RECOVERY
Our presentation will strictly examine the recovery gone
through by one of the most prosperous countries of this
century after being brutally dealt with by a country in its
opposing powers (THE ALLIED POWERS-USA) in 1945.
WE’LL TRY TO LOOK AT HOW JAPAN MANAGED TO RECOVER IN THE
FOLLOWING PARTS:
WHERE ON EARTH IS
JAPAN?
Which is its capital city by
the way?
THE SCENES AT PEARL HARBOR DECLARATION OF WAR
• On December 7, 1941, Japanese airplanes made a surprise attack
on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
• More than 2,400 people were killed, and many US battleships and
airplanes were destroyed.
President Roosevelt of USA declared
war against Japan on 8th December,
1941 and USA officially entered the
war on the side of the ALLIES
WHAT CAUSED THEIR
DESTRUCTION?
“LITTLE BOY” ON HEROSHIMA,
JAPAN

THE NUCLEAR BOMBS
“FAT MAN” ON NAGASAKI, JAPAN

THE
AFTERMATH
 Japan surrendered to the Allies on August 14, 1945, when the Japanese
government notified the Allies that it had accepted the Potsdam Declaration.
The two sides signed formal surrender papers on the US battleship
Missouri on September 2, 1945.
This date, known as Victory over Japan or V-J Day, marked the end of World
War II.
JAPAN SURRENDERS
 Japan surrendered to the Allies on August 14, 1945, when the Japanese
government notified the Allies that it had accepted the Potsdam Declaration.
The two sides signed formal surrender papers on the US battleship
Missouri on September 2, 1945.
This date, known as Victory over Japan or V-J Day, marked the end of World
War II.
JAPAN SURRENDERS
 After Japan’s surrender,
Japan’s economy and
government were
devastated.
 The country’s
infrastructure
(transportation,
communication, sewage,
water, and electric
systems) was demolished.
 The US had a plan to occupy and rebuild Japan in a way that would guarantee
the country would not pose a military threat to others in the future.
 General Douglas MacArthur was sent to oversee Japan’s restoration.
 The US occupied Japan from 1945 to 1952.
 General MacArthur ordered Japan’s military to be disbanded and closed all
weapons factories.
 MacArthur decided that Japan would be a constitutional monarchy in order to
preserve the emperor’s role in the country’s culture.
 He wrote Japan’s constitution, still referred to as The MacArthur Constitution,
and it is still considered one of the most democratic documents in the world
today.
REBUILDING JAPAN
POLITICAL RECOVERY
ELECTIONS IN
TOKYO, JAPAN
(1952)
General Douglas
MacArthur
and Emperor Hirohito
• Japan’s constitution also prevents the country from declaring war of
fighting with other countries (unless they are attacked first).
• After signing the new constitution, the Japanese government
pledged to pay reparations to the countries that they harmed
during WWII.
• The Japanese were also not allowed to rebuild their military in any
way.
NOTE:
 Even though the constitution ruled out the military rebuild of Japan,
United States was soon pressuring Japan to rebuild its army as a
bulwark against communism in Asia after the Chinese Civil War and
the Korean War.
JAPANESE CONSITITUTION
CONTI…
RECOVERY OF JAPAN'S
ECONOMY
• The US offered financial support to help kick start Japan’s economy
after WWII.
• This money coupled with a strong Japanese work ethic led to a boom in
Japan’s economic growth.
• Much like the US, Japan leans towards a market economy, which
motivates its citizens to develop new ideas and expand businesses.
• Zaibatsu, Large “financial cliques” that were broken up after World War
II. Famous examples include: Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Suzuki.
• And were later replaced by Keiretsu which included Toyota, Toshiba,
Honda, Nissan and other companies based in Japan.
• Emphasis on quality through team approach; job security for those in
good corporations.
 Japanese citizens were granted many of the same rights as American
citizens.
 Ownership of agricultural lands was transferred from landlords to
tenant farmers, and promoting labor unionism.
 The elimination of monopoly was undertaken and the prewar zaibatsu
were dissolved and were replaced by Keiretsu.
SOCIO-CULTURAL RECOVERY
PRESENT DAY
JAPAN
• On April 28, 1952, Japan became a fully sovereign
nation.
• America’s occupation and MacArthur’s rebuilding of
Japan has had a positive lasting effect.
• Today, the country has one of the most stable
democratic governments in the world.
• Japan also has one of the most powerful
industrialized economies in the world.
