We conducted a field study on corn to evaluate the effect of liquid dairy manure applied pre-plant (injection or surface broadcast with immediate or 3-day disk incorporation) or sidedressed at 6-leaf stage (injected or surface-applied) on emission of NH3 and N2O. Manure was applied at a rate of 6500 gal/acre, which supplied an average of 150 lb/acre of total N and 65 lb/acre of NH4-N. Ammonia emission was measured for 3 days after manure application using the dynamic chamber/equilibrium concentration technique, and N2O flux was quantified using the static chamber method at intervals of 3 to 14 days throughout the season. Ammonia-N losses were typically 30 to 50 lb/acre from pre-plant surface application, most of the loss occurring in the first 6 to 12 hours after application. Emission rates were reduced 60-80% by quick incorporation and over 90% by injection. Losses of N2O were relatively low (1 lb/acre or less annually), but pronounced peaks of N2O flux occurred from either pre-plant or sidedress injected manure in different years. Results show that NH3 emission from manure can be reduced substantially by injection or quick incorporation, but there may be some tradeoff with N2O flux from injection.

The estimate of methane emissions during wastewater treatment has an important significance for proposing methane reduction measures on the technical and economic feasibility. In this paper, the status of CH 4 emissions during sewage treatment of Henan Province is described. By obtaining the sewage treatment-related data and emission factor in Henan Province in 2010,CH 4 emissions in the year is estimated. The results show that CH 4 net emissions during domestic wastewater treatment is 21,764.10 tons in 2010 and that can evaluate the greenhouse effect and provide a basis for environmental management. The recent severe energy crisis has forced the world to rethink & develop the landfill gas type power generation which remained unthinkable for several years after its discovery. Generation of electricity by using landfill gases is unique and highly efficient with nearly zero pollution. Landfill gas utilization is a process of gathering, processing, and treating the methane gas emitted from decomposing garbage to produce electricity. In advanced countries this technique is already in use but in developing countries it’s still under construction. The efficiency is also better than other non-conventional energy sources. These projects are popular because they control energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These projects collect the methane gas and treat it, so it can be used for electricity or upgraded to pipeline-grade gas. These projects power homes, buildings, and vehicles. — The study comprises estimate of wet deposited nitrogenous compounds in Assam (India). Deposition has been estimated from a survey works (2010-11) at urban and peri-urban areas of Assam. Air samples were collected by clinical syringe (10 cm 3) for Oxides of Nitrogen (NO, NO 2 : NOx) and reduced Nitrogen (NH 3 , NH 4 + : NHy). The samples were diffused into 10 cm 3 each of distilled water and 0.1N HCl respectively for estimation of mean concentration of weighted hydrogen (µeql-1), quantity of elemental nitrogen (N) or nitrate (NO 3-1) and ammonium (NH 4 +) ions expressed in mg l-1 or kg ha-1 y-1. The measured concentrations of the nitrogenous compounds were interpolated with a properly used Kriging Technique on a 1km x 1km grid covering districts characterised by varying congestions of population, vehicular transport and of industrial evidences. There were many fold variations of these air quality parameters among the major sites and locations of the pollutants e.g. nitrogen deposited through aerosol of its oxides ranged from 6.0-38 kg ha-1 yr-1 , whereas nitrogen accumulation from the reduced aerosol was 7-24 kg ha-1 yr-1. Tissue nitrogen in some indicator plant species (e.g.Pinus longifolia, Ficus benjamina), collected from the square grids of polluted areas was also elevated. Thus, the hypothesis that the Northeast India, especially Assam is also facing with enrichment of nitrogenous pollution due to anthropogenic activities, mass vehicular and industrial growth, was tested.

Soil microbial communities have been proposed as indicators of soil quality due to their importance as drivers of global biogeochemical cycles and their sensitivity to management and climatic conditions. Despite the importance of the soil microbiota to nutrient transformation and chemical cycling, physio-chemical properties rather than biological properties of soils are traditionally used as measures of environmental status. In general, much is unknown regarding the effect of management fluctuations on important functional groups in soils systems (i.e., methanogens, nitrifiers and denitrifiers). It is only recently that it has been possible, through application of sophisticated molecular microbiological methods, to sensitively and specifically target important microbial populations that contribute to nutrient cycling and plant health present at the field-scale and in differentially managed soil systems.

The phosphorus (P) index is the primary approach to identify field management strategies and/or manure application strategies likely to lead to excessive risk of P loss. It has been over 40 years since the first research connecting agronomic P management and water quality and over 20 years since the initial publication defining a P Index. This session will consider opportunities to build on and expand existing P Index strategies to make them more effective at protecting water quality and friendlier to the target user.

Phosphorus indices provide relative loss ratings that then have a corresponding management response. Because most state Phosphorus Indices are qualitative it is not clear how the relative loss rating corresponds to actual phosphorus inputs into the receiving water and how the receiving water would react to these additions. Even with qualitative Phosphorus Indices, unless the water resource has a specific Total Maximum Daily Load, it is not clear how losses correspond to water quality outcomes. These issues will be discussed in the context of the 590 Natural Resources Conservation Standard for nutrient management.

There has been a tremendous amount of activity and funding of conservation programs with regional and watershed-specific cost-share initiatives. While there have been some successes, water quality response in many areas has not been as great as expected. This has led many to question the efficacy of these measures and to call for stricter land and nutrient management strategies. In many cases, this limited response has been due to the legacies of past management activities, where sinks and stores of phosphorus along the land-freshwater continuum mask the effects of reductions in edge-of-field losses of phosphorus.

Phosphorus (P) indices are a key tool to minimize P loss from agricultural fields but there is insufficient water quality data to fully test them. Our goal is to use the Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender Model (APEX), calibrated with existing edge-of-field runoff data, to refine P indices and demonstrate their utility as a field assessment tool capable of protecting water quality. In this phase of the project our goal is to use existing small-watershed data from the Heartland Region (IA, KS, MO and NE) to determine the level of calibration needed for APEX before using the model to generate estimates of P loads appropriate for evaluating a P Index.

The revision of the USDA-NRCS national standard for nutrient management in 2011 was driven, in part, by inconsistencies in state phosphorus (P) indices, rekindling debates over standardizing indices at regional or national scales. Reasonable arguments exist for maintaining the status quo, which allows for state specific site assessment approaches, as well as for regional and national P Indices, which would take advantage of expertise, resources and technologies that may not exist locally. In addition, a diversity of site assessment approaches have now been proposed that differ from the original P Index. Understanding the benefits and limitations provided with these approaches is key to advancing site assessment for P management.

We constructed a phosphorus (P) removal structure on a poultry farm in Eastern OK; this is a BMP that can remove dissolved P loading in the short term until soil legacy P concentrations decrease below levels of environmental concern. A P removal structure contains P sorbing materials (PSMs) and are placed in a location to intercept runoff or subsurface drainage with high dissolved P concentrations. As high P water flows through the PSMs, dissolved P is sorbed onto the materials by several potential mechanisms, allowing low P water to exit the structure. While they vary in form, P removal structures contain three main elements: 1) use of a filter material that has a high affinity for P, 2) containment of the material, and 3) the ability to remove that material and replace it after it becomes saturated with P and is no longer effective.

Livestock manures, including poultry litter, are often applied to soil as crop fertilizer or as a disposal mechanism near livestock housing. Manures can improve soil quality and fertility; however, over-application can result in negative environmental consequences, such as eutrophication of surface waters following runoff of soluble or particulate-associate phosphorus (P). In soil, P exists in many forms (inorganic/organic, labile/stable) and the fate of manure P is highly dependent upon soil properties, including soil texture and microbial activity. The Houston Black series is a calcareous (~17% calcium carbonate), high-clay soil that occupies roughly 12.6 million acres in east-central Texas. These Blackland vertizols are agronomically important for the production of cotton, corn, hay, and other crops, but their high calcium and clay content could lead to accumulation of P in forms that are not readily available for plant utilization. Accumulated P could serve as a source of legacy P if mineralized or otherwise transformed in situ or transported with soil particles in runoff.

The revision of USDA-NRCS’s standard for nutrient management coincided with significant assessment of the performance of Phosphorus (P) Indices in the six states that are tied to the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The 64,000 square mile watershed is the focus of unprecedented activity around nutrient management as a result of a 2011 Total Maximum Daily Load for P, nitrogen (N), and sediment under the Clean Water Act. In addition, the state of Maryland had required updates to it’s original P Index, resulting in broad scrutiny by various interest groups. Within this setting, USDA-NRCS funded a multi-state project to help advance the testing and harmonization of P-based management in the Chesapeake region.

2. Situation
• Ammonia losses from surface-applied manure can
be large, reducing manure N availability/economic
value and contributing to environmental problems
• Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas
that can be released from manure
• Injection or quick tillage incorporation can reduce
NH3 loss but effect on N2O emissions is less clear.
• How do manure management variables (timing,
method, incorporation time) affect
– NH3 and N2O losses?
– N availability/fertilizer value for corn?
• Can sidedressed manure be a viable N source?
4. Objective
• Evaluate the effect of liquid dairy
manure application method and timing,
and time of incorporation on:
– Ammonia losses
– Nitrous oxide emissions
– Corn yield and manure N
availability/fertilizer N value
5. Field Site
• Marshfield, WI, Ag Research Station
• Withee silt loam
– Aquic Glossudalf
– Somewhat poorly drained, 0-2% slope
• Previous crop = corn
– New site each year
6. Treatments
• Pre-plant manure (mid- late May)
– Surface application with disk
incorporation
• Immediate (<1 h)
• 1-day
• 3-day (surface)
– Injection
• S-tine (Kongsgilde Vibro-flex)
• 15-inch spacing
• 2-3-inch diam. band , 4-6 in. deep
– All plots chisel plowed 3-5 days
after manure application

16. Ammonia Emission
• Most loss in first 6-12 hours after
application
• Total 3-day losses (3-yr average)
highest for surface application
• NH3 loss reduced by injection (>90%) or
immediate disk incorporation (75%)
19. N2O Emission
• Increase in N2O flux after manure
application at PP and/or SD
– Injection most pronounced
– 6 to 12-day lag time
• Low levels of N2O late July to Oct.
• Magnitude and timing (PP vs. SD) varied
by year
– May be explained by combination of rain
events/soil moisture, soil temperature, and
manure characteristics and N content
22. Fertilizer N Equivalence
• Varied by year
– Weather, soil conditions, actual manure
N rate
• General trend (4-year avg.) related to
time of incorporation
– Inject (52%) >> 1-hr or 1-day (37%) > 3-
day (34%) > None (sidedress, 32%)
23. Summary
• Highest NH3 loss from surface
application
– Greatly reduced by injection (>90%) or
immediate disk incorporation (75%)
• Most NH3 loss in first 6-12 hours
after application
– Quick incorporation important
• Fertilizer N equivalence varied but
highest for injection, less for delayed
incorporation
24. Summary
• Injection of manure most effective
at reducing NH3 losses… but also
increased N2O emissions
– N2O-N << NH3-N, so not economically
important; but environmentally important
as a greenhouse gas
– But a portion of NH3 emitted eventually
converted to N2O (1 %; IPCC, 2006), so
trade-off may be minimized
25. • Alternatives to S-tine injection
– Tillage incorporation, but consider
residue management and erosion/water
quality concerns
– Different injection techniques (injector
type, depth, etc.)

• Sidedress application of manure is a viable N
source for corn
– Another window of time for manure application
– Can use PSNT to determine rate
– Practical limitations
• Equipment: Injection or direct incorporation preferred
• Field issues: equipment turning, plant damage
• Data support recent changes to UWEX
manure N availability (N Fertilizer
Equivalence)
– 50% injected or broadcast incorporated <1 hr
– 40% broadcast incorporated 1 to 72 hr
– 30% broadcast incorporated >72 hr or not incorporated
