Editor's Notes

  1. Good Evening President Regan, Vice President Philanser, Board members, Dr. Danielian community and colleagues. Tonight I will be giving you an update on the LCAP for 2017-2020.
  2. The state of California’s Constitution guarantees that all students have the right to a free and appropriate public education. In order to ensure that students have the education they need the state provides money for Maintenance, Construction, and utilities of school buildings. Teachers and staff are also hired to provide core services to students. Students are also provided with Basic School Supplies such as crayons, pens, pencils, glue, paper, scissors, and rulers, There are also programs and services to meet the needs of specific groups of students who may struggle in school.
  3. The new LCAP template promotes the idea that the LCAP is the story of the district. Norwalk-La Mirada’s story focuses on the of the needs of our students, highlights our biggest successes and examines the areas in our organization that need to be refined. The actions and services established during the 2015-2016 school year were reviewed to see how the services and programs helped students grow and improve.
  4. Central to our belief system in Norwalk-La Mirada is that collaboration is essential to success. The LCAP process provides our district with the opportunity to collaborate with teachers, classified staff, principals, parents, directors and students. As we work together to identify the priorities of our community and evaluate the educational program for our students we build our collaborative relationships. Together we work to examine data in order to refine our work.
  5. The Board has supported our LCAP process by setting aspirational goals to guide the work of the district and the LCAP. The goals set by the board are aligned to the state priorities. The state priorities are required for all districts and are outlined within our LCAP plan. These priorities include having quality teachers, using the Common Core state standards, and providing access to rigorous courses. We must also monitor student success and achievement data and ensure that our students, parents, and community feel welcome and included in our schools.
  6. As Shannon Baker and Bob Rayburn shared with the Board several months ago, we now have a new tool for evaluating our achievement as a district. This tool is called the CA Data Dashboard. The Data Dashboard provides a snapshot of our district’s achievement data. With this tool we can now identify the both the status or achievement level of our district and how we are changing and improving. On this slide you can see that each line shows “increased” except for suspention rate which shows that our suspention rate has declined. All this data must be analyzed and reported in the LCAP.
  7. The LCAP follows the direction set by the superintendent to focus on on high quality teaching and learning, research based best practices, and preparing our students for college and career so they can be successful adults. Let’s look a little closer at these areas and how our LCAP describes the core work of our district.
  8. In our LCAP we describe how we will meet the needs of all our students and provide increased and improved services to foster youth, English Learners and students with low incomes, collectively known as Unduplicated pupils. Our research based best practices were developed in collaboration with principals, teachers and other staff to meet the needs of our students. Research shows that when teachers collaborate to design instruction they increase their effectiveness and student achievement improves. Our district has framed our PLC work around math, personalized learning, and support for students in their social and emotional wellbeing.
  9. The result of our efforts to implement research based best practices is that our teaching and learning is high quality. Hard working teachers and administrators use data to guide their work to design instruction that is engaging and effective. When students struggle, teachers and principals seek to find interventions and supports to help facilitate improved outcomes for students. These interventions and supports are outlined in our LCAP.
  10. Finally, it is the goal of the district that all students be prepared for adult life. Our LCAP demonstrates that we are committed to providing supports for career technolcal education, early college, access to college tools and support for students taking rigorous course work.
  11. To help facilitate our outreach to the community, an info-graphic outlining the key goals, actions and budget items of our LCAP has been developed. This “LCAP LITE” will be distributed to all school sites, posted on our website, and in both Spanish and English languages.
  12. All together the LCAP combines goals and objectives, facilitates stakeholder engagement and data analysis to guide our actions and services which are provided by our professional staff of over 1,600 employees to more than18,000 students in order to ensure that all our students have the opportunity to demonstrate excellence.
