Joydip Jana is a Renewable Energy Researcher & presently working in the field of Grid Integration of Renewable Energy, Smart Microgrid, Storage Systems including Super Capacitor and Vanadium Redox Battery etc. with Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology (IIEST), Shibpur. Currently he is involved in a project “Advanced Research on Thin Film Silicon Solar Cell & PV Systems” funded by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of Govt. of India and implemented by IIEST, Shibpur. The project includes design, development and field testing of MPPT based high efficiency inverters and grid synchronizing system components used in grid interactive roof top PV systems and design, field-testing and performance evaluation of BIPV system in Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, West Bengal, India. He has worked with RRCAT, a centre of Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Govt. of India for setting up a Digital Fast Feedback Control System using FPGA for RF Signals in the particle accelerator installed in RRCAT, Indore. He published several papers in different national & international conferences and journal and wrote a book chapter on “Solar PV Power Generation” in “Advances in Solar Energy Science & Engineering, Vol.1” published by National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Govt. of India. He was involved in a project for set up 100kW Grid-Tied solar power plant at State Bank of India, Sammridhhi Bhavan, Local Head Office, Kolkata for providing consultancy services for preparation of synopsis of tenders (Technical & Commercial), pre-bid design, drawing & BOQ preparation, vendor selection, site visit, site layout, Engineering drawing preparation, system design with PVSyst software, making mechanical, electrical and structural drawing using AutoCAD software, design, selection of SPV modules and BOS, site supervision and commissioning of the project. 2. Identify, select, procure, set up, maintain, and troubleshoot/repair test
equipments/instruments/machines for executing projects.
Develop technical specifications and scope of work documentation, decide power circuit
topology and
architecture, translate system level specifications into working circuits and prototypes,
perform functional testing and debugging.
Lead the hardware design for new products, working in a close interdisciplinary team.
Design schematic and PCB layout, select and specify electrical, analog/digital
electronics and power electronics components, prepare bills-of-material (BOM),
drawings and specifications and build power converters (DC-DC/DC-AC converters),
photovoltaic inverters, converters like flyback converter, forward converter, push-pull
converters, full-bridge converters, half-bridge converters, boost converters, buck
converters, and select semiconductor modules, switching devices like MOSFETs, IGBTs
heatsinks, capacitors, magnetics, analog/digital electronics components and set up basic
mechanical assembly structure.
Develop sensor, gate driver for MOSFET/IGBT, and embedded controller PCB
circuitries for power converters.
Develop and implement real-time embedded firmware for closed loop control of power
converters.
Evaluate various control and modulation strategies used in power converters.
Define test plans to validate power converter designs and investigate critical issues.
Perform analysis of test data and recommend design changes in converter topologies.
Thoroughly document and explain test plans, results and analysis to senior management
and team members.
Verify designs through the use of software simulation tools like MATLAB SIMULINK.
Troubleshoot existing designs and generate creative design improvements.
Design and evaluate innovative topologies and circuitries to meet all requirements for
performance, reliability and cost.
Write technical reports and prepare presentations.
Mentor junior engineers.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES:
Design, development and testing of Grid-tied Single-Phase and Three-Phase solar
inverter at pre-commercial level. The activities include:
Carryout comprehensive literature survey of various circuit topologies, control strategies
of grid-tied single-phase and three-phase solar photovoltaic inverters.
Prepare scheme of the prototype development.
Design DC-DC converters, DC-AC converters, MOSFET/IGBT drivers, snubber circuits,
filters/magnetics, SMPS based power supplies, different sensors, protection circuits etc.
Component selection for prototype development and Bill-of-material preparation.
PCB layout of different power circuit boards, analog electronics circuit boards.
FPGA programming of different Maximum Power Point Tracking Techniques (MPPT),
PWM techniques, phase-locked loop (PLL) techniques, power flow control techniques,
