Technology Integration Rationale
Fractions are a vital part of our everyday lives.
Whether you are baking, prepping for a party,
determining how much pie you can eat without
feeling guilty, or dividing up the check for dinner,
fractions always seem to pop up where you least
expect them.
But sometimes, is it really hard to figure out
how to halve a recipe? Or maybe you
struggle to tip correctly because 1/5 of the
bill sounds a bit pricey and who knows how
to do that?

Technology gives students a visual representation and can illustrate
hands on fraction knowledge such as measuring ingredients to make
a cake. Having that visualization will help when they put their pencils
to the paper to figure out problems. Before you know it they’ll be
asking if they can calculate the tip for you. Watching videos about
where fractions can be applied will open up their eyes to the fact
that everything is a fraction, not just the homework in their math
classes.

subtract, multiply, and
divide fractions
because it relates to
them and their
interests.

• The class notebook can be used for the teacher to get
feedback from the students as well as a place where she
can upload notes, assignments, etc.
• The notebooks are private between teacher and student,
but the teacher can use screenshots to post exemplary
work or address questions students have with answers
created by either another student or teacher.

  • 1. Fractions Intended for math in grades 5 & 6 By Alyssa LaQuay
  • 2. Technology Integration Rationale Fractions are a vital part of our everyday lives. Whether you are baking, prepping for a party, determining how much pie you can eat without feeling guilty, or dividing up the check for dinner, fractions always seem to pop up where you least expect them. But sometimes, is it really hard to figure out how to halve a recipe? Or maybe you struggle to tip correctly because 1/5 of the bill sounds a bit pricey and who knows how to do that?
  • 3. Rationale Continued Technology gives students a visual representation and can illustrate hands on fraction knowledge such as measuring ingredients to make a cake. Having that visualization will help when they put their pencils to the paper to figure out problems. Before you know it they’ll be asking if they can calculate the tip for you. Watching videos about where fractions can be applied will open up their eyes to the fact that everything is a fraction, not just the homework in their math classes. It becomes important to know how we add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions because it relates to them and their interests.

Internet Resources • Khan Academy – Non-profit organization created by an educator that gives students free access to information through short videos. • TeacherTube – An organization that hosts educational videos for teachers and children on a variety of subjects. • Ted-Ed – An organization owned by TED which teaches topics in a variety of subjects.

Internet Uses • IXL Learning – This website makes it easy to choose any subject and have multiple examples to do out yourself. – If you get a question wrong it walks you through the steps to get the right answer next time. • Any Data Site! – Any data website can become a fraction search. – These fractions can easily be turned into word problems based on real life events.
  • 16. Internet 2.0 • The class notebook can be used for the teacher to get feedback from the students as well as a place where she can upload notes, assignments, etc. • The notebooks are private between teacher and student, but the teacher can use screenshots to post exemplary work or address questions students have with answers created by either another student or teacher. Khan Academy: Can be used in the classroom by looking up any topic to have an easy to follow tutorial in the classroom. www.khanacademy.org Teacher Tube: Teacher tube gives teacher geared videos that help with generating lessons or putting a visual twist on one you already have. They also give students kid-friendly videos that helps support them outside and inside the classroom. www.teachertube.com Ted-Ed: Videos which you can use to customize lessons. The website says you can use, tweak, or completely redo any lesson they have on their site. ted.ed.com
  9. How would this diagram be used in an actual lesson? After talking about the fact that fractions are indeed numbers and can be used on a number line we could do this work sheet. They will be able to split up the fractions and order them least to greatest even seeing which ones were equivalent by seeing which look similar on the chart. They can then easily order them from the ones who have very little space taken up to the ones who have a lot. Before coloring in the squares, the teacher can give them an ok if they have divided the square up correctly according to their numbered counterpart. How does this enhance student understanding? It will show students visually that some fractions (although they look different) are actually equivalent. So they have what it looks like in fractions, what it looks like in visual parts, and they can use those to order it from which did I color on the least and which did I color on the most. To make it easier, you could ask the children to color in the number indicated where the teacher had already divided up the boxes.

This would be helpful because you can ask the students then and there to explain their thinking while they are answering questions on the smart board. If they are unable to answer the question, a “phone a friend” tactic can be utilized where they ask a friend to help them explain it. With this you can see right where the student is struggling.
  11. Game URL and image from: http://www.math-play.com/simplifying-fractions-game/simplifying-fractions-game.html In this game it gives you enough time to write out your problems and figure out the correct answer so you can “play soccer” by kicking the ball into the goal. It is also aligned with the standards. This would be helpful because it gives students enough time to write it out on paper but it is also a game, so they have motivation to get the questions right.

It also gives help by guiding you step by step through the problem so next time you can get the right answer.

  14. Interactive Website: https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6 This makes learning your fractions a game by racing against the clock to rack up points to 100. If teachers buy the full version, their students can have unlimited access to information and questions. Data Website: http://www.infoplease.com/spot/valcensus1.html Any data website makes it easy for students to find fractions and create their own word problems based on real life events. This makes students more inclined to participate because it has something to do with them. Increases motivation.

A math journal is something I intended on doing for my own class before realizing I could use this online. It would be an easy way for a student who has problems with their homework or what they’ve learned to ask questions which may be answered by other students in the handout section. The teacher has a way to make students proud of the work they handed in by showcasing it as well as keeping other things students find embarrassing, like not understanding a problem, between them and the teacher. The teacher can also post questions for the kids to work through together in the classroom or separately.
