This document discusses the art and science of learning and development (L&D) design. It states that L&D design is both an art and a science. The artistic side involves creatively designing learning journeys that engage learners through innovative activities and methods. The scientific side requires defining goals, scopes, and outcomes and discovering learner needs through research to ensure solutions are effective. An ideal L&D design blends both approaches to create learning experiences that are practical, relevant, measurable, and facilitate immediate knowledge transfer.

Embed and extract learning in work, 70:20:10 is the buzz word. It is linked to performance and performance support.
What is the embedded learning design? what is the dream and destination?
For sure, it is a new learning paradigm.
Best practices are scarce!
CasCas presents a visualisation of the 702010 destination. Subsequently I present a journey, an implementation strategy. Based on the image of the future, I describe the tasks and contribution of Learning & Development professionals.

Despite Learning measurement frameworks like Kirkpatrick and Philips ROI that have been around for so many years, defining meaningful measures still continues to be a big challenge for L&D. ‘E’ has become the most ignored in ADDIE.
We talk to an experienced panel about the unsatisfactory current state and what needs to be done to improve the importance, visibility and value of measuring Learning effectiveness in the real world. We focus on how to collect actionable insights about learning effectiveness: not only seeking to answer, did learning achieve the desired or intended result, but also why/why not.
Trish Uhl, a Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP) will explore the trends and business drivers of how and why the field of Instructional Systems Design is using concepts like "gamification" to move from task-based services to strategically aligned performance-based solutions!
Together we will explore and answer the following questions:
• What is a simple, common definition of gamification?
• Why should I care about gamification?
• What does gamification have to do with instructional design and training delivery?
• How does gamification align to the ASTD Competency Model?
• How does this fit in with where learning and performance is trending?
• How can I get started?
"Trish’s presentation on Gamification/ where the industry needs to go / the ASTD Competency Model was fabulous!
I could see immediately how relevant, engaging, and appropriate to the topic her presentation was.
Learning by applying and doing right there at the event is perfect for our audience." - Susan N. (San Jose, CA)

Grabbing the attention of time starved LearnersLaura Overton
44% of L&D professionals say their staff are reluctant to engage with online learning but Towards Maturity’s direct research with learners shows that perhaps they are not as reluctant as we think! This interactive session, first presented at the Learning Technology Summer Forum 17th June 2014, takes a fresh look at how L&D professionals can think about not only grabbing learner’s attention but turn that attention into action. Here we show how to apply killer tips from the world of marketing to today’s L&D challenges.
The presentation also introduces the Towards Maturity Engagement Index to help L&D organisations identify how their engagement strategies compare with others. Readers can identify their Engagement Index, and 21 other effective practice indices by participating in the Towards Maturity Benchmark Study at www.towardsmaturity.org/benchmarktoday.

Our 2016 Spring research topic was dedicated to the challenges and opportunities of building a successful and strategic learning culture. Our leaders shared their definition of a true learning culture, who is the owner of an organization’s learning culture, as well as what barriers stand in the way of a strong learning culture. Lastly, and most importantly, we learned what business outcomes they have seen positively impacted by having a strong learning culture.

The future of learning and development (L&D) is already here. This new reality includes workers and their managers sharing more of the responsibility than you might be used to. That doesn’t mean your L&D organization, practices, and tools are obsolete—they still play an important role. But they do need to evolve. These days, the most successful chief learning officers do more than just supply learning. They also enable their workers to take learning into their own hands.

Is Design Thinking important? We think it is - it’s one of our 8 building blocks for digital transformation. But what it is it, and why? In the run up to the Global Legal Hackathon, we thought we’d distil our workshop slides and ideas with an associated blog post to explain it.
Let’s set the scene with five quotes from experts and artists you will recognise explaining what design really is:
"The ultimate defense against complexity” - David Gelernter, Professor of Computer Science, Yale
"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” - Leonardo da Vinci
"Design is a way of changing life and influencing the future” - Sir Ernest Hall. Pianist, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist
“Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer - that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs
“Design-thinking firms stand apart in their willingness to engage in the task of continuously redesigning their business… to create advances in both innovation and efficiency - the combination that produces the most powerful competitive edge.” - Roger Martin, author of the Design of Business

How often have we heard "demonstrate me the value of L&D"? or "the L&D budget will be cut this year" or seen little or inappropriate staffing levels in L&D?
Based on lessons learnt from experiences in large, mid-sized and start-up private organisations, the objective of this workshop is to take you through a pragmatic journey to shape a strong business case for your L&D.
By the end of the session you will have acquired hands-on processes and tools to help you:
- Assess the critical knowledge issues of your organisation and how to address them
- Get buy-in from stakeholders to support and sponsor your L&D strategy
- Measure and demonstrate the ROI of your learning initiatives
