Fortunately, there are a number of well-established open source solutions to help you address software update needs. But, with so many options, how do you determine which solution is right for your device?
This webinar will provide the foundation you need to make an informed decision. We’ll examine several different industry approaches, including A/B updates with a dual-redundant scheme, delta updates, container-based updates and combined strategies, as well as the leading technologies that support these approaches. Open source technologies such as Mender, RAUC and libostree-based solutions implement these strategies and provide tools to manage updates of multiple devices.
We’ll also review a variety of open source Linux software update technologies, and offer practical examples for integrating them using the Yocto Project and OpenEmbedded. In order to help you better understand the strengths and weaknesses of each technology, we’ll deep dive into various real-world use cases, including leveraging CAAM (Cryptographic Accelerator and Assurance Module) hardware on Freescale i.MX6 hardware for encrypted and signed updates and using Microsoft Azure IoT to host software updates from the cloud.

IPv6 Segment Routing is a major IPv6 extension that provides a modern version of source routing that is currently being developed within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). We propose the first open-source implementation of IPv6 Segment Routing in the Linux kernel. We first describe it in details and explain how it can be used on both endhosts and routers. We then evaluate and compare its performance with plain IPv6 packet forwarding in a lab environment. Our measurements indicate that the performance penalty of inserting IPv6 Segment Routing Headers or encapsulat- ing packets is limited to less than 15%. On the other hand, the optional HMAC security feature of IPv6 Segment Routing is costly in a pure software implementation. Since our implementation has been included in the official Linux 4.10 kernel, we expect that it will be extended by other researchers for new use cases.

Abstract:
Network management and monitoring is at the heart of nearly all network operations, and yet the methodologies and technology used in this critical area are lagging far behind. SDN brought abstractions and programmability to the control plane, but the management plane has not seen similar advances.
At the last OpenDaylight mini-summit we motivated a new high-level approach for SDN-based configuration management. In this talk we describe the mission and progress of a new industry collaboration to build the basis of programmable management for heterogeneous and complex networks. The OpenConfig working group is structured as a low-overhead open source project with contributions from multiple global-scale network operators. The initial focus of the group is to develop a set of vendor-neutral data models for configuration and state management based on real-world operational use cases.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
