Justification of Design
Appearance
When thinking about the appearance of our design we took into account where it was
going to be used, who it was going to be used by and how often it would be used. When
looking at these we firstly knew it was going to be a portable device that could be used
on site or on the go which meant that anything we were including in the device had to
be easily viewable and accessible if being used in between jobs in the truck to find the
next location. If the device had to be close to the eye to use then it would be rendered
useless in the journey t o and from different locations.
We then decided on the colour scheme with the intention
for it to be simplistic, elegant and easy to see. This lead to a
blue colour scheme with the headings highlighted on a
darker blue and the font in white over this scheme as it is
easy to see and read all text on the blue background and a
darker blue stands away easily from the rest for the
headings. The white font still stands clearly away from any
of the blue colours chosen so the user will be able to use this
in any scenario where the light might even be glaring onto the screen.
We kept this colour scheme without the entire design as we don’t want the user to be
confused in any way and it was our general thought that introducing different colours in
different parts of the design would add confusion to why they weren’t anywhere else in
the device.

Interaction
The device is touch screen and includes all the necessary functions they will need on a
day to day basis e.g. client details, E-Mails, Sat-Nav and their next destination meaning
that they do not need any other equipment with them. The home screen (shown above)
gives them direct access to any of their required needs and once selected then shows
them the required details for example if you were to click on Client it would show you
information about that client. At the top of the device it shows the time, date and any
messages the user may have despite where in the device you are as these were seen to
be key information for the user and it will allow them to know if they are on time for a
job or if they have any urgent messages. Also we have made the main links of the home
screen as shortcuts at the bottom of every page (other than the home screen) allowing
them to navigate the device with more efficiency.

We made these decisions based on the user of the device. Knowing that the user may
not have advanced IT skills but would be using it day to day meant that we had to
develop a simple yet effective device which is why we chose to use a Graphical User
Interface (GUI). GUI’s are still one of the most effective ways of interacting with a
computer system and are simple to use meaning less training for the users. Looking at
the current market you notice that most computer related products use GUI’s because
of their simple nature to use and interact such as Laptops, Games Consoles and even
mobile phones.
