Typical Elementary students, Today: • Live in homes with multiple big screen, HD TV’s with 100’s of channels, surround sound, remote control, cartoons on demand, etc. • Have toys kids could not have imagined 50 years ago • Are ADDICTED to SUPRA-NORMAL-STIMULI role playing video games • Have classrooms that may likely be one of their LEAST ENGAGING environments! WHY is this happening? The math hasn’t changed. Typical Elementary students, 50 years ago: • Lived in homes with one black and white tube TV with rabbit ears, 3 channels, and no remote control • Only had sticks, rocks ,and dirt as toys to play with • Had classrooms, however, that were many students’ MOST ENGAGING environment! Lower Relative Engagement Levels in modern classrooms are eroding S.T.E.M. foundations due to declines in Automaticity.
