Kiva is a nonprofit organization that allows individuals to lend money via microfinance institutions (MFIs) to help entrepreneurs and students in over 80 countries. Kiva works with over 104 MFIs across 49 countries, facilitating a loan every 31 seconds. Individual lenders choose who they want to fund, that money is sent to an MFI partner who lends it locally, and as borrowers repay their loans the money flows back to the lenders and allows more lending. While microfinance has benefits like empowering the poor and women, it also has challenges such as high interest rates and not all borrowers wanting business loans.
