Karachi--- The Largest city of Pakistan.
Population of 24 million.
On daily basis 12000 tons of solid waste is produced.
According to world bank: SMW generation per person is1.2kg.

3. RATE OF SOLID WASTE PRODUCTION:
In producing
solid waste,
Karachi has
trodden an
upward
trajectory:
In 1974 it was
2000 tons per
day.
In 2001 it was
6000 tons per
day.
In 2005 it had
leapfrogged to
9000 tones
per day.
In 2019 it is
12000-13000
tons per day.

4. COMPONENT AND SOURCES OF GARBAGE

Coastlines have also been polluted by this solid waste thrown in open area.
This waste also contain a massive amount of plastics which is being decomposed into
microplastics.
Garbage collection in the oceans is increasing in such a way that a garbage patch known as
GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATH is formed in the oceans which is 2X the American state TEXOS

It pollutes our soils.

diseases to mankind

fever, gastroenteritis
and other illnesses.
It can cause the
production and
proliferation of
different pests
including worms and
mosquitos etc.
In Karachi in-addition
to the above
mentioned
problems, there is
also a big problem of
roads and streets
covered with
garbage and people
face difficulty while
travelling.

8. LAWS AND POLICIES BY GOVERNMENT:
In 1995, the Japanese International Coordination Agency(JICA) invested in solid
waste management program in Karachi but the agreement was cancelled due to
some reasons.
In the mid 1990s a landfill site at Surjani was identified with the help of World
Bank.(Gond pass and Jam Chakhro)
In 1997-98 a contract with Chinese firm was signed for integrated waste , land
filling, door to door collection and construction of Garbage Transfer Stations(GTS)
but it was terminated later on.
In the local Government Ordinance(2001), the waste collection responsibility was
of Town Administrators and treatment and disposal of refuse was handed over to
City District Government Karachi (CDGK).

9. WHY THIS WASTE IS ACCUMULATED?
Poor waste planning , lack
of recycling and a

We should literate our people.
We should control our population growth rate.
We must consider the policies, adaptations and suggestions focused by EUROPEAN COUNTRIES like
different recycling techniques like plasma arc gasification and pyrolysis.
We must build a garbage power plant, instead of giving it to China. In this way we can generate
energy and garbage can be reduced.
We mustn’t burn our solid waste because it produces toxic gases.
