2. It all started in year 1760, agrarian society of European countries drastically shifted
towards industrialization. This effected textile industry too. Textile which was a household
activity till than started shifting towards mass production.

The first sewing machine was patented in year 1790, by Thomas saint. He was a London
cabinet maker. Saint work was never manufactured or published. So we can say that he
ideated for sewing machine that were later modified by other innovators.

4. Newton Wilson’s model of Thomas Saint’s sewing machine design
In 1874, William Newton Wilson built
a machine from drawings of Thomas
Saint. The model of the machine that
Wilson built from Saint’s drawings is
now in display in the London Science
Museum.

5. French inventor Barthélemy Thimonnier invented a sewing machine in 1829 and
signed a contract in 1830 with Auguste Ferrand, a mining engineer. Auguste prepared the
requisite drawings and filed a patent application supported by the French government.
The patent was issued on 17th July 1830 to both of them. In the same year,
Barthélemy, with some of his friends, opened the first machine-based apparel
manufacturing company in the world to create army uniforms. A mob of tailors, believing
that the machines would put them out of work, broke into Barthélemy’s shop and threw
the machines out of the windows and burned down the shop.

6. In the 1850s, an American inventor, actor and
entrepreneur, Isaac Merritt Singer,
developed the first sewing machine that could
operate faster and with accuracy to
surpass the productivity of a tailor sewing by
hand.

The machine was made of wood and
used a barbed needle, which works
in the principle of today’s lock-stitch
machines. The needle passes
downwards through the cloth, grabs
the thread and pulls it upwards to
form a loop to be locked by the next
loop.
He revolutionized the sewing world
and established the Sewing Machine
Company named ‘Singer’.

7. 20th Century
There was substantial growth in the use of sewn products, and sewing machines became more affordable to
the working class. Information on the latest fashion trends became available in periodicals during the late

8. Ready-made garments (RMGs) paved their way during this period as women (with
sewing skill) in larger numbers joined the paid workforce, leaving them with less time. to sew.
The first RMGs were military uniforms for men, mass-produced during the War of 1812.
