The dictionary refers to time as, A nonspatial continuum in which events occur in
apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future.
(Dictionary). Apparently irreversible , this statement is interesting because using
the word apparently still leaves some room for question. Word does that mean?
Does that mean we can change time or the events that have occurred in that time?
Milton doesn t seem to think that is possible. Because Milton further emphasizes
his point when in the first line he personifies time but this time referring to time as
the thief of youth, which reflects somewhat of a bitter tone because time has passed
so quickly. This personification the thief if youth also parallels and agrees with the
dictionary definition of time, the fact that time is irreversible. It appears to the
reader that the speaker is very bitter about time passing so quickly and perhaps he
feels as if his time has been stolen from him.
However, the writer in line twelve also refers to time as a leader, which reflects a
tone of acceptance toward time and his fate. This tone is different from the tone at
the beginning of the poem. The speaker has changed his tone and it seems as if this
tone change has occurred because the speaker is considering how he believes his
short time should be spent.

Howl by Allen Ginsberg can be labeled as a prose poem, but it does not seem to fit
any one category in literature. One could argue that Howl can not be confined by
categorization because of how different in style and form that it is. This version of
the poem was published in 1956 and has three parts. It can be viewed as a stream
of consciousness with many random comma placements and few chances to take a
breath while reading it. The poem is constantly building upon itself giving the
reader little time to pause. The long stretched out lines help add to this effect of,
what Ginsberg called, a big long clanky statement (492). By stretching out the
sentences Ginsberg adds to the overall lengthy feeling that the poem has. The
beginning of the poem has a dedication to Carl Solomon, a friend Ginsberg met in
the Columbia Psychiatric Institute. He drew inspiration from Solomon s work in
Howl and thought highly of him as an intellectual person. The first line of the
poem reads, I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving
hysterical naked, and the speaker continues on from there (492). Right away
readers are thrown into the speaker s view and what he has seen in his life. The
first misplaced comma is one of many, but symbolizes the chaos that he is describing

books in this series. Martin has expressed feelings and similar situations to the

My assessment took place on two separate occasions in the community setting. The
first patient R.J. is a 76 year old male diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes type II,
and hyperlipidemia. The SPICES assessment reviled that R.J. needed further
assessment of his sleeping patterns and arthralgia. The second patient M.T. is an 80
year old male diagnosed with diabetes type II and dyslipidemia. M.T. needed a
further assessment of his sleeping patterns and he also uses a cane to ambulate
when he leaves the house. R.J. indicated that he has issues sleeping through the
night; to assess his quality of sleep and his sleep pattern I used the Pittsburgh Sleep
Quality Index (PSQI). This tool measured R.J. s sleep habits over the past month.
His total global PSQI score was 5 indicating that he is a poor sleeper. During the
assessment R.J. stated that it takes him fifteen to twenty minutes to fall asleep and
on some days he wakes up about twice to urinate. R.J. also mentioned that he takes
