This document defines key terms and conventions used on magazine covers. It describes elements like the masthead, tag line, main image, cover lines, puffs/pugs, buzzwords, thumbnail images, and barcode. These elements are used to attract readers' attention, highlight the main stories, and provide key information about the magazine through elements placed at the top, bottom, and sides of the cover. While this cover does not include thumbnail images, many of the other typical cover elements are defined.

2. KeyTerms/Conventions Definition
Header and footer bar Used at the very top and bottom of the front cover, May have small amount of information on
them and can be used with colour to highlight the cover itself.
Masthead This is the title on the front of the magazine, usually made to be recognisable and very eye-
catching.
Tag line This is usually under the masthead, and is used to give a short description, highlighting key
information for the reader.
Main image/ anchorage Usually concerning main story of magazine, various shots can be used to convey genre and
audience.
Main cover line This is the second largest text on the cover and usually concerns and puts the main image into
context.
Puff/Pug These are used to catch the readers attention and may have promotional offers or free items
to give away.
Buzzwords Used to attract attention, usually with main article and would use words such as exclusive,
free or extra.
Cover lines Smaller lines of text on cover, may concern smaller stories within the magazine.
Thumbnail images Used to spread out content and keep the audience interested with more content.
Information/barcode Can be positioned in multiple places, usually near the bottom and to the side. Can include
date, price and issue number of the magazine.
