Definition
• The word "laundry" may refer to the clothing
itself, or to the place where the cleaning
happens.
• Laundry refers to the washing of clothing and
other textiles, and more broadly, their drying
and ironing as well.
Principles of Laundering
• Removal of dirt and stains from the linen
articles
• Restoring linen articles to their original
appearance as far as possible
Laundry Process
• The laundry process has been changing day to
day by the invention of new equipments, new
fabrics and new laundry supplies, which have
changed the traditional practices of
laundering.
• Proper equipment and proper work
organization can make laundry work a
pleasure.
Equipment used in washing clothes
1. Laundry Equipment
2. Drying Equipment
3. Ironing Equipment
1. Laundry Equipments - equipments
which are used for removal of dirt from
clothes during washing process.
Cloth Basket or bag:
Baskets made of bamboo stick or
plastic bags of jute fibers are used
for storing dirty clothes. Whereas
plastic baskets can be more
desirable due to their light weight
and durability.
Sink
It is very advisable to have
a sink, as it very
substantially reduces the
amount of work, and
labour involved in
washing clothes.
Draining boards should be
attached on to either side
of the sink.
BOILER
• Most of the household cloths such as
table and bedspreads, white cotton
garments, need boiling in soap solutions
in order to disinfect them and to reserve
their whiteness.
• The material used for boiler should be
hard and should not rust easily.
• Copper is most suitable.
• The size will depend on the amount of
washing or number of articles to be
washed.
• It is not advisable to have a big size as it
will consume lot of heat.
• A pair of tongs and a wooden boiler-
stick is necessary for moving the clothes
in the boiler and for removing them.
These are the most essential articles for
laundry work as they are used for various
purposes, e.g., steeping, washing, rinshing,
blueing, starching and dyeing.
The most suitable material for tubs and
buckets is galvanized iron as it does not
readily rust and is easy to clean.
Plastic is also quite good.
TUBS AND BUCKETS
:
ENAMEL BOWLS AND BASINS
• Enamel bowls and basins are
utilized for several purposes in
laundry.
• These are used to make
solutions of starch, blues or
dyes and also for keeping
different reagents for use
during stain removal.
• These are made from tin and
are heavily coated with baked
enamel or porcelain enamel to
make them unreactive with
different chemicals.
Laundry Reagents and Containers
• Different types of laundry reagents like
washing soda, blues, optical bleaches and
other chemicals used in stain removing are
kept in containers.
• These may be small ampules or wide mouthed
bottles, but should be tightly closed and
properly labelled.
SCRUBBING BRUSHES
• Formed from plastic and are available with
hard as well as soft bristles.
• Hard bristles are used for rough and thick
fabrics and the soft ones for delicate ones.
SCRUBBING BOARDS AND BEATERS
• It has either a corrugated
surface or a board made of
parallel wooden strips fixed
on a rectangular
wooden/zinc/steel of
aluminium rust resistant
frame.
• These are used for scrubbing
of dirty clothes during
washing.
Hand Mug and Soap Case
Hand mugs made of tin or plastic are useful for
handling and shifting of water during washing
Suction washer
• The delicate fabrics which do not
stand rubbing and beating can be
washed with the help of a suction
washer.
• The appliance consists of hollow ‘cup’
of copper or chromium attached to a
long ‘wooden handle’.
• The flat base of cup has many small
perforations.
• During washing, the cup end of
washer is moved up and down over
the clothes dipped in soapy water
turned regularly.
• During this action, the air and dirt is
drawn in the cup, because of the low
pressure developed in it and hence
dirt is freed from the clothes.
Washing Machines
Classified as:
i) Fully Automatic: which, with one setting of the
controls, fills itself with water at a set
temperature, washes, rinses, extracts water and
stops, all without further attention on the part
of the operator.
ii) Semi automatic: the operator has to intervene a
number of times. After the washing phase, the
wash water has to be let out by the user. The
rinse water has to be filled and drained out each
time.
iii) Manually operated: 50 percent of the work is
manual.
2. Drying Equipments
• The washed clothes can be dried conveniently
under direct sunrays when sufficient open
space is available.
• The lack of open area in urban areas and the
rainy reason has stressed the need for other
appliances for drying of clothes.
a) Outdoor Drying
• Cloth Line or Cord and Clips:
– Simple rope or cord made of galvanized iron,
plastic hemp or coconut fibers etc.
– it is tied at the two ends. The clothes are spread
on the cord and held in position by clips.
– The air as it moves across the clothes, draws away
the cloth moisture till they are dried.
– To avoid rust staining of clothes, clips of plastic or
aluminium are widely used, but these must have
strong holding capacity.
b) Indoor Drying Aids
• Wooden rack with rope and pulley arrangement
– The wooden rack has many horizontal wooden bars
on which the wet clothes are spread.
– Thereafter, it is pulled to the roof level with the help
of a rope passing over a pulley fixed to roof.
• Folding Drying Rack:
– It is a three legged iron stand with a central vertical
rod projecting upward.
– To a disc attached at the top end of the vertical rod
are attached foldable horizontal rods.
– The clothes are spread on these horizontal rods and
the rack positioned at a cross ventilating place till
they are dried.
3.Ironing Equipments
• These are used to remove wrinkles and to give
a better finish to the washed clothing

LAUNDRY EQUIPMENTS.ppt

  • 1. LAUNDRY EQUIPMENTS Mrs.R.Subha, M.Sc., M.Phil., D.C.T., Assistant Professor of Home Science
  • 2. Definition • The word "laundry" may refer to the clothing itself, or to the place where the cleaning happens. • Laundry refers to the washing of clothing and other textiles, and more broadly, their drying and ironing as well.
  • 3. Principles of Laundering • Removal of dirt and stains from the linen articles • Restoring linen articles to their original appearance as far as possible
  • 4. Laundry Process • The laundry process has been changing day to day by the invention of new equipments, new fabrics and new laundry supplies, which have changed the traditional practices of laundering. • Proper equipment and proper work organization can make laundry work a pleasure.
  • 5. Equipment used in washing clothes 1. Laundry Equipment 2. Drying Equipment 3. Ironing Equipment
  • 6. 1. Laundry Equipments - equipments which are used for removal of dirt from clothes during washing process. Cloth Basket or bag: Baskets made of bamboo stick or plastic bags of jute fibers are used for storing dirty clothes. Whereas plastic baskets can be more desirable due to their light weight and durability.
  • 7. Sink It is very advisable to have a sink, as it very substantially reduces the amount of work, and labour involved in washing clothes. Draining boards should be attached on to either side of the sink.
  • 8. BOILER • Most of the household cloths such as table and bedspreads, white cotton garments, need boiling in soap solutions in order to disinfect them and to reserve their whiteness. • The material used for boiler should be hard and should not rust easily. • Copper is most suitable. • The size will depend on the amount of washing or number of articles to be washed. • It is not advisable to have a big size as it will consume lot of heat. • A pair of tongs and a wooden boiler- stick is necessary for moving the clothes in the boiler and for removing them.
  • 9. These are the most essential articles for laundry work as they are used for various purposes, e.g., steeping, washing, rinshing, blueing, starching and dyeing. The most suitable material for tubs and buckets is galvanized iron as it does not readily rust and is easy to clean. Plastic is also quite good. TUBS AND BUCKETS
  • 10. : ENAMEL BOWLS AND BASINS • Enamel bowls and basins are utilized for several purposes in laundry. • These are used to make solutions of starch, blues or dyes and also for keeping different reagents for use during stain removal. • These are made from tin and are heavily coated with baked enamel or porcelain enamel to make them unreactive with different chemicals.
  • 11. Laundry Reagents and Containers • Different types of laundry reagents like washing soda, blues, optical bleaches and other chemicals used in stain removing are kept in containers. • These may be small ampules or wide mouthed bottles, but should be tightly closed and properly labelled.
  • 12. SCRUBBING BRUSHES • Formed from plastic and are available with hard as well as soft bristles. • Hard bristles are used for rough and thick fabrics and the soft ones for delicate ones.
  • 13. SCRUBBING BOARDS AND BEATERS • It has either a corrugated surface or a board made of parallel wooden strips fixed on a rectangular wooden/zinc/steel of aluminium rust resistant frame. • These are used for scrubbing of dirty clothes during washing.
  • 14. Hand Mug and Soap Case Hand mugs made of tin or plastic are useful for handling and shifting of water during washing
  • 15. Suction washer • The delicate fabrics which do not stand rubbing and beating can be washed with the help of a suction washer. • The appliance consists of hollow ‘cup’ of copper or chromium attached to a long ‘wooden handle’. • The flat base of cup has many small perforations. • During washing, the cup end of washer is moved up and down over the clothes dipped in soapy water turned regularly. • During this action, the air and dirt is drawn in the cup, because of the low pressure developed in it and hence dirt is freed from the clothes.
  • 16. Washing Machines Classified as: i) Fully Automatic: which, with one setting of the controls, fills itself with water at a set temperature, washes, rinses, extracts water and stops, all without further attention on the part of the operator. ii) Semi automatic: the operator has to intervene a number of times. After the washing phase, the wash water has to be let out by the user. The rinse water has to be filled and drained out each time. iii) Manually operated: 50 percent of the work is manual.
  • 17. 2. Drying Equipments • The washed clothes can be dried conveniently under direct sunrays when sufficient open space is available. • The lack of open area in urban areas and the rainy reason has stressed the need for other appliances for drying of clothes.
  • 18. a) Outdoor Drying • Cloth Line or Cord and Clips: – Simple rope or cord made of galvanized iron, plastic hemp or coconut fibers etc. – it is tied at the two ends. The clothes are spread on the cord and held in position by clips. – The air as it moves across the clothes, draws away the cloth moisture till they are dried. – To avoid rust staining of clothes, clips of plastic or aluminium are widely used, but these must have strong holding capacity.
  • 19. b) Indoor Drying Aids • Wooden rack with rope and pulley arrangement – The wooden rack has many horizontal wooden bars on which the wet clothes are spread. – Thereafter, it is pulled to the roof level with the help of a rope passing over a pulley fixed to roof. • Folding Drying Rack: – It is a three legged iron stand with a central vertical rod projecting upward. – To a disc attached at the top end of the vertical rod are attached foldable horizontal rods. – The clothes are spread on these horizontal rods and the rack positioned at a cross ventilating place till they are dried.
  • 20. 3.Ironing Equipments • These are used to remove wrinkles and to give a better finish to the washed clothing
