3. INTRODUCTION
The Cathedral Church of the Resurrection aka Lahore
Cathedral is anAnglican cathedral in the heart of Lahore,
Pakistan. It was built onThe Mall in 1887, opposite the
Lahore High Court. It was consecrated on 25 January 1887.
It was originally built out of pink sandstone by
architect John Oldrid Scott (son of George Gilbert Scott).
It is a spectacular, monumental structure having
distinctive features of Gothic architecture
5. HISTORY
The city of Lahore was conquered by
the British in mid nineteenth century
which was when the city spread
outside the Mughal’s Walled City of
Lahore.
Considering the potential of the city,
the British introduced new building
typology and architecture in the city
in terms of educational institutions,
railroads, shopping malls, museums,
courts, churches, and cathedrals.

It is located on the Mall road opposite the Lahore High Court and
also adjacent to Mcleod Fane Road
7. Plan of the Building
■ This Cathedral is a typical Latin cross plan, as depicted in Figure
incorporating Gothic revival features having dominant elements of height.
9. Changes Brought To The
Building Structure:
The foundation of the
Cathedral was laid in 1874, and
the structure was completed in
January 1887.
However, the two towers with
tall spires were added in 1898,
(The spires were demolished
after the earthquake of 1911 for
safety reasons.
As a result of the earthquake
the roof of the cathedral was
damaged and so were the walls
and interior of the church,
which was re-constructed.

• This magnificent structure is an example of neo-Gothic architecture, which resembles cathedrals
found in Europe, specifically the Norte Dame and Charte Cathedrals in France.

33. DENTILS
A dentil is one of a series of closely spaced,
rectangular blocks that form a molding.
Dentil molding usually projects below the cornice,
along the roof line of a building.
The use of dentils is strongly associated with
Classical (Greek and Roman) and Neoclassical (Greek
Revival) architecture.
It is especially noticeable in the pediment of a portico
of a Neoclassical building.

39. Tracery is an architectural
device by which windows (or
screens, panels, and vaults)
are divided into sections of
various proportions by stone
bars or ribs of moulding.
There are two main types:
plate tracery and the later bar
tracery.
It mainly originated in gothic
architecture and is also seen
in Romanesque architecture
as well.

Finial, in architecture, the decorative upper termination of
a pinnacle, gable end, buttress, canopy, or spire. In the
Romanesque and Gothic styles, it usually consists of a
vertical, pointed central element surrounded by four out
curving leaves or scrolls.
