This document evaluates explanations for obedience by examining Milgram's agentic state theory and the legitimate authority explanation. It finds issues with the agentic state theory, such as it removing individual blame and not accounting for gradual changes in behavior. The legitimate authority explanation is supported by real-world examples but seen as too simplistic. Other possible explanations discussed include gradual commitment, dehumanization, and authoritarian personality traits influencing obedience.
