DESIGN DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP FOR SISAL CRAFT
introduction
INTRODUCTION
IDPMS (Initiatives for Development through Participation of Marginalized Sections) is a non-profit voluntary
organization, into Rural Development with its head office at Bangalore, Karnataka. IDPMS as
society jointly established by The Govt. of The Netherlands and the Govt. of Karnataka, IDPMS
started functioning in 1988. Development projects situated in the relatively backward regions of
the State of Karnataka were completed during the subsequent years. In working through these
projects IDPMS has gained considerable knowledge and experience which has helped in its
transformation as a resource organization for sustainable livelihoods, human rights specially
concerning women empowerment, women and children, governance, information systems,
indigenous knowledge, environment and conservation. IDPMS is committed to the economic
development of the rural poor people through various activities. IDPMS has networked with
similar organizations in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra States.
IDPMS is registered as a Society under The Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960, Regn. No:
801/87-88. In pursuance of its main objective of the development of the rural poor, it has executed
development programmes in several rural areas of Karnataka. IDPMS is also registered under the
Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, which enables it to receive contributions from foreign donors.
IDPMS has been instrumental in forming self-help groups of women for the past 15 years. This
programme was implemented in five districts of Karnataka viz., Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Bellary,
Bidar, Haveri and Gadag.
IDPMS has formed a total of 335 women self-help groups (SHGs) in Karnataka covering more
than 5300 women members. Presently, around 200 artisans in sisal craft in and around Kuderumole
village, Chamarajnagar district. IDPMS providing skill development training, organizing design
development workshops to the sisal craft artisans.
IDPMS - Its Misson
IDPMS considers as its mission, the creation of values fostering economic and social justice and
the empowerment of the constituency of the rural poor, particularly women, towards meaningful
ends such as the production of goods or services through just and equitable means.
Kuderumole
Kuderumole is a small village of 7000 population. This place is in Chamarajnagar District of
Karnataka.
How to reach Kuderu:
Kollegal (About 110 kms from Bangalore) is nearest town and it is about 40 kms from Kuderu
village. Kollegal is well connected by buses and take a local bus from Kollegal to Kuderu.

handicrafts, sponsored by DC(H).
• Training programmes on - Personality development, PRA , small and microenterprises
development , etc.

• Income generation activities through handicrafts, silk reeling, embroidery, Photography,
beauty parlours, food vending, electrical / electronic servicing, cable TV etc., have been
attempted.
During the last 15 years of its existence IDPMS has taken up various programmes in the area of
handicrafts. Baseline survey was conducted in 2 villages including Kuderu, about 169 families
were surveyed. As an outcome of baseline survey, IDPMS had submitted the proposal for design
development workshop for jute craft to office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts),
Mysore. The proposal has been sanctioned with the financial assistance of Rs. 1,80,000 as per the
sanction order letter no. No.C-17011/41/2002-CC(SR)/17815 dated 22.10.2003. The workshop
was successfully conducted by Mrs. Neelam Chhiber, NID Designer, Managing Trustee representing
Indus Tree Crafts Foundation, Bangalore, with designer Mr. Shyam Aravindakshan, Designer, Indian
Institute of Crafts & Design, Jaipur & Ms. Ami Patel, Designer, Indian Institute of Crafts & Design,
Jaipur working with ICF. The 15 days workshop was successfully conducted at Kuderu from
1-12-2003 to 15-12-2003.

About IndusTree Crafts Foundation, Bangalore
IndusTree Crafts Foundation is a trust working in the area of craft design and development for
international and domestic markets. Market led products are designed by a team of young and
dedicated designers trained at leading design schools. Training and development of artisans is one
of the focus areas of the trust. Materials such as natural fibre, textile, leather, paper, wood, metal
and stone are worked with. IndusTree Crafts Foundation is backed by IndusTree Crafts Pvt. Ltd. –
an organisation with expertise in marketing – in the domestic market through ‘The Design Store’
and internationally through leading buying houses.
ICF’s current mission is to offer its services to develop market led rural livelihoods & micro
enterprises. It chiefly works with craft and artisanal projects through NGOs and rural co-operatives.
Inauguration of the Design Development Workshop:
This workshop was inaugurated on 1-12-2003 by Mr. Rajendra Prasad, Asst.Director, KVIC,
Chamarajanagar. This function was also attended by:

Agriculture is the main source of livelihood in and around
Kuderu.Sisalisalargegenusofshortstemmed,woodyplants
bearing a rosette of long, erect, pointed, fleshy leaves. About
275speciesaredistributedintropicalregions.ThePortuguese
introduced agave in India in the 15th century. They are now
completelynaturalizedthroughoutthecountry.Sisalisgrown
widely in India. It is a small greenish grey hedge plant. The
leaves have a thorn at the tip and grows up to a height of 2 - 3
ft. These leaves yield valuable fibre. Strongest and hardest
fibre and is preferred for high traffic area both in residential
andcommercialapplication.Readilyacceptsdyesandiseasy
tomaintain.
Sisal is found in abundance in this area. It is not the main
plantation. The leaves were locally used to make ropes for tieing wood and grass bundles.
Propagation
The propagation happens by removing and re-rooting the suckers.
Sisal products have a very large market potential in the export market, as also they will have in the
domestic market. Sisal is a very strong, lustrous natural fibre and can take the wear and tear equivalent
of coir. The huge advantage of sisal has over coir is that it is a white material which take the dye
very well and is softer than coir. Apart from floor coverings, products made from braided sisal like
bins, bags etc are also in demand.

The leaves of Agave yield a strong fibre, which is used for making ropes, cordage and twines. The
shorter fibre and bristles are used for making mops and suited for cordage. It is also being used to
manufacture coarse fabrics. It is commonly used for binders, twines, fishing nets, doormats, rugs,
carpets, etc. The waste of the fibre is used for making paper and paperboards.
Current Sisal raw material price at Kuderu is about Rs. 15-20 per kg.
Skills & Techniques of Sisal craft artisans at Kuderu
Main skills in this cluster are rope making and braiding.
Rope making
Rope making is one of the most basic skill for converting any linear mate-
rial into a usable stage. It is practiced in most of the craft pockets. Ropes
can be made by two methods vis, hand spinning and machine spinning.
Materials like sisal, jute, banana bark and various natural fibres are soaked
in water and that material are taken and rolled between the palms. The
material is twisted in only one direction thus obtaining a ‘S-twist’ or a ‘Z-
twist’. Machine spinning is a technique adopted by the locals for faster
production. It involves a very simple mechanism, consisting of cycle wheel
with hooks fixed on them and a handle to rotate the wheel. Then sisal fibre
is fixed on the metal wheel hook, then one person rotates the wheel and
four or less persons make the rope by joining sisal fibre. Number of people
required for making rope on machine depends on the number of hooks on it, generally two to three
people are required on one hook.
Braiding
Braiding is another important skill used in this craft pocket. Braiding is
extensively used here for making products. Commonly the plait braids are
used.

• Presently all these sisal artisans are producing only ropes & braids, which is not
converted to any product.
• Appropriate markets for ropes produced are not tapped.
• Limited skills in this cluster, more skills should be taught.

31 artisans from different SHGs, were selected for the design development workshop. Participated
artisans were shown their interest in learning new products & new skills. Most of the crafts people
were experienced in making ropes & braids with sisal fibre. The designers who conducted the
workshop were from Bangalore, namely, Mrs. Neelam Chhiber, NID Designer & Managing Trustee,
IndusTree Crafts Foundation, Mr. Shyam Aravindakshan, Designer, Indian Institute of Crafts &
Design, Jaipur, Rajasthan & Ms. Ami Patel, Designer IICD, Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Introduction of new skills to make different products using available sisal raw material and exploring
with different products was the focus of the workshop. Finish of the final products was the most
important aspect in the workshop. Products which have good potential in urban market were
introduced.
Activities of the workshop:
• The skills used in the workshop were: Braiding, rope making, removable
frame, stitching.
• Removable frames were introduced for different type of bags, bins & pouches.
• New skill of construction on frames were taught.
• Dyeing inputs for were given which included a standard dyeing procedure.
• Finishing techniques for bags were introduced.
• Colour combination and finishing of the products were the most important aspects of
this workshop.

Dyeing procedure for sisal
Dyeing was an essential part of the workshop & the production also. Hence special importance
was given to this input. Sisal material takes colours easily. The fibre was dyed and then spun or
braided to make any product. Dyeing procedure was taught at the workshop by the designers of
ICF.
For 1 Kg. of sisal raw material
Ingredients:
Basic Dyes, Acetic Acid
Tools and equipment:
Wide mouth dyeing vessel of 50 lts. capacity
Gas stove/ Firewood
Small steel tumblers
Steel spoons
Procedure:
• Boil 50 lts. water in a wide container
• Take dyes in required quantity in a small steel container and add luke warm water to it. Mix
well, the solution is called Dye Stuff.
• Pour it in boiled water and mix well, this is called Dye Bath.
• Add material to dye bath, boil for 25-30mins.
• Take out the material and add 3-4 table spoons of acetic acid to the dye bath.
• Put the material back in the dye bath and boil for another 15-20 mins.
• Take out the raw material.
• Then wash the material with cold running water.
• Dry the material in shade.

fast production.
• The product range developed in the workshop are according to current market trend
and demands, thus ensure a wider market.

• Small tool kit should be provided to the artisans of the sisal craft.
• Presently all these craftsmen do not have skills to produce the end product, so such
people have to be trained with workshops like this and the artisans should have the capacity
to take the production orders and produce with quality and with the buyer specifications
• Buyers like IndusTree Crafts, state emporiums etc. should be contacted for any orders
and also should have exposure to other markets.
• In future, develop products according to the market trend & the demand.
• Continual design intervention, at least once in a year to cope with the changing market
demands is needed. This will help the craftsmen to develop & update their skills and
ideas according to market trend.

Based on the baseline survey conducted by IDPMS, the Office of Development Commissioner
(Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India sanctioned Rs.1,80,000/- to IDPMS for
conducting Design Development Workshop at Kuderu, Chamarajnagar Dist. for the benefit of the
sisal craft artisans of Kuderu. As per the sanction order, letter No.C-17011/41/2002-CC(SR)/
17815 dated 22.10.2003, the workshop was inaugurated on 1st December and conducted up to
15th December 2003.
On receipt of the sanction, with the advice and guidance of Mr. Devaramani, Assistant Director
(H), HM&SEC, Office of DC (Handicrafts), Mysore and Mr. Dattatreya, Sr. Asst. Director (H),
RDTDC, Office of DC (Handicrafts), Bangalore the programme was planned. The workshop was
successfully conducted for 15 days from 1st December 2003 to 15th December 2003. As per the
advice of Mr. Dattatreya, Deputy Director (H), RDTDC, Bangalore, IDPMS decided to use the
services of Mrs. Neelam Chhiber, NID Designer, representing Indus Tree Crafts Foundation, with
designer Mr. Shyam Aravindakshan, Designer, IICD, Jaipur & Ms. Ami Patel, Designer, IICD, Jaipur
working with ICF as designers for the workshop. The workshop was successfully conducted for 15
days at Kuderu.
Prototypes were developed in the workshop. New products developed were catalogued, this will
help IDPMS & artisans of Kuderu to find buyers that in turn will give more benefits to the artisans.
Valedictory function was organised on 15th December, an exhibition of the products developed in
the Design Development Workshop was organised at Kuderu. Certificates were given to all the
participants by Mrs.Puttasiddamma, President, Gram Panchayati, Chamarajanagar & Mr. Sadananda,
Director, IDPMS.
