The 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami caused widespread damage across Japan. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake lasted approximately 6 minutes and generated a large tsunami with waves up to 40 meters high that hit Japan's eastern coast, sinking entire towns. Over 15,000 people were killed, mostly by drowning, and damage occurred to Japan's electricity, nuclear power plants, dams, transport infrastructure and economy. The tsunami's effects were also felt as far away as Hawaii, Russia and South America.
