On 24 July 2009, I was fortunate enough to speak at the BA World conference in Wellington, to talk about Centres of Excellence for business analysis, how aiming for excellence would help us overcome some of our challenges, on what those first steps would look like. This was the first public airing of the early stages of what would evolve to become my practice development approach.
A lot of our focus, especially during times of crisis is focused on business continuity. Succession planning, the right people to rill the right roles, goes hand in hand with this.

This framework was created during a challenging ICT implementation project. I needed a way to get reluctant people excited and ready for their new working ways and processes, so I tested and tried different things. The one that worked was a combination of strategy, continuous change readiness measurements, picking the correct change management theory, communicating differently (and in different schedules) for different target audiences, using HR to pick the correct people to the core team and using the project management method, which suited the organization. This was an extreme experiment, but it worked. I've since tested it or parts of it in action in other change programs as well.

A Y to X tree is a tool to help you drill into the details of an objective to determine what the Xs might be at a granular level.In this example, we will use one of our HR LRP priorities, “Apply Lean / Six Sigma principles to achieve greater process excellence.” By itself, that encompasses a lot of things, and would be nearly impossible to attempt. By drilling down a little, we can identify actionable tasks and deliverables.You can see here that we start with the goal itself at the top. We then drill that down into the key components or measures that make up the goal. In this example, we have selected three keys to success, LSS metrics, LSS Champion Certification and LSS Deployment Sessions. We then take each of these and drill them down further. In this case, we have gone to the next level on LSS deployment sessions. You can follow the path by looking at the boxes in green. We have identified LSS Return on investment, Belt certifications, number of projects completed and a tracking mechanism as either key indicators or required components of a successful program.
