the words written down. In Charles Baxter s
The Art of Subtext, he discusses how authors can use the words they do write just as
much to express what they don t write.
The first chapter, The Art of Staging claims Staging in fictioninvolves putting
characters in specific strategic positions in the scene so that some unvoiced nuance is
revealed. (Baxter 13) This includes the character s standing positions, their proximity
to each other, specific gestures and facial expressions, which give the reader more
insight to the scene and the characters without explicitly saying so. This goes hand in
hand with the setting of the atmosphere where atmosphere sets the dominant tone or
the mood of a story. The atmosphere can be in reference to the setting or the
characters themselves. Here, the reader is to read between the lines. The key to this
is using a lot of detail which is crucial to providing the information.
This is something important that I need to incorporate in my own writing. More
detail in my writing concerning the unspoken things will allow the reader to see the
evolution of the narrator s state of mind. A twitch of an eye or how close my
antagonist stands to his or her
Carbon Monoxide Pathogenesis
Carbon monoxide, which is essentially produced through the enzymatic actions of
heme oxygenase (HO), appears to have as similar biochemical properties as NO.
Activation of guanylyl cyclase produces high levels of c GMP, and this was
attributed to the actions of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide acts as a
physiological vasodilator in hepatic microcirculation. In contrast, up regulated
inducible HO 1 mRNA expression was detected in the right ventricle in animal
model of congestive heart failure. Increased carbon monoxide levels are frequently
found in cirrhotic patients. Experimental evidence also suggests this substance may
be implicated in CCM pathogenesis. This is largely based on the finding of the
elevated HO 1 mRNA and protein expression... Show more content on

A hallmark in the pathogenesis is the pronounced splanchnic arterial vasodilatation
and reduced systemic vascular resistance (SVR) (MГёller and, Henriksen, 2008). In
this setting, cardiac pressures are largely normal, at least in part, because the reduced
after load protects systolic function. This circulatory state resembles certain high
output states resulting from increased blood volume and defined as a hyperdynamic
unloaded failure of the heart. The distinction is that the hyperdynamic circulation in
cirrhosis is due to the low SVR and increased arterial compliance (Timoh et al., 2011).
Administration of vasoconstrictors, such as angiotensin II and terlipressin, increases
the SVR and thereby the left ventricular afterload unmasking a latent left ventricular
dysfunction in cirrhosis. On the other hand, vasodilators, like angiotensin converting
enzyme inhibitors and other afterload reducing agents, should be used cautiously due
to the risk of more aggravation of the vasodilatory state (Krag et al., 2010). Diagnosis

Mortgage Crisis Essays
Abstract
In my research you will find that I outlined the cause and effect of the mortgage
crisis. I also speak on the falling housing prices due to the mortgage crisis and the
domino effect that will be created on and for the economy. I will also speak on the
foreclosure rates caused by sub prime loans and no fall back plan to help in the case
of the mortgagor defaults.
The Mortgage Crisis
Thesis Statement:
The mortgage crisis that has caused house prices to fall and foreclosures to occur
across the United States will create the need to alter the financial mortgage industry
policies; as the impact it has can go as far as causing a consumer recession due to the
low unemployment rate, rising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mortgage crisis is simply one side of the coin.
The main cause of the mortgage crisis is the changes in policy for the mortgage
industry. In the past, a fixed mortgage was the prime form of lending. All mortgages
have the same payments for the mortgage duration and a large down payment was
essential. The calculation of the mortgage was based on the initial amount borrowed,
and house assessment rather than the rising value of the income and the house over
the years.
In order to encourage people to buy more houses and boost the real estate market, the
homebuilders, financial lenders, and the government created new financial
instruments of calculation that were not researched properly. Lenders sold
mortgages to investors that allowed the risk of default to be covered even though
the mortgage was in a financial stretch for the borrower. Borrowers did not read the
fine print and made decisions that they could not afford. The major banks Federal and
otherwise, kept the interest rates low causing investors to take risks to get high
returns in the short term, disregarding the long terms security of the whole process.
The result was sub prime borrowers could buy houses they could not afford and
prime borrowers could have extra cash flow that in normal circumstances would not
have been possible, allowing lenders to make bigger plans in terms of growth etc.
The housing epidemic created a false market boom that drove prices up as consumer
demands grew.
Examples Of Naturalism In The Call Of The Wild
In Conclusion, American naturalism is a vital scholarly pattern and it is compelling
to authenticity furthermore innovation. As a popular author, London had essential
influence in the naturalistic pattern, and he made extraordinary commitment to the
world s artistic history. He was firmly affected by Darwin s hypothesis of
advancement. The determinism and the big fish gobble up the little, the fittest
survive hypothesis of naturalismare plainly indicated in the novel. The Call of the
Wild uncovered the embodiment of humans life: from the general public point of
view, there is by all accounts one and only law in this world, which both men also,
brutes obey just the fittest can make due in the emphatically aggressive world. Buck s

The First Battle Of Bull Run Essay
THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN
On July 21, 1861, two armies, one confederate and the other Union, prepared for the
first major land battle of the Civil War. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as
President.
The Southern states had seceded and the South had fired on and captured Fort Sumter
on April 12 1861.
After the Fort Sumter battle, both the North and the South began preparing for war
by raising armies. This was done quickly and neither side spent much time training
the troops. Both sides also did not know what a long and terrible war was ahead.
The first Battle of Bull Run took place near Manassas Junction, Virginia, an important
railroad junction twenty five ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Confederates at Manassas knew far ahead of this action due to many Southern
spies in Washington. The Southern troops spread in lines along eight miles of Bull
Run Creek. The heaviest Southern troops were on a ridge around Henry House. After
a few skirmishes, the Union Army arrived at Bull Run on July 21, 1861.
As the Union Army approached Bull Run, General Johnston s army faked an attack
at Harpers Ferry. As the 18,000 Union troops dug in for assault, the Southern forces
jumped on rail cars and headed for Bull Run to reinforce the Confederate Army.
General McDonnell attempted to flank the Confederates by moving north and west,
and began several attacks on the Confederates right flank and the center of the
Confederate line at Henry House.
As the battle wore on, the superior numbers of the Union Army began to wear
down the Confederate lines. At a critical point, as the Confederates began to fall
back, an officer pointed out a line of rebels who were still strong. He said, look at
Jackson s men standing like a stone wall . He was talking about General T. J.
Jackson s men. Jackson would from then on be known as Stonewall Jackson , one of
the most famous of all Confederate generals. This seemed to inspire the Southern

Night Father s Relationship
The novel Night is written by Elie Wiesel, who is a Holocaust survivor. In this
novel he writes about his experience through the concentration camps which
involved the death of his family and close friends. One of the most painful
thoughts throughout the book was his relationship with his father and how it
changed over time. From the beginning it was just Elie and his father. During their
journey, his father became more dependent on Elie. It was particularly hard for
him to care for his father while watching many other young boys disown their
fathers and leave them to die. His father became weaker every day and it was a
struggle to sit back and watch, because there really was nothing he could do to have
saved him in the end. One of the
Analysis Of Total Eclipse By Annie Dillard
Description Essay Total Eclipse By Annie Dillard
Annie Dillard s Total Eclipse depicts her own existential crisis while watching the
1979 solar eclipse. Using metaphors and Stream of Consciousness Writing she details
her own dissociative hallucination.
She begins her work by describing her morning, comparing it to an avalanche, It had
been like dying, She wrote. that sliding down the mountain pass. It had been like the
death of someone, irrational, that sliding down the mountain pass and into the region
of dread. IT was like slipping into fever, or falling down that hole in sleep from
which you wake yourself whimpering. Setting the tone for the essay, death and
irrational thoughts filling her mind as it unfolds around her. She compares the
avalanche to death, foreshadowing her own avalanche, an avalanche of the mind. Her
own avalanche happens while she is standing outside on a mountain, watching the
eclipse with her husband. She slips into a dissociative delusion, writing, I looked at
Gary; He was in the film. Everything was lost, He was a platinum print, a dead artist
s version of life. I saw on his skull the darkness of night mixed with the colors of day.
My mind was going out; my eyes where receding the way galaxies recede to the rim
of space. Gary was light years away, gesturing inside a circle of darkness, down the
wring end of a telescope. He smiled as if he saw me; the stringy crinkles around his
eyes moved. The sight of him, familiar and wrong,
The Marble Champ
Never give up. Always keep going. Try hard. Practice makes perfect. The Marble
Champ by Gary Soto is a great story. A girl named Lupe is not good at sports but
she finds something athletic that she could be good at. She found marbles. She
practiced until she got so good, she won the marbles championship. For this matter,
I think a possible theme in this story is to never give, just like Lupe did. A couple
reasons why, are because she practices, perseveres, and always gives 100% effort.
To begin, one reason why a possible theme could be to never give up is Lupe
practices. At the beginning of the story Lupe did fingertip pushups. She did 20 of
them in sets of five, so every so often she could take a break. This seems like a lot
to ask from someone who isn t that strong. She also squeezed a eraser for a long
time. From doing this she got so good she beat Alfonso. Alfonso was a
neighborhood kid who was really good at marbles, but Lupe got so good she beat
him! In the story it says, Man, she s bad! Alfonso said. She can beat the other girls
for sure. I think. This was right after Lupe beat Alfonso, and he was one of the best
at marbles. Another reason is Lupe only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Persevere means to keep trying even if you have failed. One example, is that even
in marbles when Lupe missed a shot she didn t let it get her, and make her quit, this
shows that she wants to keep going and continue, not quit. Secondly, she wasn t good
at sports. Instead of just thinking she wouldn t be good at something athletic. She
tried. In the story it says, She could not catch a pop up figure in which direction to
kick the soccer ball. Instead, she at least put in effort to try and get good at something
athletic. Finally, In the marble championship Lupe was going up against a girl that
looked tough, but Lupe didn t turn around and walk away. She faced the girl. Lupe

Autobiographical Statement Essay
A few years ago I found myself on a train heading from Amsterdam to Hamburg. I
had just spent several days traveling through the Netherlands and was going to end
my fall break trip in Germany. The cities I picked had been arbitrary. All I knew
was that in the three and a half months I was studying abroad I would see as much
of the world as possible. This often meant frantically searching the internet for cheap
flights, bus tickets, and hostiles, and only getting to spend a day or two in a
magnificent city. This also meant traveling alone. As I relaxed in my seat and
scribbled postcards to my friends and parents, I was at the most peace I had ever
been. It was not without chaos though. I had taken the wrong tram that morning, been
unable... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I had to learn to find and trust my community. That peace and serenity I felt on a
bumpy train ride stayed with me as a constant reminder of the peace possible in the
world. Having dealt with such a mind consuming illness I am often envious of those
that need not be mindful of every moment and event of every day in order to
survive. However, I know that my increased awareness also makes my life that much
brighter. It allows me to see and feel other people s pain. It has allowed me to help
others through the same difficult times I once faced. My recovery was all about
balance and my life continues to be about that same sense of equilibrium. About
working hard and playing hard. About spending time alone, running, meditating,
dancing, or writing and by engaging in conversation, debating, embracing, dancing
(with others), and attending worship. About taking part in extracurricular activities,
academics, and volunteering and still giving myself time to have coffee with a friend
or read alone in the park. Growing up Catholic and attending parochial school from
kindergarten through my senior year of high school meant that religion was constantly
around me. However, in contrast to this academic setting, God was absent from my
daily life. Although they sent me to a Catholic school and insisted I attend mass
every Sunday, my parents never once mentioned God, prayer, or spirituality within
the home. These
Steve Jobs And Fred Shuttlesworth
How These Two Men,That Died on the Same Day, Affected Your Life
I took a look back in history, I came across a couple of men that died on the same
day. Both of these men have had a great impact on us all. They are responsible for
changes that have happened in times of segregation, to a more current time
surrounded by IPhones. Steve Jobs and Fred Shuttlesworth are responsible for these
changes that have created the world as we know it today. Although, both men were
phenomenal at what they did, one will always be better. Fred Shuttlesworth fought
for life changing outcomes. He was a blunt, driven, and confrontational man, and
maybe the reason you are allowed to be where you are today. Steve Jobs and Fred
Shuttlesworth were both hard working individuals, that made their dreams come to
life. Although, they may be similar in a lot of ways, their impact on the world was
very different.
Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California. Steve Jobs
showed an early interest in electronics and was mentored by a neighbor, who was
an electronic hobbyist. In only the eighth grade, Steve was assembling a frequency
counter and noticed that he was missing a crucial part. He then gave William
Hewlett, co founder of Hewlett Packard, a call to let him know about this missing
part. Mr. Hewlett sent Jobs the missing parts and then offered Steve Jobs a summer
intern job. Jobs met his future partner, Mr. Wozniak, while attending Homestead High

The Little Honey Bees By Shelley Mcneal
Those who hold gardening as a certified profession have been contacted in relation
to the decreasing number of bee colonies. It s good to know about what is going on
and I have built up a brief summary of readings and discussions that I have
discovered on the subject of bee colonies. Shelley McNeal, who carries expertise
within the bee colonies department, quotes The fuzzy little honey bees are the
buggies when talking about these pollinating bugs. They not only enable your
flowers and thus your gardens to flourish but they also play an indispensable part
in agronomics. But the scary thing is, these bee colonies are now becoming an
endangered specie. Nearly a quarter to one half of bee colonies that are in America
have gone within the last twenty or so years. Mites were mainly responsible for the
initial loss of bee colonies however another destroyer is looming on the horizon: The
Colony Collapse Disorder. The reason is still unknown for the set up of this
organization however we have had hints that viral infections or bacteria could be a
possible cause. A number of individuals have come together to study the Colony
Collapse and is made up of businesses from Pennsylvania. They are currently
studying hard; delving into research to look for answers to what could be probable
issues causing this, experimenting with CCD colonies so that they may find a way
to put an end to the cruelty of bee colonies being collapsed, and instead promoted and

The Slice Of A Knife
The Slice of a Knife He didn t look that dead. Apart from the river of blood rushing
out the gaping neck wound, he looked pretty much the same as he did a few
minutes before. His hand was still clasped around his bottle of beer and face was
still frozen in a permanent gaze of boredom. The only thing different about James s
face was the single tear that rolled down his cheek and hung on the cliff of his chin
amongst his stubble. As it fell from his face, his body smashed forward into the
wooden table. And in that moment I felt completely alone. James was the only
reason I was there with the oudious group of so called friends . Only a few
moments before we had been having a wonderful time, drinking wine out of
chipped coffee mugs and reminiscing about the good old days . Then in a beat of a
heart, the lights gave out. Exploded glass cascaded from the ceiling and the sudden
fright caused everyone to panic. There were a few minutes of clattering in the
murky darkness before Bill switched his massive solar powered lamp he (ever so
conveniently) had with him. So typical of Bill, why had he even brought a lamp in
the first place, particularly a solar powered one. He had also carried an excessive
amount of electronic devices that he immediately proceeded to plug in as soon as
he got the chance, perhaps thats why the power gave out. James was murdered in
that dark but did Bill have reason to see James dead? With James out of the way he
would be in total control of their company,
My Motivation For Seeking A Masters Degree
My plan is to pursue a Master s Degree in Computer Science with a focus on
Computer Security part time at Portland State University starting in January of
2016. My motivation for seeking a masters degree is two fold: first, after years of
self study and independent research and learning, the depth and rigor provided by a
graduate level academic program will significantly solidify the skills and
knowledge I have gained. Second, the in depth knowledge that comes from a
graduate level program will prove invaluable in furthering my career. Both my
current position, Mobile Security Engineer at Nike, and any future security related
positions stand to benefit from a graduate program. My current full time employment
in a security related position is what shapes my decision to enroll in this program part
time. The combination of my academic preparation, personal interests and research,
and my current and past employment give me the knowledge and experience to excel
in the program.
My professional qualifications date back more than 10 years, and my personal
interest in computer science goes back even further. At a professional level, I have
worked as a systems administrator, software developer and corporate trainer. Most
recently, I am employed full time at Nike as a Mobile Security Engineer. My
primary responsibilities in this position are to provide security assessments on all
Nike mobile applications prior to their release. This includes black box testing of

The Virgin Of Guadalupe And La Virgen De Guadalupe
In the final resolution concerning religion, Chicanas declare, Revolutionary change
of [the] Catholic Church or for it to get out of the way. On the resolutions listed under
sexuality, Chicanas mention how they recognize their suppression under the Catholic
Church, how religion and culture control their sex lives, and the guilt complexes
pressured onto them when they challenge the institution. Each of these themes are
depicted through the cultural and religious symbol of the Virgin of Guadalupe. La

The Virgin ordered Diego to collect Castilian roses around the hill and she helped
him arrange them into his cloak. On December 12 when Diego returned to the
Archbishop, he opened his tilmГЎtli or cloak in which the image of the Virgin
appeared. In response, the archbishop honored the Virgin s request and built an
altar in her honor. Today, The Basilica de Guadalupe in Tepeyac stands in
dedication to the Virgin s first appearance and remains the most visited Catholic
shrine. Because of the Virgin s Mexican history, she holds great significance to
Mexican Catholics, so it is no surprise why the Virgin remains inherent in Mexican
culture, or as literary scholar Debra J. Blake so aptly defined, Guadalupe equals
Mexico. Both men and women admire the Virgin, but her religious setting provides a
context for oppression through the church. NietoGomez explains how the church
utilized Guadalupe s image, Marianismo, the veneration of the Virgin Mary, became
the model of how to make oppression a religious obligation. This is the heritage of
the Chicana. The church created a patriarchal role for themselves by weaving the
Virgin s image as a pure mother to model ordinary women s behavior. By applying
this method through the guise of subjugation, the Church rationalized their need to
protect women in order to maintain their pure, moral status. Paradoxically, feminine
virtues expressed by the Virgin as to be employed by women represents many
contradictory elements. Debra

Music, Dancing, And Family Honor
Some social and cultural issues that are presented throughout the film include music,
dancing, and family honor. Music was included as a transition between scenes in
order to add dimension to Devdas. In Indian culture, music and dancing are not only
meant to be a form of entertainment, but are also a way to worship gods. This form
of art is commonly accepted by both Hinduismand Buddhism communities because it
is viewed by many to be a gift from the gods. Traditional Indian music is often
accompanied by intricate dancing to show how much Indians value the use of
communication through the use of a medium. Indians are able to have a sense of
unity without the barriers of a caste system or education when they communicate
with body movements. This developed form of communication was seen when
Chandramukhi, a courtesan, was able to dance on equal footing with Paro, someone
of higher class. Through this, Bhansali conveys that when humans are deprived of
wealth and status, they have no distinguishing features besides that of which Brahma
intended for them to have. It is only when individuals give up their materialistic
possessions will they be able to see what is truly important to them. Similarly,
Hinduism stresses that happiness comes from peace, not materialistic possessions. As
seen with Chandramukhi, fulfillments of life should derive from giving up all of one
s materialistic possessions. Although expectations of honor differ between males and
females, the Indian culture
How Did The War Of 1812 Dbq Outline
Intro The war of 1812 was a chaotic, vengeful, selfish and powerful time for
Europeans,Americans,Canadians and Indians,yet,the war of 1812 ended
peacefully, which is ironic due to the horrific events that had happened. Background
One of the many horrific events that took place was Tecumseh s death at the battle of
Thames, North of the United Statesborder.Tecumseh was not the only Indian who
died more than him were killed when America decided to invade old America. The
Americans and The French fought England. Napoleon invaded Europe and America
tried to gain land. Canadadefended it s home from America. England impressed
Americans meaning they made Americans do labor on British ships. Thomas
Jefferson even created The Embargo Act so Foreign places could not use American
resources.

England was furious. Textual Evidence England was upset and offended because
America said, America will be neutral. When they helped Napoleon during England
s war with France. England had the urge to fight. Andrew Lambert once said One
clear goal: Keep the United states out of Canada. So England was not going to let
America invade any of England s territory in England or Canada. The text says, In
1814 American economy collapsed and the British troops British captured
Washington D.C. Capturing Washington D.C was not all that the British did. The
British war at sea turned against America. or so says the text. Basically after the
Americans took a massive tool on the British the British did not surrender,Instead
they got up and fought for there home and were able to
Analytical analysis and comparism of an everyday text
with...
Choose one every day and one literary text. Using at least two analytical techniques
from E301, analyze and compare your two texts in terms of their creativity and
literariness, drawing on material from both parts of the module.
In this paper I will analyze and compare a literary text and an everyday text, in terms
of their creativity and literariness. I chose Philip Larkin s (1964) poem, Self s the
man (see Appendix, Text 1), as the literary text for analysis because it is not only
smooth and pleasing to the eye and mind that it seems effortless to read and contain
within one s self but also because it arouses so many emotions which makes it ideal
for analysis. In Self s the man Larkin (1964), is being cynical towards relationships ...

In my analysis, I will first apply Jakobson s (1960) methodology, stylistics approach
and Carter s (1997) criteria of literariness to the two texts and then contrast them with
illustrations in terms of interpretative schemata. My intention in doing so is to
highlight some of the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches and also modes
in which they interact to better comprehend the nature of creativity and literariness.
On the graphological level, in Text 1, the noticeable attributes are the traditional
lineation, stanza divisions of poetry, and the presence of standard punctuation. The
poem has 8 stanzas in all and each stanza consists of 4 lines. This creates a set
rhythmic pattern, particularly in conjunction with the rhyme scheme. Text 2, on the
other hand, on a graphic level, uses full capitalization in order to emphasize every
letter in the ad and make it look trim and tidy. The headline uses larger, capital and
bold letters to draw readers attention and make them curious about what the
advertisement mainly has to say, leading them to continue on reading unconsciously
by arousing their curiosity and desire to know more about the product and
subsequently persuading them to buy it. Moreover, Text 2, illustrates graphological
deviation, by using solid background colors, and a brilliant diamond ring to focus all
the reader s attention to.
On the phonic level, Text 1 has little

The Theme of Ancestry in Alexie s Poem What the Orphan...
If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all
generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is
present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people (Hanh). The
defining of a person begins first from their ancestry. The importance of family is
vital in every person s life and the reason for this is because families are the group
structure the mostly in every cases tries to be and do the best for each other.
Sherman Alexie and Wendy Rose are both poets that have expressed the
characteristics of their ancestry and culture in their inspirational and touching poems.
Many of them are involved with the critics of personal experiences they have had,

One hand shades her eyes in case the sun should see the glistening teat that
trembles and slides; from the other hand hangs the pouch filled with names (Rose
C). In this part of the poem it is very obvious that Wendy Rose describes how her
memories of her ancestors cause her pain because she feels emptiness since they
are not with her anymore; this supports the idea that the poem is evaluative and
personal. For bringing us the horse we could almost forgive you for bringing us
whisky (Alexie A). This part of the poem is noticeably a metaphor in which the
author describes their conception of useful and useless: they re mostly inclined
towards the wrong stuff, but a good offering will almost overlap the vices, even
though they always come first, just as is usual with some Native American people.
It shows that it is personal and evaluative because they re criticizing their habits and
moral values. Evidently, the importance of ancestors and Indian characteristics such
as tradition, family, language, alcohol (this characteristic is mostly shown only in
Alexie s poem), etc., are shown in both of the poems. On the other hand, Sherman
Alexie tends to describe more about the Indian society in his poems. The poem
What the Orphan Inherits demonstrates the various important aspects of the life of
an Indian. He describes how language, names, alcohol, time, and tradition are
viewed in a general society, or in other words in every part of the world. To

Christian Holy War And Jihad
The first Crusades that took place in the 11th century that attempted to recapture
the Holy Land of Jerusalem, called upon by Pope Urban II could be considered a
Christian Holy similar to Muslim s calling for Jihad. Jihad in Islamic practice is a
Holy War fought by Muslims to guard and/or spread their belief as a civic duty.
Through the effort to take back Jerusalem from the Muslims, the Pope was calling
the Roman Catholics in Europe to militarily conquer the Holy Land and ultimately
resulted in the Christians recapturing Jerusalem in 1099. The parallel seen between
this Christian Holy War and Jihad is that both goals are to spread their respected
religion. In An Account of Pope Urban s Speech at Clermont, Pope Urban II
broadcasts his call for the First Crusadein 1095 in France and in his speech Urban
cites the need for Christian Empire to aid against Muslim empire. By doing this he is
calling for Christian to rage a holy war against the Muslim to take back Jerusalem.
The Chronicle of Solomon bar Simson, demonstrates the persecution that the Jewish
community in the Rhineland in the early parts of 1096, the knights justification of
killing the Jews were to support the focus on the goal of protecting Catholic interests
in the Holy Land and that the Jews were always an enemy to the Christians. The
Siege of Antioch discusses about Northern Syria whom is the largest and most
formidable Muslim country on the way to Jerusalem was faced with hardship with

Theme Of Illusion And Reality In The Rocking Horse
Winner
Self perception plays a key role when an individual seeks to reconcile with the
conflict between their illusion and reality.Illusions that individuals create can help
them achieve something or help them solve a problem. When reality reasserts itself,
it can alter their perception on how to handle the obstacles that are in the way,
making it harder for the individual to deal with it. An individual s self perception
allows to reconcile with both illusions and reality by finding a way to balance
between both of them. The idea of illusionand reality is demonstrated by Paul in The
Rocking Horse Winner, by D.H. Lawrence. In the beginning of the story, Paul seeks
to find his mother s love by gaining luck. Unfortunately, Paul never realizes that his
mother cannot love and that luck cannot gain love. The outcome of trying to achieve
this results in Paul dying. Paul demonstrates the idea that when an individual seeks to
reconcile the conflict between illusion and reality, their self perception makes it hard
to accept reality without devastating the individual.
Throughout the story Paul fails to realize that the belief, luck equals love is just an
opinion and not a fact. Paul s mother, Hester, is the first person that introduces the
concept of luck equalling money to him. Since their family has expensive taste
there is always an unsaid need for There must be more money. (1). Everyone in the
house hears this being said but, no one ever mentions it verbally demonstrating
how the situation starts off. Paul asks his mother Is luck money? (3). His mother
replies It s what causes you to have money. (3). Him asking this question
demonstrates how he wants clarification of how he can achieve his mother s love.
Him believing that luck is money and that money is love shows that he does not
realize that his mom can only love money and not him. Paul sees himself as very
lucky, he also tells his mother about this. The boy saw that she did not believe in; or
rather, that she paid no attention to his assertion. (4). When his mother did not pay
any attention to him it really irritates him and makes him more strong willed to be
able to show his mother how lucky he is. Paul has a great interest in horses.uncle that

Disability Of War
Brave Hearts Do Not Back Down Many soldiers walk away from war with
psychological disorders such as shell shock and post traumatic stress, while others
with mild to critical injuries or life taking situations. Soldiers who have fought in a
war and make it out alive usually come back home and experience psychological
disorders that can cause them to have hallucinations and cause them to react strongly
to anything that reminds them of being in the war. On the other hand, some soldiers
face human casualties that can change their lives forever anywhere from facing a
disability that can put them out of the work force to not making it home alive. War

India s The Indian State
The Indian state, while ostensibly secular, nevertheless has institutionally always
been set up to intervene in religious affairs. The Indian constitution enshrines the
right to individual freedom of religion, [but] also empowers the state to intervene in
Hindu religious institutions. (Sen 16) The constitution, for instance, calls on the state
to ban untouchability, an abhorrent Hindu practice, establishing affirmative action to
help certain disadvantaged religious groups and puts in place separate personal laws
for different religious groups. (Sen 16) These policies allow institutions like the
government, and the courts to intervene in communal issues, making the government
a player in conflicts like the Babri Masjid. The Congress party, while a secular party,
was consequently involved in decision making that would favour either the Hindus or
the minorities. Indias Supreme Court was also involved in legislating on religious
affairs. As Sen writes, India s version of secularism can be traced back to the
debates in the Constituent Assembly, where the constitution was drafted in the late
1940s. The Assembly saw a lot of debate over what form this secularism would take.
There were several voices in the Assembly, including that of B.R. Ambedkar, who
wanted to severely restrict the role of religion in the public sphere. Hence, scientist
K.T. Shah raised the demand that there be an article expressly stating that the Indian
state has no concern with any religion, creed or

to why and how Monet got so sick that fast. The author was trying to show the

Dr. Musoke so far into the book has already put Monet and probably many other
patients before himself where he is so concerned about making them better that he
doesn t even put on the property clothes before going to see them, like he did with
Monet even after hearing that he was bleeding profusely. Just from these two
chapters the reader can come up with many points about the reading. The reader
can say that the author made sure to mentioned that Monet took his women friend
to the mountain and had sex then she died of AIDS, but Monet died close to the
time she disappeared after they had sex so how could he die from AIDS to, it had
to be something else. This can come from where the author says In the afternoon, it
would have rained, as it usually does Mount Elgon, so Monet and his friend would
have stayed in their tents and perhaps they made love while a thunderstorm
hammered the canvas. ( pg 10) here the author indicates that there was sexual
activities. The author then goes on to say Monet s friend dropped out of sight for
several years after the trip to Mount Elgo........ She vanished after that meeting in the
bar lost in the warrens if Mombasa, and by now she has probably died of

Catching Fire Themes
In the book Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins there were many significant themes. I
choose Courage because nearly all the tributes/characters in the book were all
courageous in parts of the book. All the characters are ready to die for one another,
to protect or help the others in the Quarter Quell. I found another example of my
theme in the recent book before Catching Fire called the Hunger Games. There were
many comparisons between the two books because they both revealed the theme of
Courage. In The Hunger Games the tributes had to be really courageous going into
the games, because they knew that there was a good percentage that they would not
make it out healthy and alive. In Catching Fire, you had to be brave enough to give
up your life... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also in the hunger games the tributes that are chosen from each district could be
really young, as in Katness s friend named Rue who was really young that didn t
make it in the hunger games. Some of the tributes were really young, had to be
really brave and courageous to leave there family and go to the capitol and fight
others for saving there life. As in Catching fire, Katness and secretly the love of
her life Gale, have to sneak around to see each other. President Snow whom is the
President of the Capitol does not like the idea of Katness and Gale, and wants the
relationship of Katness and Peeta. President Snow threatens Katness that he will
take care of Gale, if she doesn t. Katness and Gale have to be really brave to see
one another after what President Snow had said. The last example of the theme
Courage is when in the Hunger Games Katness s little sister was chosen as the
tribute originally, but Katness volunteered as Tribute because she didn t want her
little sister to go through that. She had to be so courageous in the moment to
volunteer, because she knew it was not going to be fun, and there was a chance that
she couldn t come back alive. As in
Liraz s Argumentative Analysis
On the flip side, a suggested alternative to this problem is to make education entirely
virtual, or at least a tech dominated school. In this type of education, children would
be taught through a method which they are most familiar the screen and as well it
would prepare them to function in a tech dominated world. While at first it may seem
like the most achievable option, that does not make it the better option. Games cannot

We should be encouraging an atmosphere of managed tech and limited screen time

How Did Harold Wilson Contribute To Modernisation
Harold Wilson, who was the Prime Minister during 1964 70, had promised Britain
one of his most effective campaign speeches. He had promised that Britain would
catch up with the white heat of technological change. Wilson had successfully linked
the Labour Party to modernisation in contrast to what were described as the wasted
years of the Conservative government. The Labour government seemed to be more in
touch with the social and cultural trends of the 1960s.
Modernisation of the British economy was one of the key priorities for the Labour
government. By 1964, it was widely accepted that Britain was lagging behind other
countries such as West Germany and Japan. Britain s economy seemed to be trapped
in the cycle of stop go , with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the economic situation improved markedly from this low point when Roy
Jenkins replaced Callaghan as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Jenkins raised taxes
and tightened up government spending in all areas of the economy, giving top
priority to improving the balance of payments. These tough measures made the
Labour government very unpopular but, by 1969, he had achieved a balance of
payments surplus. These actions had therefore proven that the Labour government
was strong on rhetoric and also by actions.
The infamous numbers of wildcat strikes has led to Wilson and his new
employment minister, Barbara Castle, into planning to use the law to limit these
unofficial strikes. She believed strongly in a powerful trade union movement but
she was also convinced of the need for it to act responsibly. As a result, Castle
produced her white paper in 1969, In Place of Strife. In many ways, Castle s policy
proposals would strengthen the unions in dealing with employers but the trade
unions were not fooled. Castle s In Place of Strike never got beyond the White Paper
stage which proves that the Labour government were only strong on rhetoric but not
on action. This is also evident through the deep divisions it had created within the
Labour Party. The left asked bitterly why the government was contemplating a
measure that undermined the principles for which the Labour Party was
Anti-Federalists Vs Anti Federalist Analysis
When the Constitution of the Untied States was written, there was not a clear cut and
dry answer as to what was to go into the document. Many of the articles and clauses of
the Constitution were debated by the Federalists and Anti Federalists. One topic that
was debated during the drafting of the Constitution and even after the Constitution
was signed was the formation and powers of the Senate. According to the Constitution
of the United Statesthe legislative branch would be bicameral with an upper house
and a lower house. The Senate was created as the upper house and will be made up
of two senators from each state who were chosen by the legislatures of each state. At
the time the Constitution was ratified and the Senate was created, there... Show more

The first issue the Anti Federalists had with the Senate was the term of six years.
Anti Federalists believed that a term of four years would be more appropriate, any
longer and there could be grave consequences. They understood that the Senate
represented an aristocracy and thus they should be more stable and have a longer
term than the House who represents the democracy. They also agreed that making
treaties does require necessary experience, which would only come from time in the
office. However, they feared that those who were in office for too long would feel
independent and instead of pursing legislation for their constituents would have
interests different than his constituents (ThisNation.com, 1788).
Anti Federalists believed a rotation for senators would be a good idea. Because the
House chose senators, it was feared that the senators would use their influence and
the influence of those in the House to continue in office for life. Since it is hard to
remove someone who has been in office for six or more years, Anti Federalists
believe that there should be a term limit of three terms. Anti Federalists also believed
that this would allow for new people to serve and fresh ideas to come into the Senate

The Issue Of Legalizing Gambling
INTRODUCTION
Casinos are all throughout the country, but are they a positive influence for our
society? Our economy? There are people on all sides of this issue; some people
have difficulty determining the reasons behind legalizing gambling in the first place.
In a panel data analysis done by Doug Walker and John Jackson, gambling is legalized
to offer other opportunities for states to increase revenue (Walker and Jackson 1).
This explains why legalizing gambling is important to state governments, saying
states need different revenue options and that gambling would help with an increase
in revenue for the states.
Other people on this issue wonder if casinos can be consistently relied upon for state
revenue. According to Forbes, the casino industry in Las Vegas has been decreasing
because of the recession from 2007 2009. Outside of the United States, the industry
has increased over the past few years (Forbes). This indicates that the casino
business isn t as big as it was before the recession. This has big implications on state
revenues and budgeting. Global Gaming Business Magazine is along those lines,
saying two casinos in Atlantic City are empty; not enough supply of casinos for the
demand (Global Gaming Business Magazine). The recession has made significant
impacts on the industry and the industry can t keep up. And states need to be aware
of these issues so they don t make the same mistakes as Atlantic City. While they
increased economic development, Atlantic City did

impact on economic growth.
Lewis Munford, an analyst, once wrote, quot;Too much energy is as fatal as too little,
hence the regulation of energy input and output not its unlimited expansion, is in fact
one of the main laws of life. quot; This is true when dealing with nuclear power.
Because our societies structure and processes both depend upon energy, man is
searching for the most efficient and cheapest form of energy that can be used on a
long term basis. And because we equate power with growth, the more energy that a
country uses, the greater their expected economic ... Show more content on

Because the energy technology that society employs directly influences the quantity
and quality of life, the energy option that is chosen should have the greatest cost
benefit effectiveness as well as maximizing flexibility and purchases. However, those
who believe in continuous energy consumption growth, seem to forget that there is
only a limited supply of energy in every energy system, and to quot;overdo quot; any
resource may provide for an unacceptable impact upon global and regional ecology.
Thus, if the business world pushes the environment as far as it can go, Ceribus
Paribus, please refer to figure 1. Thus, to use petroleum as a substitute for uranium,
which is needed to power the nuclear system, would not be economically or
environmentally sensible. I say this because, first of all, there is a major supply of
uranium considering it was one of the last energy sources to be found as well as
only a small amount of it is required to produce a lot of energy. Secondly, petroleum
gives off carbon monoxide which is one of the reasons for ozone depletion; whereas,
the uranium does not give off pollution except that it produces plutonium which
needs to be buried for more than fifty years to get rid of its
How Is Violence Presented In A Clockwork Orange
Real Horror show Violence What s it going to be then, eh? (Burgess 3). The question
asked by Alex, the protagonist, that inevitably leads to violence and shenanigans with
his three droogs in A Clockwork Orange. He and his friends are the epitome of
reckless teenagers; they steal, break into homes, and rob innocent civilians on the
street. Throughout the book, the reader will come across many unrecognizable slang
words spoken mainly by adolescents that only one familiar with Nadsat would
understand. Anthony Burgesscreates a new language, Nadsat , to muffle violence and
enhance the futuristic setting in A Clockwork Orange. Taking place in a totalitarian
society where youth violence is at an all time high and adults are oblivious... Show

His intention was for Alex to fit this definition. Throughout the book, there are
many horrific events that make the reader wonder how someone could be so cruel.
When Alex attempts to demonstrate authority over his droogs and show them
what ultra violence really is by relentlessly beating an old woman, causing her
death. His plan to trick the old woman into letting him use her phone backfires
when she refuses, so he finds a way into her house through an open window and
proceeds with his demonstration. Shortly after, sirens are heard and Alex goes to
find his droogs where he is met with a punch to the face and then a substance
sprayed into his eyes, leaving him helpless. Alex is forced to submit to the police s
orders and is charged with murder. This is a turning point in A Clockwork Orange
because Alex finally gets a taste of his own medicine. He has to deal with daily
abuse from the police for two years and it is apparent that Alex is still unable to
change his evil ways until he volunteers to take part in the government s new
behavior experiment to speed up his sentence. Alex s ethical transformation is seen
in the twenty first chapter where he finally grows up and realizes that there s more to
life than violence (Davis and Womack). The violence in this novel is not just
distasteful, but also has a comedic effect. Throughout A Clockwork Orange, Burgess
invokes the conventions of slapstick in order to challenge the
The Story Of Chocolat By Joanne Harris
Chocolate, what a lovely treat. A treat that unfortunately, was frowned on by Le
Comte in the story of Chocolat. The story of Chocolat by Joanne Harris takes place
in the year of 1959 in a small village in Paris. The main character, Vianne, comes
from a culture that has an ancient Mayan recipe for chocolate. Chocolat uses motifs
and allusions of the north wind, lent rebellion and culture to present Vianne with
difficult situations making her seem more Christ like.
Wanting to continue her mother s tradition and culture, Vianne, travels to different
villages opening chocolatieres. Vianne believes when the north wind blows it is a
sign of her mother summoning her to another village. As oppose to some of the
critics on this story, which believe the north wind is a pagan belief of travel, the
north wind idea could be viewed as the Holy Spirit. In the Bible the Holy Spirit is
viewed as a summoning voice directing you in the ways of the Lord. But the
Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you
all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you (John 14:26 NIV).
If we view the north wind as the Holy Spirit immediately a different perspective is
given of the way Vianne handles her decision making. Vianne says in the movie
whatever you say mother as she is looking to the urn where ashes lay, and listening
to the wind beat against her windows, therefore, imposing she believes the wind is
her mother s spirit speaking to her. I

Monumento a la Memoria y la Verdad, San Salvador
Annotated Bibliography
Monument:
Monumento a la Memoria y a la Verdad. 6 Dec. 2003. Black Granite. San Salvador,
El Salvador. Sept. 2004.
This monument was created in order to commemorate the civilians lives lost
during the Salvadoran Civil War. The monument was made to resemble the
Vietnam Memorial; it is made of black granite and has in scripted the names of the
war victims. However, the monument only has in scripted the names of 30,000 of
the 75,000 war victims. The names are organized in alphabetical order. It is 85 feet
long and 15 feet tall. The monument also has the name of the massacres that took
place during the war such as La Masacre del Izote in which an entire town was
burned down and 10,000 civilians were killed. The project begun in 1994 and it was
finished in 2003. The monument was made to pay the government s moral debt to the
population, as stated by the current president of El Salvador. It is meant to be a
symbol of memory and reconciliation. However, the reconciliation aspect of it can be
debatable because it requires the forgiveness for all the lives that were lost during the
war and the horrific circumstances citizens were subject to. The question whether or
not the goal of the monument was met is challenged by forgiving means forgetting
paradox.

Performance Measurement at Lipton:
Evaluation and Recommendations
Nick Arens
Chris Lance
Ryan Moore
Rob Sloan
Summary
We at ALMS Consulting Co. have been hired to analyze the way product lines and
product managers are being evaluated at the Thomas J. Lipton, Incorporated ( Lipton
or the Company ) entity. We will review the performance metrics utilized at the
corporate level of Lipton, explain the current methodology utilized to evaluate the
individual product lines, and then detail the benefits and potential downfalls of the
methodology proposed by Don Logan. Finally, we will provide our own
recommendations and opinions as to how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Historic cost depreciation is being used which leads to skewed numbers that
misrepresent how well a product line will continue to operate in the future due to
understated replacement value of fixed assets.
Also, the cost of working capital is not being included; as a result, Trading Profit is
not indicating the amount of cash and other current assets being tied up in each
particular product line. We think that the opportunity cost of utilizing (tying up)
working capital is not reflected on each individual product lines final results, enabling
product managers to utilize potentially excessive levels of working capital without
poorly affecting their Trading Profit.
Finally, Mr. Logan concluded that there are expenses that are not being allocated at
all or are being allocated improperly:
There is a corporate unallocated Other Income and Deductions ( OI amp;D ) account
that includes charges that pertain to the different product lines.
The allocation of the New Product Development costs is also questionable. Even
though these costs are being utilized to create new products, the established products
are bearing the costs based on their profits.
Manufacturing overhead is based on planned and not actual production.
Don Logan felt that all of these factors played a role in not presenting a true measure
of how each product line and each product manager was doing within Lipton. We tend
to agree that the current process is not accurately reflecting how
Comparing Identity In Ratatouille, And Disney-Pixar s
Identity, what is identity? Is it who we think we are? Or is it who we want to be?
Perhaps it is even how others see us? My Father s Axe by Tim Winton and Disney
Pixar s Ratatouille both make viewers consider the identities of the main characters
and how sometimes, how society sees us or who we want to be can be in conflict
with whom we really are. In Winton s short story, the protagonist tries to be a good
man, good husband and a good father, but all these things he wants to be is
diminishing his true self. While in the movie Ratatouille , Linguini has become a
famous cook through the help of his talented little friend . After he reaches the peak
of the cooking world in France, he slowly realises that his true self is just as
important as how society sees him.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He could swing an axe, my Father , this imagery presents to readers the persona s
high regards towards his father. It is also hinting the persona s amazement seeing
his father s ability and how he wants to become like his father in the future. The
idiom within my mother called me the man of the house, which frightened me a
little highlights how his mother has acknowledged him as the provider of the
family but it is evident that he does not agree to this idea. This further emphasises
how other people see us can define us more than who we really are. I saw my father
ball his handkerchief up and bit on it to muffle his sobs . The identity crisis is not
only affecting the main character but also his father. The example underline the
notion of how our individual identity does not define who we are but how others
see us that actually make up our identity. This theme of being yourself is not always
how society will perceive you is also explored in the movie
Upton Sinclair s Use Of Biblical Allusions In Literature
Allusions distinctly impacts text in numerous ways. Biblical and historical allusions
are often the most recognizable in literature and each have their own significance.
Allusions are very beneficial in the text because they give new meaning to the text
and how it is represented throughout time; allusions in literature can also show new
interpretations of the other works as well. In The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, Sinclair
uses biblical and historical allusions create an embellishment of imagery,
characterization, and the manifestation of government. An emphasis that can be
placed on allusions is in how imagery is portrayed. Bubbly Creek is described as
being constantly in motion, as if huge fish were feeding in it, or great leviathans
disporting themselves in its depths (pg 94). Sinclair used a biblical allusionto
demonstrate imagery using a leviathan, which is an enormous monster first
mentioned in the latter part of the book of Job in The Bible. The leviathan is
enormous and has an indescribable amount of strength and can penetrate a double
layer of armor. The contents of Bubbly Creek have an equivalence of a leviathan,
which shows how much power Bubbly Creek possesses; as well as how nothing
else could ever equate to it in size and its unrestrained moves. Another biblical
allusion that Sinclair uses is the Egyptian plague of flies in the book of Exodus
and with the hot weather descended upon Packingtown a veritable Egyptian
plague of flies; there could be no describing this the houses would be black with
them (pg 104). Sinclair uses this allusion to exemplify how horrid the conditions
were in Packingtown, the plague of flies in The Bible is described as being so
dense in the Pharaoh s palace and the rest of Egypt was covered and ruined by the
flies. The conditions had to have been so horrible and hot, as well as the potential
of rotting meat in Packingtown to bring about so many flies; it was that awful and
disgusting. Historical allusions also leave an impression on literature. Such as the
historical allusion that Sinclair made to the Bessemer Furnace, where they made
billets of steel a domelike building, the size of a big theater (pg 206). The Bessemer
furnace was an invention created 50 years

  • 2. Charles Baxter s The Art Of Subtext A story is only as good as the way it is told. The way a writer uses his or her words to say something is just as important as what they don t say. Charles Baxter, author of plethora of books and university teacher, writes a craft book that goes deeper than the surface of writing and deeper than the words written down. In Charles Baxter s The Art of Subtext, he discusses how authors can use the words they do write just as much to express what they don t write. The first chapter, The Art of Staging claims Staging in fictioninvolves putting characters in specific strategic positions in the scene so that some unvoiced nuance is revealed. (Baxter 13) This includes the character s standing positions, their proximity to each other, specific gestures and facial expressions, which give the reader more insight to the scene and the characters without explicitly saying so. This goes hand in hand with the setting of the atmosphere where atmosphere sets the dominant tone or the mood of a story. The atmosphere can be in reference to the setting or the characters themselves. Here, the reader is to read between the lines. The key to this is using a lot of detail which is crucial to providing the information. This is something important that I need to incorporate in my own writing. More detail in my writing concerning the unspoken things will allow the reader to see the evolution of the narrator s state of mind. A twitch of an eye or how close my antagonist stands to his or her
  • 3. Carbon Monoxide Pathogenesis Carbon monoxide, which is essentially produced through the enzymatic actions of heme oxygenase (HO), appears to have as similar biochemical properties as NO. Activation of guanylyl cyclase produces high levels of c GMP, and this was attributed to the actions of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide acts as a physiological vasodilator in hepatic microcirculation. In contrast, up regulated inducible HO 1 mRNA expression was detected in the right ventricle in animal model of congestive heart failure. Increased carbon monoxide levels are frequently found in cirrhotic patients. Experimental evidence also suggests this substance may be implicated in CCM pathogenesis. This is largely based on the finding of the elevated HO 1 mRNA and protein expression... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A hallmark in the pathogenesis is the pronounced splanchnic arterial vasodilatation and reduced systemic vascular resistance (SVR) (MГёller and, Henriksen, 2008). In this setting, cardiac pressures are largely normal, at least in part, because the reduced after load protects systolic function. This circulatory state resembles certain high output states resulting from increased blood volume and defined as a hyperdynamic unloaded failure of the heart. The distinction is that the hyperdynamic circulation in cirrhosis is due to the low SVR and increased arterial compliance (Timoh et al., 2011). Administration of vasoconstrictors, such as angiotensin II and terlipressin, increases the SVR and thereby the left ventricular afterload unmasking a latent left ventricular dysfunction in cirrhosis. On the other hand, vasodilators, like angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and other afterload reducing agents, should be used cautiously due to the risk of more aggravation of the vasodilatory state (Krag et al., 2010). Diagnosis and

I also speak on the falling housing prices due to the mortgage crisis and the domino effect that will be created on and for the economy. I will also speak on the foreclosure rates caused by sub prime loans and no fall back plan to help in the case of the mortgagor defaults. The Mortgage Crisis Thesis Statement: The mortgage crisis that has caused house prices to fall and foreclosures to occur across the United States will create the need to alter the financial mortgage industry policies; as the impact it has can go as far as causing a consumer recession due to the low unemployment rate, rising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mortgage crisis is simply one side of the coin. The main cause of the mortgage crisis is the changes in policy for the mortgage industry. In the past, a fixed mortgage was the prime form of lending. All mortgages have the same payments for the mortgage duration and a large down payment was essential. The calculation of the mortgage was based on the initial amount borrowed, and house assessment rather than the rising value of the income and the house over the years. In order to encourage people to buy more houses and boost the real estate market, the homebuilders, financial lenders, and the government created new financial instruments of calculation that were not researched properly. Lenders sold mortgages to investors that allowed the risk of default to be covered even though the mortgage was in a financial stretch for the borrower. Borrowers did not read the fine print and made decisions that they could not afford. The major banks Federal and otherwise, kept the interest rates low causing investors to take risks to get high returns in the short term, disregarding the long terms security of the whole process. The result was sub prime borrowers could buy houses they could not afford and prime borrowers could have extra cash flow that in normal circumstances would not have been possible, allowing lenders to make bigger plans in terms of growth etc. The housing epidemic created a false market boom that drove prices up as consumer demands grew.

  • 6. The First Battle Of Bull Run Essay THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN On July 21, 1861, two armies, one confederate and the other Union, prepared for the first major land battle of the Civil War. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President. The Southern states had seceded and the South had fired on and captured Fort Sumter on April 12 1861. After the Fort Sumter battle, both the North and the South began preparing for war by raising armies. This was done quickly and neither side spent much time training the troops. The Southern troops spread in lines along eight miles of Bull Run Creek. The heaviest Southern troops were on a ridge around Henry House. After a few skirmishes, the Union Army arrived at Bull Run on July 21, 1861. As the Union Army approached Bull Run, General Johnston s army faked an attack at Harpers Ferry. As the 18,000 Union troops dug in for assault, the Southern forces jumped on rail cars and headed for Bull Run to reinforce the Confederate Army. General McDonnell attempted to flank the Confederates by moving north and west, and began several attacks on the Confederates right flank and the center of the Confederate line at Henry House. As the battle wore on, the superior numbers of the Union Army began to wear down the Confederate lines. At a critical point, as the Confederates began to fall back, an officer pointed out a line of rebels who were still strong. He said, look at Jackson s men standing like a stone wall . He was talking about General T. J. Jackson s men. Jackson would from then on be known as Stonewall Jackson , one of the most famous of all Confederate generals. This seemed to inspire the Southern troops at Henry
  • 7. Night Father s Relationship The novel Night is written by Elie Wiesel, who is a Holocaust survivor. In this novel he writes about his experience through the concentration camps which involved the death of his family and close friends. One of the most painful thoughts throughout the book was his relationship with his father and how it changed over time. From the beginning it was just Elie and his father. During their journey, his father became more dependent on Elie. It was particularly hard for him to care for his father while watching many other young boys disown their fathers and leave them to die. His father became weaker every day and it was a struggle to sit back and watch, because there really was nothing he could do to have saved him in the end. One of the

She begins her work by describing her morning, comparing it to an avalanche, It had been like dying, She wrote. that sliding down the mountain pass. Everything was lost, He was a platinum print, a dead artist s version of life. I saw on his skull the darkness of night mixed with the colors of day. My mind was going out; my eyes where receding the way galaxies recede to the rim of space. Gary was light years away, gesturing inside a circle of darkness, down the wring end of a telescope. • 9. The Marble Champ Never give up. Always keep going. Try hard. Practice makes perfect. The Marble Champ by Gary Soto is a great story. A girl named Lupe is not good at sports but she finds something athletic that she could be good at. She found marbles. She practiced until she got so good, she won the marbles championship. For this matter, I think a possible theme in this story is to never give, just like Lupe did. A couple reasons why, are because she practices, perseveres, and always gives 100% effort. To begin, one reason why a possible theme could be to never give up is Lupe practices. At the beginning of the story Lupe did fingertip pushups. She did 20 of them in sets of five, so every so often she could take a break. This seems like a lot to ask from someone who isn t that strong. She also squeezed a eraser for a long time. From doing this she got so good she beat Alfonso. Alfonso was a neighborhood kid who was really good at marbles, but Lupe got so good she beat him! In the story it says, Man, she s bad! Alfonso said. She can beat the other girls for sure. I think. This was right after Lupe beat Alfonso, and he was one of the best at marbles. Another reason is Lupe only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secondly, she wasn t good at sports. Instead of just thinking she wouldn t be good at something athletic. She tried. In the story it says, She could not catch a pop up figure in which direction to kick the soccer ball. Instead, she at least put in effort to try and get good at something athletic. Finally, In the marble championship Lupe was going up against a girl that looked tough, but Lupe didn t turn around and walk away. She faced the girl. Lupe shoes a great amount of
  • 10. Autobiographical Statement Essay A few years ago I found myself on a train heading from Amsterdam to Hamburg. I had just spent several days traveling through the Netherlands and was going to end my fall break trip in Germany. The cities I picked had been arbitrary. All I knew was that in the three and a half months I was studying abroad I would see as much of the world as possible. This often meant frantically searching the internet for cheap flights, bus tickets, and hostiles, and only getting to spend a day or two in a magnificent city. This also meant traveling alone. As I relaxed in my seat and scribbled postcards to my friends and parents, I was at the most peace I had ever been. It was not without chaos though. That peace and serenity I felt on a bumpy train ride stayed with me as a constant reminder of the peace possible in the world. Having dealt with such a mind consuming illness I am often envious of those that need not be mindful of every moment and event of every day in order to survive. However, I know that my increased awareness also makes my life that much brighter. It allows me to see and feel other people s pain. It has allowed me to help others through the same difficult times I once faced. My recovery was all about balance and my life continues to be about that same sense of equilibrium. About working hard and playing hard. About spending time alone, running, meditating, dancing, or writing and by engaging in conversation, debating, embracing, dancing (with others), and attending worship. About taking part in extracurricular activities, academics, and volunteering and still giving myself time to have coffee with a friend or read alone in the park. Growing up Catholic and attending parochial school from kindergarten through my senior year of high school meant that religion was constantly around me. However, in contrast to this academic setting, God was absent from my daily life. Although they sent me to a Catholic school and insisted I attend mass every Sunday, my parents never once mentioned God, prayer, or spirituality within the home. These
  • 11. Steve Jobs And Fred Shuttlesworth How These Two Men,That Died on the Same Day, Affected Your Life I took a look back in history, I came across a couple of men that died on the same day. Both of these men have had a great impact on us all. They are responsible for changes that have happened in times of segregation, to a more current time surrounded by IPhones. Steve Jobs and Fred Shuttlesworth are responsible for these changes that have created the world as we know it today. Although, both men were phenomenal at what they did, one will always be better. Fred Shuttlesworth fought for life changing outcomes. He was a blunt, driven, and confrontational man, and maybe the reason you are allowed to be where you are today. Steve Jobs and Fred Shuttlesworth were both hard working individuals, that made their dreams come to life. Although, they may be similar in a lot of ways, their impact on the world was very different. Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California. Steve Jobs showed an early interest in electronics and was mentored by a neighbor, who was an electronic hobbyist. In only the eighth grade, Steve was assembling a frequency counter and noticed that he was missing a crucial part. He then gave William Hewlett, co founder of Hewlett Packard, a call to let him know about this missing part. Mr. Hewlett sent Jobs the missing parts and then offered Steve Jobs a summer intern job. • 12. The Little Honey Bees By Shelley Mcneal Those who hold gardening as a certified profession have been contacted in relation to the decreasing number of bee colonies. It s good to know about what is going on and I have built up a brief summary of readings and discussions that I have discovered on the subject of bee colonies. Shelley McNeal, who carries expertise within the bee colonies department, quotes The fuzzy little honey bees are the buggies when talking about these pollinating bugs. They not only enable your flowers and thus your gardens to flourish but they also play an indispensable part in agronomics. But the scary thing is, these bee colonies are now becoming an endangered specie. Nearly a quarter to one half of bee colonies that are in America have gone within the last twenty or so years. Mites were mainly responsible for the initial loss of bee colonies however another destroyer is looming on the horizon: The Colony Collapse Disorder. The reason is still unknown for the set up of this organization however we have had hints that viral infections or bacteria could be a possible cause. A number of individuals have come together to study the Colony Collapse and is made up of businesses from Pennsylvania. They are currently studying hard; delving into research to look for answers to what could be probable issues causing this, experimenting with CCD colonies so that they may find a way to put an end to the cruelty of bee colonies being collapsed, and instead promoted and enable the next generation of

Apart from the river of blood rushing out the gaping neck wound, he looked pretty much the same as he did a few minutes before. His hand was still clasped around his bottle of beer and face was still frozen in a permanent gaze of boredom. The only thing different about James s face was the single tear that rolled down his cheek and hung on the cliff of his chin amongst his stubble. As it fell from his face, his body smashed forward into the wooden table. And in that moment I felt completely alone. James was the only reason I was there with the oudious group of so called friends . Only a few moments before we had been having a wonderful time, drinking wine out of chipped coffee mugs and reminiscing about the good old days . Then in a beat of a heart, the lights gave out. Exploded glass cascaded from the ceiling and the sudden fright caused everyone to panic. There were a few minutes of clattering in the murky darkness before Bill switched his massive solar powered lamp he (ever so conveniently) had with him. So typical of Bill, why had he even brought a lamp in the first place, particularly a solar powered one. He had also carried an excessive amount of electronic devices that he immediately proceeded to plug in as soon as he got the chance, perhaps thats why the power gave out. James was murdered in that dark but did Bill have reason to see James dead? With James out of the way he would be in total control of their company,

My Motivation For Seeking A Masters Degree My plan is to pursue a Master s Degree in Computer Science with a focus on Computer Security part time at Portland State University starting in January of 2016. My motivation for seeking a masters degree is two fold: first, after years of self study and independent research and learning, the depth and rigor provided by a graduate level academic program will significantly solidify the skills and knowledge I have gained. Second, the in depth knowledge that comes from a graduate level program will prove invaluable in furthering my career. Both my current position, Mobile Security Engineer at Nike, and any future security related positions stand to benefit from a graduate program. My current full time employment in a security related position is what shapes my decision to enroll in this program part time. The combination of my academic preparation, personal interests and research, and my current and past employment give me the knowledge and experience to excel in the program. My professional qualifications date back more than 10 years, and my personal interest in computer science goes back even further. At a professional level, I have worked as a systems administrator, software developer and corporate trainer. Most recently, I am employed full time at Nike as a Mobile Security Engineer. My primary responsibilities in this position are to provide security assessments on all Nike mobile applications prior to their release. This includes black box testing of application

On the resolutions listed under sexuality, Chicanas mention how they recognize their suppression under the Catholic Church, how religion and culture control their sex lives, and the guilt complexes pressured onto them when they challenge the institution. Each of these themes are depicted through the cultural and religious symbol of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Virgin ordered Diego to collect Castilian roses around the hill and she helped him arrange them into his cloak. On December 12 when Diego returned to the Archbishop, he opened his tilmГЎtli or cloak in which the image of the Virgin appeared. In response, the archbishop honored the Virgin s request and built an altar in her honor. Today, The Basilica de Guadalupe in Tepeyac stands in dedication to the Virgin s first appearance and remains the most visited Catholic shrine. Because of the Virgin s Mexican history, she holds great significance to Mexican Catholics, so it is no surprise why the Virgin remains inherent in Mexican culture, or as literary scholar Debra J. Blake so aptly defined, Guadalupe equals Mexico. Both men and women admire the Virgin, but her religious setting provides a context for oppression through the church. NietoGomez explains how the church utilized Guadalupe s image, Marianismo, the veneration of the Virgin Mary, became the model of how to make oppression a religious obligation. This is the heritage of the Chicana. The church created a patriarchal role for themselves by weaving the Virgin s image as a pure mother to model ordinary women s behavior. By applying this method through the guise of subjugation, the Church rationalized their need to protect women in order to maintain their pure, moral status. Paradoxically, feminine virtues expressed by the Virgin as to be employed by women represents many contradictory elements. Debra

  • 22. Music, Dancing, And Family Honor Some social and cultural issues that are presented throughout the film include music, dancing, and family honor. Music was included as a transition between scenes in order to add dimension to Devdas. In Indian culture, music and dancing are not only meant to be a form of entertainment, but are also a way to worship gods. This form of art is commonly accepted by both Hinduismand Buddhism communities because it is viewed by many to be a gift from the gods. Traditional Indian music is often accompanied by intricate dancing to show how much Indians value the use of communication through the use of a medium. Indians are able to have a sense of unity without the barriers of a caste system or education when they communicate with body movements. This developed form of communication was seen when Chandramukhi, a courtesan, was able to dance on equal footing with Paro, someone of higher class. Through this, Bhansali conveys that when humans are deprived of wealth and status, they have no distinguishing features besides that of which Brahma intended for them to have. It is only when individuals give up their materialistic possessions will they be able to see what is truly important to them. Similarly, Hinduism stresses that happiness comes from peace, not materialistic possessions. As seen with Chandramukhi, fulfillments of life should derive from giving up all of one s materialistic possessions. Although expectations of honor differ between males and females, the Indian culture

Using at least two analytical techniques from E301, analyze and compare your two texts in terms of their creativity and literariness, drawing on material from both parts of the module. In this paper I will analyze and compare a literary text and an everyday text, in terms of their creativity and literariness. I chose Philip Larkin s (1964) poem, Self s the man (see Appendix, Text 1), as the literary text for analysis because it is not only smooth and pleasing to the eye and mind that it seems effortless to read and contain within one s self but also because it arouses so many emotions which makes it ideal for analysis. In my analysis, I will first apply Jakobson s (1960) methodology, stylistics approach and Carter s (1997) criteria of literariness to the two texts and then contrast them with illustrations in terms of interpretative schemata. My intention in doing so is to highlight some of the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches and also modes in which they interact to better comprehend the nature of creativity and literariness. On the graphological level, in Text 1, the noticeable attributes are the traditional lineation, stanza divisions of poetry, and the presence of standard punctuation. The poem has 8 stanzas in all and each stanza consists of 4 lines. This creates a set rhythmic pattern, particularly in conjunction with the rhyme scheme. Text 2, on the other hand, on a graphic level, uses full capitalization in order to emphasize every letter in the ad and make it look trim and tidy. The headline uses larger, capital and bold letters to draw readers attention and make them curious about what the advertisement mainly has to say, leading them to continue on reading unconsciously by arousing their curiosity and desire to know more about the product and subsequently persuading them to buy it. Moreover, Text 2, illustrates graphological deviation, by using solid background colors, and a brilliant diamond ring to focus all the reader s attention to. On the phonic level, Text 1 has little

One hand shades her eyes in case the sun should see the glistening teat that trembles and slides; from the other hand hangs the pouch filled with names (Rose C). In this part of the poem it is very obvious that Wendy Rose describes how her memories of her ancestors cause her pain because she feels emptiness since they are not with her anymore; this supports the idea that the poem is evaluative and personal. For bringing us the horse we could almost forgive you for bringing us whisky (Alexie A). This part of the poem is noticeably a metaphor in which the author describes their conception of useful and useless: they re mostly inclined towards the wrong stuff, but a good offering will almost overlap the vices, even though they always come first, just as is usual with some Native American people. It shows that it is personal and evaluative because they re criticizing their habits and moral values. Evidently, the importance of ancestors and Indian characteristics such as tradition, family, language, alcohol (this characteristic is mostly shown only in Alexie s poem), etc., are shown in both of the poems. On the other hand, Sherman Alexie tends to describe more about the Indian society in his poems. The poem What the Orphan Inherits demonstrates the various important aspects of the life of an Indian. He describes how language, names, alcohol, time, and tradition are viewed in a general society, or in other words in every part of the world. To accomplish a

Christian Holy War And Jihad The first Crusades that took place in the 11th century that attempted to recapture the Holy Land of Jerusalem, called upon by Pope Urban II could be considered a Christian Holy similar to Muslim s calling for Jihad. Jihad in Islamic practice is a Holy War fought by Muslims to guard and/or spread their belief as a civic duty. Through the effort to take back Jerusalem from the Muslims, the Pope was calling the Roman Catholics in Europe to militarily conquer the Holy Land and ultimately resulted in the Christians recapturing Jerusalem in 1099. The parallel seen between this Christian Holy War and Jihad is that both goals are to spread their respected religion. In An Account of Pope Urban s Speech at Clermont, Pope Urban II broadcasts his call for the First Crusadein 1095 in France and in his speech Urban cites the need for Christian Empire to aid against Muslim empire. • 30. Theme Of Illusion And Reality In The Rocking Horse Winner Self perception plays a key role when an individual seeks to reconcile with the conflict between their illusion and reality.Illusions that individuals create can help them achieve something or help them solve a problem. When reality reasserts itself, it can alter their perception on how to handle the obstacles that are in the way, making it harder for the individual to deal with it. An individual s self perception allows to reconcile with both illusions and reality by finding a way to balance between both of them. The idea of illusionand reality is demonstrated by Paul in The Rocking Horse Winner, by D.H. Lawrence. In the beginning of the story, Paul seeks to find his mother s love by gaining luck. Unfortunately, Paul never realizes that his mother cannot love and that luck cannot gain love. The outcome of trying to achieve this results in Paul dying. Paul demonstrates the idea that when an individual seeks to reconcile the conflict between illusion and reality, their self perception makes it hard to accept reality without devastating the individual. Throughout the story Paul fails to realize that the belief, luck equals love is just an opinion and not a fact. Paul s mother, Hester, is the first person that introduces the concept of luck equalling money to him. Since their family has expensive taste there is always an unsaid need for There must be more money. (1). Everyone in the house hears this being said but, no one ever mentions it verbally demonstrating how the situation starts off. Paul asks his mother Is luck money? (3). His mother replies It s what causes you to have money. (3). Him asking this question demonstrates how he wants clarification of how he can achieve his mother s love. Him believing that luck is money and that money is love shows that he does not realize that his mom can only love money and not him. Paul sees himself as very lucky, he also tells his mother about this. The boy saw that she did not believe in; or rather, that she paid no attention to his assertion. (4). When his mother did not pay any attention to him it really irritates him and makes him more strong willed to be able to show his mother how lucky he is. The Indian constitution enshrines the right to individual freedom of religion, [but] also empowers the state to intervene in Hindu religious institutions. (Sen 16) The constitution, for instance, calls on the state to ban untouchability, an abhorrent Hindu practice, establishing affirmative action to help certain disadvantaged religious groups and puts in place separate personal laws for different religious groups. (Sen 16) These policies allow institutions like the government, and the courts to intervene in communal issues, making the government a player in conflicts like the Babri Masjid. The Congress party, while a secular party, was consequently involved in decision making that would favour either the Hindus or the minorities. Indias Supreme Court was also involved in legislating on religious affairs. As Sen writes, India s version of secularism can be traced back to the debates in the Constituent Assembly, where the constitution was drafted in the late 1940s. The Assembly saw a lot of debate over what form this secularism would take. There were several voices in the Assembly, including that of B.R. The infamous numbers of wildcat strikes has led to Wilson and his new employment minister, Barbara Castle, into planning to use the law to limit these unofficial strikes. She believed strongly in a powerful trade union movement but she was also convinced of the need for it to act responsibly. As a result, Castle produced her white paper in 1969, In Place of Strife. In many ways, Castle s policy proposals would strengthen the unions in dealing with employers but the trade unions were not fooled. Castle s In Place of Strike never got beyond the White Paper stage which proves that the Labour government were only strong on rhetoric but not on action. This is also evident through the deep divisions it had created within the Labour Party. The left asked bitterly why the government was contemplating a measure that undermined the principles for which the Labour Party was
  • 40. Anti-Federalists Vs Anti Federalist Analysis When the Constitution of the Untied States was written, there was not a clear cut and dry answer as to what was to go into the document. Many of the articles and clauses of the Constitution were debated by the Federalists and Anti Federalists. One topic that was debated during the drafting of the Constitution and even after the Constitution was signed was the formation and powers of the Senate. According to the Constitution of the United Statesthe legislative branch would be bicameral with an upper house and a lower house. The Senate was created as the upper house and will be made up of two senators from each state who were chosen by the legislatures of each state. At the time the Constitution was ratified and the Senate was created, there... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first issue the Anti Federalists had with the Senate was the term of six years. Anti Federalists believed that a term of four years would be more appropriate, any longer and there could be grave consequences. They understood that the Senate represented an aristocracy and thus they should be more stable and have a longer term than the House who represents the democracy. They also agreed that making treaties does require necessary experience, which would only come from time in the office. However, they feared that those who were in office for too long would feel independent and instead of pursing legislation for their constituents would have interests different than his constituents (ThisNation.com, 1788). Anti Federalists believed a rotation for senators would be a good idea. Because the House chose senators, it was feared that the senators would use their influence and the influence of those in the House to continue in office for life. Since it is hard to remove someone who has been in office for six or more years, Anti Federalists believe that there should be a term limit of three terms. Anti Federalists also believed that this would allow for new people to serve and fresh ideas to come into the Senate (ThisNation.com,
  • 41. The Issue Of Legalizing Gambling INTRODUCTION Casinos are all throughout the country, but are they a positive influence for our society? Our economy? There are people on all sides of this issue; some people have difficulty determining the reasons behind legalizing gambling in the first place. In a panel data analysis done by Doug Walker and John Jackson, gambling is legalized to offer other opportunities for states to increase revenue (Walker and Jackson 1). This explains why legalizing gambling is important to state governments, saying states need different revenue options and that gambling would help with an increase in revenue for the states. Other people on this issue wonder if casinos can be consistently relied upon for state revenue. According to Forbes, the casino industry in Las Vegas has been decreasing because of the recession from 2007 2009. Outside of the United States, the industry has increased over the past few years (Forbes). This indicates that the casino business isn t as big as it was before the recession. This has big implications on state revenues and budgeting. Global Gaming Business Magazine is along those lines, saying two casinos in Atlantic City are empty; not enough supply of casinos for the demand (Global Gaming Business Magazine). The recession has made significant impacts on the industry and the industry can t keep up. And states need to be aware of these issues so they don t make the same mistakes as Atlantic City. While they increased economic development, Atlantic City did
  • 42. Nuclar Energy Pros Essay In our society, nuclear energy has become one of the most criticized forms of energy by the environmentalists. Thus, a look at nuclear energy and the environment and its impact on economic growth. Lewis Munford, an analyst, once wrote, quot;Too much energy is as fatal as too little, hence the regulation of energy input and output not its unlimited expansion, is in fact one of the main laws of life. quot; This is true when dealing with nuclear power. Because our societies structure and processes both depend upon energy, man is searching for the most efficient and cheapest form of energy that can be used on a long term basis. Because the energy technology that society employs directly influences the quantity and quality of life, the energy option that is chosen should have the greatest cost benefit effectiveness as well as maximizing flexibility and purchases. However, those who believe in continuous energy consumption growth, seem to forget that there is only a limited supply of energy in every energy system, and to quot;overdo quot; any resource may provide for an unacceptable impact upon global and regional ecology. Thus, if the business world pushes the environment as far as it can go, Ceribus Paribus, please refer to figure 1. Thus, to use petroleum as a substitute for uranium, which is needed to power the nuclear system, would not be economically or environmentally sensible. I say this because, first of all, there is a major supply of uranium considering it was one of the last energy sources to be found as well as only a small amount of it is required to produce a lot of energy. Secondly, petroleum gives off carbon monoxide which is one of the reasons for ozone depletion; whereas, the uranium does not give off pollution except that it produces plutonium which needs to be buried for more than fifty years to get rid of its

The story of Chocolat by Joanne Harris takes place in the year of 1959 in a small village in Paris. The main character, Vianne, comes from a culture that has an ancient Mayan recipe for chocolate. Chocolat uses motifs and allusions of the north wind, lent rebellion and culture to present Vianne with difficult situations making her seem more Christ like. Wanting to continue her mother s tradition and culture, Vianne, travels to different villages opening chocolatieres. Vianne believes when the north wind blows it is a sign of her mother summoning her to another village. As oppose to some of the critics on this story, which believe the north wind is a pagan belief of travel, the north wind idea could be viewed as the Holy Spirit. In the Bible the Holy Spirit is viewed as a summoning voice directing you in the ways of the Lord. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you (John 14:26 NIV). If we view the north wind as the Holy Spirit immediately a different perspective is given of the way Vianne handles her decision making. Vianne says in the movie whatever you say mother as she is looking to the urn where ashes lay, and listening to the wind beat against her windows, therefore, imposing she believes the wind is her mother s spirit speaking to her. Historic cost depreciation is being used which leads to skewed numbers that misrepresent how well a product line will continue to operate in the future due to understated replacement value of fixed assets. Also, the cost of working capital is not being included; as a result, Trading Profit is not indicating the amount of cash and other current assets being tied up in each particular product line. We think that the opportunity cost of utilizing (tying up) working capital is not reflected on each individual product lines final results, enabling product managers to utilize potentially excessive levels of working capital without poorly affecting their Trading Profit. Finally, Mr. Logan concluded that there are expenses that are not being allocated at all or are being allocated improperly: There is a corporate unallocated Other Income and Deductions ( OI amp;D ) account that includes charges that pertain to the different product lines. The allocation of the New Product Development costs is also questionable. Even though these costs are being utilized to create new products, the established products are bearing the costs based on their profits. Manufacturing overhead is based on planned and not actual production. Don Logan felt that all of these factors played a role in not presenting a true measure of how each product line and each product manager was doing within Lipton. • 50. Upton Sinclair s Use Of Biblical Allusions In Literature Allusions distinctly impacts text in numerous ways. Biblical and historical allusions are often the most recognizable in literature and each have their own significance. Allusions are very beneficial in the text because they give new meaning to the text and how it is represented throughout time; allusions in literature can also show new interpretations of the other works as well. In The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, Sinclair uses biblical and historical allusions create an embellishment of imagery, characterization, and the manifestation of government. An emphasis that can be placed on allusions is in how imagery is portrayed. Bubbly Creek is described as being constantly in motion, as if huge fish were feeding in it, or great leviathans disporting themselves in its depths (pg 94). Sinclair used a biblical allusionto demonstrate imagery using a leviathan, which is an enormous monster first mentioned in the latter part of the book of Job in The Bible. The leviathan is enormous and has an indescribable amount of strength and can penetrate a double layer of armor. The contents of Bubbly Creek have an equivalence of a leviathan, which shows how much power Bubbly Creek possesses; as well as how nothing else could ever equate to it in size and its unrestrained moves. Another biblical allusion that Sinclair uses is the Egyptian plague of flies in the book of Exodus and with the hot weather descended upon Packingtown a veritable Egyptian plague of flies; there could be no describing this the houses would be black with them (pg 104). Sinclair uses this allusion to exemplify how horrid the conditions were in Packingtown, the plague of flies in The Bible is described as being so dense in the Pharaoh s palace and the rest of Egypt was covered and ruined by the flies. The conditions had to have been so horrible and hot, as well as the potential of rotting meat in Packingtown to bring about so many flies; it was that awful and disgusting. Historical allusions also leave an impression on literature. Such as the historical allusion that Sinclair made to the Bessemer Furnace, where they made billets of steel a domelike building, the size of a big theater (pg 206). The Bessemer furnace was an invention created 50 years
