This document discusses several events from 1937 to 2011:
- In 1937, Japanese officer Hideki Tojo was killed in China and Japan faced international condemnation for aggression in Manchuria. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto rose through the ranks of the Japanese navy.
- In 1941, the failing Konoe cabinet appointed Yamamoto as Prime Minister of Japan. Yamamoto pursued reforms and improved relations with the US while opposing war.
- WWII progressed without the US from 1937-1941. Germany failed to defeat the Soviet Union and Britain conceded defeat in Europe. The US saw rapid growth and became a refuge for foreigners fleeing fascism and dictatorships.
- From the 1950s-1970s, the

This presentation is on civic participation trends in Florida, particularly voting and community engagement. Florida's overall civic health ranks 46th in the nation, according to the Civic Health Index, a study carried out by the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship (a collaboration of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government) and the National Conference on Citizenship.
Following World War I, the United States adopted an isolationist stance. Starting in 1935, Congress even passed various neutrality acts to enforce the will against foreign entanglement. But by December of 1941, President Roosevelt’s formal declaration of war made this legislation irrelevant. Although America attempted isolationism, European and Asian affairs brought global tension that eventually hit the country’s traditional allies. An aim of World War I had been “to make the world safe for democracy”,

Churchill said many times that WW2 was an ‘unnecessary war’. He was thinking only of the Europe and not the WW2 in the Pacific. Hegemony, imperialism and nationalism had a lot of to do with it, but historian can never be satisfied with these labels. Unlike the sociologists, military strategists, the economists and psychologists, historians cannot be satisfied with generalisations. These are not specific enough for the historians. Historians like to dig into their subject in details and look into the specifics, motives and the events. Because their explanation is in such detail level, inevitably there are many shades of opinions and different views. Then they debate amongst themselves and hopeful come to some kind of conclusion as to what actually happened. But this is too complicated for politicains. They like simple explanation. Politicians pick and choose facts and events to build their case according to their political colours.
This is what is happening to the history of the Second World War. It is been revised, distorted and even denied. In authoritarian society, books are banned, views are censored and people are kept ignorance of the events. In a more open nations, this could lead to denial of holocausts and atrocities. Myths and invention can always manufactured to justify their ideology. As J H Plumb said in ‘The Death of the Past’, the role of the historian was to “dissolve those simple structural generalisations by which our forefathers interpreted the purpose of life in historical terms” and to challenge the use of the past as an instrument of political or social repression. In the words of British historian Eric Hobsbawn “We (historian) have a responsibility to historical facts in general, and for criticizing the politico-ideological abuse of history in particular.” No nation is greater or smaller because of their past, it is what they are doing today that matters. In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

An astonishing, first-of-its-kind, report by the NYT assessing damage in Ukraine. Even if the war ends tomorrow, in many places there will be nothing to go back to.
2. July 1937 Manchuria Isokuru Yamamoto Hideki Tojo, a young Japanese military officer, is killed by Chinese mortar fire. The United States, along with the well respected League of Nations, condemns Japanese aggression. Rises through the ranks of the Japanese navy. Promotes international recognition of the Empire. Attends naval conferences around the world, including the United States. Appointed Admiral later that year. Begins radical reforms to the navy.
3. Yamamoto as Prime Minister 1941, The failing Konoe cabinet appoints Yamamoto as PM. Yamamoto receives death threats from ultra-nationalists for his opposition to the Tripartite Act. Purges of the Japanese military, especially army, end with the dismissal of thousands of war-mongering officers. KMT allies with the Empire against communist dissidents. US embargos end and US-Japanese relations improve. “Should hostilities once break out between Japan and the United States, it would not be enough that we take Guam and the Philippines, nor even Hawaii and San Francisco. To make victory certain, we would have to march into Washington and dictate the terms of peace in the White House. I wonder if our politicians (who speak so lightly of a Japanese-American war) have confidence as to the final outcome and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices”. Yamamoto’s address to Diet
4. WAR! WWII progressed without the United States, other than economic aid to Great Britain. Nazi Germany fails to conquer and destroy the entirety of the Soviet Union. Adolf Hitler is overthrown by Prussian officers in a coup d'état after blunders at Stalingrad and Kursk. Great Britain is forced to concede defeat in Europe but gains former French and Belgian colonies in Africa. America is slow to break out of the Depression until the late 1940s.
5. Rapid Growth Thousands of refuges from Asia and Europe pour into America. Surprisingly, Americas welcome the foreigners, many of whom are intellectuals fleeing oppressive regimes. The United States becomes a bastion of democracy against fascism and dictatorships. Nuclear power is invented in the 1950s, solely for energy use.
6. United States and the Western Hemisphere USA becomes embroiled in colonial war in Cuba in 1965. Fierce student resistance explodes. Dewey defeats Truman in 1950. GOP gains power as the non-war party. At the same time, however, the US adopts an imperialistic and paternalistic attitude towards Latin America. US policymakers allow for migrant workers to legally enter the country.
7. The World as of 2011 Empires faced numerous rebellions, insurrections, and terrorist attacks. The Imperial age comes to an end by the 1970s. Islamic militants, led by Osama Bin Laden, attack the Reichstag in Berlin in response to German influence in the Middle East. The United States ends it’s imperialistic ways in favor of a “Good Neighbor Policy”.
