Native out-of-memory errors happen when a Java application runs out of memory, not in the Java object heap but outside it. The cause may be memory use for native libraries, class loading, multithreading, working data for the Java VM, backing storage for Java objects, or other reasons. No single tool can give you all the answers, and we need to cross-reference information from multiple sources to isolate a problem. Operating system tools, Java dumps, logs, and debuggers all provide useful perspectives, and your challenge is to line them up to see the whole picture. This session works through the tools and data available on the main server platforms to give you a repeatable framework for native out-of-memory error debug.

The controller is the brain of Apache Kafka. A big part of what the controller does is to maintain the consistency of the replicas and determine which replica can be used to serve the clients, especially during individual broker failure.
Jun Rao outlines the main data flow in the controller—in particular, when a broker fails, how the controller automatically promotes another replica as the leader to serve the clients, and when a broker is started, how the controller resumes the replication pipeline in the restarted broker.
Jun then describes recent improvements to the controller that allow it to handle certain edge cases correctly and increase its performance, which allows for more partitions in a Kafka cluster.
The primary requirements for OpenStack based clouds (public, private or hybrid) is that they must be massively scalable and highly available. There are a number of interrelated concepts which make the understanding and implementation of HA complex. The potential for not implementing HA correctly would be disastrous.
This session was presented at the OpenStack Meetup in Boston Feb 2014. We discussed interrelated concepts as a basis for implementing HA and examples of HA for MySQL, Rabbit MQ and the OpenStack APIs primarily using Keepalived, VRRP and HAProxy which will reinforce the concepts and show how to connect the dots.
This session goes through the understanding of Apache Kafka, its components and working with best practices to achieve fault tolerant system with high availability and consistency by tuning Kafka brokers and producer to achieve the best result.

Kafka’s New Control Plane: The Quorum Controller | Colin McCabe, ConfluentHostedbyConfluent
Currently, Apache Kafka® uses Apache ZooKeeper™ to store its metadata. Data such as the location of partitions and the configuration of topics are stored outside of Kafka itself, in a separate ZooKeeper cluster. In 2019, we outlined a plan to break this dependency and bring metadata management into Kafka itself through a dynamic service that runs inside the Kafka Cluster. We call this the Quorum Controller.
In this talk, we’ll look at how the Quorum Controller works and how it integrates with other parts of the next-generation Kafka architecture, such as the Raft quorum and snapshotting mechanism. We’ll also explain how the Quorum Controller will simplify operations, improve security, and enhance scalability and performance.
Finally, we’ll look at some of the practicalities, such as how to monitor and run the Quorum Controller yourself. We’ll talk about some of the performance gains we’ve seen, and our plans for the future.

Achieving a 50% Reduction in Cross-AZ Network Costs from Kafka (Uday Sagar Si...confluent
Cloud providers like AWS allow free data transfers within an Availability Zone (AZ), but bill users when data moves between AZs. When the data volume streamed through Kafka reaches big data scale, (e.g. numeric data points or user activity tracking), the costs incurred by cross-AZ traffic can add significantly to your monthly cloud spend. Since Kafka serves reads and writes only from leader partitions, for a topic with a replication factor of 3, a message sent through Kafka can cross AZs up to 4 times. Once when a producer produces a message onto broker in a different AZ, two times during Kafka replication, and once more during message consumption. With careful design, we can eliminate the first and last part of the cross AZ traffic. We can also use message compression strategies provided by Kafka to reduce costs during replication. In this talk, we will discuss the architectural choices that allow us to ensure a Kafka message is produced and consumed within a single AZ, as well as an algorithm that lets consumers intelligently subscribe to partitions with leaders in the same AZ. We will also cover use cases in which cross-AZ message streaming is unavoidable due to design limitations. Talk outline: 1) A review of Kafka replication, 2) Cross-AZ traffic implications, 3) Architectural choices for AZ-aware message streaming, 4) Algorithms for AZ-aware producers and consumers, 5) Results, 6) Limitations, 7) Takeaways.

From Java Code to Java Heap: Understanding the Memory Usage of Your App - Ch...jaxLondonConference
Presented at JAX London 2013
When you write and run Java code, the JVM makes several allocations on your behalf, but do you have an understanding of how much that is? This session provides insight into the memory usage of Java code, covering the memory overhead of putting int into an integer object and the cost of object delegation and the memory efficiency of the different collection types. It also gives you an understanding of the off-Java (native) heap memory usage of some types of Java objects, such as threads and sockets.
This talk will present an overview of shared-memory heterogeneous ( accelerated ) computing starting with the Cell Broadband Engine used in the Playstation 3 and the world's first 1 Petaflop supercomputer in 2008, to the current number 1 and 2 supercomputers: Summit and Sierra a decade later that combine POWER processors and NVIDIA GPUs in a high-bandwidth shared-memory configuration. We examine the architectural foundations, and we show the benefits of this architecture in a number of different computing domains, from HPC applications to Big Data and ML/DL for AI. We also spend time discussing FPGAs connected to the host processor in a shared-memory configuration and the recent developments in shared-memory programming for such systems.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
