Latin American Airline Industry
Latin American airline industry TAM Airlines is the largest airline in Latin America in terms of
number of annual passengers flown.[16]Along the first countries to have regular airlines in Latin
America were Colombia with Avianca, Chile with LAN Chile (today LAN Airlines), Dominican
Republic with Air Dominicana, Mexico with Mexicana de Aviación, Brazil with Varig, and TACA as a
brand of several airlines of Central American countries (Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica,
Guatemala and Nicaragua). All the previous airlines started regular operations before World War II.
The air travel market has evolved rapidly over recent years in Latin America. Some industry

Most agreements permit airlines to fly from their home country to designated airports in the other
country: some also extend the freedom to provide continuing service to a third country, or to another
destination in the other country while carrying passengers from overseas.
In the 1990s, open skies agreements became more common. These agreements take many of these
regulatory powers from state governments and open up international routes to further competition.
Open skies agreements have met some criticism, particularly within the European Union, whose
airlines would be at a comparative disadvantage with the United States because of cabotage
restrictions.
[edit] Economic considerations Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan American World Airways, surveying
his globe. The collapse of Pan Am, an airline often credited for shaping the international airline
industry, in December 1991 highlighted the financial complexities faced by major airline
companies.Historically, air travel has survived largely through state support, whether in the form of
equity or subsidies. The airline industry as a whole has made a cumulative loss during its 120 year
history, once the costs include subsidies for aircraft development and airport construction.[18][19]

The Piano Play Analysis
The piano music becomes rapidly more passionate, and then breaks off suddenly in mid phrase
(Stoppard, 85). Immediately before this quote, Stoppard writes that there are now four hands present
on the piano, rather than the usual two hands. The music became more intense over time, because the
plot in the play is currently uprising to a main event. Thomasina mentions how her mother, Lady
Croom, is in love with Count Zelinsky, who happens to be the man playing the piano. After
Thomasina confesses this unknown statement, there are suddenly four hands on the piano, hinting at
the readers that both Count and Lady Croom are now playing the piano. Love can be a powerful thing
and the piano enhances this message by suddenly becoming more intense. Within the play, the
background noise is critical when understanding the meaning of Arcadia. The main source of noise in
this play is the piano. The piano plays a crucial role in both the past and present tense of the play. In
the past, the piano is used when talked about waltzing because music and dancing go hand and hand
together. Also, the piano resembled carnal embrace or otherwise known as sex in the past tense. On
the other side, in the present tense the piano serves as a distraction. When the tempo of the piano is
drastically changed, the characters seem to notice it more and comment more frequently on it than
before. Whether it is in the past or present, noise changes the audience s mood throughout the play and
pushes them towards

The Impact of the Egyptian and the Hebrew Civilizations on...
Introduction Throughout history, great civilizations have existed in various parts of the world. The
cultural, economic, political, and/or intellectual achievements of these civilizations contributed to the
advancement of humankind. Civilization is a term that has various meanings. Most popularly and in
this context it can be referred to as an advanced state of human society, in HYPERLINK
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/which which a high level of HYPERLINK
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/culture culture, science, industry, and government has been

society living together in a particular period of history. We have had some Civilizations that have had
an enduring impact on humanity and have, therefore, been called great . To best understand the great
impact that various civilizations have had on our history, this essay will choose two civilizations,
provide a succinct description of them, and provide two examples of their cultural, economic,
political, and/or intellectual achievements as well as explaining the lasting importance of each of these
achievements to global history Ancient Egypt It is even possible, that Egypt, through the solidarity, the
unity, and the disciplined variety of its artistic products, through the enormous duration and the
sustained power of its effort, offers the spectacle of the greatest civilization that has yet appeared on

Mitral Valve Disease Essay
Mitral Valve disease is the most common heart disease in dogs, it is responsible for 75% of heart
disease in dogs. It is thought to be genetic and is more common in smaller breeds, especially in
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels where it is the leading cause of death, it can also effect larger breeds.
Mitral valve disease effects the cardiovascular system. In a healthy animal deoxygenated blood flows
into the heart from the vena cava into the right atrium, it then passes through the tricuspid valve into
the right ventricle. From here the blood travels through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where is it
oxygenated, next it flows from the lungs to the left atrium via the pulmonary vein. Here it passes
through the mitral valve to the left ventricle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is no cure for mitral valve disease, it can only be managed and treatment can change as the
disease progresses. The treatment is commonly diuretics, positive inotropes, vasodilators and other
medications that help relieve the symptoms of heart failure and regulate blood pressure. Sometimes
treatment does not work in severe cases and the dog will die even with treatment. The only way to
prevent the disease is to stop the dog from breeding either by neutering the animal or keeping it away

Essay about John Steinbeck Common Themes
Born in 1902 in Salinas, California, Nobel Prize winner, John Steinbeck, was one of the most
important writers in America during the 20th century. In his novels, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men,
Cannery Row, and In Dubious Battle, Steinbeck explores what it takes for a person to find true
happiness in life. Steinbeck addresses the pursuit for happiness in one s life the American Dream , by
questioning modern idea of it being achieved through material items and the path people take to
accomplish it. Steinbeck also addresses the happiness people find in relationships and how connecting
to someone can affect a person s decisions in life. To communicate his ideas with the reader, Steinbeck
creates the storyline of his novels, connecting his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Charles provides a perfect example of the importance a relationship has, and how not having one can
bring out the darkest part of one s personality. Whereas he used East of Eden to focus on the American
Dream of one s desire to make a better life for his or her children, Steinbeck uses Of mice and Men to
focus on the unachievable aspect of the American Dream. In the novella, George and Lennie convey
this theme through their reassurance that they will not have to tend to someone else s ranch and will
soon have there own: O.K. Someday we re gonna get the jack together and we re gonna have a little
house and a couple of acres an a cow and some pigs and An live off the fatta the lan , (Of Mice and
Men, p. 13). Throughout the novella George repeats this line more often and it even acts as one of the
few things Lennie remembers. It appears the more times they reassure themselves of this dream, the
more it shifts from reality to fantasy. This dream also catches the imagination of other characters in the
novel, one being Crooks. Crooks, who naturally does not believe in the luxury of dreaming, becomes
transformed by Lennie s thinking: ...If you...guys would want a hand to work for nothing just his keep,
why I d come an lend a hand (Of Mice and Men, p. 73). This quotation suggests every American
succumbs to the idea of the American dream. This quotation also

Stand By Me (movie Review For Small Group Com) Essay
A Summer To Remember
The movie Stand By Me is based upon a novel by Steven King. It doesn t have the same eerie feel as
some of his other books and is generally a more serious movie. It takes place in the small town of
Castle Rock, Oregon. It is the middle of the summer in approximately the early 1960 s. The kids are
bored and that is the setup for their adventure to go find a dead body in the woods.
The main role of Gordie LaChance is played by Wil Wheaton. He is having trouble in his life at this
time because he just lost his brother and his parents are having a very difficult time dealing with it.

Vern whines that it means they are all doomed and should go back. Vern also slows the group when he
refuses to go into the woods away from the tracks towards the trail. He then plays the role of backseat
driver (class notes) when they reach the swamp saying, I told you we should have kept following the
train tracks . Vern hindered the development of the group. While they could have been devoting time
to the task at hand, they had to spend time helping him with trivial things like dealing with him being
scared when they are in the woods. While Vern slowed the group by challenging many of the group s
ideas, Teddy presented a much different challenge to the group.
Teddy is described in the beginning as being reckless and wild. He holds to that description right in
the beginning with two crazy incidents. When they leave in the beginning and are walking on the train
tracks, Teddy goes a little bit nuts and says he is going to dodge the train. It takes the entire group to
pull him away from the train tracks before the train comes. Teddy also becomes difficult when the run
away from the old man in the junkyard. When the old man calls his father looney Teddy flips out. He
starts kicking and punching even though he s on the other side of the fence. This remains a problem
with the group because they have to spend time comforting him before they get back on the road
again. On more then one occasion Teddy got in small fights with almost

The Prospect Of Human Cloning
The prospect of human cloning was introduced in February 1997 when an embryologist was able to
produce a lamb through the process of cloning. Once the lamb was cloned, the question of whether
research for human cloning came into being. Society and researchers have feuded over whether human
cloning should be banned or allowed for research and reproduction purposes. Each side has reasonable
ideologies to continue their stance towards the opposing argument. Pro cloners believe that the
research developed from human cloning will benefit society, while those who oppose it believe there
are numerous risks in allowing the research. A decision will be reached when both sides compromise
and reach an agreement. In the novel Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning,
written by a committee of scientist and engineers, state that society will be the overall decision maker
for human cloning (2003, p. xi). Many individuals in society currently do not approve of the human
cloning research process. Some are concerned that the cloned child would have issues with its self
identity. and some believe that cloning a human is overall morally wrong. The prospect of social
identity problems arises from what Nestor Morales, a Professor of Psychology at New York, cites that
cloned children, knowing that they have been a planned to be a copy from another problem, ... , may
diminish their sense on uniqueness (Morales, 2009, p. 44). Objectors state there can be a potential

Analysis Of Three Days
Three Days
You have exactly three days, the scary Neptunian said. George Buckner turned off his 40 TV in shock.
According to the news report, Neptunians, the people of Neptune, have launched a missile that is
going to hit Earth in exactly 72 hours, or three days. If what the Neptunians say is true, then they
launched the missile because they want to destroy the Earth. They say that this is because pollution
from the Earth has reached their planet, and it is causing global warming on Neptune. George knows
that once his grandfather sees this, he will give George another one of his rants, probably somewhat
like this:
75 years ago, back in 2216, you could look up, and actually see blue sky, not grey clouds from
pollution. Now all you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alex said that he was having a party soon, and he was wondering if George would like to come. Deep
down, George knew that he had no chance at stopping the missile, so he might as well live it up for
possibly the last three days of his life.
George went over to Alex s house and found out that almost everyone there was in the same boat as
him. They saw the notice about 1 billion dollars and were really excited, but when they started to
research it, they discovered they are completely hopeless at stopping the missile. Knowing that
stopping the missile was extremely complicated for everyone, not just George, made him feel a bit
better. It also made it a bit easier to enjoy the dancing and singing, which were especially crazy
because everyone was pretty sure they only had 3 days to live.
After the party, George saw another notice, this one saying the missile is going to hit in exactly 2 days,
2 hours and 2 minutes. Seeing this gave George a great idea. His friend David Lesner, whose
nickname is 222, knows lots about technology. George decides to call him and see if they can meet,
and talk about how to stop the missile. He calls 222 and 222 says that he would be glad to try and help
George stop the missile. They decide to meet at 222 s house the next day after school.
Within five minutes of talking/working, they get into an argument. 222 says that since he knows more

Mental Illnesses In Children
Mental illnesses in children are so complex that psychiatrists cannot always detect them. It becomes
harder and harder for specialists to diagnose cerebral illnesses in young children due to the fact that a
child s brain is not done developing until they are around the age of twenty five. That is why some
diseases, such as Bipolar Disorder, are not diagnosed until the age of twenty one or older due to the
changing of hormones and puberty occurring in the body that disrupts/limits the functions of
important glands. This is an important factor, being that over three percent of American youth under
the age of seventeen are diagnosed with bipolar disorder, or other illnesses that should not be

lead to lifelong psychological consequences like low self esteem, depression, and relationship

The Story Of My Life
Mom, Leya s gonna be over any second to pick me up for school. I figured I d go ahead and tell you
bye since you don t look like you re coming down anytime soon. I plucked a sloppy kiss on her cheek
as she gave me an awkward half hug while shuffling through some more papers on her desk in a
nonplussed manner.
Sorry, Babe. Have a good day at school. Oh, before you leave! I dreadfully turned back to face her in
the doorway, aware that I now had her full attention for a reason I could tell that I wasn t going to like.

This caused me to snap my head back with my mouth completely agape as I took in the same stupid
smile on his face. How dare you?! Just... wait out here! UGH! He had me flustered, and he knew it; I
could tell by the cackle that next rose from the depths of his throat. I proceeded to change into the only
clean clothes I appeared to have left: an off the shoulder, mid sleeve cream blouse that Eric s ex
girlfriend had gotten me for my birthday (it was one of his longest relationships, and she was one
committed gal) and a pair of blue jean shorts that Leya had left at my place. It was just my luck that I
had to wear the most uncomfortable thing I owned the day Charlie unexpectedly decided to show up.
Mal? That you? Is something the matter? my mother called from the farthest reaches of her study.
Nothing, Ma! Just forgot my textbook! I yelled back.
All right! Be careful next time! We can t afford anything that s going to hinder you from getting a
scholarship! I knew she meant well, but the pressure still rose at the sharing of that comment.
Course, Mom! I then slipped quietly out the door and cleaned up the yogurt with the paper towels I
had grabbed from the kitchen on my way out the second time. I put the mess in the trash can out by

Paving the Way: How Financial Aid Awareness Affects College Access and Success
Literature Review
October 2008 In a time of ever rising college costs, financial aid is critical to increase college access
and success. Federal, state, and institutional aid programs help to ensure that students can afford
higher education regardless of economic background. Financial aid is most effective when students
and families learn about it early enough to make the right choices and plans about high school
coursework, family savings, work and earnings, and college options. This literature review explores
the questions of how and when students and families learn about college costs and financial aid, and
how the timing and substance of that information ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Latino non college going youths can not name one source of financial aid (Zarate and Pachon 2006).

financial aid. i) Many current and former community college students, especially those from two

Examples Of Feminism And Misandry
Feminism, Misandry, Sexism and Patriarchy The word feminist to me means a person, not generally a
woman, who fights for women and their rights, it means that a person wants equality for both men and
women
Feminism started out as a movement which helped women gain rights. It was a social, political
movement and it helped women win the right to vote, and so it helped to decrease the wage gap at
work, it helped women take maternity leave from work.
Feminism helped women gain rights to work as judges, it inspired popular figures to speak about it, it
helped women fight against the crimes and abuse etc.
It was empowering and liberating when it made women realize that only they could control their lives,
what they chose to work as, what they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It d rather become a word merely used by women, a word used for power. We still need feminism,
While the feminists have achieved a lot, we still have a long way to go.
Feminism can only cease to exist when women achieve equality with men in all the spheres.Feminism
needs women to be united as well, instead of women criticizing other women because of their choice
of relationships, or because of their choice to stay at home.
We need to change men in order to abolish patriarchy. We need to teach our brothers, sons, fathers and
husbands about how and why patriarchy affects women. We need to realize that gender constructs are
also racist and sexist and that trans women are also women, anyone who chooses to be a woman in
spite of their assigned gender at birth is a woman and should be accepted. One shouldn t have to satisfy
the society s ideas of feminism in order to identify as a woman. The change needs to start from our
homes, so as a whole, the new generation of males and femalesgrow up in a world where patriarchy/
matriarchy is non existent and where men and women, have the freedom to express themselves in any
way and without the fear of offending people just because they don t satisfy gender

Reaction Paper On Mungbean
Mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek), also known as green gram, is a major pulse crop of India.
Mungbean has been vastly grown on the Indian subcontinent as well as parts of Asia. Mungbean has
also been referred to be part of the poor man s meat because of its high nutritive value as well as its
ease of digestibility. India alone accounts for 65% of its world acreage and 54% of the production
(Biyani et al., 2012).The pulse is of short duration and is a multifunctional pulse as it is now known to
provide a good quality combination of fodder for livestock, green manure and food. Mungbean is
known to fix atmospheric nitrogen and its symbiotic association of nodulated roots and Rhizobia has
enabled farmers to save money on procuring N fertilisers. If grown in a cropping system mungbean s
rhizodeposition abilities might contribute significantly to higher C and N availability in soils to
succeeding crops (Zang et al., 2015). Mungbean has low input requirements and has the ability to
provide much required nutrients and moisture for a succeeding crop (Singh et al., 2011). India and the

Analysis Of The Film Memento
The film Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2001) uses the set of depth of field and angles to enhance the
film s connection to the audience. The use of cinematography works through the film using narration,
camera motions, and angles to show to the uniqueness and differ from other films. Memento s
organization of scenes and use of close ups give the audience their own idea and thought the process
to create a relation to the character and to try to understand him.
At the start of the film, the story is shown to be presented backward as one scene is color and another
in black and white, and narrated in two different ways. In the beginning scenes, there is an
introduction of a Polaroid fading back to white and blood running up the walls which correlates to
Leonard s memory and how the fading polaroid relates to his fading memories. There is a close up on
these scenes showing that the film is concentrating on this intensely, which captures the attention of
the audience. Memento s editing structure connects to Leonard s personality by showing close ups of
his tattoos and polaroids. This relates to the plot as important information is revealed from his mini
notes on each picture, such as the Don t believe his lies or He s the one, kill him which ultimately lead
to Teddy s death. What Leonard wrote regarding Teddy stains the relationship they have and causes
Leonard to misunderstand his relation with Teddy. Other close ups are the shots of tattoos, where one
was Remember Sammy Jankis which shows as a constant reminder of his situation and medical
condition, but also give the audience a sympathetic feeling toward his past. The little notes Leonard
gives himself convinces him that he is on the right path, however, as the audience, we can tell that the
information he is receiving is skewed. The constant reminder from the close ups shows Leonard s
reasoning of the motivations for his actions, although his constant need for his notes and living the
way he does gives off the idea that he is unstable. Leonard s close up in the mirror of the reflection of
his tattoo John G. raped and murdered my wife shows the audience what his motive and desires are
without needing Leonard s narration for this. The use of the

How Technology Has Changed The Modern World
Robotics have been traced back thousands of years. Robot like machines were mentioned in ancient
legends as well as in classical mythology. Mechanical servants were said to work as handmaidens and
clay robots allegedly helped fight enemies. Hephaestus, Greek god of fire and metal craft, even had
robotic three legged tables that helped him around his workshop. But an ancient engineer named Yan
Shi is credited by many for building the first real automata, which meant self operating machine. This
was during the Zhou dynasty in around 1000 BCE/CE. In 350 BCE/CE a Greek mathematician and
philosopher named Archytas created a mechanical bird that was propelled by steam. The Pigeon could
fly more than 650 feet (200m), long before airplanes were invented.
During 1st century AD, Heron of Alexandria described other machines that would later be the
beginnings of modern robotics. He designed robotic clocks, kitchen appliances and coin operated
machines. Other early robot mechanisms were built simply for entertainment. Early engineers created
delightful moving mechanical puppets, musicians, and dancers.
The first modern robot is considered to be the radio controlled boat designed and built by inventor
Nikola Tesla and made public in 1898. A wireless transmitter made the boat move, turn, and flash its
lights. Even though robots were soon built using on the same basic principles as Tesla s boat, they
were not yet able to perform pre programmed tasks. Once that hurdle was

Green Children By Samuel Foust
The Green Children of Woolpit There have been many legends and myths told throughout history.
There are so many different versions and theories of these stories that have been formed by one s
opinions of what they think happened. There are usually no hard facts to prove details of these events,
or if they even occurred. One of these stories is the green children of woolpit. There are many
different opinions and theories about it. Although there are many accounts of this story, they are all
pretty similar in telling the same story. It starts with two children, a girl and a boy, with green tinted
skin who had wondered to the village of Woolpit speaking a foreign language. The boy eventually
died when he and his sister became ill, but the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The argument that Foust presents is The reason I believe they are aliens is their green skin and the
language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us humans. Also, the place filled with
perpetual twilight is not a place that is on Earth (Foust n.p.). Even though I do not agree with this
theory, it is sensible as to why one would believe this. Without being presented with the facts of the
matter, it could seem as if there would be no other explanation other than aliens. However, the green
skin is easily explained by illness. The language the children might have seemed strange to the
villagers of woolpit, but they could have just been speaking Dutch, which is the language that most
Flemish people speak. Since the children were Flemish fleeing from their hometown, they most likely
used underground passages and even maybe sewer holes, it is possible the children could have
mistaken the places they traveled as being in perpetual twilight. In Foust s essay Green Children Are
Aliens , he presents the logical fallacy, Hasty Generalization, which means the author jumps to
conclusions based on little evidence. This logical fallacy is used when Foust says The reason I believe
they are aliens is their green skin and the language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us
humans. Foust provides little evidence to prove his theory that the children were aliens, the only
evidence he provides is they had green skin and spoke a language the villagers could not understand.
There are so many possibilities of what the green skin could have been caused by such as: arsenic
poisoning, hypochromic anemia, malnourishment, etc. Just because they had green skin does not mean
they were aliens. Also, the language the children spoke may have been just strange to the villagers of
Woolpit, chances are they were speaking Dutch. Dutch is the common

The Effects Of Dominance Aggression On Pet Dogs
Research Methods
Assessment One Critical Report
The authors of this particular research paper are Joaquin Perez Guisado and Andres Munoz Serrano.
The title of the article is Factors Linked to Dominance Aggression in Dogs and has been taken from
the Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances, Volume 8, Issue 2. The page numbers for the article
are 336 342 and the publish date is 2009. The main aim of this study was to determine factors that
might be linked to dominance aggression in pet dogs. The research carried out was qualitative and
involves the use of surveys and interviews, and explores certain factors relating to a topic. Qualitative
methods, such as interviews, are believed to provide a deeper understanding of social phenomena than
would be obtained from purely quantitative methods (Gill et al., 2008). There was significant
association between certain dog behaviour patterns and higher levels of dominance aggression. As a
whole, the research method and survey appears to have been considerably well done with only a few
adjustments to be made if it were to be repeated or further investigated.
The methodology for this article has both good and bad points to consider. For example the sample
size is very large and a total of 711 dogs were involved, with an equal amount (give or take a few) of
male and female dogs taking part. Only owners with dogs older than 12 months were interviewed and
there was a mixture of both pure bred and mixed breed dogs. A total of 47

Adolescents Identity In The Lost Boys By Janice Crowds
Adolescents, is a crucial time period for identity development, in young adults. Several physical and
mental changes take place during this time period. These changes can be a struggle for some
adolescents to handle by themselves. Adolescents begin to look more towards their peer relationships
to gain a better understanding of themselves. Adolescents start to spend more of their free time with
their friends, compared to the time they spend with their parents. Adolescents will look to gain friends
and become integrated into a clique, and eventually be put into a particular crowd. The adolescents
clique and crowd that they are associated with will help to develop the adolescents identity. The movie

A crowd can be described as a large group of adolescents, who may or may not be friends, who can be
easily identified by their interests, attitudes, abilities, or personal characteristics that they have in
common (Brown Lohr, 1987). Crowds help the adolescent to identify similarities and differences
between themselves and other peers. This in turn creates a hierarchy based on characteristics of the
different crowds. The crowd itself helps shape the adolescents identity, because the adolescent will
conform to the crowd norms. A crowd norm is a common rule of thought, action, or characteristic on
any given topic associated with the crowd itself. When a crowd norm is broken, there are non severe
consequences that occur from other members of the same crowd. For example Goths typically wear
black or dark clothing. If a Goth walks into class wearing a bright pink shirt and a white skirt, other
members of the crowd will ridicule her for the outfit. The Goth broke the crowd norm by wearing the
pink shirt and white skirt, and the consequences were that other members of the group ridiculed her.
These consequences keep the adolescent in check with the crowd norms. Therefore, the consequences
for breaking crowd norms helps shape the adolescents identity by shaping how the adolescent views
certain issues as well as other characteristics of

Western Operas Depict Inaccurate Facts about the Orients
In this essay, I am going to discuss and make a stand that western operas depict inaccurate facts about
the orients. In order to substantiate my stand, I will also look into some of the western operas that are
based on the orient. There are many definitions of Orientalism. Some examples are as followed.
According to the oxforddictionaries.com, Orientalism is Style, artifacts, or traits considered
characteristic of the peoples and cultures of Asia. (Oxford University Press 2014) Edwards Said,
author of the book Orientalism defines Orientalism as a corporate institution for dealing with the
Orient , dealing with it by making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by
teaching it, settling it, ruling over it: in short, Orientalism as a Western style for dominating,
restructuring, and having authority over the Orient. (Locke 1993, under Reflections on Orientalism in
Opera ) From the definitions available, it can concluded that the word orient in the term of Orientalism
is referring to either the Islamic Middle East (e.g. North Africa, Turkey, Arabia, Persia), or East and
South Asia (the Far East , e.g. India, Indochina, China, Japan).
Orientalism has been part of western arts for a long time. Orientalism in Music occurred since the late
Renaissance. This can be seen by a widely performed dance during that period, called the Moresca,
which was associated with the Moors of North Africa and was often performed with dark skin makeup

I Sing The Body Electric, By Walt Whitman
I Need You, Body and Soul
The poem I Sing the Body Electric, by Walt Whitman is one of the poems from the original 1855
edition of Leaves of Grass. In I Sing the Body Electric, Whitman explores the physical body in
connection with the soul. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul
by celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the
soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect
body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body
connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between
our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they are both one divine entity. In this writing Whitman
argues the two characteristics of this entity that rely on each other to become one and create the
masterpiece. Whitman explains how the beauty of the body is dependent upon the thoughts in our
mind and our thoughts are in turn the force that allows our body to contort beautifully in an outward
expression of movement. For example, in section one Whitman questions, And if the body were not
the soul, what is the soul? Knowing the answer Whitman continues on to answer the body is the soul,
our thoughts, our soul, is the body. In section six, Whitman explains how The male is not less the soul
nor more .
I agree with Walt Whitman in that the physical body and our thoughts, and soul

Essay on The Untruthfulness of Language
Untruthfulness of language Throughout the play King Lear, written by William Shakespeare the theme
of deception and the manipulation of language is the very root of the tragedy. The language used by
individuals affects the relationships around them, hides the dark nature within them and creates fights
between friends and family. The theme of deception goes hand in hand with the theme of appearance
vs reality since most of the characters alter the way they seem to others so they don t know what they
really are capable of. Throughout the play language is the cause to all the problems, since the
characters that are best at twisting their words, are only interested in improving their own lives and
gain more land as well as power. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Some Like It Hot by Billy Wilder
Some Like It Hot, Billy Wilder s 1959 musical comedy is filled with double meanings and sexual
overtones that also includes certain aspects such as cross dressing and homosexuality. In 1959, the
topic of homosexuality was taboo. If homosexuality was at all brought up, it was in a comical manner.
Viewing Some Like It Hot fifty five years later, one can not help but wonder if the films last line
spoken by Osgood, Well, nobody s perfect , is meant to be satirical or solely for the purpose of a
laugh. In the gender bending comedy, Some Like It Hot, directed by Billy Wilder, the affirmation of
heteronormativity is established through narrative, thematic, and iconographic conventions. The
narrative conventions that help to claim that Some Like It Hot is a heteronormativity are historical
settings. The historical setting in Some Like It Hot is the 1920 s, and that alone draws narrative
parallels between gender transgression and the Prohibition. The criminalisation of alcohol acts as a
reminder to how easily an activity of pleasure and personal choice can be included under
institutionalized morality. The setting of the 1920 s also provides a crucial reassurance to the viewer
that could potentially be transphobic, by creating a safe distance between the sites of transgression. To
tease with this type of viewer, Wilder added Osgood s line at the end for satirical comedic purposes.
The thematic conventions aid to reassure heteronormativity of Some Like It Hot. Themes such as

Team Dynamics And Decision Making For Project Success Essay
Team Dynamics and Decision Making for Project Success Project success often depends upon team
decision making. In the workplace, the team leader s job is to make decisions that benefit the team and
the whole company. This places them with a lot of responsibility. They must contemplate the options
and consciously select the decision making strategy most appropriate for the circumstances in which
the decision will be made and implemented. Often the decision making style chosen is among the
most significant roles of the project manager. Communication and interpersonal skills of the group
members influence the decision. The incorrect approach can cause problems within the group.

If the outcome for the decision is not positive, members of the organization begin to feel they could
have done a better job themselves and the leader may lose credibility. When overly used, it has a
number of disadvantages. Team members cannot contribute anything to, or learn anything from, the
process. They are less likely to be committed to implementing the decision. The absence of any
discussion also means that conflicts cannot be worked through, leaving ongoing resentment
unresolved. During decisions by the leader after group discussion, the team proposes and discusses
ideas, but the leader makes the final decision. During this type of decision making, the leader involves
the members of the organization. The leader maintains control of the decision because, although
outside information is considered, the leader alone decides. The leader is also completely responsible
for the good or bad outcome because of the decision. Advantages include some this is especially
valuable when team members could be negatively affected by the decision. In most cases, members
are informed before the decision is implemented so there are no surprises and usually they feel good
about their personal involvement. If the leader is a good communicator, and listens carefully to the
information collected, they will usually have a more accurate understanding of the problem and make
a better decision. Other perspectives

Types Of Multiple Personality Disorder
What is multiple personality disorder? Multiple personality disorder also known as Dissociative
Identity Disorder is a severe condition in which two or more distinct identities, or personality states,
are present in and interchangeably take control of an individual. DID is a disorder categorized by
identity division rather than a creation of separate personalities. The disorder is not due to the direct
psychological effects of a substance or of a general medical condition. DID was called Multiple
Personality Disorder until 1994, when the name was changed for a better understanding of the
condition. Multiple personality disorder fails to integrate several aspects of identity, memory, and
perception in a single multidimensional self. Generally, a prime identity carries the individual s given
name and is passive, dependent, guilty and depressed. When in control, each personality state, may be
experienced as if it has a different history, self image and identity. The secondary characteristics
including name, age and gender, vocabularies, general knowledge, and main mood, differentiate with
those of the prime identity. Certain situations or stressors can cause a particular personality to develop.
The various identities may deny awareness of one another, be critical of one another or seem to be in
an open struggle. Causes of Multiple Personality Disorder Why some people develop DID is not
completely understood, but they commonly report having experienced severe physical and

Wuthering Heights
1). I felt interested in a man who seemed more exaggeratedly reserved than myself...He is a dark
skinned gypsy in aspect, in dress and manners a gentleman, that is, as much a gentleman as many a
country squire: rather slovenly, perhaps, yet not looking amiss with his negligence, because he has an
erect and handsome figure and rather morose... I know, by instinct, his reserve springs from an
aversion to showy displays of feeling to manifestations of mutual kindliness. He ll love and hate,
equally under cover, and esteem it a species of impertinence to be loved or hated again. (Brontë 3 6)
~~ This passage from Wuthering Heights describes the mysterious Heathcliff, and his character and
intentions. The passage conveys two different views regarding Mr. Heathcliff, a gypsy and a
gentleman view. The thoughts of the reader just beginning to enter into Wuthering Heights as a novel
and the thoughts of Lockwood trying to find out what the place is like are almost identical. Like
Lockwood, readers of the novel confront all sorts of strange scenes and characters Heathcliff the
strangest of them all. People that have sundry villainous old guns and a couple of horse pistols do give
a gypsy feel. On the other hand Mr. Heathcliff is , in dress and manners a gentleman with a erect and
handsome figure (Brontë 5 6). The question then arises, is Mr. Heathcliff a gentleman figure or a

organisms in the rocky shore is the temperature, this is because the temperature of the water affects the
amount of dissolved oxygen the water can hold. Aquatic organisms are dependent on dissolved
oxygen for their survival in this ecosystem. Another abiotic factor is tidal movement, when both
organisms are not in water, they are exposed to prolonged periods of aerial exposure, this increases the
risk of desiccation for the sea slug and sea anemone. Another abiotic factor is the weather conditions,

so fast that became the top of all over the world, especially after the WWI. War is the best opportunity
to develop economy. So as America, America s economy was emerge from other state, especially on

was good at industry and America export a large number of goods to other country. And the inport tax

I am inclined to think that it was yes, the Great Depression was inevitable. The reasons why the Great
Depression happened I wrote over this paragraph. We might as well think from another point and
imagine some different situation from the originally. If the reasons I mention never happened in the
real world, was the Great Depression arise? From the first point, America was good at industy and
export a large number of cargo to another state. If American was not develop their country ability
about industy, the US may not be the top of the world, and can not provide the goods to other country
weak on the industy. And the inport tax was so low that the businessman come from other states could
has opportunty to sale cargos in America and make the money circulates quickly. However like this,
the America s economic also develop but slow and will come to the maximun finally. And you never
know whether this financial storm is strong than the Great Depression. And too much inport and too
fast money circulates will cause the country s inport more than the export, foreigen exchange reserve
reduce, the commodity of America has no competitive and keep in a negative condition. It is adversely
to a nation and also cause the financial slump. Thus, the first hypothetical is not establish. The second
point, the worker s wages. In the first of last certry, factory began to use machine to replace worker. So
the worker s salay increase a bit and did not hire more wokers, the productivity also rise substantial. If
the machine did not use for factory rather than employ more worker, the productivity will increase
slow and match the worker s production. And the distribution of income will balance. However, the
tight money policy make the impairment of assets was occurred. If people s income increase a lot and

Physics of Pinball Essay
Physics of Pinball
Pinball is a fast pace game of physics and skill. With the knowledge of the mechanics and the physics
of how the game works it can be played more effectively. Friction, gravity, potential energy, kinetic
energy, circuits and momentum are just a few of the aspects of physics apply.
The first thing to do to start a game of pinball is to insert the coin. This alone requires many
fundamental aspects of physics. The player inserts the coin and lets gravity take over. Gravity
accelerates the coin to a certain speed in a specific direction or what is called velocity. The coin, which
has mass, is now moving at a certain velocity. The coin now has linear momentum. To find the
momentum of the coin we would take the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The player has now compressed the spring in the ball shooter. The ball sitting in the ball shooter is at
rest. It will be at rest until acted on by an unbalanced force. This is Newton s first law of motion, the
law of inertia (Kirkpatrick and Wheeler p31). The ball shooter is then released the spring
decompresses and strikes the ball sending it up the incline to the top of the pinball playing field. The
strike on the ball is called the impulse. The time interval it takes for the ball momentum to change.
Since the ball has no momentum because it has zero velocity the ball shooter transfers its momentum
at the impulse (The Ball Shooter 2003). This also takes place in the time frame of about a second.
The ball now has kinetic energy. Kinetic energy like momentum in that it comes from the mass of the
object and its velocity. Kinetic energy was transferred from the plunger to the ball just like momentum
was but only if the collision was elastic. During and elastic collision kinetic energy is conserved. The
balls kinetic energy is half of its momentum squared. This means the balls momentum is its mass
multiplied by velocity, and then it is squared and divided by two. If the velocity or speed of the ball is
reduced by one half then the overall kinetic energy is reduced by a factor of four (Kirkpatrick and
Wheeler p.106)
The ball uses this kinetic energy to move up the usually 6 to 7 degree incline to the top of the playing
field. The kinetic

How Do Violent Video Games Affect American Culture
Over time, America has evolved both positively and negatively. In fact, our country has changed in
more of a negative way than positive. Violent video games and movies are a source of entertainment
which includes violence that is causing the American culture to decline. The American culture has
become very violent through entertainment.
Video games are a form of entertainment which have violence in them. Some violent video games are
Call of Duty and Star Wars Galaxies. The younger audience love to play these games and quickly
become addicted to them. A news education correspondent stated, Violent games were defined as
those where players acted out the killing, maiming, decapitating or mutilating of other human
characters (Coughlan). Usually, the goal of a violent video game is that humans are targeted to be
killed. A science reporter from the New York Times states, The issue is especially relevant today,
because the games are more realistic and bloodier than ever, and because most American boys play
them at some point. Girls play at lower rates and are significantly less likely to play violent games

Wage Discrimination Among Actors And Actresses
Since before women earned the right to vote, there has always been a demand for men and women to
work as an actor in the film industry. Their ability to captivate, move, and inspire earned them
recognition as movie stars. This rich history of stars, ranging from Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton
to Mary Pickford and Julia Roberts has seemingly been gender neutral. However, the question of wage
discrimination among actors and actresses is often not a point of discussion. Perhaps this is because
the public knows how well movie starts are paid, which begets the question, are actors and actress
rewarded differently?
When skimming the literate, the first point of interest is Forbes Magazine s list of the top paid actors

In addition, there seems to be a huge discrepancy between how actors and actresses fair at the box
office. This is reinforced when looking at the average box office figures. Ten actors have averaged
figures over $100 million while only two actresses managed to reach that milestone. If an actors and
actresses are paid based upon their box office power, it would seem that actors are better at selling
movie tickets relative to actresses. However, these figures might be a result of the types of roles
offered to men and women.
In order to examine gender discriminatory pay practices in Hollywood, there needs to be a comparison
between men and women performing the same exact job. In cinema, it could be the case that actors
and actresses are simply not working in exactly the same industry. Since they are not playing the same
character, and the fact that film offers different genres by which actors and actresses are defined
within, the pay difference may be due to the variation between roles. An action star generally gets paid
more relative to a melodramatic role, and throughout the history of Hollywood, men usually occupy
the role of big action star. Men like John Wayne, Tom Cruise, Cary Grant, Humphry Bogart, James
Cagney, and Arnold Schwarzenegger receive salary benefits because they are generational icons,

Argumentative Essay On Foreign Aid
Introduction
Most people feel obligated to assist others in need. In major crises like natural disasters, wars, medical
outbreaks, and the struggling economies of the developing world, many citizens of developed
countries believe it is morally right to provide assistance in situations like these, in response to being
more fortunate. However according to Mark Goldberg, an editor of the United Nations and global
affairs blog UN Dispatch and host of the Global Dispatches Podcast, discusses the truth behind
foreign aid. He reveals that foreign support is an issue that is widely misunderstood by the general
public, and is one of the most complicated subjects. Foreign policy has been under a huge debate and
there is an obvious need for reformation, for it lacks clear leadership and strategic planning. In fact
political leaders are very skeptic about foreign policy, and often find ways to push it back. What the
citizens of first world should be inquiring, is foreign aid actually what we think it is, or are the internal
reasons of the politics reshaping its truth?

was given priority as it contained many subcategories within itself. This section also allowed my
group mates to connect theory and practice of second language learning. My group mates were able to

their own personal experiences while learning a second language. The first discussion question asked
my group members to evaluate their own understanding of how language learning occurs and compare
it with the perspectives we covered. The second discussion question provided them a chance to assess
each perspective and think of one weakness and one strength for each. Overall if I were to re do my

The Japanese forces were not decisive on targeting the warships and aircraft carriers. The raid was
simply not enough to delay the U.S. from launching a counter attack in time for the Japanese to meet
their goals. My assumptions of a flawed Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor would still not negate the
fact that the U.S. forces were unprepared. The U.S. military commanders knew that war with Japan

How Did The Industrial Revolution Affect Rural England
Furthermore, the Industrial Revolution also had major consequences on the rural areas in Britain
during the nineteenth century. One of the main reasons the Industrial Revolution significantly
impacted rural areas in Britain was because many individuals that were living in more rural regions
were forced to relocate to cities, and more urban centres. Robert Marks in his passage, The Origins of
the Modern World A Global and Environmental Narrative From The Fifteenth To The Twenty First
Century, explains how during the Industrial Revolution, populations in major urban centres in Britain
grew dramatically. He states, The British manufacturing cities of Leeds, Sheffield, and Birmingham
grew 40 percent in a decade. Urbanization, which is a process

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System And Child Health
Executive Summary This research paper was written to provide the outlook of the opinions on the
most predominant behavioral health issues in the local community, as well as the approach in which
the organizations are to work together to address those behavioral health issues in the local
community. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) used the
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and Child Health Survey in order to determine
information in regards to those residents that are 18 and older. The Behavioral Risk Factor
Surveillance System and Child Health Survey is a federally funded random telephone survey of
Colorado residents. Information is gathered on a variety of health behaviors, conditions and
preventative health practices (State of Colorado, 2016). The University of Colorado Hospital is also
the medical campus for the state of Colorado. Due to the early donations from businessman Philip
Anchutz, the earliest phases of the development for the campus allowed the vision for the new medical
campus to flourish. In the start their vision statement in their master plan was overarching, with it
being seven paragraphs long, but it made for planning out the vision statements for each year after
easier with a stable foothold on what was required. While the University of Colorado Anschutz
Medical Campus contains multiple different healths science related schools and colleges. Located on a

Printing Organs And The Human Body
Printing organs has been talked about and attempted to be used for close to 40 years. Printing organs
can help with advancements in many ways because it could help many of the people that are on the
Organ Transplanting List, not to mention it could save countless lives as well. If organs are able to be
printed and executed for procedures and transplants, then we could reduce hospital bills that increase
during the time that you are waiting for an organ. Therefore, making a large advancement in the
healthcare field. Organ printing can be very difficult and must be executed very carefully considering
that the body may reject the new organ. Three dimensional (3D) printing is a manufacturing method in
which objects are made by fusing or depositing materials such as plastic, metal, ceramics, powders,
liquids, or even living cells in layers to produce a 3D object (Ventola, October 2014). It is incredible to
see how such materials can be used to be put together to make a living organism that can be used in a
human s body. As a person ages this could be very useful because organs tend to fail and become weak
when a person gets older they could potentially be used to replace the failing organs. There are many
different types of 3D printing and they do all come with some positives but at the same time they
come with some negatives as well. There is selective laser printing, an SLS printer uses powdered
material as the substrate for printing new objects. A laser draws the shape of

Examples Of Positive And Negative Framinging
Engin 270a Quiz
Please complete this quiz and the upload it to the assignment tab when you are finished.
Please define and explain how positive/negative framing works. Please provide one real world
example.
Framing can be defined as the manipulation of others through the use of their perception of reality and
the social constructs behind their behavior. By playing on the perspective with which one presents a
situation, one can influence the outcome of the decision process of the counterpart. Thus, positive and
negative framing are cognitive biases.
On one hand, negative framing uses the fact that when people are choosing between a sure loss and a
gamble, they tend to be risk seeking and they gamble. On the other hand, positive framing uses the
fact that when people are choosing between a sure win and a gamble, they tend to be risk averse and
choose the certain perceived as safe outcome.
Actually, one real world example of framing is the way the results new drugs are presented to
physicians. Depending on whether or not clinical trials results are presented as 5 out of 10 patients
taking this new drug report not being completely cured whereas 5 out of 10 patients taking this new
drug report being cured, it influences the decision made by the clinicians. From the mathematical
standpoint, there is no difference between both statements However, what happens in reality is that
this tends to influence physicians judgements of framing. This generic real world example follows
several papers in the literature like [1],[2].
Please define and explain how anchoring and adjustment works. Please provide one real world
example.
Anchoring and adjustment is a cognitive bias insidiously induced by the importance we give to the
first information it perceive. From this systematic mistake, the information imprints itself and we
unconsciously build upon it for future estimates, impressions, judgments of number, persons,
decisions.
Actually, one real world example of anchoring and adjustment is salary negotiation at play during a
job interview. Recruiters tend to ask the recruit their current/former salary. Afterwards, the move onto
the salary they offer you. What happens is that, our former

The Native People Of Okapaka
Most admired President, I m writing you today with a proposition, the native people of Okapaka have
welcomed me, and I only hope that you sir would gladly welcome there high chancellor into our home
country, as he did me.There ways are much different than ours, they wear Ostrich feathers and fur
coats, much different than our cotton clothing. Even with those differences, I have grow to love the
friendship we share. They are slowly learning English, and in return I am learning some of their native
tongue. These natives appear to have no religion, but they thank nature for everything it offers them.
Gradually, as they learn English, I have been telling them of Christianity. They are amazed of the

The History of Drug Prohibition Essays
Drug prohibition was not always accepted as it is today. Indeed, until the early twentieth century, there
were few drug laws at all in the United States. Before the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914, one could
buy heroin at the corner drugstore; even Coca Cola contained small amounts of cocaine until 1903
(Vallance 4). Some of the most proscribed drugs today were sold like candy and (quite literally) soda
pop. What caused the sudden shift to prohibition? Prohibitionists often point out that legal drugs at the
turn of the century led to an enormous drug problem, yet they never give any evidence that any public
menace due to drugs actually existed, other than showing that the public demanded drug laws
(Trebach 45). This argument ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Still, even after the Harrison Act of 1914 drugs were seen as a primarily medical problem. Over time,
the perception of drugs changed from objects of medical addiction to articles of immorality, until they
were seen primarily as a criminal problem in the 1930 s (Vallance 5). Much of this may have resulted
from alcohol Prohibition, which accustomed the American public to substance regulation. At the same
time, the typical drug user changed. Before 1914, the average user was typified by the heroin addict
Mrs. Dubose in Harper Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird: white, middle class, middle aged, and female.
David Courtwright notes that although fictitious, Mrs. Dubose personifies the American addict of the
late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries #8230;her sex, age of addiction, race, nationality, region,
class, and occupation #8230;[are] typical (qtd. in Trebach 56). As increasingly large numbers of
males, minorities, and the poor began using drugs, people s attitudes towards drugs changed. Duster
notes that middle America s moral hostility comes faster and easier when directed toward a young,
lower class Negro male, than toward a middle aged, middle class white female (21). Indeed, even drug
law crusader James Inciardi concedes that many early drug laws gained support because of racism and
xenophobia (Trebach 47). Thus, a demographic shift

The Nuclear Of Uranium And The Atomic Bomb
Introduction
Beginning in 1941 the exploration of uranium 235 and the atomic bomb began. The bomb would be
used against Japan to end the deadly encounters during World War II in exchange for unconditional
surrender. In 1945 the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima killing over 190,000 people and then another
bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing about 70,000 people. Japan surrendered bringing an end to the
war but this was only the beginning of what is known as the nuclear age.
Historical context
German physicist, Otto Hahn and German chemist, Fritz Strassmann, began conducting experiments
on uranium when, in 1938, the two were completely bewildered by the results of their experiment and
sent the outcome to physicist Lise Meitner who was astounded by the results as well. Otto Hahn, Fritz
Strassmann, and Lise Meitner had become the first to recognize that uranium could split and release
energy. ( Harnessing of Nuclear Fission. ) Soon after though, the war started.
World War 2 was started September 1, 1939 by Adolf Hitler and lasted until September 2, 1945. It was
the most widespread and deadliest war in history involving over 30 countries and resulting in about 50
million deaths. The major aggressors were Germany, Italy, and Japan. 6 million of the people killed
were in concentration camps because they were Jewish. ( World War II History )
During the war Germany took over a small town, St. Joachimsthal in Bohemia that contained a
uranium mine. Physicists Leo

Sins of Hester Prynne, Reverend Dimmesdale, and Roger...
The Sins of Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth in The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter is a study of the effects of sin on the hearts and minds of the
main characters, Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth. Hester, Dimmesdale, and
Chillingworth. Sin strengthens Hester, humanizes Dimmesdale, and turns Chillingworth into a demon.
Hester Prynne s sin was adultery. This sin was regarded very seriously by the Puritans, and was often
punished by death. Hester s punishment was to endure a public shaming on a scaffold for three hours
and wear a scarlet letter A on her chest for the rest of her life in the town. Although Hawthorne does
not pardon Hester s sin, he considers it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her pursuit in telling the truth is evident in the lines, In all things else, I have striven to be true! Truth
was the one virtue which I might have held fast, and did hold fast, through all extremity save when thy
good the life thy fame were put in question! Then I consented a deception. But a lie is never good,
even though death threaten the other side!
Even though Hester s sin is the one the book is titled after and centered around, it is not nearly the
worst sin committed. Hester learns from her sin, and grows strong, a direct result of her punishment.
The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair,
Solitude! These had been her teachers stern and wild ones and they had made her strong... Hester also
deceived Dimmesdale, also committing the sin of deception. She swore to Chillingworth that she
would keep their marriage a secret. She even withheld this from Dimmesdale, whom she truly loved.
Hester finally insisted on telling Dimmesdale and clearing her conscience. In this passage, you can see
how he grows angry at Hester: O Hester Prynne, thou little, little knowest all the horror of this thing!
And the shame! the indelicacy! the horrible ugliness of this exposure of a sick and guilty heart to the
very eye that would gloat over it! Woman, woman, thou art accountable for this! I cannot forgive thee!
Dimmesdale does forgive Hester. She has done

American Revolution Social Changes
The American Revolution was the point of change in the world. It was the first time that a democratic
government was developed and tested in a time where monarchies ruled Europe and it was the time
when the world saw that the concept of democracy could lead to the fundamental change in society,
specifically politically, socially, and economically. However, even though it was the point in change
for the world, to what extent did it change American society politically, socially, and economically in
the period between 1775 1800? The answer is that political, social, and economic effects of the
American Revolution impacted society to different extents and established ideas that would later
influence future movements and changes in America.
First, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Primarily, the Declaration was the main source of inspiration for social change towards women. The
very structure of the Declaration and the very language of it saying that all men are created equal led
to future movements for women s rights. For example, although 50 years out of the given time period,
the Seneca Falls Convention was the first major event in US history where women s rights were
presented and stood up for by using the Declaration for a basis of argument (those at the convention
rewrote the Declaration but wherever the word men was they replaced it with men and women ).
Arguments for the basis of women s rights also came from within the given time period as shown by
the drawing of a Patriot Woman holding a musket standing outside of a fort that has the English flag
waving on it signifying the belief that women can fight for their country just as well as men can [Doc.
A]. In addition, women of the time period expressed their displeasure at their lack of rights as Molly
Wallace says what then must my situation be, when my sex, my youth and inexperience all conspire to
make tremble at the task at which I have undertaken? in reference to women s inability to gain an
education. Therefore by the arguments presented, one can see that the American Revolution era was
the starting point in which ideas for social change, especially towards women s equality, was the
inspiration for future events and changes in American

The Haunting Of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson, revolutionized the horror genre of books. It started a
completely new trend in how horror books were written. Unlike previous books, The Haunting of Hill
House uses terror rather than horror to elicit fear and emotion from the reader and utilizes complex
relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the very different characters in the novel.
At the end of the book, the reader realizes that none of the questions that have been burning through
his or her head have been answered. Jackson refuses to shine a light in every corner, answering the
questions of her readers. Her original and (at that time) never before seen writing style caused readers
to speculate and create theories for their questions, one of which is what in the book haunts Hill
House? Because of this, readers from around the world have been theorizing what exactly stalks the
halls of Hill House and haunts the characters of the book sin 1959, the year the book was published.
There are hundreds of different theories, but in the end they all revolve around two smaller questions:
Was Hill House an entity that haunted its residents or was there something that haunted Hill House?
Before answering these questions, there is one question that all readers who know about Shirley
Jackson ask how was a loving wife and mother able to write such a dark novel that struck fear into
people s heart? To understand how she was capable of this, a deeper knowledge into

Latin American Airline Industry Latin American airline industry TAM Airlines is the largest airline in Latin America in terms of number of annual passengers flown.[16]Along the first countries to have regular airlines in Latin America were Colombia with Avianca, Chile with LAN Chile (today LAN Airlines), Dominican Republic with Air Dominicana, Mexico with Mexicana de Aviación, Brazil with Varig, and TACA as a brand of several airlines of Central American countries (Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Nicaragua). All the previous airlines started regular operations before World War II. The air travel market has evolved rapidly over recent years in Latin America. Most agreements permit airlines to fly from their home country to designated airports in the other country: some also extend the freedom to provide continuing service to a third country, or to another destination in the other country while carrying passengers from overseas. In the 1990s, open skies agreements became more common. These agreements take many of these regulatory powers from state governments and open up international routes to further competition. Open skies agreements have met some criticism, particularly within the European Union, whose airlines would be at a comparative disadvantage with the United States because of cabotage restrictions. [edit] Economic considerations Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan American World Airways, surveying his globe. The collapse of Pan Am, an airline often credited for shaping the international airline industry, in December 1991 highlighted the financial complexities faced by major airline companies.Historically, air travel has survived largely through state support, whether in the form of equity or subsidies. The airline industry as a whole has made a cumulative loss during its 120 year history, once the costs include subsidies for aircraft development and airport construction.[18][19] One argument is ... • 3. The Piano Play Analysis The piano music becomes rapidly more passionate, and then breaks off suddenly in mid phrase (Stoppard, 85). Immediately before this quote, Stoppard writes that there are now four hands present on the piano, rather than the usual two hands. The music became more intense over time, because the plot in the play is currently uprising to a main event. Thomasina mentions how her mother, Lady Croom, is in love with Count Zelinsky, who happens to be the man playing the piano. After Thomasina confesses this unknown statement, there are suddenly four hands on the piano, hinting at the readers that both Count and Lady Croom are now playing the piano. Love can be a powerful thing and the piano enhances this message by suddenly becoming more intense. Within the play, the background noise is critical when understanding the meaning of Arcadia. The main source of noise in this play is the piano. The piano plays a crucial role in both the past and present tense of the play. In the past, the piano is used when talked about waltzing because music and dancing go hand and hand together. Also, the piano resembled carnal embrace or otherwise known as sex in the past tense. On the other side, in the present tense the piano serves as a distraction. When the tempo of the piano is drastically changed, the characters seem to notice it more and comment more frequently on it than before. Whether it is in the past or present, noise changes the audience s mood throughout the play and pushes them towards ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In his novels, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, and In Dubious Battle, Steinbeck explores what it takes for a person to find true happiness in life. Steinbeck addresses the pursuit for happiness in one s life the American Dream , by questioning modern idea of it being achieved through material items and the path people take to accomplish it. Charles provides a perfect example of the importance a relationship has, and how not having one can bring out the darkest part of one s personality. Whereas he used East of Eden to focus on the American Dream of one s desire to make a better life for his or her children, Steinbeck uses Of mice and Men to focus on the unachievable aspect of the American Dream. In the novella, George and Lennie convey this theme through their reassurance that they will not have to tend to someone else s ranch and will soon have there own: O.K. Someday we re gonna get the jack together and we re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an a cow and some pigs and An live off the fatta the lan , (Of Mice and Men, p. 13). Throughout the novella George repeats this line more often and it even acts as one of the few things Lennie remembers. It appears the more times they reassure themselves of this dream, the more it shifts from reality to fantasy. This dream also catches the imagination of other characters in the novel, one being Crooks. Crooks, who naturally does not believe in the luxury of dreaming, becomes transformed by Lennie s thinking: ...If you...guys would want a hand to work for nothing just his keep, why I d come an lend a hand (Of Mice and Men, p. 73). • 8. The Prospect Of Human Cloning The prospect of human cloning was introduced in February 1997 when an embryologist was able to produce a lamb through the process of cloning. Once the lamb was cloned, the question of whether research for human cloning came into being. Society and researchers have feuded over whether human cloning should be banned or allowed for research and reproduction purposes. Each side has reasonable ideologies to continue their stance towards the opposing argument. Pro cloners believe that the research developed from human cloning will benefit society, while those who oppose it believe there are numerous risks in allowing the research. A decision will be reached when both sides compromise and reach an agreement. In the novel Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning, written by a committee of scientist and engineers, state that society will be the overall decision maker for human cloning (2003, p. xi). According to the news report, Neptunians, the people of Neptune, have launched a missile that is going to hit Earth in exactly 72 hours, or three days. If what the Neptunians say is true, then they launched the missile because they want to destroy the Earth. They say that this is because pollution from the Earth has reached their planet, and it is causing global warming on Neptune. Deep down, George knew that he had no chance at stopping the missile, so he might as well live it up for possibly the last three days of his life. George went over to Alex s house and found out that almost everyone there was in the same boat as him. They saw the notice about 1 billion dollars and were really excited, but when they started to research it, they discovered they are completely hopeless at stopping the missile. Knowing that stopping the missile was extremely complicated for everyone, not just George, made him feel a bit better. It also made it a bit easier to enjoy the dancing and singing, which were especially crazy because everyone was pretty sure they only had 3 days to live. After the party, George saw another notice, this one saying the missile is going to hit in exactly 2 days, 2 hours and 2 minutes. Seeing this gave George a great idea. His friend David Lesner, whose nickname is 222, knows lots about technology. George decides to call him and see if they can meet, and talk about how to stop the missile. He calls 222 and 222 says that he would be glad to try and help George stop the missile. They decide to meet at 222 s house the next day after school. Paving the Way: How Financial Aid Awareness Affects College Access and Success Literature Review October 2008 In a time of ever rising college costs, financial aid is critical to increase college access and success. Financial aid is most effective when students and families learn about it early enough to make the right choices and plans about high school coursework, family savings, work and earnings, and college options. Examples Of Feminism And Misandry Feminism, Misandry, Sexism and Patriarchy The word feminist to me means a person, not generally a woman, who fights for women and their rights, it means that a person wants equality for both men and women Feminism started out as a movement which helped women gain rights. It was a social, political movement and it helped women win the right to vote, and so it helped to decrease the wage gap at work, it helped women take maternity leave from work. We need to change men in order to abolish patriarchy. We need to teach our brothers, sons, fathers and husbands about how and why patriarchy affects women. We need to realize that gender constructs are also racist and sexist and that trans women are also women, anyone who chooses to be a woman in spite of their assigned gender at birth is a woman and should be accepted. One shouldn t have to satisfy the society s ideas of feminism in order to identify as a woman. Mungbean has been vastly grown on the Indian subcontinent as well as parts of Asia. Mungbean has also been referred to be part of the poor man s meat because of its high nutritive value as well as its ease of digestibility. India alone accounts for 65% of its world acreage and 54% of the production (Biyani et al., 2012).The pulse is of short duration and is a multifunctional pulse as it is now known to provide a good quality combination of fodder for livestock, green manure and food. Mungbean is known to fix atmospheric nitrogen and its symbiotic association of nodulated roots and Rhizobia has enabled farmers to save money on procuring N fertilisers. If grown in a cropping system mungbean s rhizodeposition abilities might contribute significantly to higher C and N availability in soils to succeeding crops (Zang et al., 2015). Mungbean has low input requirements and has the ability to provide much required nutrients and moisture for a succeeding crop (Singh et al., 2011). • 16. Analysis Of The Film Memento The film Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2001) uses the set of depth of field and angles to enhance the film s connection to the audience. The use of cinematography works through the film using narration, camera motions, and angles to show to the uniqueness and differ from other films. Memento s organization of scenes and use of close ups give the audience their own idea and thought the process to create a relation to the character and to try to understand him. At the start of the film, the story is shown to be presented backward as one scene is color and another in black and white, and narrated in two different ways. In the beginning scenes, there is an introduction of a Polaroid fading back to white and blood running up the walls which correlates to Leonard s memory and how the fading polaroid relates to his fading memories. There is a close up on these scenes showing that the film is concentrating on this intensely, which captures the attention of the audience. Memento s editing structure connects to Leonard s personality by showing close ups of his tattoos and polaroids. This relates to the plot as important information is revealed from his mini notes on each picture, such as the Don t believe his lies or He s the one, kill him which ultimately lead to Teddy s death. What Leonard wrote regarding Teddy stains the relationship they have and causes Leonard to misunderstand his relation with Teddy. Other close ups are the shots of tattoos, where one was Remember Sammy Jankis which shows as a constant reminder of his situation and medical condition, but also give the audience a sympathetic feeling toward his past. The little notes Leonard gives himself convinces him that he is on the right path, however, as the audience, we can tell that the information he is receiving is skewed. The constant reminder from the close ups shows Leonard s reasoning of the motivations for his actions, although his constant need for his notes and living the way he does gives off the idea that he is unstable. Leonard s close up in the mirror of the reflection of his tattoo John G. raped and murdered my wife shows the audience what his motive and desires are without needing Leonard s narration for this. • 17. How Technology Has Changed The Modern World Robotics have been traced back thousands of years. Robot like machines were mentioned in ancient legends as well as in classical mythology. Mechanical servants were said to work as handmaidens and clay robots allegedly helped fight enemies. Hephaestus, Greek god of fire and metal craft, even had robotic three legged tables that helped him around his workshop. But an ancient engineer named Yan Shi is credited by many for building the first real automata, which meant self operating machine. This was during the Zhou dynasty in around 1000 BCE/CE. In 350 BCE/CE a Greek mathematician and philosopher named Archytas created a mechanical bird that was propelled by steam. The Pigeon could fly more than 650 feet (200m), long before airplanes were invented. During 1st century AD, Heron of Alexandria described other machines that would later be the beginnings of modern robotics. He designed robotic clocks, kitchen appliances and coin operated machines. Other early robot mechanisms were built simply for entertainment. Early engineers created delightful moving mechanical puppets, musicians, and dancers. The first modern robot is considered to be the radio controlled boat designed and built by inventor Nikola Tesla and made public in 1898. A wireless transmitter made the boat move, turn, and flash its lights. The argument that Foust presents is The reason I believe they are aliens is their green skin and the language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us humans. Also, the place filled with perpetual twilight is not a place that is on Earth (Foust n.p.). Even though I do not agree with this theory, it is sensible as to why one would believe this. Without being presented with the facts of the matter, it could seem as if there would be no other explanation other than aliens. However, the green skin is easily explained by illness. The language the children might have seemed strange to the villagers of woolpit, but they could have just been speaking Dutch, which is the language that most Flemish people speak. Since the children were Flemish fleeing from their hometown, they most likely used underground passages and even maybe sewer holes, it is possible the children could have mistaken the places they traveled as being in perpetual twilight. In Foust s essay Green Children Are Aliens , he presents the logical fallacy, Hasty Generalization, which means the author jumps to conclusions based on little evidence. This logical fallacy is used when Foust says The reason I believe they are aliens is their green skin and the language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us humans. Foust provides little evidence to prove his theory that the children were aliens, the only evidence he provides is they had green skin and spoke a language the villagers could not understand. There are so many possibilities of what the green skin could have been caused by such as: arsenic poisoning, hypochromic anemia, malnourishment, etc. Just because they had green skin does not mean they were aliens. The Effects Of Dominance Aggression On Pet Dogs Research Methods Assessment One Critical Report The authors of this particular research paper are Joaquin Perez Guisado and Andres Munoz Serrano. The title of the article is Factors Linked to Dominance Aggression in Dogs and has been taken from the Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances, Volume 8, Issue 2. The page numbers for the article are 336 342 and the publish date is 2009. The main aim of this study was to determine factors that might be linked to dominance aggression in pet dogs. The research carried out was qualitative and involves the use of surveys and interviews, and explores certain factors relating to a topic. Qualitative methods, such as interviews, are believed to provide a deeper understanding of social phenomena than would be obtained from purely quantitative methods (Gill et al., 2008). There was significant association between certain dog behaviour patterns and higher levels of dominance aggression. As a whole, the research method and survey appears to have been considerably well done with only a few adjustments to be made if it were to be repeated or further investigated. The methodology for this article has both good and bad points to consider. For example the sample size is very large and a total of 711 dogs were involved, with an equal amount (give or take a few) of male and female dogs taking part. Only owners with dogs older than 12 months were interviewed and there was a mixture of both pure bred and mixed breed dogs. A total of 47 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A crowd can be described as a large group of adolescents, who may or may not be friends, who can be easily identified by their interests, attitudes, abilities, or personal characteristics that they have in common (Brown Lohr, 1987). Crowds help the adolescent to identify similarities and differences between themselves and other peers. This in turn creates a hierarchy based on characteristics of the different crowds. The crowd itself helps shape the adolescents identity, because the adolescent will conform to the crowd norms. A crowd norm is a common rule of thought, action, or characteristic on any given topic associated with the crowd itself. When a crowd norm is broken, there are non severe consequences that occur from other members of the same crowd. For example Goths typically wear black or dark clothing. If a Goth walks into class wearing a bright pink shirt and a white skirt, other members of the crowd will ridicule her for the outfit. The Goth broke the crowd norm by wearing the pink shirt and white skirt, and the consequences were that other members of the group ridiculed her. These consequences keep the adolescent in check with the crowd norms. Therefore, the consequences for breaking crowd norms helps shape the adolescents identity by shaping how the adolescent views certain issues as well as other characteristics of ... In order to substantiate my stand, I will also look into some of the western operas that are based on the orient. There are many definitions of Orientalism. Some examples are as followed. According to the oxforddictionaries.com, Orientalism is Style, artifacts, or traits considered characteristic of the peoples and cultures of Asia. (Oxford University Press 2014) Edwards Said, author of the book Orientalism defines Orientalism as a corporate institution for dealing with the Orient , dealing with it by making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by teaching it, settling it, ruling over it: in short, Orientalism as a Western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority over the Orient. (Locke 1993, under Reflections on Orientalism in Opera ) From the definitions available, it can concluded that the word orient in the term of Orientalism is referring to either the Islamic Middle East (e.g. North Africa, Turkey, Arabia, Persia), or East and South Asia (the Far East , e.g. India, Indochina, China, Japan). Orientalism has been part of western arts for a long time. Orientalism in Music occurred since the late Renaissance. In I Sing the Body Electric, Whitman explores the physical body in connection with the soul. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul by celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they are both one divine entity. In this writing Whitman argues the two characteristics of this entity that rely on each other to become one and create the masterpiece. Whitman explains how the beauty of the body is dependent upon the thoughts in our mind and our thoughts are in turn the force that allows our body to contort beautifully in an outward expression of movement. For example, in section one Whitman questions, And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul? Knowing the answer Whitman continues on to answer the body is the soul, our thoughts, our soul, is the body. In section six, Whitman explains how The male is not less the soul nor more . Viewing Some Like It Hot fifty five years later, one can not help but wonder if the films last line spoken by Osgood, Well, nobody s perfect , is meant to be satirical or solely for the purpose of a laugh. In the gender bending comedy, Some Like It Hot, directed by Billy Wilder, the affirmation of heteronormativity is established through narrative, thematic, and iconographic conventions. The narrative conventions that help to claim that Some Like It Hot is a heteronormativity are historical settings. The historical setting in Some Like It Hot is the 1920 s, and that alone draws narrative parallels between gender transgression and the Prohibition. The criminalisation of alcohol acts as a reminder to how easily an activity of pleasure and personal choice can be included under institutionalized morality. The setting of the 1920 s also provides a crucial reassurance to the viewer that could potentially be transphobic, by creating a safe distance between the sites of transgression. The ball sitting in the ball shooter is at rest. It will be at rest until acted on by an unbalanced force. This is Newton s first law of motion, the law of inertia (Kirkpatrick and Wheeler p31). The ball shooter is then released the spring decompresses and strikes the ball sending it up the incline to the top of the pinball playing field. The strike on the ball is called the impulse. The time interval it takes for the ball momentum to change. Since the ball has no momentum because it has zero velocity the ball shooter transfers its momentum at the impulse (The Ball Shooter 2003). This also takes place in the time frame of about a second. The ball now has kinetic energy. Kinetic energy like momentum in that it comes from the mass of the object and its velocity. Kinetic energy was transferred from the plunger to the ball just like momentum was but only if the collision was elastic. During and elastic collision kinetic energy is conserved. The balls kinetic energy is half of its momentum squared. This means the balls momentum is its mass multiplied by velocity, and then it is squared and divided by two. If the velocity or speed of the ball is reduced by one half then the overall kinetic energy is reduced by a factor of four (Kirkpatrick and Wheeler p.106) The ball uses this kinetic energy to move up the usually 6 to 7 degree incline to the top of the playing field. • 33. How Do Violent Video Games Affect American Culture Over time, America has evolved both positively and negatively. In fact, our country has changed in more of a negative way than positive. Violent video games and movies are a source of entertainment which includes violence that is causing the American culture to decline. The American culture has become very violent through entertainment. Video games are a form of entertainment which have violence in them. Some violent video games are Call of Duty and Star Wars Galaxies. The younger audience love to play these games and quickly become addicted to them. A news education correspondent stated, Violent games were defined as those where players acted out the killing, maiming, decapitating or mutilating of other human characters (Coughlan). Usually, the goal of a violent video game is that humans are targeted to be killed. A science reporter from the New York Times states, The issue is especially relevant today, because the games are more realistic and bloodier than ever, and because most American boys play them at some point. Girls play at lower rates and are significantly less likely to play violent games (Carey). In society, boys will play more video games and play more violent ones rather than girls. • 34. Wage Discrimination Among Actors And Actresses Since before women earned the right to vote, there has always been a demand for men and women to work as an actor in the film industry. Their ability to captivate, move, and inspire earned them recognition as movie stars. This rich history of stars, ranging from Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton to Mary Pickford and Julia Roberts has seemingly been gender neutral. However, the question of wage discrimination among actors and actresses is often not a point of discussion. Perhaps this is because the public knows how well movie starts are paid, which begets the question, are actors and actress rewarded differently? In addition, there seems to be a huge discrepancy between how actors and actresses fair at the box office. This is reinforced when looking at the average box office figures. Ten actors have averaged figures over $100 million while only two actresses managed to reach that milestone. If an actors and actresses are paid based upon their box office power, it would seem that actors are better at selling movie tickets relative to actresses. However, these figures might be a result of the types of roles offered to men and women. In order to examine gender discriminatory pay practices in Hollywood, there needs to be a comparison between men and women performing the same exact job. In cinema, it could be the case that actors and actresses are simply not working in exactly the same industry. Since they are not playing the same character, and the fact that film offers different genres by which actors and actresses are defined within, the pay difference may be due to the variation between roles. An action star generally gets paid more relative to a melodramatic role, and throughout the history of Hollywood, men usually occupy the role of big action star. Men like John Wayne, Tom Cruise, Cary Grant, Humphry Bogart, James Cagney, and Arnold Schwarzenegger receive salary benefits because they are generational icons, starring in big budget, high grossing films. However according to Mark Goldberg, an editor of the United Nations and global affairs blog UN Dispatch and host of the Global Dispatches Podcast, discusses the truth behind foreign aid. During my introduction, key points from each of the 5 perspectives were discussed. The cognitive perspective was given priority as it contained many subcategories within itself. This section also allowed my group mates to connect theory and practice of second language learning. My group mates were able to connect to the noticing hypothesis, processability theory and the three principles of practice through their own personal experiences while learning a second language. The first discussion question asked my group members to evaluate their own understanding of how language learning occurs and compare it with the perspectives we covered. The second discussion question provided them a chance to assess each perspective and think of one weakness and one strength for each. Overall if I were to re do my seminar, I would like to provide more attention to the other perspectives. I would add more discussion questions in order to stimulate more in depth discussions. Similarly, adding supplemental information from an outside source to further discussion and connect the theories to pedagogy. If organs are able to be printed and executed for procedures and transplants, then we could reduce hospital bills that increase during the time that you are waiting for an organ. Therefore, making a large advancement in the healthcare field. Organ printing can be very difficult and must be executed very carefully considering that the body may reject the new organ. Three dimensional (3D) printing is a manufacturing method in which objects are made by fusing or depositing materials such as plastic, metal, ceramics, powders, liquids, or even living cells in layers to produce a 3D object (Ventola, October 2014). • 44. Examples Of Positive And Negative Framinging Engin 270a Quiz Please complete this quiz and the upload it to the assignment tab when you are finished. Please define and explain how positive/negative framing works. Please provide one real world example. Framing can be defined as the manipulation of others through the use of their perception of reality and the social constructs behind their behavior. By playing on the perspective with which one presents a situation, one can influence the outcome of the decision process of the counterpart. Thus, positive and negative framing are cognitive biases. On one hand, negative framing uses the fact that when people are choosing between a sure loss and a gamble, they tend to be risk seeking and they gamble. On the other hand, positive framing uses the fact that when people are choosing between a sure win and a gamble, they tend to be risk averse and choose the certain perceived as safe outcome. Actually, one real world example of framing is the way the results new drugs are presented to physicians. Depending on whether or not clinical trials results are presented as 5 out of 10 patients taking this new drug report not being completely cured whereas 5 out of 10 patients taking this new drug report being cured, it influences the decision made by the clinicians. From the mathematical standpoint, there is no difference between both statements However, what happens in reality is that this tends to influence physicians judgements of framing. This generic real world example follows several papers in the literature like [1],[2]. Please define and explain how anchoring and adjustment works. Please provide one real world example. Anchoring and adjustment is a cognitive bias insidiously induced by the importance we give to the first information it perceive. From this systematic mistake, the information imprints itself and we unconsciously build upon it for future estimates, impressions, judgments of number, persons, decisions. Actually, one real world example of anchoring and adjustment is salary negotiation at play during a job interview. Recruiters tend to ask the recruit their current/former salary. • 46. The History of Drug Prohibition Essays Drug prohibition was not always accepted as it is today. Indeed, until the early twentieth century, there were few drug laws at all in the United States. Before the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914, one could buy heroin at the corner drugstore; even Coca Cola contained small amounts of cocaine until 1903 (Vallance 4). Some of the most proscribed drugs today were sold like candy and (quite literally) soda pop. What caused the sudden shift to prohibition? Prohibitionists often point out that legal drugs at the turn of the century led to an enormous drug problem, yet they never give any evidence that any public menace due to drugs actually existed, other than showing that the public demanded drug laws (Trebach 45). Over time, the perception of drugs changed from objects of medical addiction to articles of immorality, until they were seen primarily as a criminal problem in the 1930 s (Vallance 5). Much of this may have resulted from alcohol Prohibition, which accustomed the American public to substance regulation. At the same time, the typical drug user changed. Before 1914, the average user was typified by the heroin addict Mrs. Dubose in Harper Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird: white, middle class, middle aged, and female. David Courtwright notes that although fictitious, Mrs. Dubose personifies the American addict of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries #8230;her sex, age of addiction, race, nationality, region, class, and occupation #8230;[are] typical (qtd. in Trebach 56). As increasingly large numbers of males, minorities, and the poor began using drugs, people s attitudes towards drugs changed. Duster notes that middle America s moral hostility comes faster and easier when directed toward a young, lower class Negro male, than toward a middle aged, middle class white female (21). Indeed, even drug law crusader James Inciardi concedes that many early drug laws gained support because of racism and xenophobia (Trebach 47). Thus, a demographic shift ... Japan surrendered bringing an end to the war but this was only the beginning of what is known as the nuclear age. Historical context German physicist, Otto Hahn and German chemist, Fritz Strassmann, began conducting experiments on uranium when, in 1938, the two were completely bewildered by the results of their experiment and sent the outcome to physicist Lise Meitner who was astounded by the results as well. Unlike previous books, The Haunting of Hill House uses terror rather than horror to elicit fear and emotion from the reader and utilizes complex relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the very different characters in the novel. At the end of the book, the reader realizes that none of the questions that have been burning through his or her head have been answered.
