Justice In The Middle East
With fearsome, terrifying headlines featured in popular news sites like The Economist, the Middle
East seems to be an even more chaotic region of the world. Understandably, when one thinks about
the Middle East, one cannot help but imagine the constant chaos and political strife led by corrupt
officials and leaders against democracy. This short–sighted and heavily biased perspective of the
Middle East may not be entirely incorrect, however it neither does the Middle East justice. The
general people do not fully realize the rich political history and circumstances that led to such a
diverse history in one of the oldest civilized regions of the world. Middle Eastern history dates back
to nearly 2500 BC in Mesopotamia and since then, has been ... Show more content on

Kemal grew up on a farm and was educated in a secular private school, where he would later enlist
in a military school and become well recognized amongst his peers and teachers. By 1923, Kemal
was called the "hero of Ghazi" and gained a reputation amongst the Islamic world as a war hero
against the Japanese in 1905, Western and European imperialism, and triumphs against in an Islamic
struggle against the major powers (Howard 91; Hanioglu 129). After the Ottoman Empire had been
officially terminated, Kemal emerged as one of the principal leaders of the popular struggle against
partition. Kemal had realized that Allied diplomacy was pursuing objectives wholly at odds with
those of the burgeoning Turkish nationlist movement" (Hanioglu 92–93). Kemal, with a highly
revered position and achievements had easily declared Turkey to be a state governed by a republican
form of government in October 29, 1923 (Howard 93). In order to ensure that this new government
remains popular with the people, he replaced religion with a new ideology he created a secular
nationalistic identity through his new nationalistic system,

Middle East Essay
In this week's reading, we cover various topic about the history of the Middle–East, and its
complexity as it relates to the contemporary crises in which destabilizing the Greater Middle–East.
To be frank, I believe there are two majors issues destabilizing the Middle–East: (1) the rise of the
Islamic State (ISIS) and (2) a future nuclear–arm Islamic Iran. It worthy of noting that the intricacy
of the Middle East did not start with ISIS, arguably so, the Middle–East was always a chaotic place.
After the rise of ISIS, this organization managed to expand its operation beyond the Middle. The
ISIS group became and still is the most dangerous criminal organization. Among many of their
criminal activities, they are in part responsible for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later that month, Baghdadi announced the creation of a caliphate, or Islamic state. By then, ISIS
had captured large swaths of Syria and Iraq" (Hanna, CNN). As the ISIS organizations keep on
expanding their operations in both Iraq and Syria, they become one of the most serious threat to both
U.S, the Middle–East, and for the world.
With respect to Islamic Iran becoming a future nuclear–armed is a major concern not only for the
Middle–East especially for the Unites States and its allies. It is unclear to know exactly of the
progress of the Iranian in their nuclear capability ambition. Intelligence suggest that the Iranian
governments do not yet possess any nuclear weapon nor a nuclear bomb; nevertheless, imagine for a
second of a nuclear–arm Iran, such capability will only do more harm than good. Besides, "Iran is
one of the world's leading state sponsors of terrorism through its financial and operational support
for groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and others" (per ADL.org) It is also fair to point out, a
nuclear–arm Iran will likely to result into a rebalance of power–––that is leaving Iran as the most
powerful country in the region. Additionally, "a nuclear–armed Iran poses a threat to America's
closest allies in the Middle East. Israel is most at risk as Iran's leaders have repeatedly declared that
Israel should be wiped from the map" (per ADL.org).

The Impact On The Middle East
All throughout history from the from the pre–modern period all the way to the contemporary period,
there have been major events both inside and outside of the middle east that have had an impact on
the middle eastern communities. While some were more drastic than others, they all had an impact
one way or another that helped shape the society we know of today. Starting with the pre–modern
period, in 1095, the pope had called for a crusade which was in fact the only successful crusade. In
this situation, the Byzantine emperor called on the christians to help him in which they did so with
lots of vengeance and anger. The Byzantine emperor then commanded them to attack Jerusalem in
which they did in 1099 coming out on top. Fortunately they won and ended up having the Muslim
Army take back Jerusalem resulting in gaining more power than they had previously. Another event
was the Turks entrance beginning in the 9th century. The Turks entered the lands of Islam in 2 ways
such as being bought as guards and coming in as full tribes. Khalifs bought them at first to be
imperial guards know as mamluks due to them being useful for multiple reasons. As a mamluk, they
were very dependent on their owners and had little to no connection with others. Eventually the
mamluks got together and overthrew all the princes that had used them that lead to them taking over.
This lead to the beginning of the Mamluk dynasties in 1250 which was them taking over in a never
ending manner. Another way the

Nothing happens in a vacuum; events and phenomena that take place in one region have effects on
the rest of the world. In no region has this been more relevant than in the Middle East.
Understanding the Middle East as it was and currently is requires an in depth analysis of the events
that have so shaped the region. By peering into the premodern, early–modern, modern, and
contemporary periods, a comprehension of the Middle East and how it is situated within the global
framework will be realized. The premodern period, which ran until 1450, contained two events
fundamental to the history of the Middle East, the Birth of Islam, and the split between Shi'ism and
Sunnism. Monotheism had been gaining global relevance throughout the premodern period, with the
rise of Christianity and Judaism as religious powers. By the time of Muhammad' birth in 570,
various religious traditions had been established by Christianity and Judaism, which would be
adopted into Islam. Because the area in which Islam came to relevance was largely outside of
European and Imperial influence, the religion exploded in the region. The Quran, or word of God,
and the Hadith, or the collections of saying of Muhammad which would be the sources of Islamic
law, became the central tenants of Islam. Further, the tenants of Islam such as Jihad, or fighting in
the name of God, and Hijra, or the migration to Medina, would be contested and interpreted through
the contemporary period. After the death of Muhammad, there

The War Of The Middle East
The war in the Middle East is an Arab–Israeli conflict with a lot of external parties with their own
interests involved. The seed for the war was sown by the British Empire in charge of Palestine in the
early twentieth century, when it promised an independent Arab state that included Palestine to the
Arabs (Shah). In contradiction the British Foreign Minister also promised the same land to the
Israelis through the 'Balfour Declaration' and aid for the establishment of 'a Jewish national home' in
Palestine (Shah). Since, then the United Nations and the United States of America have fueled the
war between these two parties. The involvement of foreign party and their tendency to wage war
against any Arab regime, that disagrees being a mere puppet has created a power vacuum increasing
instability within the Arab nations. This has increased violence and terrorism in the Middle East, the
effects of which is felt throughout the world. The main causes of this war and why it has not yet
been solved can be found by digging deep into the concepts of "Greater Israel", direct involvement
of external forces and "petrodollars".
The main concept behind "Greater Israel" is to expand the territories of Israel and weaken the Arab
forces. After the formation of the United Nations, the UN backed by the US proposed the partition
of Palestine from which the minority Jewish population received the majority of the best lands
(Richman). The majority of Palestinians who are of Arab origin have been

Women In The Middle East
In the Middle East women have always been inferior to men. With the introduction of Islam with the
revelation of the Quran in 610 CE; women are considered equal to men in the eyes of Allah but in
society they remain inferior. This can be attributed to local cultural practices that have been
ingrained into society. As of recent years, there has been a feminist push in the Middle East to gain
more power in society. From the golden age of the Middle East during the Umayyad Caliphate to
present with the many nations in the region today, the women have impacted the social, political,
economical, and culture of Middle Eastern society.
Social and cultural beliefs are the central reason for the harsh discrimination of women in the
Middle East. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the introduction of Islam to the Middle East during the Umayyad Caliphate women were given
more power than in pre–Islamic Arabia. Islam introduced more traditional marriage practices, when
Muhammad only allowed polygamy if the husband could support all of his wives without
favoritism. Lastly, women played a major role in recording and piecing together the Quran ("Islam,
The Arab Empire Of The Umayyads."). With the expansion of the Islam in the Abbasid Caliphate to
parts of Asia with stricter gender roles, many practices during the Umayyad Caliphate were adapted
to limit the power of women. The Abbasid Caliphate is where the stereotypes of mistreating women
in Islamic culture were born with practices such as, keeping women secluded from society and the
reintroduction of female infanticide after it was banned by Muhammad ("The Status of Women in
Islam During the Abbasid Empire." ). During the Abbasid Caliphate women went from having
limited autonomy to nearly becoming slaves that took care of a male's family which was a product
of forbidding them from leaving home without supervision of a male and by taking away the ability
to refuse or consent to marriage. In the Ottoman Empire women were more powerful than anywhere
else in the world according to Lady Mary Wortley–Montague ("TASTE OF THE PAST – Women in
Ottoman Society."). Women often

Bahauddin Foizee :The Middle East, especially the West Asian region, is the most volatile region in
the world. The major reason of such regional instability is the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and
Iran. One of these two rivals, Iran, has been suffering from a weak economy for decades because of
the economic sanctions that are imposed on it by the International community for quite a long now.
However, on 14th July, 2015, a deal was signed between Iran and the UNSC 5 plus 1 (Britain,
China, France, Germany, Russia and the U.S.) on the Iran–nuclear–programme, creating a scope for
the long–drawn economic sanctions to be lifted. The deal requires Iran to limit its nuclear usage; and
in return, years–long sanctions are promised to be lifted from Iran. Why did the US agree to sign the
deal? The US has signed an important deal with Iran; the same Iran on which the US has kept its
sanctions imposed for more than three decades. Why did such sudden change happen in the U.S. 's
'Iran policy '?The US is no other nation state. It 's an ideological state, whose ideology is core
capitalism. A core capitalist state like the US would not step away from its firm stand unless it
benefits from such move in multiple ways and in great quantities. It seems the following factors
have pushed the US to come into the decision of signing the deal with its adversary Iran:Ø The US
cannot be at odds at the same time with too many opponents, which includes Brazil, China, Russia,

Middle East Failure
Middle East; The Home of the Most Successful Failures
The Middle East is infamous for its brutal religion–based society, and it has held this reputation for
well over the past thousand years. Due to its close proximity to the Middle East, Europe has
developed a tendency to attempt to control and force the Middle East into a mold that they
considered civilized and ideal. Although a modern war such as the Soviet War in Afghanistan, at
first glance, seems to have very little in common with the First Crusade, from the circumstances
surrounding the two conflicts, the two sides involved, and the difficulties that the invaders faced the
two wars are surprisingly very akin to each other.
In both cases the invaders were asked for help by the "legitimate" ... Show more content on

According to legend, Peter the Hermit saw Jesus Christ in a dream, telling him to pass on a letter to
the Pope (Oldenbourg 78). Due to the overwhelming power of the Catholic Church at the time the
crusade was strongly supported by all the countries that wanted to hold the title of being defenders
of the faith. It was thanks to their faith that the symbol of the Crusaders became the red cross and
therefore the Crusades are typically described as holy wars. "Thanking God for their victory and
gratefully acknowledging Him as their leader, they [the Crusaders] moved onward through the
burning, devastated countryside, beset with ambushes, in the joyous confidence that their sufferings
were for God and that they were guided and protected by Him. (Oldenbourg

Middle Eastern Borders And The Middle East
Middle Eastern Borders
The part of the Middle East being discussed involves the following: Iraq, Transjordan, Palestine,
Syria and Lebanon. All of which were directly impacted by the borders which were set up by
European countries in the early 20th century. The borders had benefits of course, but they also
brought with them quite a few problems. While the Middle Eastern borders are important to dividing
that part of the world into different countries, the borders seem to have brought with them a lot of
problems that the people living in this part of the world have had to deal with. There are multiple
factors involved with this topic, including a few treaties, the Anglo–Persian Oil Company and the
start of World War I. The different treaties were the Sykes–Picot Agreement and the Balfour
Declaration, both of which involved European countries deciding the future of these countries. All
of these factors had a direct impact on the Middle East and had a lasting effect on the people who
live in this area of the world.
The Sykes–Picot Agreement took place in 1916 involving the British and the French. Each nation
sent a man, for the British it was Mark Sykes, and the French sent Francois Georges–Picot. During
World War I, these men got together and hastily agreed upon a new map with the Middle East
divided up into different countries which the British and French would control. The new map were
drawn with entirely straight lines to divide up the countries (Question Sheet).

The Colonization Of The Middle East
Many of the problems in the Middle East today are a direct result of actions undertaken in the region
's colonial past. I will argue that both imperialist ineptitude, deliberate meddling and outright deceit
by colonial powers have sown seeds of distrust that linger in the Middle East today towards the
West. I will claim that artificial boundaries, government structures and societal schisms created in
colonial times have entrenched animosities and created internal structural instabilities in the area
that are still being resolved. The imposition of Israel into Palestine, I will argue, remains an
unresolved product of colonial rule. I will discuss how the discovery of oil and the regions
importance as a trade route caused the World Powers to remain engaged in the area and oppressive
in their demeanour. Finally I will argue that perhaps the greatest ongoing legacy of colonialism in
the Middle east is an imperialist attitude by the west which continues to this day.
Different regions in the Middle East have different experienced different levels of colonialism. Prior
to the First World War some regions of the Ottoman Empire were already under the influence of
European countries (Owen 2006, p. 23). Between the first and second world wars most of the
empire was formally divided between, and under the control of, Britain and France (Owen 2006, p.
25) and even after the second world war European influence lingered. Cole and Kandiyoti describe
these periods as 'informal imperialism

an example of the security of person that is getting violated is, "We have arrived at the receptions
center for Auschwitz... Behind me an old man fell. Near him was a SS man, putting his revolver

"And soon a terrible word was circulating– selection. We knew what that meant. An SS man would
examine us. Whenever he found a weak one, a musulman as we called them, he would write his
number down: good for the crematory." (Wiesel, p66). Last but not least the head of the block said,
"Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you." For the first time, his voice quivered. "In a few
moments, selection will take place. You will have to undress completely. Then you will go, one by
one, before the SS doctors. I hope you will all pass. But you must try to increase your chances.
Before you go into the next room, try to move your limbs, give yourself some color. Don't walk
slowly, run! Run as if you had the devil at your heels! Don't look at the SS. Run, straight in front of

The Culture Of The Middle East
It is noted that every Middle Eastern Country are publicly fascinated of the Dabke dance. Each of
the Middle Eastern nation claims they are the best at dancing Dabke. They also claim to have to
have invented the dance (Hussein, 2016). However, there is the truth and reality behind the dance.
Dabke is also referred to as Dabka or even Dabkeh. It is those names that the Middle Eastern people
refer to the actual dance that is normally used by different dialect. The dance is universal
irrespective of someone's roots and cultural background. Whether one comes from Iraq, Lebanon, or
even Palestine, the dance is still the same. The term Dabka basically means the act of stomping
(Haugbolle, 2010). The dance found its inception back in the early 1990s before the segmentation of
the Middle East took place. The Middle East was segmented through the colonization process. The
colonies were either the French or the British. The Middle East was a single peaceful land that had a
common Dabke art. The Dabke art was widely used in celebrations, joyful events, at the weddings,
at the graduation, and also in birthdays. Therefore, Dabke was well known to be a tradition that was
shared. Meaning the tradition was not owned by anybody and it originated in the Middle East
intended for everyone to celebrate.
The Dabke dance was a Levantine folk dance. Meaning it found its inception from the Middle East

started with the resources that the Middle East offers. For example, oil is the main reason why
America is committed to the Middle East. " Without oil, the United States Forces would be crippled

Refining these stereotypes as at 1979 could have been challenging due to lack of exposure of the
public compared to this present age where there is knowledge of other sides of the world apart from
sole knowledge of your region of origin. This is made possible by growth in means of globalizing.
For instance, the presence of the social media like twitter raises the awareness of the public to what
is going on in the "other part of the world". It serves as a window to different parts of the world.
Despite this awareness, these stereotypes still exist but the public is not as blind as it was 36 years
ago. It is crucial to acknowledge that there is a difference between stereotyping and from
understanding natural differences in the sexes or cultures.
Generally, stereotypical representations tend to be harmless images but the issue rises from the lack
of apathy from the public to refine theses stereotypes and this attitude comes with a range of
consequences and impacts. Stereotypes are pervasive in the world and have devastating
consequences. An example is people and the media being so quick to confuse Arabs, Muslims and
Middle Easterners as the same.
Stereotyping becomes a problem when it is the basis of categories of how we see others. Holding on

Middle East Challenges
For many centuries, the Middle East has been facing many challenges. It all began in the 17th
century, when the Middle Eastern Empires lost control. The greatest crises the government faced
during the 17th century was the spark of inflation, which was due to many factors, such as an
increase in population, government over spending on military, and buildings, the debasement of
currencies, and most importantly politics. Like then, today majority of challenges that Middle East
is facing is caused by the actions committed by politicians, take Iraq for example. Iraq is built on a
sea of oil, yet we find many people there dying of hunger, or being homeless, but at the same time
we find the politicians and their surroundings, living a luxurious lives;

The Movement Of The Middle East
Some examples of prominent ex–Nazi members who escaped to the middle east are as follows.
Franz Rademacher was a Nazi aide under Secretary of state Luther. Rademacher fled to Spain and
then Damascus, Syria where he worked in foreign trade. Walter Rauff was responsible for the
development of mobile gas vans. Fled to Damascus in 1947, and worked over 47 ex–Nazis to
reorganize Syrian intelligence. A third example is Alois Brunner. Brunner was Eichmann's right
hand man and was responsible for the deportation and death of 100,000 European Jew's. After being
sentenced to death by a French tribunal, Brunner escaped to Egypt, and then on the advice of Al–
Husaini went to Syria, where he worked for Syrian intelligence. Brunner lives to this day in Syria,
under the protection of around the clock Syrian body guards.
The reason that the Arab state protected ex–Nazi war criminals was because of a desire to rebuild
the radical Islamist movement that Al–Husaini and his associates had created prior to the war. These
Nazis became the basis of this radical Arab movement that dominates the Muslim groups of today.
In contrast to Germany, Middle eastern Moderate leaders in opposition to Al–Husaini and the axis

The Modern Middle East
The Middle East is a region of Western Asia and Egypt; some of the countries in this region are
Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq. According to Anderson, Seibert & Wagner (2006), this region
is of vast geo–economic importance and since ancient times, it has been a center of world affairs.
This part matters to almost all superpowers. The geographic factors that contribute to the strategic
importance of the Middle East are; trade routes, oil, terrain or geography, ideology, and faith. The

Dardanelles, according to Anderson & William (2000). The rugged mountains landscape and miles
of deserts from Caucasus to the Himalayas, in the Middle East, provide protection to the Middle
East from any land invasion that would come from the Soviet republic. Military facilities and bases
of the Soviet are closer to the Middle East; this implies that Soviet control of this region is of
strategic importance as it shields the Middle East from the West.
The geostrategic importance of Middle East is also derived from its psychological and political
significance, Pollack (2011). It is a symbolic area serving as the center of the shrines of the three
world's greatest religions, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. The influence of Islam extends from this
region to Morocco and profound inside Africa. Therefore, Middle East has changed foreign policies
of many world states.
In conclusion, the strategic importance of Middle East benefits most if not all nations in the World.
However, the parameters to measure this have to be in a globally extended framework. This means
that any conflict, especially that which may between the West and the East, May ultimately spell the

November 2015 The new borders created after World War 1created long lasting conflicts that
continue to cause strife even today. At the end of WW1 the French and the British sat down to
recreate the borders for the Middle East because they thought the local population would benefit
from European rule. Prior to WW1 the region was based on tribal borders as represented by the
following map.
After WW1 Mark Sykes, representing the British government, and Francois Georges–Picot, from
the French government, agreed upon new borders they had created in 1916; the problem for the
locals were that they were straight ones. At a meeting, Mark Sykes pointed to a map and told the
prime minister: "I should like to draw a line from the "e" in Acre to the last "k" in Kirkuk." And that
was that the countries agreed on an arbitrary line pulled from thin air. The key tenets of the
agreement they had negotiated in relative haste amidst the turmoil of the World War One continue to

An Article On The Middle East
Nowadays whether you are reading an article on a news paper or you are watching the news on
television you will notice that there is a common topic always covered: issues in the Middle East.
This region has an ancient and fascinating history that dates back to archaic times. It has generally
been considered a major centre of international trade and cultural development. However in recent
times this region has been home to different conflicts that have divided the world to the point that
Western countries are now weary and extremely cautious when engaging with this area.
Nevertheless when the Middle East is analasyed in order to explain the current situation there is a
lack of focus on the external factors that have shaped and developed the region to its modern form.
In this essay I am going to give a concise description of the region's demography and territory with
the intent to define the limits of what is interpreted as Middle East.
Successively I will provide a brief summary of the history and evolution of the area from the fall of
the Roman Empire to the second half of the twentieth century, highlighting the fundamental events
and factors that have signed the constitution of the region as we know it.
I am then going to describe the main forms of government that have characterized the generation of
the modern states that are part of the contemporary Middle East.
Finally I will analyse and focus on the external forces and elements that have shaped and continue to

Power In The Middle East
The region that the Western World views as the Middle East is laden with complexities. In the
region there is a long history of what is currently understood as modernization. To parallel that,
connected to the Middle East is also a history of being understood as "backward" or "behind" in
comparison to the West. It seems as if no matter what the empires (now nation–states), and the
people, of the Middle East do they are constantly going to be relinquished to the "other."
Global capitalism made its way into the Ottoman empire through a variety of imperial, colonial, and
personal sentiments. Imperial and colonial attitudes are the most easily recognized. These processes
involve expansion and often domination over other areas, and empires. As ... Show more content on

Post colonization in the Middle East there have been numerous efforts by the West to continue to
assert their control. As is explained in "A Clash of Civilizations" there is an expansion of
specifically American control on global institutions, such as the U.N to push "human rights
imperialism." Huntington write, countering the aforementioned idea, "the West in effect is using
international institutions military power and economic resources to run the world in ways that will
maintain Western pre–dominance, protect Western interests and promote Western political and
economic values" (Huntington, 40). There is a rhetoric used, one that Said comments on, that
maintains an "otherness" of the Middle East. They are labeled "the Orient," a place that is much
greater in size than the West world but that is held in tandem with them. Or, they are held as lesser
than the West. Beyond the direct colonization of the twentieth century, the entrance of the Middle
East into modernity allows judgements to be made on a global

Religion In The Middle East
The Middle East is a region contains countries from Africa and Europe. Some of the countries
included are Turkey, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi
Arabia, and Syria (pg 416). This is a pretty big span of countries with different types of lifestyles,
including religions and food. The main religions in the Middle East are Christianity, Islam, and
Judaism. Each religion is unique in its own sense and has certain foods that are associated with it.
First off, Christianity is a major religion in the Middle East stemming from the Greek Eastern
Orthodox Church. A traditional food that the Christians in the Middle East consume pork. This is
weird because they are the only religion in the Middle East that has no pork prohibition (Kittler, pg
425, 2017). Even with no pork restrictions, they are not just limited to pork. There are other popular
meats in the Middle East, like lamb, sheep, and chicken. They could eat these as substitutes. Another
main religion in the Middle East is Islam, which is what muslims worship. The Middle East has
many fruits and vegetables available. A traditional meal involving eggplants, tomatoes, and onions.
This meal is called imam bayildi. It is a roasted eggplant filled with tomatoes, onions, and garlic, ...

Since people who follow Judaism in the Middle East are not allowed to eat shellfish, they eat the
main meat throughout the Middle East, which is lamb. A traditional dish with lamb is souvlaki or
shawarma. The lamb is sliced into thin slices layered onto a rotisserie with slices of fay, which is
then grilled and carved (Kittler, pg 429, 2017). Having the lamb and pork layered will allow it to
cook as a whole roast. For parties, however, a whole roasted lamb or sheep is traditional for parties,
festivals, and family gatherings (Kittler, pg 429, 2017). The lamb as a whole is a ore formal and

The Middle Eastern culture has many different nationalities within their population including
Arabians, Iranians, Iraqis, Pakistanians, Egyptians, Saudi Arabians, and many more. The most
common religion found in the Middle East is Muslim. However not every Middle Easterner is
Muslim, there are also other religions just as in any country such as Christian and Jewish. There are
more than seven million Muslims living in America and over 1.5 billion worldwide. Many Middle
Eastern Muslims who are conservative with their religion do not eat pork or drink alcohol. Some eat
only Halal meat, which is meat that is slaughtered according to Islamic tradition. Muslims pray five

It is believed that on this night Muhammad first received the revelation of the Holy Quran, and
according to the Quran, this is when God determines the course of the world for the following year.
When the fast ends (the first day of the month of Shawwal) it is celebrated for three days in a
holiday called Id–al–Fitr (the Feast of Fast Breaking). Gifts are exchanged, friends and family
gather to pray in congregation and for large meals. In some cities fairs are held to celebrate the end
of the Fast of Ramadan. The whole point of fasting is to achieve good, and the good that is acquired
through the fast can be destroyed by five things. These five things include the telling of a lie,
slander, denouncing someone behind their back, false oath, and greed.
Muslim women are required to wear long dresses and scarves to cover their body. They also wear
amulets for protection from the evil eye. Muslim people also burn incense to keep the evil eye away
and to keep the evil eye away from the sick.
Health is an important issue in the Muslim community. Muslims believe that the key to good health
is good hygiene and diet. They place a high value in modern Western medicine and have confidence
in the medical profession. Muslim families do not wait long to seek professional help and are
usually anxious to receive medicine as soon as possible. They also listen carefully to what the health

Modernization Of The Middle East
At the start of the 18th century, Middle Eastern countries witnessed their Eastern neighbors being
overtaken by Western Europe and were faced with a choice: to pick apart or to be picked apart. It
was from this dilemma that defensive developmentalism emerged in the Middle East. Empires such
as the Ottomans, Persia, Tunisia, and Egypt began the process of centralizing their authority in order
to assert effective control over their populations. The chief goal of defensive developmentalism for
these empires was to assert their autonomy, whether that be autonomy from the Ottomans in the case
of Egypt and Tunisia, or from outside imperialists in the Ottoman Empire and Persia. In order to
accomplish these goals, defensive developmentalists undertook extensive reforms to establish their
empires as relevant worldwide powers.
Defensive developmentalists adopted extensive reforms in order to accomplish their goal of
asserting their autonomy over outside forces. As the chief worry for these empires was outside
penetration, military restructuring became an essential aspect to their reform. A centralized,
organized military gave empires the ability to do the picking apart, or at the very least prevent from
being picked apart. These modern armies were built on the basis of population, which introduced the
policy of conscription to the Middle East. Coupled with military restructuring was bureaucratic
reform, or a shift from mediated to unmediated states. By centralizing their authority,

Religion In The Middle East
The Middle East is a beautiful region it consists of Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria,
Turkey, and Yemen. There are many things about the Middle East that is so intriguing, but in this
paper I am only going to focus on religion in the Middle East. The Middle East is an extremely
diverse region in so many ways, culture, language, literature, art, etc., but most of all it is diverse
because of its religions. There are hundreds of religions but the three religions that make up the
foundation of religion in the Middle East; Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. The three major
religions in the Middle East are Islam, Christianity, and Judaism; those who worship "Allah", which
is Islam, are referred to as Muslims, those who worship "Jesus", ... Show more content on

Christianity and Islam both grew from the teachings of Judaism, Christianity, most of all, was born
from within the Jewish tradition and community, while Judaism came from the same region, taking
teachings from both Christianity and Judaism. "Christianity was born from within the Jewish
community and tradition. Hundreds of years later, Islam developed in the same region, drawing
from both Christianity and Judaism" (The Holy Land: Birthplace of Three Religious Traditions). The
patriarch Abraham gives a certain importance to all three of the religions, each religion sees
Abraham as something different; the Jews see him as the forefather of the Jewish people, the
importance of Abraham to the Christians is more theological than genealogical, meaning Abraham is
more of a God and religious belief rather than a line of descent traced from an ancestor. "All three
faiths give particular importance to the patriarch Abraham. For Jews, Abraham is not only he who
first expounded the faith, but also the forefather of the Jewish people, through his son by Sarah,
Isaac. For Christians, Abraham's importance is more theological than genealogical" (The Holy Land:
Birthplace of Three Religious Traditions). Muslims see Abraham as a prophet that carries God's
message and is the builder of the Ka'ba, which is the sacred structure that is the geographical center
of Islam on earth and is located in Mecca. "For Muslims, Abraham is both an important prophet
carrying God's message and the builder of the Ka'ba, the sacred structure in Mecca that is the

Stereotypes In The Middle East
Subject: Oppressing Middle Easterners for the Sake of National Security
Introduction
If one were to survey Americans about what they think a terrorist looks like, it is not surprising what
the most common description would be. The majority of people would likely describe a bearded,
turban–clad middle eastern man waving around an AK–47 while shouting, "allahu akbar!" Although
there is nothing inherently frightening about bearded men and practicing religion, somehow being
middle eastern and practicing Islam became one of the dirtiest crimes in the United States. After
9/11 it seems that almost overnight, America developed an irrational phobia of anyone who remotely
looks middle eastern, and has since systematically oppressed and mistreated innocent ... Show more

It is no secret that the thoughts and viewpoints expressed by government officials, especially the
President, plant seeds in the minds of the public which eventually proliferate to influence popular
opinion. Before President Trump was in office, he discussed implementing a "ban on Muslims"
(Kaleem 1). Unfortunately, these statements contained and encouraged negative stereotypes
associated with people of the middle east and Islam, a commonly practiced religion among Arabic
people. Mere weeks after his inauguration, Trump stayed true to his word and followed through with
his plan, signing the order entitled "Executive Order Protecting The Nation From Foreign Terrorist
Entry Into The United States" (Press Secretary 1). Banning citizens from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya,
Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen from traveling to the United States, the order will be in effect for 90
days (Press Secretary 1). Because this ban seemed to portray the message that all people of those
countries were dangerous terrorists, the Trump administration received extreme criticism from the
public and many immigration rights groups because of their decision. Many organizations continue
to voice their outrage, such as the ACLA Immigrants' Rights Project. "The Trump administration has
conceded that its original ban was indefensible." Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU's Immigrants'
Rights Project, said in a statement to the LA Times. "Unfortunately, it has replaced it with a scaled–
back version that shares the same fatal flaws. The only way to actually fix the ban is not to have a
ban" (Kaleem 1). This information suggests that many people believe that this order is perpetrating
racism and encouraging the stereotyping of people of middle eastern descent. This is not the only
order passed by Trump insinuating all Arabic people are dangerous terrorists. On January

The Middle East
One of the most pressing issues in forming a global perspective is the idea of security and threats on
the global stage. The articles Unfinished Mideast Revolts, Living with a Nuclear Iran, and War in
the Fifth Domain, were written and read to further shed light on these topics. These articles help to
depict a better–rounded view of the threats in global studies.
The discussion began with the article Unfinished Mideast Revolts, written by Jonathan Broader.
This article discusses the evolution of the Middle East and how much of the Middle East is currently
coming out of, and in some cases still going through difficult revolutions. The article points to three,
possibly four, defining stages in the Middle East. The first is the stage of the Cold War, the second is
that of the Old Order, the third is the end to the Old Order, and the fourth is the current stage that
they are in now. The point was made that much of the Middle East's resentment to the West
originated from the countries such as the United States intervening in several conflicts during the
collapse of the Old Regime.
Rewinding all the way to the end of the Cold War, one can see that as the rest of the world advanced,
the Middle East staggered behind. On top of their broken education system, their lands didn't have
much to offer besides oil. Therefore, some of the only people to benefit from investments by foreign
investors were corrupt officials and their cronies. These same governmental leaders would show

The Middle East
Having set the benchmark of a modern civilization due to economic and industrial superiority,
Western European powers had contemptuous feelings toward the Ottomans' primitive regimes and
their internal strife. In fact, the 17th and 18th centuries in the Middle East were periods marked by
severe financial crisis, increased decentralization, and stronger external control by western nations.
It was clear that members of Ottoman and Persian military and bureaucratic organizations needed to
prove themselves worthy in comparison to the European nations in order to shift the global balance
of power back towards the East. As a result, drastic political, economic, and social reforms were
implemented in the Middle East throughout the 19th century that aimed to both reverse the process
of fragmentation within the empires and attempt to regain authority on a both local and global scale.
Today, historians often describe this period of transformation as the beginning of the "modern"
history of the Middle East as we are still living the consequences of the changes that took place
during that period. Throughout this essay, I will demonstrate that on the one hand some of the social
reforms that took place in the region helped modernize the educational and cultural affairs of Middle
Eastern societies, while on the other hand, the failed establishment of new economic and political
policies in the empires helped strengthen European control over the region and subsequently set the
stage for the

The Involvement Of The Middle East
Millions of lives have been lost, including innocent civilians, opposing forces, and U.S. troops and
its allies. Trillions of dollars have been spent on the involvement in the Middle East for decades by
the United States government, which orchestrated these results. The burden financially, has been
measured in trillions of dollars, on multiple expenses, all relating to the involvement in the Middle
East. Not only have these events impacted the U.S. financially, but many people have had to pay the
ultimate price, with millions of people dying as a direct result. From the Afghanistan and Iraq wars
alone, 220,000 innocent civilians have been recorded as casualties (Funk). Even with all of the

This event led to the creation of a weapons pipeline between these Arab nations because the U.S.
insisted that the nations use the money they gained from the embargo on U.S. weapons (Jones). The
U.S. received about $22 billion in weapons sales from the Middle Eastern countries in total, which
does not even come close to offsetting the money that was paid, and the money that was made came
at severe costs. The consequences of this include the militarization of the countries that the weapons
were sold and led to an evident rise in tension within the region, specifically between Iraq and Iran.
The trillions that have been accumulated will not only hurt us today but will affect us financially for
years to come. The intervention in the Middle East, also known as the "War on Terror," has led to
hundreds of thousands of deaths. There have been about 350,000 deaths resulting from the Iraq and
Afghanistan wars alone (Home). Those deaths can be broken down into 220,000 civilians, 88,024
opposing forces, 6,802 U.S. military and 6,787 U.S. contractors. Experts estimate that the death
totals may be higher than what has been reported. Millions of people have been displaced by the
wars, with an estimated 6.7 million people being displaced from their homes (Funk). Hundreds of

Nationalism in the Middle East
The concept of "identity" in a person's life often emanates from systemized sense of social
representations and relations. Actors in the identity criterion have a sense of belonging characterized
by a capacity of self–reflection, entailing a process that constantly reaffirms one's status and
differentiation from others. Identity produces consciousness of action and becomes formalized, with
symbolic character and recognition found within specific limitations that are confined in a particular
environment (Montserrat 10). Therefore, an individual's uniqueness directly creates a singular
person's identity, which is an essential element in the development of national identity. It is the
summation of those individuals' identities that leads ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the Middle East nationalism process was delayed in comparison with the European
nationalism because the Arab world possessed unique aspects due to cultural, political and religious
features that were associated with the colonial rule. Due to the aspect of their likeness in terms of
language trait, Arab nationalist in the Middle East had a greater appeal for nationalism, despite the
shifting political alliances.
Despite having identical cultural orientations, the Arab nationalists had consciousness identity
difficulties because they were under the Ottoman Empire for a long time. Arguably, in the first
stages of Arab nationalists movements, European powers had sought to simulate the its development
trends in Arab inhabited territories in order to facilitate dismantling of the Ottoman empire, which
still continued to maintain its influence, even after its disintegration. Conversely, after the fall of
Ottoman Empire, European countries tried to obstruct the promotion of Pan Arabism attempting to
achieve unity, thus hindering them to develop the Pan Arabism nationalist trend (Gerber 263).
However, the tribal and multi–confessional diversity among the Arabs presented a challenge in
achieving the unity goal. Moreover, the Arabs were also divided on religious aspects, thus

Abstract –Customary laws, Islamic laws, imported European laws, and reformed versions of Islamic
laws affect women in" Varying degrees in the different Middle Eastern legal systems. Women legal
status of in the Middle East has been in transition since the early part of the twentieth century, and
the status does not seem to have been settled. The improvement in the status of women has not
resulted from pressures from women's groups as much as from the desire of male members of the
political elite to modernize and industrialize their societies. Thus, using law reform as a tool of
social engineering. It is where political leadership has judged that legal reforms in the status of
women would promote the achievement of full modernization that reforms have been made.
Legal issues involving women's status in the Middle East tend to be quite different from those in the
West. Although there are feminist organizations in Middle Eastern countries, they tend to be small
and to lack significant input into the political process. According to Islamic law women are given
women full legal capacity once they attain puberty. Muslim women, even in medieval times enjoyed
rights that Western women only won much later, such as the right to sue and to be sued, the right to
own and manage property, and to enter into contracts and conduct business.

Even though these laws and cultural Whabbai Islamic practices are taking place, the Yemeni
government likes to portray the women of their country in a different light, stating that their women
were the first ones in the Arabian Peninsula to vote, have members elected to parliament, appoint a

No matter how hard the Yemeni government tries to cover up the treatment of their women, it has

Globalization And The Middle East
Introduction
There are many significant change in the world economy occurred, marked by globalization each
country has different speed of development under different political and cultural background.
During this period, Such as the United States of America 's economic status from the rapid
development to the decline, then move to the current stable trend. Brazil, Russia, India, China,
which named 'BRCIS' those developing countries' economic performances are very catch the
attention in recent years. The decline and rise of these countries ' commercial economy are closely
related to their political culture. Therefore, it attracted the attention of scholars and research circles.
Through reading the case: "Globalization and the Middle East" in John S. Hill's book, International

and religious culture of the Middle East countries, and have had a research for the following
questions also written down my own opinions.
Q1: What are the major contrasts between the political and cultural institutions of the Middle East
and those of the Western world? Which do you think is the most important? Why?

The Religions Of The Middle East
Abrahamic religions, religions that derive from the biblical character Abraham, have three main
religions in the group. The first, and oldest, is Judaism, founded several thousand years ago in the
Middle East; then there is Christianity, the most popular religion in the world, which was founded
shortly after the death of Christ; finally, there is Islam, the second most popular religion in the
world, founded by the prophet Muhammed in the 7th century ACE. Islam has over one billion
followers of the Islamic faith. Although it is one of the most popular religions in the world, many
people do not know much about what Muslims, followers of Islam, believe in. Due to the rising
publicity of militant terrorist groups in the Middle East, Islamophobia has become rampant in many
first–world countries. Although the media portrays violent and barbaric acts performed by militant
Muslims, a majority of Muslims do not commit such atrocities and are wrongly persecuted. Only by
educating those who do not know about Islam, can it be assured that Islamophobia will dwindle.
Islam was founded in Saudi Arabia by a prophet named Muhammed. Muhammed is considered to be
the greatest prophet in the Muslim faith, the second greatest prophet in the Muslim faith is
considered to be Jesus Christ himself. The one main, significant difference between Islam and
Christianity is that Muslims do not see Christ as being the Lord, they believe that only Allah, the
Arabic name for God, is the one, true lord.

was something they did not understand. Its easier to think of the middle east as a contrast to
America.
Think about 50 states sharing boarders and interests with no binding constitution to consolidate
shared interests and govern disputes. This is essentially what you have in the middle east. Iran and
Iraq are mortal enemies as are the Saudi's and Iran, multiply this complexity across the entire region
and you get an appreciation for the difficulties. All the countries make decisions based on their best
interest, decisions will have consequences that are predictable, its the unpredictable that causes the
real pain.
The unintended consequences that change the world forever are easily observed in hindsight. For
WW II to come together the "winners" in WW I had to become even more oppressive against the
Germans causing pain and depression.

women are such inferior people over there because they are no different than any other female in

Hinduism And The Middle East
Since the beginning of time, humans have had a tireless yearning to know a divine being. For most
people, this need has been filled by some type of religion. In order to develop a thorough
understanding of the world's major religions, it is important to look closely at the history, beliefs,
and practices of each. There are five major religions that are practiced in the world today. Hinduism
developed first, then Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and finally Islam. Hinduism and Buddhism
are considered Eastern religions while Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are considered Western.
Both Eastern religions began in India, although Buddhism later moved out. The Western religions
each developed, at different times, in the same general geographical and cultural setting of West
Asia: Judaism and Christianity, in and around the area now known as Israel, in the Middle East;
Islam on the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East. Hinduism is still the foremost religion in India
whereas Buddhism is most common in Southeast Asia and Japan. Judaism is practiced worldwide,
but the greatest majority of Jews reside in Israel, the United States, and the former Soviet Union.
Christianity is the dominant religion in North America, South America, and Russia. Islam is the
most dominant throughout the Middle East, including Southeast Asia and North Africa
(regentsprep.org). Although these religions have sects with differing beliefs, there are certain core
teachings in each. Hindus believe in

Culture Of The Middle East
Introduction I explored the culture of the Middle East because I find it very interesting and different
from my own. I feel as if many people hold a strong negative feeling against people from the Middle
East because of terrorist attacks in the past. Middle Eastern culture is different from American
culture and some people are not culturally aware so they do not understand Middle Eastern culture,
therefore, people judge off of what they know. After visiting and researching the Middle East I have
came to change my views as well as well I am now culturally aware of some Middle Eastern
cultures and traditions. My views have grown more positively since I am more aware of what
Middle Eastern culture consists of and how it is different from my own. More people need to
become more cultural sensitive and aware of different cultures besides their own so they can rid
ignorance of different people. I wanted to look at different parts of Middle Eastern family structure,
social norms, and gender differences in marriages and in society. I wanted to look at how people
outside of Middle Eastern culture view Middle Eastern Americans. I was also interested in the
victimization and passiveness Middle Eastern women and the gender differences between males and
females living in Middle East as well as how feminism can change political views in the Middle
East. I am also interested in looking at the political views and how much of religion influences the

Justice, History and Impact in the Middle East

  • 1. Justice In The Middle East With fearsome, terrifying headlines featured in popular news sites like The Economist, the Middle East seems to be an even more chaotic region of the world. Understandably, when one thinks about the Middle East, one cannot help but imagine the constant chaos and political strife led by corrupt officials and leaders against democracy. This short–sighted and heavily biased perspective of the Middle East may not be entirely incorrect, however it neither does the Middle East justice. The general people do not fully realize the rich political history and circumstances that led to such a diverse history in one of the oldest civilized regions of the world. Middle Eastern history dates back to nearly 2500 BC in Mesopotamia and since then, has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kemal grew up on a farm and was educated in a secular private school, where he would later enlist in a military school and become well recognized amongst his peers and teachers. By 1923, Kemal was called the "hero of Ghazi" and gained a reputation amongst the Islamic world as a war hero against the Japanese in 1905, Western and European imperialism, and triumphs against in an Islamic struggle against the major powers (Howard 91; Hanioglu 129). After the Ottoman Empire had been officially terminated, Kemal emerged as one of the principal leaders of the popular struggle against partition. Kemal had realized that Allied diplomacy was pursuing objectives wholly at odds with those of the burgeoning Turkish nationlist movement" (Hanioglu 92–93). Kemal, with a highly revered position and achievements had easily declared Turkey to be a state governed by a republican form of government in October 29, 1923 (Howard 93). In order to ensure that this new government remains popular with the people, he replaced religion with a new ideology he created a secular nationalistic identity through his new nationalistic system, ... • 3. Middle East Essay In this week's reading, we cover various topic about the history of the Middle–East, and its complexity as it relates to the contemporary crises in which destabilizing the Greater Middle–East. To be frank, I believe there are two majors issues destabilizing the Middle–East: (1) the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) and (2) a future nuclear–arm Islamic Iran. It worthy of noting that the intricacy of the Middle East did not start with ISIS, arguably so, the Middle–East was always a chaotic place. After the rise of ISIS, this organization managed to expand its operation beyond the Middle. The ISIS group became and still is the most dangerous criminal organization. Among many of their criminal activities, they are in part responsible for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later that month, Baghdadi announced the creation of a caliphate, or Islamic state. By then, ISIS had captured large swaths of Syria and Iraq" (Hanna, CNN). As the ISIS organizations keep on expanding their operations in both Iraq and Syria, they become one of the most serious threat to both U.S, the Middle–East, and for the world. With respect to Islamic Iran becoming a future nuclear–armed is a major concern not only for the Middle–East especially for the Unites States and its allies. It is unclear to know exactly of the progress of the Iranian in their nuclear capability ambition. Intelligence suggest that the Iranian governments do not yet possess any nuclear weapon nor a nuclear bomb; nevertheless, imagine for a second of a nuclear–arm Iran, such capability will only do more harm than good. Besides, "Iran is one of the world's leading state sponsors of terrorism through its financial and operational support for groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and others" (per ADL.org) It is also fair to point out, a nuclear–arm Iran will likely to result into a rebalance of power–––that is leaving Iran as the most powerful country in the region. Additionally, "a nuclear–armed Iran poses a threat to America's closest allies in the Middle East. Israel is most at risk as Iran's leaders have repeatedly declared that Israel should be wiped from the map" (per ADL.org). Conclusively, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Impact On The Middle East All throughout history from the from the pre–modern period all the way to the contemporary period, there have been major events both inside and outside of the middle east that have had an impact on the middle eastern communities. While some were more drastic than others, they all had an impact one way or another that helped shape the society we know of today. Starting with the pre–modern period, in 1095, the pope had called for a crusade which was in fact the only successful crusade. In this situation, the Byzantine emperor called on the christians to help him in which they did so with lots of vengeance and anger. The Byzantine emperor then commanded them to attack Jerusalem in which they did in 1099 coming out on top. Fortunately they won and ended up having the Muslim Army take back Jerusalem resulting in gaining more power than they had previously. Another event was the Turks entrance beginning in the 9th century. The Turks entered the lands of Islam in 2 ways such as being bought as guards and coming in as full tribes. Khalifs bought them at first to be imperial guards know as mamluks due to them being useful for multiple reasons. As a mamluk, they were very dependent on their owners and had little to no connection with others. Eventually the mamluks got together and overthrew all the princes that had used them that lead to them taking over. This lead to the beginning of the Mamluk dynasties in 1250 which was them taking over in a never ending manner. Another way the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Middle East Essay Nothing happens in a vacuum; events and phenomena that take place in one region have effects on the rest of the world. In no region has this been more relevant than in the Middle East. Understanding the Middle East as it was and currently is requires an in depth analysis of the events that have so shaped the region. By peering into the premodern, early–modern, modern, and contemporary periods, a comprehension of the Middle East and how it is situated within the global framework will be realized. The premodern period, which ran until 1450, contained two events fundamental to the history of the Middle East, the Birth of Islam, and the split between Shi'ism and Sunnism. Monotheism had been gaining global relevance throughout the premodern period, with the rise of Christianity and Judaism as religious powers. By the time of Muhammad' birth in 570, various religious traditions had been established by Christianity and Judaism, which would be adopted into Islam. Because the area in which Islam came to relevance was largely outside of European and Imperial influence, the religion exploded in the region. The Quran, or word of God, and the Hadith, or the collections of saying of Muhammad which would be the sources of Islamic law, became the central tenants of Islam. Further, the tenants of Islam such as Jihad, or fighting in the name of God, and Hijra, or the migration to Medina, would be contested and interpreted through the contemporary period. After the death of Muhammad, there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The War Of The Middle East The war in the Middle East is an Arab–Israeli conflict with a lot of external parties with their own interests involved. The seed for the war was sown by the British Empire in charge of Palestine in the early twentieth century, when it promised an independent Arab state that included Palestine to the Arabs (Shah). In contradiction the British Foreign Minister also promised the same land to the Israelis through the 'Balfour Declaration' and aid for the establishment of 'a Jewish national home' in Palestine (Shah). Since, then the United Nations and the United States of America have fueled the war between these two parties. The involvement of foreign party and their tendency to wage war against any Arab regime, that disagrees being a mere puppet has created a power vacuum increasing instability within the Arab nations. This has increased violence and terrorism in the Middle East, the effects of which is felt throughout the world. The main causes of this war and why it has not yet been solved can be found by digging deep into the concepts of "Greater Israel", direct involvement of external forces and "petrodollars". The main concept behind "Greater Israel" is to expand the territories of Israel and weaken the Arab forces. After the formation of the United Nations, the UN backed by the US proposed the partition of Palestine from which the minority Jewish population received the majority of the best lands (Richman). The majority of Palestinians who are of Arab origin have been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Women In The Middle East In the Middle East women have always been inferior to men. With the introduction of Islam with the revelation of the Quran in 610 CE; women are considered equal to men in the eyes of Allah but in society they remain inferior. This can be attributed to local cultural practices that have been ingrained into society. As of recent years, there has been a feminist push in the Middle East to gain more power in society. From the golden age of the Middle East during the Umayyad Caliphate to present with the many nations in the region today, the women have impacted the social, political, economical, and culture of Middle Eastern society. Social and cultural beliefs are the central reason for the harsh discrimination of women in the Middle East. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the introduction of Islam to the Middle East during the Umayyad Caliphate women were given more power than in pre–Islamic Arabia. Islam introduced more traditional marriage practices, when Muhammad only allowed polygamy if the husband could support all of his wives without favoritism. Lastly, women played a major role in recording and piecing together the Quran ("Islam, The Arab Empire Of The Umayyads."). With the expansion of the Islam in the Abbasid Caliphate to parts of Asia with stricter gender roles, many practices during the Umayyad Caliphate were adapted to limit the power of women. The Abbasid Caliphate is where the stereotypes of mistreating women in Islamic culture were born with practices such as, keeping women secluded from society and the reintroduction of female infanticide after it was banned by Muhammad ("The Status of Women in Islam During the Abbasid Empire." ). During the Abbasid Caliphate women went from having limited autonomy to nearly becoming slaves that took care of a male's family which was a product of forbidding them from leaving home without supervision of a male and by taking away the ability to refuse or consent to marriage. In the Ottoman Empire women were more powerful than anywhere else in the world according to Lady Mary Wortley–Montague ("TASTE OF THE PAST – Women in Ottoman Society."). Women often ... • 13. The Middle East Bahauddin Foizee :The Middle East, especially the West Asian region, is the most volatile region in the world. The major reason of such regional instability is the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran. One of these two rivals, Iran, has been suffering from a weak economy for decades because of the economic sanctions that are imposed on it by the International community for quite a long now. However, on 14th July, 2015, a deal was signed between Iran and the UNSC 5 plus 1 (Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the U.S.) on the Iran–nuclear–programme, creating a scope for the long–drawn economic sanctions to be lifted. The deal requires Iran to limit its nuclear usage; and in return, years–long sanctions are promised to be lifted from Iran. Why did the US agree to sign the deal? The US has signed an important deal with Iran; the same Iran on which the US has kept its sanctions imposed for more than three decades. Why did such sudden change happen in the U.S. 's 'Iran policy '?The US is no other nation state. It 's an ideological state, whose ideology is core capitalism. A core capitalist state like the US would not step away from its firm stand unless it benefits from such move in multiple ways and in great quantities. It seems the following factors have pushed the US to come into the decision of signing the deal with its adversary Iran:Ø The US cannot be at odds at the same time with too many opponents, which includes Brazil, China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, North ... • 15. Middle East Failure Middle East; The Home of the Most Successful Failures The Middle East is infamous for its brutal religion–based society, and it has held this reputation for well over the past thousand years. Due to its close proximity to the Middle East, Europe has developed a tendency to attempt to control and force the Middle East into a mold that they considered civilized and ideal. Although a modern war such as the Soviet War in Afghanistan, at first glance, seems to have very little in common with the First Crusade, from the circumstances surrounding the two conflicts, the two sides involved, and the difficulties that the invaders faced the two wars are surprisingly very akin to each other. In both cases the invaders were asked for help by the "legitimate" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the overwhelming power of the Catholic Church at the time the crusade was strongly supported by all the countries that wanted to hold the title of being defenders of the faith. It was thanks to their faith that the symbol of the Crusaders became the red cross and therefore the Crusades are typically described as holy wars. • 19. Middle Eastern Borders And The Middle East Middle Eastern Borders The part of the Middle East being discussed involves the following: Iraq, Transjordan, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon. All of which were directly impacted by the borders which were set up by European countries in the early 20th century. The borders had benefits of course, but they also brought with them quite a few problems. While the Middle Eastern borders are important to dividing that part of the world into different countries, the borders seem to have brought with them a lot of problems that the people living in this part of the world have had to deal with. There are multiple factors involved with this topic, including a few treaties, the Anglo–Persian Oil Company and the start of World War I. The different treaties were the Sykes–Picot Agreement and the Balfour Declaration, both of which involved European countries deciding the future of these countries. All of these factors had a direct impact on the Middle East and had a lasting effect on the people who live in this area of the world. The Sykes–Picot Agreement took place in 1916 involving the British and the French. Each nation sent a man, for the British it was Mark Sykes, and the French sent Francois Georges–Picot. During World War I, these men got together and hastily agreed upon a new map with the Middle East divided up into different countries which the British and French would control. The new map were drawn with entirely straight lines to divide up the countries (Question Sheet). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Colonization Of The Middle East Many of the problems in the Middle East today are a direct result of actions undertaken in the region 's colonial past. I will argue that both imperialist ineptitude, deliberate meddling and outright deceit by colonial powers have sown seeds of distrust that linger in the Middle East today towards the West. I will claim that artificial boundaries, government structures and societal schisms created in colonial times have entrenched animosities and created internal structural instabilities in the area that are still being resolved. The imposition of Israel into Palestine, I will argue, remains an unresolved product of colonial rule. I will discuss how the discovery of oil and the regions importance as a trade route caused the World Powers to remain engaged in the area and oppressive in their demeanour. Finally I will argue that perhaps the greatest ongoing legacy of colonialism in the Middle east is an imperialist attitude by the west which continues to this day. Different regions in the Middle East have different experienced different levels of colonialism. Prior to the First World War some regions of the Ottoman Empire were already under the influence of European countries (Owen 2006, p. 23). Between the first and second world wars most of the empire was formally divided between, and under the control of, Britain and France (Owen 2006, p. 25) and even after the second world war European influence lingered. Each of the Middle Eastern nation claims they are the best at dancing Dabke. They also claim to have to have invented the dance (Hussein, 2016). However, there is the truth and reality behind the dance. Dabke is also referred to as Dabka or even Dabkeh. It is those names that the Middle Eastern people refer to the actual dance that is normally used by different dialect. The dance is universal irrespective of someone's roots and cultural background. Whether one comes from Iraq, Lebanon, or even Palestine, the dance is still the same. The term Dabka basically means the act of stomping (Haugbolle, 2010). The dance found its inception back in the early 1990s before the segmentation of the Middle East took place. The Middle East was segmented through the colonization process. The colonies were either the French or the British. The Middle East was a single peaceful land that had a common Dabke art. The Dabke art was widely used in celebrations, joyful events, at the weddings, at the graduation, and also in birthdays. Therefore, Dabke was well known to be a tradition that was shared. For instance, the presence of the social media like twitter raises the awareness of the public to what is going on in the "other part of the world". It serves as a window to different parts of the world. Despite this awareness, these stereotypes still exist but the public is not as blind as it was 36 years ago. It is crucial to acknowledge that there is a difference between stereotyping and from understanding natural differences in the sexes or cultures. Generally, stereotypical representations tend to be harmless images but the issue rises from the lack of apathy from the public to refine theses stereotypes and this attitude comes with a range of consequences and impacts. Stereotypes are pervasive in the world and have devastating consequences. An example is people and the media being so quick to confuse Arabs, Muslims and Middle Easterners as the same. • 33. The Movement Of The Middle East Some examples of prominent ex–Nazi members who escaped to the middle east are as follows. Franz Rademacher was a Nazi aide under Secretary of state Luther. Rademacher fled to Spain and then Damascus, Syria where he worked in foreign trade. Walter Rauff was responsible for the development of mobile gas vans. Fled to Damascus in 1947, and worked over 47 ex–Nazis to reorganize Syrian intelligence. A third example is Alois Brunner. Brunner was Eichmann's right hand man and was responsible for the deportation and death of 100,000 European Jew's. After being sentenced to death by a French tribunal, Brunner escaped to Egypt, and then on the advice of Al– Husaini went to Syria, where he worked for Syrian intelligence. Brunner lives to this day in Syria, under the protection of around the clock Syrian body guards. The reason that the Arab state protected ex–Nazi war criminals was because of a desire to rebuild the radical Islamist movement that Al–Husaini and his associates had created prior to the war. The rugged mountains landscape and miles of deserts from Caucasus to the Himalayas, in the Middle East, provide protection to the Middle East from any land invasion that would come from the Soviet republic. Military facilities and bases of the Soviet are closer to the Middle East; this implies that Soviet control of this region is of strategic importance as it shields the Middle East from the West. The geostrategic importance of Middle East is also derived from its psychological and political significance, Pollack (2011). It is a symbolic area serving as the center of the shrines of the three world's greatest religions, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. The influence of Islam extends from this region to Morocco and profound inside Africa. Therefore, Middle East has changed foreign policies of many world states. November 2015 The new borders created after World War 1created long lasting conflicts that continue to cause strife even today. At the end of WW1 the French and the British sat down to recreate the borders for the Middle East because they thought the local population would benefit from European rule. Prior to WW1 the region was based on tribal borders as represented by the following map. After WW1 Mark Sykes, representing the British government, and Francois Georges–Picot, from the French government, agreed upon new borders they had created in 1916; the problem for the locals were that they were straight ones. At a meeting, Mark Sykes pointed to a map and told the prime minister: "I should like to draw a line from the "e" in Acre to the last "k" in Kirkuk." And that was that the countries agreed on an arbitrary line pulled from thin air. The key tenets of the agreement they had negotiated in relative haste amidst the turmoil of the World War One continue to influence the region to this day. But while Sykes–Picot 's straight lines were proved helpful to Britain and France in the first half of the twentieth century, their impact on the region 's peoples was quite different. The map that the two men drew divided the land that had been under Ottoman rule since the early 16th Century into new countries without any regard to local tribal rulers; and relegated these political ... Nevertheless when the Middle East is analasyed in order to explain the current situation there is a lack of focus on the external factors that have shaped and developed the region to its modern form. In this essay I am going to give a concise description of the region's demography and territory with the intent to define the limits of what is interpreted as Middle East. Successively I will provide a brief summary of the history and evolution of the area from the fall of the Roman Empire to the second half of the twentieth century, highlighting the fundamental events and factors that have signed the constitution of the region as we know it. I am then going to describe the main forms of government that have characterized the generation of the modern states that are part of the contemporary Middle East. • 50. Modernization Of The Middle East At the start of the 18th century, Middle Eastern countries witnessed their Eastern neighbors being overtaken by Western Europe and were faced with a choice: to pick apart or to be picked apart. It was from this dilemma that defensive developmentalism emerged in the Middle East. Empires such as the Ottomans, Persia, Tunisia, and Egypt began the process of centralizing their authority in order to assert effective control over their populations. The chief goal of defensive developmentalism for these empires was to assert their autonomy, whether that be autonomy from the Ottomans in the case of Egypt and Tunisia, or from outside imperialists in the Ottoman Empire and Persia. In order to accomplish these goals, defensive developmentalists undertook extensive reforms to establish their empires as relevant worldwide powers. Defensive developmentalists adopted extensive reforms in order to accomplish their goal of asserting their autonomy over outside forces. As the chief worry for these empires was outside penetration, military restructuring became an essential aspect to their reform. A centralized, organized military gave empires the ability to do the picking apart, or at the very least prevent from being picked apart. These modern armies were built on the basis of population, which introduced the policy of conscription to the Middle East. Before President Trump was in office, he discussed implementing a "ban on Muslims" (Kaleem 1). Unfortunately, these statements contained and encouraged negative stereotypes associated with people of the middle east and Islam, a commonly practiced religion among Arabic people. Mere weeks after his inauguration, Trump stayed true to his word and followed through with his plan, signing the order entitled "Executive Order Protecting The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States" (Press Secretary 1). Banning citizens from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen from traveling to the United States, the order will be in effect for 90 days (Press Secretary 1). These articles help to depict a better–rounded view of the threats in global studies. The discussion began with the article Unfinished Mideast Revolts, written by Jonathan Broader. This article discusses the evolution of the Middle East and how much of the Middle East is currently coming out of, and in some cases still going through difficult revolutions. The article points to three, possibly four, defining stages in the Middle East. The first is the stage of the Cold War, the second is that of the Old Order, the third is the end to the Old Order, and the fourth is the current stage that they are in now. The point was made that much of the Middle East's resentment to the West originated from the countries such as the United States intervening in several conflicts during the collapse of the Old Regime. Rewinding all the way to the end of the Cold War, one can see that as the rest of the world advanced, the Middle East staggered behind. • 58. The Middle East Having set the benchmark of a modern civilization due to economic and industrial superiority, Western European powers had contemptuous feelings toward the Ottomans' primitive regimes and their internal strife. In fact, the 17th and 18th centuries in the Middle East were periods marked by severe financial crisis, increased decentralization, and stronger external control by western nations. It was clear that members of Ottoman and Persian military and bureaucratic organizations needed to prove themselves worthy in comparison to the European nations in order to shift the global balance of power back towards the East. As a result, drastic political, economic, and social reforms were implemented in the Middle East throughout the 19th century that aimed to both reverse the process of fragmentation within the empires and attempt to regain authority on a both local and global scale. Today, historians often describe this period of transformation as the beginning of the "modern" history of the Middle East as we are still living the consequences of the changes that took place during that period. Throughout this essay, I will demonstrate that on the one hand some of the social reforms that took place in the region helped modernize the educational and cultural affairs of Middle Eastern societies, while on the other hand, the failed establishment of new economic and political policies in the empires helped strengthen European control over the region and subsequently set the stage for the ... Despite having identical cultural orientations, the Arab nationalists had consciousness identity difficulties because they were under the Ottoman Empire for a long time. Arguably, in the first stages of Arab nationalists movements, European powers had sought to simulate the its development trends in Arab inhabited territories in order to facilitate dismantling of the Ottoman empire, which still continued to maintain its influence, even after its disintegration. Women legal status of in the Middle East has been in transition since the early part of the twentieth century, and the status does not seem to have been settled. The improvement in the status of women has not resulted from pressures from women's groups as much as from the desire of male members of the political elite to modernize and industrialize their societies. Thus, using law reform as a tool of social engineering. • 66. Women of the Middle East The Women of the Middle East have played substantial roles for their corresponding countries since the advent of colonialism in the region. Middle Eastern women have worked in all types of fields including medicine, education, agriculture, government, private sector, and even defense. They have kept roofs over their family's heads while their husbands were away in wars, or even in foreign countries to work in jobs that they could not find in their own countries. The roles of women in the countries of Yemen and Oman are no exception, but while they still find ways to contribute to their country, they care constantly stereotyped, discriminated, and ridiculed by men who are known and unknown to them. Even though these laws and cultural Whabbai Islamic practices are taking place, the Yemeni government likes to portray the women of their country in a different light, stating that their women were the first ones in the Arabian Peninsula to vote, have members elected to parliament, appoint a woman to Minister of Human Rights, and as an ambassador to Holland (Embassy of Yemen, 2010). No matter how hard the Yemeni government tries to cover up the treatment of their women, it has been proven that Yemeni women are treated as second class citizens and this treatment will not change until the society rids themselves of their stereotypes. Like Yemen, the country of Oman places restrictions on their women, though some Omani laws work in the favor of the Omani women, then for those of the Yemeni's. However restrictive laws towards women are still present. According to Mary–Jane Deeb, the Basic Law prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender, but women may still undergo legal and social discrimination. (Freedom House, 2010). Some legal and social discriminations in Oman include the fact that women must have permission from a male family member to leave the country, women foreign workers can be denied wages and have their passports taken from them, there are no rules against domestic rape and abuse; women also do not have the ... • 70. The Religions Of The Middle East Abrahamic religions, religions that derive from the biblical character Abraham, have three main religions in the group. The first, and oldest, is Judaism, founded several thousand years ago in the Middle East; then there is Christianity, the most popular religion in the world, which was founded shortly after the death of Christ; finally, there is Islam, the second most popular religion in the world, founded by the prophet Muhammed in the 7th century ACE. Islam has over one billion followers of the Islamic faith. Although it is one of the most popular religions in the world, many people do not know much about what Muslims, followers of Islam, believe in. Due to the rising publicity of militant terrorist groups in the Middle East, Islamophobia has become rampant in many first–world countries. Although the media portrays violent and barbaric acts performed by militant Muslims, a majority of Muslims do not commit such atrocities and are wrongly persecuted. Only by educating those who do not know about Islam, can it be assured that Islamophobia will dwindle. Islam was founded in Saudi Arabia by a prophet named Muhammed. Muhammed is considered to be the greatest prophet in the Muslim faith, the second greatest prophet in the Muslim faith is considered to be Jesus Christ himself. The one main, significant difference between Islam and Christianity is that Muslims do not see Christ as being the Lord, they believe that only Allah, the Arabic name for God, is the one, true lord. ... She left and returned home. She understood that the government now fell under strict sacred rule and that questions of any sort would not be tolerated, in fact questions could be interrupted as doubting the will of Allah. She went back to work and continued her routine, except her routine now had the feeling that she was being observed. Her family was savvy and understood that they should not question her on the events of the day. To most westerners, especially America, the Middle East was something they did not understand. Its easier to think of the middle east as a contrast to America. Think about 50 states sharing boarders and interests with no binding constitution to consolidate shared interests and govern disputes. This is essentially what you have in the middle east. Iran and Iraq are mortal enemies as are the Saudi's and Iran, multiply this complexity across the entire region and you get an appreciation for the difficulties. All the countries make decisions based on their best interest, decisions will have consequences that are predictable, its the unpredictable that causes the real pain. The unintended consequences that change the world forever are easily observed in hindsight. For WW II to come together the "winners" in WW I had to become even more oppressive against the Germans causing pain and depression. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are not just another person or treated by the same standards like they are treated here in the United States. There is a lot of controversy and fighting for women's rights throughout the Middle East. They have an extreme lack of power there and they are fighting to change that. It is not right that women are such inferior people over there because they are no different than any other female in this world. Sexism plays a big role in the Middle East and the women are getting sick of putting up with this treatment. This is a big part of what I will be looking into in the research paper: "What kind ... She firmly established the Mamluk dynasty that would ultimately repulse the Mongols, expel the European Crusaders from the Holy Land, and remain the most powerful political force in the Middle East until the coming of the Ottomans (Wise Muslim Women). Some other female political figures over time in the Middle East are the Sultanate of Women in the Ottoman Empire during the seventeenth century was a period when several women had enormous power over affairs of the state (Global Connections). Today there is a small, but growing number of women in the parliaments of Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon (Global Connections). In Morocco women have secured 60 out of 395 seats, which may not sound like much, but that is fifteen percent of Parliament (Basch–Harod). The women's movement campaign's goal was to secure thirty percent of Parliament, but fifteen percent is a respectable start (Basch–Harod). It is encouraging to see that women are making a difference today as well. Although their contributions may not be the greatest, it's great to see they are at least getting their foot in the door. These are just a few political leaders throughout time. This shows that women have the ability to gain power in the Middle East if they are put in the right situation. • 76. Hinduism And The Middle East Since the beginning of time, humans have had a tireless yearning to know a divine being. For most people, this need has been filled by some type of religion. In order to develop a thorough understanding of the world's major religions, it is important to look closely at the history, beliefs, and practices of each. There are five major religions that are practiced in the world today. Hinduism developed first, then Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and finally Islam. Hinduism and Buddhism are considered Eastern religions while Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are considered Western. Both Eastern religions began in India, although Buddhism later moved out. The Western religions each developed, at different times, in the same general geographical and cultural setting of West Asia: Judaism and Christianity, in and around the area now known as Israel, in the Middle East; Islam on the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East. Hinduism is still the foremost religion in India whereas Buddhism is most common in Southeast Asia and Japan. Judaism is practiced worldwide, but the greatest majority of Jews reside in Israel, the United States, and the former Soviet Union. Christianity is the dominant religion in North America, South America, and Russia. Islam is the most dominant throughout the Middle East, including Southeast Asia and North Africa (regentsprep.org). Although these religions have sects with differing beliefs, there are certain core teachings in each. Hindus believe in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Culture Of The Middle East Introduction I explored the culture of the Middle East because I find it very interesting and different from my own. I feel as if many people hold a strong negative feeling against people from the Middle East because of terrorist attacks in the past. Middle Eastern culture is different from American culture and some people are not culturally aware so they do not understand Middle Eastern culture, therefore, people judge off of what they know. After visiting and researching the Middle East I have came to change my views as well as well I am now culturally aware of some Middle Eastern cultures and traditions. My views have grown more positively since I am more aware of what Middle Eastern culture consists of and how it is different from my own. More people need to become more cultural sensitive and aware of different cultures besides their own so they can rid ignorance of different people. I wanted to look at different parts of Middle Eastern family structure, social norms, and gender differences in marriages and in society. I wanted to look at how people outside of Middle Eastern culture view Middle Eastern Americans. I was also interested in the victimization and passiveness Middle Eastern women and the gender differences between males and females living in Middle East as well as how feminism can change political views in the Middle East. I am also interested in looking at the political views and how much of religion influences the Middle East and how it differs from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
