2. WHAT ARE FERTILIZERS ?
Fertilisers are nutrients added to
plants to ensure that crop yields
are maximised and plant health is
preserved as much as possible.
3. WHAT ARE THE HARMFUL EFFCTS OF
FERTILIZERS ?
Most fertilizers contain the same basic
materials: nitrogen, potassium,
phosphorus etc. Many people use
fertilizers to give extra life to their lawn
and garden, but few people consider the
potential drawbacks of these fertilizers.
In an effort to be as environmentally
conscious as possible, it is important to
consider the potentially harmful effects
of fertilizers .
4. WHAT ARE THE USES OF FERTILIZERS?
Three elements, carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and
oxygen (O), are supplied by air and water.
When the chlorophyll (green pigments of
plants are exposed to light, these three
elements are combined in a process called
photosynthesis to make carbohydrates, with
a subsequent release of oxygen. The water is
brought into the plant by root absorption
from the soil system. Carbon dioxide (CO2)
enters the plant through small leaf openings
called stomata. The rate at which
photosynthesis occurs is directly influenced by
the water and nutritional status of the plant.
Maximum rates are determined ultimately by
the genetics of the plant.
5. WHAT AREMANURES?
Manure is organic matter, mostly
derived from animal feces except in the
case of green manure, which can be
used as organic fertilizer in agriculture.
6. WHATARETHEHARMFULEFFECTSOF
MANURE?
The main dangers of the application of manure
are runoff of manure or manure components
into surface water and leaching of nitrate
(NO3) and P into the ground water. Mineral N
in manure is largely present as NH3. If, upon
application of the manure, it does not
volatilize, it will be quickly nitrified, i.e.
transformed through microbial action into NO3.
Also, N mineralized from the organic fraction
of the manure, will readily be nitrified. As
NO3 is an anion that is not adsorbed by clay
minerals or soil organic matter, it is easily
leached in case of a precipitation surplus.
7. WHATARETHEUSESOFMANURE?
Using manure compost in the garden has
numerous benefits. Manure is packed
with nutrients that plants need,
like nitrogen. Using manure as fertilizer
keeps plants healthy and green. To
maximize the benefits of manure
compost in the garden, the proper
application is vital. One of the best ways
to use manure as plant fertilizer is by
mixing it in with compost. Composting
manure eliminates the possibility of
burning the plants.
