Application of knowledge only separates the excellence from the
mediocre performances in any field. Let us take it forward. I am

I had always believed in delivering my best professional
contribution without compromise on moral and ethical needs which
are basic pre requisite for enjoying your contribution in the field of
civil engineering. Without wasting much time lets go straight in to
the subject which is awareness of world outside, basic knowledge,
Industry segments and opportunities for a budding engineer. There
is no real life guidance available in the market before you are put
on the job and asked to perform whatever is expected from you.
Mostly professional companies who take pride in their brand believe
in training modules for the new joinee as Trainee which they call
GET /DET.. They rotate the job in regional offices and move to the
sites for exposure.
What I have noticed, though mentors are assigned to them, but in
reality mentors do not invest time for professional development of the
Trainee leaving him to make his own impressions about the
responsibilities and delivery as well as about the organization which is
not encouraging and far from reality. After serving the industry and
working for the best construction companies so far, I had decided to
strive for this platform to guide the students before they leave the
college, how to prepare for the entry into the commercial world which
we cannot avoid after investing our valuable time in gaining the
requisite knowledge. Few of you may opt for Government jobs, few
will opt for design offices, most will opt for office jobs in companies
and rest will opt for real life line of the civil engineering which is
making things happen on ground. This presentation is for all of you
Lets go straight on the subject… The civil engineering works mainly
consists of following segments / sectors:
Construction of all roads, new railway lines, Tunnels, bridges, Flyovers,
viaducts, residential and commercial buildings, Tourism, Hotel and
leisure's, Dams and canals, water, sewerage and Effluent treatment
plants, promenades, parks and Gardens, intake structures, water and
waste water distribution system, industrial sheds, etc. These
components we come across in academics as well as in our day today
life. Civil Engineering structures have independent existence and other
branches of engineering need the support of civil engineering
structures for their applications.. You all are on the verge of getting a
degree in civil engineering and let me tell you with pride, if we are
willing to make application of knowledge and perspire relentlessly and
enjoy your professional career, there is ample opportunity for all of
you.
Here I would like to make a request. Please do not venture in areas
because of the peer’s choice and he being your best friend. Every
individual is different and one must always choose what suits our
personality. Construction companies are divided in following major
segments
A) Infrastructure companies carrying out construction of Dams and
reservoirs or major canals. :- These projects are located in remote
areas.
These dams are either constructed in concrete, Masonry or earthen
one with RCC overflow section and carriageways over them. The
volumes are huge, the mobilization is gigantic like 50 excavators,
200 high capacity conveying equipments like Mann or Hyva Make,
dozers, graders, concrete batching plants, transit mixers, many
water Tankers , high capacity tower cranes, hydraulic cranes,
crushers, mining equipments etc
Most of the works are done mechanically. So the establishment , the
volumes and logistics are huge. There is only construction and satellite
office and accommodation near sites. Engineers who prefer to work at
a place from start to finish can stay for a longer duration with such
projects. These projects provide you knowledge of all available earth
moving equipments available, their productivities, repairs and
maintenances and most important integrating large volumes of
logistics with human interfaces. The breakdowns will cost huge amount
of losses as the activities are interdependent. Planning, Coordination,
data collection, data entry, data analysis, review and corrective
measures are to be done continuously. Material management in large
volumes, arranging funds to run the show and creating pressure on
clients to release the funds in time play an important role here. The
delays accrues huge losses which will run in crores of rupees…
The need for the Good engineers with basic knowledge of
understanding and reading of drawings, Geotechnical investigation and
understanding reports, All surveying techniques with advanced
equipments like total station, auto levels, knowledge of AutoCAD,
computation of quantities through software's like CALQUAN,
knowledge of MSP and MS office, estimation, costing, knowledge and
productivity of machinery deployed, concrete mix design, basic
formwork arrangement and design, concrete technology, bar bending
schedule making, excellent communication skills, Excellent inter
personal skills will be preferred. Engineers with interest in Fluid
mechanics, soil mechanics and theory of structures can be a good
choice.…
B) Companies who work for construction of road works like National
highways, State Highways etc internal roads within cities, Village roads
under PMGSY schemes : These companies work for roadwork's
preferably widening of existing carriageways, strengthening of the
existing crusts from sub grades to finish, conversion from flexible to
rigid pavements, widening of Minor bridges, cross drainage works,
concrete and bituminous works etc… The works run through urban,
semi urban or rural areas having communities near by unlike dam
works… The volumes of handling the earth moving equipments is
substantially less as compared to dams and reservoir works, the
activities follow sequence hence the construction sequence is very
important in road works. Planning of works, priorities Resource
planning, organizing, liason with clients offices, local bodies for
quarrying, requirement of murum for filling, construction water, law
and order issues, play very vital role.
One needs to understand the exact type and duration of the
equipment required to be mobilized to optimize the costs. Sequence
play very dominant role in road works. For example if the cross
drainage works are not taken up first on commencement, the
Excavation and embankment works cannot commence thus delaying
utilization of all activities. The fulfillment of demand of aggregates play
very vital role. Identifying the quarry, location of crusher, batching and
Hot mix plant play an important role.
Communication is very vital tool in road works as the stretches are
run in Kilometers and support for logistics in terms of plant and
machinery, manpower, materials and decision making can happen only
if the need is identified in time, communicated and pursued rigorously.
This is generally a choice for the Engineers
. The central Government as well as statement Government has
prioritized the road network as top most priority. We hear the rural
connectivity through PMGSY or MMGSY as the priority of the
Government in power. The need for the Good engineers with basic
knowledge of AutoCAD, making schedules in MSP, use of total station
and auto levels, MS office software with computation of, quantities,
understanding and reading drawings, Geotechnical investigation,
survey, estimation, costing, knowledge and productivity of machinery
deployed, concrete mix design, basic formwork arrangement and
design, concrete technology, bar bending schedule making, excellent
communication skills, Excellent inter personal skills will be preferred.
Generally these projects run for a duration of 12 months to 36 months
depending up on financial volume and turn over capacity of the
company… Engineers with inclination towards highway Engineering,
concrete technology can make good choices.
C) Major bridges with modern technology :- This is highly specialized
field. Engineers with total commitment to their profession only must
choose this sector. The work involves construction of different type of
foundations from open foundations to well sinking and pile foundations
for abutments.
Geotechnical work plays very vital role in these types of works. The
quantum or volume of each component is comparatively less but needs
very high engineering applications from surveying, soil mechanics,
fluid mechanics, Theory of structures, concrete technology to entire
bridge engineering. They carry major risks to the end users if the
application of engineering is not done properly.. The work is restricted
to a lesser areas Comparatively lesser area and generally done in
broad day lights unless the time lines are very much squeezed due to
losing important connectivity.
The work sequences, formwork design and erection, staging
arrangement and supports at heights, placing of concrete play very
vital roles.
The deployment is generally high capacity cranes, Tower cranes,
standard formworks like Doka Make etc. companies employ foreman's
who are highly experienced but not academically qualified. Young
engineers are asked to work under their guidance to understand the
physical aspects of the work methods and difficulties in implementing
the requirements. I personally learnt a lot from concrete and formwork
foremen's while working for L&T ECCD. I am in debt to them
Engineers with full knowledge of AutoCAD, urge for estimation of
quantities and read complex drawings, formwork design. Ready to
understand work sequences and ready to work at heights are
preferred. They need excellent knowledge of concrete mix design, bar
bending schedule etc.
companies prefer academically good engineers to work with them on
bridge projects as application of knowledge is very essential and one
needs to be thorough in what he is doing or getting it done and
knowing consequences as the outcome of each day process is
irreversible being in concrete. Engineers who aspire high and take
pride for their construction can prefer this sector or segment.
D)Tourism, Hotel, leisure, educational and Commercial projects The
commercial projects have large floor spaces and intent to use for
commercial use like Hotels, malls, offices, shops, art galleries, cinema
theatres, convention centers, academic institutions etc. These projects
are located in cities having the select population to use these facilities
or where floating population is high.
The latest designs are being adopted and construction sequence
requiring the least possible time to repeat the floor to floor
construction is preferred
The companies executing such projects invest in latest trend in market
for high speed formwork and technology for faster cycle completion.
They invest heavily on design and skill level required is very high The
job involves the latest trend in sleek designs, new formwork technology
for fast cycles and least construction time. Flat slabs with and without
column heads are preferred and spans are longer. One needs to deal
with new technologies and there is integration of electrical, mechanical,
instrumentation and IT engineering and hence co ordination for service
corridors and integration of all the engineering aspects during
construction for later use during finishes is must. The engineers are
expected to collate the structural, general arrangement and services
drawings together while execution. A knowledge seeker and urge to
learn only can survive in this industry. The learning curve required is
exceptionally high as every day brings new challenges while executing.

coordinate with various service consultants, civil, Finishes, structural
consultants, softscape and landscape consultants, plumbing and
sanitation consultants, HVAC consultants, Leeds certification for green
buildings, facades consultants etc on every aspect. The skill levels for
all works are exceptionally high and output expected are world class. A
prolific engineer who has inclination in analytical and logical
applications and very sound in communication skills can prefer this
segment. The soft skills required are knowledge of AutoCAD,
interpretation of drawings and detailing, fearless approach to ask the
doubts till cleared, hearing patiently and able to communicate
effectively with working team are prerequisites. The materials like
flooring, bathroom fittings, Doors, joineries,
communicate effectively with working team are prerequisites. The

Fixtures are top class. Knowledge of reading, scaling all the drawings
supplied by Vendor before hand, computation of quantities, material,
excellent knowledge of latest planning tools like primavera or MSP,
excellent skill of preparation of working drawings from basic drawings
in AutoCAD,. Review of activities and persistence to stick for target
deliverables will be pre requisite. Material handling and storage play
very important role. Engineers having inclination to adapt to basic
knowledge of electrical, instrumentation, IT can have this segment as
preferred choice.
Engineers who can visualize, understand drawings in three dimensions
clearly can make a difference. Those who have inclination in designs
can prefer to work with the various consultants for the high end
finishes of commercial buildings
They get exposure to technical knowledge, drawings, integration of
customers expectations with the feasibility of implementation on
ground based on available resources to convert ideas in to reality. The
students with eye on perfection can have this as preferred choice. The
attrition levels in this industry is very high due to tremendous pressure
for delivery of the project in time due to commercial implications. The
interdependent activities are many hence need tremendous patience
and commitment.
E) Companies executing Flyovers and Reinforced earthwork wall panels
These projects as we see are executed in cities to manage the growing
menace of traffic management , They are executed at major junctions
as seen at various places in nearest cities. The work consists of
foundation with Pile foundations, sub structure with piers and pier caps
and super structure with precast Girders and cast in situ deck slabs.
The Girders and precast RE wall panels are casted in parallel timelines
with construction up to sub structures. These are highly skilled jobs
and needs application of concrete technology, Foundation engineering,
Bridge Engineering etc. the soft skills required are knowledge of
AUTOCAD, MSP, MS office, making Bar bending schedules, basic
knowledge of formwork design and execution etc. The compaction
plays a Vital role while carrying out RE wall works using Geo Grid &
Geo synthetics material as reinforcement. POT-PTFE bearings are
generally used for bearings Engineers need to have an eye on the
sequence of works. Extreme commitment for supervision of all works,
meticulous planning is most essential pre-requisite. Engineers with
good Knowledge of application of all aspects of engineering, prompt
and alert, excellent communication skills can prefer this segment as
the work is done in heavily moving traffic . Co ordination with local
administration is a major requirement.
The traffic diversion and management is backbone of construction
apart from engineering requirements. The construction of Flyovers
ease maximum pressure on management of traffic at various busy
junctions. Mumbai would not have sustained the growing traffic
demands if the Flyovers at almost every busy junctions are not in
place. It is very lively work and gives tremendous satisfaction once the
work is completed and traffic is aligned over them.
Metro rails are generally done elevated to ease the traffic congestion.
It works on Mass Transit system concept t reduce growing number of
vehicles on the roads.. The concept of Bridges and Flyovers are used
for the Metro rail works. Station Buildings are constructed at
designated systems per traffic survey and commercial viability. They
also are done in live traffic roads and need sound knowledge of all
aspects of Foundation engineering,
concrete technology, Bridge engineering, Highway engineering etc… All
the requisite qualities mentioned for carrying out major bridges or
Flyovers are required for this segment.
There is growing demand for the construction of Metro rails in all cities
as the widening of carriageways are endless, pollution of air during
growing smoke emission is difficult to control unless we have a mass
transit system in place… students can have a priority for this segment.
All major construction companies are doing these works.
F) Tunnel Engineering :- Tunnels are constructed across all highways ,
railways and for hydroelectric projects to cross a major hills/
Mountains. It is highly specialized works and companies invest in
Tunnel boring machines for large profiles having openings for more
than two lanes.
For Hydroelectric projects HRT or TRT are constructed conventionally
depending up on size of the opening expected as TBM cannot be run
through steep terrains.
A sound knowledge of Geology, soil mechanics and surveying is most
essential requirement beside knowledge of work sequencing, planning,
co ordination and inter personal skills. It is a high risk work and needs
prompt action and application of knowledge… The work deals with
Continuous survey for accuracy wit tunnel profiler for under cuts,
keeping the structural steel members ready for lining, pre cast
laggings, as well as the rock anchoring bolts and plates etc. Dual air
draft systems are implemented for maintaining oxygen levels in tunnels
are major activities. It is a round the clock work and needs vigil and
prompt action.
The risk level is exceptionally very high. Vigilant Engineers with
tremendous self confidence, alertness can prefer this job. The demerit
is you cannot switchover to any other segment of civil engineering if
you prefer specialize for tunneling works. Tunnel works are generally
in remote areas away from the cities or villages. The camps are near by
sites. Communication is very vital requirement.
G) Railways and Airport engineering :- Construction of new railway
lines or extension of the number of lines. They cover from earthwork in
embankment, cutting, Major bridges, tunnels, viaducts, RUB and
ROB’s, minor bridges etc to station buildings, quarters and platforms.
Usually new projects are away from development in remote areas and
are major source of prosperity of the region.
The commitment of delivery is exceptionally high, one needs to have
knowledge of all aspects of civil engineering works.
A passionate and dedicated engineer can prefer this segment.
Knowledge of surveying, Geotechnical Investigation, computation of
quantities through Calquan, making of base line schedules in MSP and
reviewing, understanding and reading drawings, knowledge of AUTOCAD,
Basic knowledge of Transportation Engineering, concrete Technology,
basic design of structures, integration of basic knowledge of mechanical,
instrumentation and electrical engineering are preferred. Logistics play
very Vital role in these works as they are also spread in large stretches
like road works. Co ordination and communications are Vital tools. They
cover almost all segments of civil engineering works from road
diversions, bridges, tunnels, aqueducts, slab culverts and arch bridges
etc.
I had cherished this segment during my earlier days with KR. Railway
and Air port engineering needs technical sound skills and very high
commitments as they move large numbers of commuters at a time and
the accident due to poor workmanship or negligence will amount to
heavy number of fatality. The dedication and commitment must be
highest. We have heard the failures of tarmacs of air strips and failures
of structures on running railway lines in the past. Our commitment being
civil engineers in society is highest as prosperity of the nation lies with
faster growth in infrastructure segment like roads, railways and airports.
These are high priority segments for all governments in state as well as
at centre.
A passionate engineer can bring laurels to the nation by creating world
class facilities.
H) Residential apartments :- The housing has been the most exploited
segment for consumers. The price of land, competition, pricing of the
Flats, material price variations and political interference has been most
impacting factors. The Government has set a regulation in this
industry to tie down the owners for price control and timely handing
over. One can see the change in attitude of the industry stake holders
now. The rural migration is continuous process and hence the cities
resources like roads, water supply, power and housing are getting
strained and as a result there is opportunity for growth in these
segments. Housing is substantially a private sector segment and top
companies like Tata’s, Godrej, L&T contributing in these segments
along with other small and large scale private players.
The builders and companies Keep an eye on growing trend of the
markets, businesses, educational institutions and expending capacities
of the individuals to decide the location of the plot to be taken and
sizes and type of the apartments to be constructed to suit the
affordability of the consumers.
This segment needs services of Civil and structural consultants,
architects, cement steel ,sand Vendors as well as the contractors or
skilled workmen to carry out the design on the ground, it also needs
liason with local bodies to seek permissions before carrying out the
building lay outs. This segment accommodates highly skilled to
unskilled workmen from unskilled males and female coolies , masons,
carpenters, fitters, plumbers, tillers, painters to foreman, supervisors,
engineers and project managers.
The requirement range for reinforcement steel, cement, sand plywood,
wooden Ballies, supporting arrangements, nails, binding wires, Doors,
Aluminum or steel windows, Tiles for floor and dado works, interior
decorators, painters, kitchen cabinets, sanitary and bath fittings. The
small scale industry is totally dependent on movement of this
segment…
The skill level required is understanding GA, Architectural and
structural drawings, full knowledge of AutoCAD, computation of
Quantities, co-ordination with various trade workers, work sequencing,
knowledge of the basic planning tools like MSP, MS office tools,
communication is vital tool. Productivity of various resources and rate
analysis play very vital role in this segment.
Negotiation skills, clear concept of minimum inventory levels of
materials is necessity. One needs to interact with the potential
consumers hence empathy is highly essential. Daily monitoring and
corrective actions, proper use and repetition of the form works and
committed cycle times from floor to floor makes life easier. Most of the
engineers prefer this segment as they can operate from city or towns..
Considering this perspective there is tremendous exploitation amongst
builders in this segment..
I) Intake structures, Water and waste water treatment plant, storage
reservoirs, rising mains, distribution systems etc
Water supply and sewerage systems are lifelines of all cities towns and
Villages. The cities are growing rapidly due to rural migrations, floating
populations thus compelling the local bodies to meet the expectations
of water requirement and sewage rage disposal and treatment.
The intake structure for lifting raw water, treatment plants for
converting to potable water, storage reservoirs , conveyance system
from plant to storage reservoirs and then to end user need to be
constantly added up to meet demand. Similar the sewerage or water
disposal up to the STP need to meet the growing needs. These aspects
must have been covered in your academics in environmental
engineering subject.. These are basic needs for human survival and
protection from epidemics. The intake structures are generally RCC
wells in Rivers, reservoirs, minor irrigation tanks etc. They house the
pumping station above them and the raw water is drawn and pumped
to water treatment plant. The treatment plants convert the raw water
to treated water through defined processes. The treated water is
stored in MBR and pumped to high elevation ESR or GSR’s to supply to
the end users on higher elevations than the MBR supply levels
The distribution system is run though the storage tanks through the
streets for tapping the connections Similarly sewerage system is run
though the streets with manholes to collection sumps and then to
sewerage treatment plant through gravity or rising mains. The
sewerage is treated as per laid down stringent guidelines and treated
effluent is discharged as per pollution control boards Guidelines… local
bodies cannot adopt to rapidly growing cities due to technological
growth or rural migration.
The capital investment is huge and it affects the road network also…
Hence having correct population data is necessary to design the
infrastructural needs to meet demands. Few Villages are added to
cities these decisions also effect the environmental engineering works
very badly and we have seen the effects of rivers getting polluted due
to untreated sewage as the capacities of the plants cannot handle
the abrupt increase in the sewerage flow. Addition of new hotels or
commercial spaces increase the pressure on management of the
demands. Currently all cities in Maharashtra are experiencing
tremendous pressure for investment on water and waste water
managements of the city.
A political decision for growth integration like addition of Hotels,
Airports, IT hubs, new industries, convention centers must have a
robust plan for infrastructure development funding and implementation
by local administration. Lack of co-ordination between the state
Government and local bodies adversely effect quality of delivery. The
requisite to serve this, segment needs excellent knowledge of Fluid
mechanics, complete knowledge of aspects and impacts of
environmental engineering, governing laws of the pollution control
boards, urge to seek logistical data from the Government departments,
knowledge of concrete technology, eye on detailing and excellent
command on surveying, liason with locals, co ordination, planning of
works and monitoring, safety aspects while working along live road
works, Basic knowledge of pumping machinery, electrical panels, SCADA
system are essential.
These works need tremendous patience till commissioning. Engineers
with cool heads, dedication and belief in team working can survive in
this segment.
J) Project Management consultants :- This segments employs
intellectuals from the respective fields of engineering who command the
codes, can adapt to latest trends in respective segments and provide
expertise services to government departments, companies etc. They
can provide assistance from surveying to providing the implementable
drawings with complete detailing.
For example Government decides to convert state highway to national
highway. These companies can render engineering services from
studying the aspect and impacts on habitats, existing road geometry,
Farming beside roads, acquisition expected to implement the decision,
surveying and soil exploration, making tender drawings and detailing,
creating technical specifications complying with prevailing IS codes and
contract act with amendments as on date. current traffic data and
increase in traffic, optimization of time and costs for moment of goods
etc Rate analysis and commercial viability of projects. They can provide
engineering inputs for implementation of the project proposals and can
provide technical support for supervision after award of works also if
demanded…
These are specialized services as consultants for various segments
mentioned earlier. There are consultants providing specialized services
in some segments and there are large conglomerates who provide
services in all segments like TATA consulting Engineers, Consulting
Engineering Services etc, Engineers who are sound in application of
knowledge and who prefer to contribute on intellectual side of the
career can chose to work with them. They need to have knowledge of
all software's available for quantification, creation of drawings, creation
of schedules, up to date knowledge of IS codes and technical
specifications governing single activity.
They need to be up to date in technological advancement and should
contribute for optimization of the costs. Being a specialized field the
choices for change over on later dates are limited to switching over to
similar segment as each segment needs high specialization. They prefer
post graduates in engineering in respective core areas.
K) Working in head offices or regional offices of companies :-
Companies require engineers for creating work plans, monitoring of
works, creating Management information system for administrative,
technical and strategic decisions, quantity surveying, rate analysis for
tendering purpose, contract and sub contract administration, controlling
rates and minimum stock levels and implementation of procurement
strategy, providing logistic and technical support to projects with
agencies, materials, creation of clients bills, reconciliation of all
materials, enforcing the objectives of the organization, keeping eye on
competitors working strategy, advancement in technology and study of
costs saving measures to switch over to new technology.
Engineers with excellent analytical skills, reasoning skills,
communication skills, good command in oral and written
communication, adaptation to change and high learning curve, having
tremendous patience and working without prejudice can make a good
choice. Companies prefer Girls / Women over Boys / men for these
choices considering their commitment, integrity and loyalty to
organization apart from above technical requirements. We have come
across all the aspects of the opportunities with different flavors available
to you. Right choices will not waste your precious years from
switchover's as they end up in poor growth profile as companies do not
prefer the candidates who switchover jobs frequently…
I recommend you not to make haste and try to learn AutoCAD, MSP or
primavera, analysis of rates, knowledge of Major equipments used in all
construction segments, productivity of the equipments before entering
the brand new world of Service to civil engineering industry….. Few
prefer to enter the Government segments by trying for class I services
or written tests for JE, AEE, AE etc. my suggestion to them shall be ,
please make your base strong in core areas like foundation engineering
surveying, concrete technology, design of RCC frames structures,
Design of steel structures, Fluid mechanics, Environmental engineering,
basic design of dams, carriageways, analysis of rates etc… Once you
are selected, you need to validate the proposals being at junior levels of
consultants who have tremendous knowledge of all engineering aspects
as well as codes, best construction practices… you need to decide what
is in the interest of the government by providing your inputs. else life
will end up in compromises and frustration. You will not have
satisfaction of services rendered. You have greater responsibility being a
servant of the Government and having assigned the task to utilize
public funds in the larger interest of the society by providing the
optimized and durable product. We have examples of exemplary
engineers who discharge their duties will due diligence. You can be one
of the bright engineers of the nation.
Indian Engineering services Exams for central government engineering
are most sought amongst the bright students. IRSE, MES, CPWD are the
departments students are given posting… These are highly responsible
posts and given larger command areas to deliver. Unless you are very
good in possession of knowledge and know latest trends in technology
advancements, you will not be able to make justice with the given
assignments. I was fortunate to work with IRSE Dy chief Engineer and
Chief Engineers while working with KR. They had excellent command on
all civil engineering subjects and I was groomed properly in all areas
and could discharge my responsibility very sensibly. Today it gives me
sense of pride to be part of KR creation team. Most important aspect is
understanding our Moral and Ethical responsibility and to be a good
human being. Being Engineers you will come across many situations
which compel you to compromise on your Moral and Ethical education
these educational institutions had offered you write from your school
apart from the parents support.
We have very recent stories of bridge collapse over Savitri river and
losing the life's of the commuters for no fault of them just because
engineering team had failed to do the structural audit and provide
inputs to administration and raising the alarm. We have equally heard
that the new bridge at same location was done in less than three
months duration and opened to traffic before monsoon The recently
constructed roads in Mumbai are getting potholes and investigation is
being done. We hear the dams taken up during earlier government
regime made the situation grim in Maharashtra leading to famine
situation and cost over runs of the projects have reached to such levels
where government is not able to fund these projects for completion.
Government of Maharashtra had prioritized the works to complete at
least those projects which are in advanced stages of completion thus
making investment useful to avoid cost over runs. The famine
situations have taken toll of lifes of many of our farmers in India
Engineers play a vital role in advising the administration the cause and
effects of every decision. Hence technocrats play very vital role in
nation building. We must do our duty with due diligence. Moral and
ethical education can differentiate between wisdom and greed. One
needs to evaluate the effects of the decision or action initiated on a
larger scale. Challenges will be many but the brave need to keep high
self esteem and nation at large before sacrificing for the smaller gains.
These responsibilities will come when you hold such high offices. We
need excellent technocrats which our nation must feel proud. I had
opportunity to work with Mr. E. Shreedharan, CMD of KR as well as the
Delhi Metro. An IRSE, a person with highest integrity, Always insisted
for ethical and moral responsibility from high offices. Choice we make is
the destiny we create for ourselves….

  • 1. Let us First salute all the Gentlemen from your academic institutions who have shaped you and transformed you in to wonderful engineers ready to face the world. Application of knowledge only separates the excellence from the mediocre performances in any field. Let us take it forward. I am sure you will stick to presentation till the end . It is a promise……….

I had always believed in delivering my best professional contribution without compromise on moral and ethical needs which are basic pre requisite for enjoying your contribution in the field of civil engineering. Without wasting much time lets go straight in to the subject which is awareness of world outside, basic knowledge, Industry segments and opportunities for a budding engineer. There is no real life guidance available in the market before you are put on the job and asked to perform whatever is expected from you. Mostly professional companies who take pride in their brand believe in training modules for the new joinee as Trainee which they call GET /DET.. They rotate the job in regional offices and move to the sites for exposure.

What I have noticed, though mentors are assigned to them, but in reality mentors do not invest time for professional development of the Trainee leaving him to make his own impressions about the responsibilities and delivery as well as about the organization which is not encouraging and far from reality. After serving the industry and working for the best construction companies so far, I had decided to strive for this platform to guide the students before they leave the college, how to prepare for the entry into the commercial world which we cannot avoid after investing our valuable time in gaining the requisite knowledge. Few of you may opt for Government jobs, few will opt for design offices, most will opt for office jobs in companies and rest will opt for real life line of the civil engineering which is making things happen on ground. This presentation is for all of you

Lets go straight on the subject… The civil engineering works mainly consists of following segments / sectors: Construction of all roads, new railway lines, Tunnels, bridges, Flyovers, viaducts, residential and commercial buildings, Tourism, Hotel and leisure's, Dams and canals, water, sewerage and Effluent treatment plants, promenades, parks and Gardens, intake structures, water and waste water distribution system, industrial sheds, etc. These components we come across in academics as well as in our day today life. Civil Engineering structures have independent existence and other branches of engineering need the support of civil engineering structures for their applications.. You all are on the verge of getting a degree in civil engineering and let me tell you with pride, if we are willing to make application of knowledge and perspire relentlessly and enjoy your professional career, there is ample opportunity for all of you.
  • 5. Here I would like to make a request. Please do not venture in areas because of the peer’s choice and he being your best friend. Every individual is different and one must always choose what suits our personality. Construction companies are divided in following major segments A) Infrastructure companies carrying out construction of Dams and reservoirs or major canals. :- These projects are located in remote areas. These dams are either constructed in concrete, Masonry or earthen one with RCC overflow section and carriageways over them. The volumes are huge, the mobilization is gigantic like 50 excavators, 200 high capacity conveying equipments like Mann or Hyva Make, dozers, graders, concrete batching plants, transit mixers, many water Tankers , high capacity tower cranes, hydraulic cranes, crushers, mining equipments etc
  • 6. Most of the works are done mechanically. So the establishment , the volumes and logistics are huge. There is only construction and satellite office and accommodation near sites. Engineers who prefer to work at a place from start to finish can stay for a longer duration with such projects. These projects provide you knowledge of all available earth moving equipments available, their productivities, repairs and maintenances and most important integrating large volumes of logistics with human interfaces. The breakdowns will cost huge amount of losses as the activities are interdependent. Planning, Coordination, data collection, data entry, data analysis, review and corrective measures are to be done continuously. Material management in large volumes, arranging funds to run the show and creating pressure on clients to release the funds in time play an important role here. The delays accrues huge losses which will run in crores of rupees…

The need for the Good engineers with basic knowledge of understanding and reading of drawings, Geotechnical investigation and understanding reports, All surveying techniques with advanced equipments like total station, auto levels, knowledge of AutoCAD, computation of quantities through software's like CALQUAN, knowledge of MSP and MS office, estimation, costing, knowledge and productivity of machinery deployed, concrete mix design, basic formwork arrangement and design, concrete technology, bar bending schedule making, excellent communication skills, Excellent inter personal skills will be preferred. Engineers with interest in Fluid mechanics, soil mechanics and theory of structures can be a good choice.…

B) Companies who work for construction of road works like National highways, State Highways etc internal roads within cities, Village roads under PMGSY schemes : These companies work for roadwork's preferably widening of existing carriageways, strengthening of the existing crusts from sub grades to finish, conversion from flexible to rigid pavements, widening of Minor bridges, cross drainage works, concrete and bituminous works etc… The works run through urban, semi urban or rural areas having communities near by unlike dam works… The volumes of handling the earth moving equipments is substantially less as compared to dams and reservoir works, the activities follow sequence hence the construction sequence is very important in road works. Planning of works, priorities Resource planning, organizing, liason with clients offices, local bodies for quarrying, requirement of murum for filling, construction water, law and order issues, play very vital role.
  • 9. One needs to understand the exact type and duration of the equipment required to be mobilized to optimize the costs. Sequence play very dominant role in road works. For example if the cross drainage works are not taken up first on commencement, the Excavation and embankment works cannot commence thus delaying utilization of all activities. The fulfillment of demand of aggregates play very vital role. Identifying the quarry, location of crusher, batching and Hot mix plant play an important role. Communication is very vital tool in road works as the stretches are run in Kilometers and support for logistics in terms of plant and machinery, manpower, materials and decision making can happen only if the need is identified in time, communicated and pursued rigorously. This is generally a choice for the Engineers
  • 10. . The central Government as well as statement Government has prioritized the road network as top most priority. We hear the rural connectivity through PMGSY or MMGSY as the priority of the Government in power. The need for the Good engineers with basic knowledge of AutoCAD, making schedules in MSP, use of total station and auto levels, MS office software with computation of, quantities, understanding and reading drawings, Geotechnical investigation, survey, estimation, costing, knowledge and productivity of machinery deployed, concrete mix design, basic formwork arrangement and design, concrete technology, bar bending schedule making, excellent communication skills, Excellent inter personal skills will be preferred. Generally these projects run for a duration of 12 months to 36 months depending up on financial volume and turn over capacity of the company… Engineers with inclination towards highway Engineering, concrete technology can make good choices.
  • 11. C) Major bridges with modern technology :- This is highly specialized field. Engineers with total commitment to their profession only must choose this sector. The work involves construction of different type of foundations from open foundations to well sinking and pile foundations for abutments. Geotechnical work plays very vital role in these types of works. The quantum or volume of each component is comparatively less but needs very high engineering applications from surveying, soil mechanics, fluid mechanics, Theory of structures, concrete technology to entire bridge engineering. They carry major risks to the end users if the application of engineering is not done properly.. The work is restricted to a lesser areas Comparatively lesser area and generally done in broad day lights unless the time lines are very much squeezed due to losing important connectivity.
  • 12. The work sequences, formwork design and erection, staging arrangement and supports at heights, placing of concrete play very vital roles. The deployment is generally high capacity cranes, Tower cranes, standard formworks like Doka Make etc. companies employ foreman's who are highly experienced but not academically qualified. Young engineers are asked to work under their guidance to understand the physical aspects of the work methods and difficulties in implementing the requirements. I personally learnt a lot from concrete and formwork foremen's while working for L&T ECCD. I am in debt to them Engineers with full knowledge of AutoCAD, urge for estimation of quantities and read complex drawings, formwork design. Ready to understand work sequences and ready to work at heights are preferred. They need excellent knowledge of concrete mix design, bar bending schedule etc.
  • 13. companies prefer academically good engineers to work with them on bridge projects as application of knowledge is very essential and one needs to be thorough in what he is doing or getting it done and knowing consequences as the outcome of each day process is irreversible being in concrete. Engineers who aspire high and take pride for their construction can prefer this sector or segment. D)Tourism, Hotel, leisure, educational and Commercial projects The commercial projects have large floor spaces and intent to use for commercial use like Hotels, malls, offices, shops, art galleries, cinema theatres, convention centers, academic institutions etc. These projects are located in cities having the select population to use these facilities or where floating population is high. The latest designs are being adopted and construction sequence requiring the least possible time to repeat the floor to floor construction is preferred
  • 14. The companies executing such projects invest in latest trend in market for high speed formwork and technology for faster cycle completion. They invest heavily on design and skill level required is very high The job involves the latest trend in sleek designs, new formwork technology for fast cycles and least construction time. Flat slabs with and without column heads are preferred and spans are longer. One needs to deal with new technologies and there is integration of electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and IT engineering and hence co ordination for service corridors and integration of all the engineering aspects during construction for later use during finishes is must. The engineers are expected to collate the structural, general arrangement and services drawings together while execution. A knowledge seeker and urge to learn only can survive in this industry. The learning curve required is exceptionally high as every day brings new challenges while executing.

One needs to coordinate with various service consultants, civil, Finishes, structural consultants, softscape and landscape consultants, plumbing and sanitation consultants, HVAC consultants, Leeds certification for green buildings, facades consultants etc on every aspect. The skill levels for all works are exceptionally high and output expected are world class. A prolific engineer who has inclination in analytical and logical applications and very sound in communication skills can prefer this segment. The soft skills required are knowledge of AutoCAD, interpretation of drawings and detailing, fearless approach to ask the doubts till cleared, hearing patiently and able to communicate effectively with working team are prerequisites. The materials like flooring, bathroom fittings, Doors, joineries,

Knowledge of reading, scaling all the drawings supplied by Vendor before hand, computation of quantities, material, excellent knowledge of latest planning tools like primavera or MSP, excellent skill of preparation of working drawings from basic drawings in AutoCAD,. Review of activities and persistence to stick for target deliverables will be pre requisite. Material handling and storage play very important role. Engineers having inclination to adapt to basic knowledge of electrical, instrumentation, IT can have this segment as preferred choice. Engineers who can visualize, understand drawings in three dimensions clearly can make a difference. Those who have inclination in designs can prefer to work with the various consultants for the high end finishes of commercial buildings

They get exposure to technical knowledge, drawings, integration of customers expectations with the feasibility of implementation on ground based on available resources to convert ideas in to reality. The students with eye on perfection can have this as preferred choice. The attrition levels in this industry is very high due to tremendous pressure for delivery of the project in time due to commercial implications. The interdependent activities are many hence need tremendous patience and commitment. E) Companies executing Flyovers and Reinforced earthwork wall panels These projects as we see are executed in cities to manage the growing menace of traffic management , They are executed at major junctions as seen at various places in nearest cities. The work consists of foundation with Pile foundations, sub structure with piers and pier caps and super structure with precast Girders and cast in situ deck slabs.
  • 18. The Girders and precast RE wall panels are casted in parallel timelines with construction up to sub structures. These are highly skilled jobs and needs application of concrete technology, Foundation engineering, Bridge Engineering etc. the soft skills required are knowledge of AUTOCAD, MSP, MS office, making Bar bending schedules, basic knowledge of formwork design and execution etc. The compaction plays a Vital role while carrying out RE wall works using Geo Grid & Geo synthetics material as reinforcement. POT-PTFE bearings are generally used for bearings Engineers need to have an eye on the sequence of works. Extreme commitment for supervision of all works, meticulous planning is most essential pre-requisite. Engineers with good Knowledge of application of all aspects of engineering, prompt and alert, excellent communication skills can prefer this segment as the work is done in heavily moving traffic . Co ordination with local administration is a major requirement.
  • 19. The traffic diversion and management is backbone of construction apart from engineering requirements. The construction of Flyovers ease maximum pressure on management of traffic at various busy junctions. Mumbai would not have sustained the growing traffic demands if the Flyovers at almost every busy junctions are not in place. It is very lively work and gives tremendous satisfaction once the work is completed and traffic is aligned over them. Metro rails are generally done elevated to ease the traffic congestion. It works on Mass Transit system concept t reduce growing number of vehicles on the roads.. The concept of Bridges and Flyovers are used for the Metro rail works. Station Buildings are constructed at designated systems per traffic survey and commercial viability. They also are done in live traffic roads and need sound knowledge of all aspects of Foundation engineering,
  • 20. concrete technology, Bridge engineering, Highway engineering etc… All the requisite qualities mentioned for carrying out major bridges or Flyovers are required for this segment. There is growing demand for the construction of Metro rails in all cities as the widening of carriageways are endless, pollution of air during growing smoke emission is difficult to control unless we have a mass transit system in place… students can have a priority for this segment. All major construction companies are doing these works. F) Tunnel Engineering :- Tunnels are constructed across all highways , railways and for hydroelectric projects to cross a major hills/ Mountains. It is highly specialized works and companies invest in Tunnel boring machines for large profiles having openings for more than two lanes.
  • 21. For Hydroelectric projects HRT or TRT are constructed conventionally depending up on size of the opening expected as TBM cannot be run through steep terrains. A sound knowledge of Geology, soil mechanics and surveying is most essential requirement beside knowledge of work sequencing, planning, co ordination and inter personal skills. It is a high risk work and needs prompt action and application of knowledge… The work deals with Continuous survey for accuracy wit tunnel profiler for under cuts, keeping the structural steel members ready for lining, pre cast laggings, as well as the rock anchoring bolts and plates etc. Dual air draft systems are implemented for maintaining oxygen levels in tunnels are major activities. It is a round the clock work and needs vigil and prompt action.
  • 22. The risk level is exceptionally very high. Vigilant Engineers with tremendous self confidence, alertness can prefer this job. The demerit is you cannot switchover to any other segment of civil engineering if you prefer specialize for tunneling works. Tunnel works are generally in remote areas away from the cities or villages. The camps are near by sites. Communication is very vital requirement. G) Railways and Airport engineering :- Construction of new railway lines or extension of the number of lines. They cover from earthwork in embankment, cutting, Major bridges, tunnels, viaducts, RUB and ROB’s, minor bridges etc to station buildings, quarters and platforms. Usually new projects are away from development in remote areas and are major source of prosperity of the region.
  • 23. The commitment of delivery is exceptionally high, one needs to have knowledge of all aspects of civil engineering works. A passionate and dedicated engineer can prefer this segment. Knowledge of surveying, Geotechnical Investigation, computation of quantities through Calquan, making of base line schedules in MSP and reviewing, understanding and reading drawings, knowledge of AUTOCAD, Basic knowledge of Transportation Engineering, concrete Technology, basic design of structures, integration of basic knowledge of mechanical, instrumentation and electrical engineering are preferred. Logistics play very Vital role in these works as they are also spread in large stretches like road works. Co ordination and communications are Vital tools. They cover almost all segments of civil engineering works from road diversions, bridges, tunnels, aqueducts, slab culverts and arch bridges etc.
  • 24. I had cherished this segment during my earlier days with KR. Railway and Air port engineering needs technical sound skills and very high commitments as they move large numbers of commuters at a time and the accident due to poor workmanship or negligence will amount to heavy number of fatality. The dedication and commitment must be highest. We have heard the failures of tarmacs of air strips and failures of structures on running railway lines in the past. Our commitment being civil engineers in society is highest as prosperity of the nation lies with faster growth in infrastructure segment like roads, railways and airports. These are high priority segments for all governments in state as well as at centre.
  • 25. A passionate engineer can bring laurels to the nation by creating world class facilities. H) Residential apartments :- The housing has been the most exploited segment for consumers. The price of land, competition, pricing of the Flats, material price variations and political interference has been most impacting factors. The Government has set a regulation in this industry to tie down the owners for price control and timely handing over. One can see the change in attitude of the industry stake holders now. The rural migration is continuous process and hence the cities resources like roads, water supply, power and housing are getting strained and as a result there is opportunity for growth in these segments. Housing is substantially a private sector segment and top companies like Tata’s, Godrej, L&T contributing in these segments along with other small and large scale private players.

The builders and companies Keep an eye on growing trend of the markets, businesses, educational institutions and expending capacities of the individuals to decide the location of the plot to be taken and sizes and type of the apartments to be constructed to suit the affordability of the consumers. This segment needs services of Civil and structural consultants, architects, cement steel ,sand Vendors as well as the contractors or skilled workmen to carry out the design on the ground, it also needs liason with local bodies to seek permissions before carrying out the building lay outs. This segment accommodates highly skilled to unskilled workmen from unskilled males and female coolies , masons, carpenters, fitters, plumbers, tillers, painters to foreman, supervisors, engineers and project managers.

The requirement range for reinforcement steel, cement, sand plywood, wooden Ballies, supporting arrangements, nails, binding wires, Doors, Aluminum or steel windows, Tiles for floor and dado works, interior decorators, painters, kitchen cabinets, sanitary and bath fittings. The small scale industry is totally dependent on movement of this segment… The skill level required is understanding GA, Architectural and structural drawings, full knowledge of AutoCAD, computation of Quantities, co-ordination with various trade workers, work sequencing, knowledge of the basic planning tools like MSP, MS office tools, communication is vital tool. Productivity of various resources and rate analysis play very vital role in this segment.
  • 28. Negotiation skills, clear concept of minimum inventory levels of materials is necessity. One needs to interact with the potential consumers hence empathy is highly essential. Daily monitoring and corrective actions, proper use and repetition of the form works and committed cycle times from floor to floor makes life easier. Most of the engineers prefer this segment as they can operate from city or towns.. Considering this perspective there is tremendous exploitation amongst builders in this segment.. I) Intake structures, Water and waste water treatment plant, storage reservoirs, rising mains, distribution systems etc Water supply and sewerage systems are lifelines of all cities towns and Villages. The cities are growing rapidly due to rural migrations, floating populations thus compelling the local bodies to meet the expectations of water requirement and sewage rage disposal and treatment.

The intake structure for lifting raw water, treatment plants for converting to potable water, storage reservoirs , conveyance system from plant to storage reservoirs and then to end user need to be constantly added up to meet demand. Similar the sewerage or water disposal up to the STP need to meet the growing needs. These aspects must have been covered in your academics in environmental engineering subject.. These are basic needs for human survival and protection from epidemics. The intake structures are generally RCC wells in Rivers, reservoirs, minor irrigation tanks etc. They house the pumping station above them and the raw water is drawn and pumped to water treatment plant. The treatment plants convert the raw water to treated water through defined processes. The treated water is stored in MBR and pumped to high elevation ESR or GSR’s to supply to the end users on higher elevations than the MBR supply levels

The distribution system is run though the storage tanks through the streets for tapping the connections Similarly sewerage system is run though the streets with manholes to collection sumps and then to sewerage treatment plant through gravity or rising mains. The sewerage is treated as per laid down stringent guidelines and treated effluent is discharged as per pollution control boards Guidelines… local bodies cannot adopt to rapidly growing cities due to technological growth or rural migration. The capital investment is huge and it affects the road network also… Hence having correct population data is necessary to design the infrastructural needs to meet demands. Few Villages are added to cities these decisions also effect the environmental engineering works very badly and we have seen the effects of rivers getting polluted due to untreated sewage as the capacities of the plants cannot handle
  • 31. the abrupt increase in the sewerage flow. Addition of new hotels or commercial spaces increase the pressure on management of the demands. Currently all cities in Maharashtra are experiencing tremendous pressure for investment on water and waste water managements of the city. A political decision for growth integration like addition of Hotels, Airports, IT hubs, new industries, convention centers must have a robust plan for infrastructure development funding and implementation by local administration. Lack of co-ordination between the state Government and local bodies adversely effect quality of delivery. The requisite to serve this, segment needs excellent knowledge of Fluid mechanics, complete knowledge of aspects and impacts of environmental engineering, governing laws of the pollution control boards, urge to seek logistical data from the Government departments,
  • 32. knowledge of concrete technology, eye on detailing and excellent command on surveying, liason with locals, co ordination, planning of works and monitoring, safety aspects while working along live road works, Basic knowledge of pumping machinery, electrical panels, SCADA system are essential. These works need tremendous patience till commissioning. Engineers with cool heads, dedication and belief in team working can survive in this segment. J) Project Management consultants :- This segments employs intellectuals from the respective fields of engineering who command the codes, can adapt to latest trends in respective segments and provide expertise services to government departments, companies etc. They can provide assistance from surveying to providing the implementable drawings with complete detailing.
  • 33. For example Government decides to convert state highway to national highway. These companies can render engineering services from studying the aspect and impacts on habitats, existing road geometry, Farming beside roads, acquisition expected to implement the decision, surveying and soil exploration, making tender drawings and detailing, creating technical specifications complying with prevailing IS codes and contract act with amendments as on date. current traffic data and increase in traffic, optimization of time and costs for moment of goods etc Rate analysis and commercial viability of projects. They can provide engineering inputs for implementation of the project proposals and can provide technical support for supervision after award of works also if demanded… These are specialized services as consultants for various segments mentioned earlier. There are consultants providing specialized services
  • 34. in some segments and there are large conglomerates who provide services in all segments like TATA consulting Engineers, Consulting Engineering Services etc, Engineers who are sound in application of knowledge and who prefer to contribute on intellectual side of the career can chose to work with them. They need to have knowledge of all software's available for quantification, creation of drawings, creation of schedules, up to date knowledge of IS codes and technical specifications governing single activity. They need to be up to date in technological advancement and should contribute for optimization of the costs. Being a specialized field the choices for change over on later dates are limited to switching over to similar segment as each segment needs high specialization. They prefer post graduates in engineering in respective core areas.

K) Working in head offices or regional offices of companies :- Companies require engineers for creating work plans, monitoring of works, creating Management information system for administrative, technical and strategic decisions, quantity surveying, rate analysis for tendering purpose, contract and sub contract administration, controlling rates and minimum stock levels and implementation of procurement strategy, providing logistic and technical support to projects with agencies, materials, creation of clients bills, reconciliation of all materials, enforcing the objectives of the organization, keeping eye on competitors working strategy, advancement in technology and study of costs saving measures to switch over to new technology. Engineers with excellent analytical skills, reasoning skills, communication skills, good command in oral and written communication, adaptation to change and high learning curve, having
  • 36. tremendous patience and working without prejudice can make a good choice. Companies prefer Girls / Women over Boys / men for these choices considering their commitment, integrity and loyalty to organization apart from above technical requirements. We have come across all the aspects of the opportunities with different flavors available to you. Right choices will not waste your precious years from switchover's as they end up in poor growth profile as companies do not prefer the candidates who switchover jobs frequently… I recommend you not to make haste and try to learn AutoCAD, MSP or primavera, analysis of rates, knowledge of Major equipments used in all construction segments, productivity of the equipments before entering the brand new world of Service to civil engineering industry….. Few prefer to enter the Government segments by trying for class I services or written tests for JE, AEE, AE etc. my suggestion to them shall be , please make your base strong in core areas like foundation engineering
  • 37. surveying, concrete technology, design of RCC frames structures, Design of steel structures, Fluid mechanics, Environmental engineering, basic design of dams, carriageways, analysis of rates etc… Once you are selected, you need to validate the proposals being at junior levels of consultants who have tremendous knowledge of all engineering aspects as well as codes, best construction practices… you need to decide what is in the interest of the government by providing your inputs. else life will end up in compromises and frustration. You will not have satisfaction of services rendered. You have greater responsibility being a servant of the Government and having assigned the task to utilize public funds in the larger interest of the society by providing the optimized and durable product. We have examples of exemplary engineers who discharge their duties will due diligence. You can be one of the bright engineers of the nation.
  • 38. Indian Engineering services Exams for central government engineering are most sought amongst the bright students. IRSE, MES, CPWD are the departments students are given posting… These are highly responsible posts and given larger command areas to deliver. Unless you are very good in possession of knowledge and know latest trends in technology advancements, you will not be able to make justice with the given assignments. I was fortunate to work with IRSE Dy chief Engineer and Chief Engineers while working with KR. They had excellent command on all civil engineering subjects and I was groomed properly in all areas and could discharge my responsibility very sensibly. Today it gives me sense of pride to be part of KR creation team. Most important aspect is understanding our Moral and Ethical responsibility and to be a good human being. Being Engineers you will come across many situations which compel you to compromise on your Moral and Ethical education these educational institutions had offered you write from your school apart from the parents support.

We have very recent stories of bridge collapse over Savitri river and losing the life's of the commuters for no fault of them just because engineering team had failed to do the structural audit and provide inputs to administration and raising the alarm. We have equally heard that the new bridge at same location was done in less than three months duration and opened to traffic before monsoon The recently constructed roads in Mumbai are getting potholes and investigation is being done. We hear the dams taken up during earlier government regime made the situation grim in Maharashtra leading to famine situation and cost over runs of the projects have reached to such levels where government is not able to fund these projects for completion. Government of Maharashtra had prioritized the works to complete at least those projects which are in advanced stages of completion thus making investment useful to avoid cost over runs. The famine situations have taken toll of lifes of many of our farmers in India
  • 40. Engineers play a vital role in advising the administration the cause and effects of every decision. Hence technocrats play very vital role in nation building. We must do our duty with due diligence. Moral and ethical education can differentiate between wisdom and greed. One needs to evaluate the effects of the decision or action initiated on a larger scale. Challenges will be many but the brave need to keep high self esteem and nation at large before sacrificing for the smaller gains. These responsibilities will come when you hold such high offices. We need excellent technocrats which our nation must feel proud. I had opportunity to work with Mr. E. Shreedharan, CMD of KR as well as the Delhi Metro.
