The document discusses the traditional craft of Kolhapuri chappals from Maharashtra, India. It describes the origin of Kolhapuri chappals in the 13th century and how they are still made through traditional methods by over 20,000 craftspeople. The key steps of the craft include tanning animal hides, cutting and stitching leather to form the sole and upper, and attaching straps. Efforts are being made to revive the craft through improved designs, standard sizing, and technological and social support from organizations. Organizations can be viewed as systems in which management creates the architecture for the system of production. Managers' role in organizational design is central but must be understood in the context of their overall responsibilities within the organization. Management operates through functions such as planning, organizing, staffing, leading/directing, controlling/monitoring, and reporting. These functions enable management to create strategies and compile resources to lead operations and monitor outputs. The concept of management has acquired special significance in the present competitive and complex market oriented world. Efficient and purposeful management is absolutely essential for the survival of any organization. Management concept is comprehensive and covers all aspects of business. In simple words, management means utilizing available resources in the best possible manner and also for achieving well defined objectives. It is a distinct and dynamic process involving use of different resources for achieving well defined objectives. The resources are: men, money, materials, machines, methods and markets. These are the six basic inputs in management process (six M's of management) and the output is in the form of achievement of objectives. It is the end result of inputs and is available through efficient management process. In the book entitled “Fifty Management Techniques” author Michael Ward had suggested different management techniques for managing strategy, operating, decision, marketing, pricing, finance, people and learning for successful accomplishment of goals and objective of the organization and this seminar is based on the same book. These techniques are not only useful for any profit oriented private organization but also beneficial for public sector organization like public extension system.
Kantha is a centuries-old tradition of stitching patchwork cloth from rags, which evolved from the thrift of rural
women in the Bengali region of the sub-continent - today the eastern Indian states of West Bengal and Orissa, and
Bangladesh. One of the oldest forms of embroidery originating from India, its origins can be traced back to the preVedic age (prior to 1500 BCE). This needle- craft is the quilting of old fabrics such as sari, dhoti etc. Used as a blanket
by rural people to protect them against cold. The document discusses how kantha has been dominated by women
and has ultimately helped to empower hundreds of them. Through primary research conducted among 24 artisans
from West Bengal’s Barasat, Guma, Ashoknagar, the various factors that made it women-centric were explored. A
qualitative and ethnographic cluster study was conducted in which direct interviews were taken and questionnaire
was prepared accordingly.

16. Design problems faced by Kholapuri chappal makers
2/26/2015 Neha Kestwal; M.Des; Semester - 2 16
• The artisans did not have a standard pattern of sizing. They used fingers and hand
for sizing. This results in inconsistent sizing of footwear. Customer cannot look for size 7 or 9 in a Kolhapuri -
he has to try the chappal on.
• The stiff base of the chappal was achieved by stitching together layers of leather. A piece of canvas was
placed in between to increase the stiffness of the sole. But the stiff base turns soggy in water.
• The layers of leather stitched to form sole were temporarily attached using a unique ‘mud’ taken from
nearby river.
• The two ends of ‘angutha’ are stitched one above the other and pushed between the layers of leather
resulting in discomfort.
17. Craft revival
• Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) – Technological Support.
• Asian Centre for Entrepreneurial Initiatives (ASCENT) – Social Support Ascent – a Bangalore-based non-
government organization with a difference. Ascent is an establishment launched by executives and
business people with an interesting method of working, in the downtrodden of this nation.
• National Leather Development Programme (NLDP) – Sponsors When Athani traditional craft of making
Kolhapuri and Bandh toe sandals slowly started sinking in this fast-paced world, NLDP, along with other
groups of common interest launched on a project aimed at a revamp of the trade; without taking away the
skill and craftsmanship of decades standing. This is the NLDP – Athani Project.
• Leather Technology Mission (LTM) – Sponsors Athani artisans and their craft; may have a respectable
position in the Indian leather sector, by way of quality technology and design.

19. "Aaj pure desh ko Kolhapuri ki chappal ki
zaroorat hai, taaki pura desh tez gati se chale,
(the nation needs Kolhapuri chappals, so that
it can move ahead fast)," the Prime Minister
said as the crowd roared in approval.
2/26/2015 Neha Kestwal; M.Des; Semester - 2 19
Kolhapur chappals are flat, intricately patterned, handcrafted leather footwear. Dyed in natural tan, deep maroon, mustard yellow and dark brown colours they are decorated with leather braids and golden zari cords.
