MISS CATHERINE’S CLASS
Today’s Objectives
• Read aloud descriptions of
religions from page 44-45
of My World History
Textbooks
• As a group, choose top 3
religions you would like to
teach to the class…write
on post-it
• What is Fiction?...red
notebooks.
1. Christianity
2. Judaism
3. Islam
4. Hinduism
5. Buddhism
6. Traditional Religions…ex. Religions of Africa, etc.
Discuss with your groups…you have 5 minutes to discuss…
CHOOSE & WRITE DOWN TOP 3
CHOICES…
What is
Fiction?
• Great readers know about
the different types of
fiction…and while there are
many different types of
fiction, a writer’s purpose
remains the same—to
entertain readers.
Realistic Fiction
• Today, we are going to begin by
starting to read the realistic fiction
novel, Journey by Patricia
MacLachlan which we will
continue to read throughout the
unit…maybe during lunch today.
• Realistic fiction means that the
characters are made up but that
the settings and conflict could
happen in real life.
• When building the world of a story,
readers must ask a lot of
questions.
• Let’s begin reading but as we
read, if you think of questions
about the story which you feel
need to be answered, write them
down in your red notebooks.
• Read page 1 & point out use of
italics…
Realistic Fiction (cont’d)
• Read through page 4…
• What characters have we met so
far?
• Grandma, Grandpa, our
narrator, Journey and his
sister, Cat.
• What information did we read that
can tell us about these
characters…what are they like?
• Turn and talk to your partners to
discuss and jot down in your
notebooks.
• Finish chapter 1.
• Turn & Talk to your partner about
these characters, about what you
think is going on with the story and
what you are still wondering.
Realistic Fiction (cont’d)
• Read Chap. 2 through page 7…
• There seems to be some problem
…Journey seems to be upset
about a letter he & Cat received
from their mom…I wonder why
she’s gone—let’s jot this down.
• What do we know about this so
far? Turn & talk to your partners
about your thoughts.
• Read through page 10…
• Here I notice that Journey’s
bedroom seems to be at his
grandparents’ house.
• Read till the end of Chap. 3…
• Let’s pause here to create a chart
about our characters…who we
met, what we know and what
questions we have about them.
Building the World of the
Story
• Begin by listing the
characters and making a
note of what we know about
them.
• Then ask a question we
might have about each of
them.
• Ex. Why is Journey so
annoyed that Grandpa
takes so many pictures?
• Has anyone created a chart
like this about a book they
are reading at home?
• Maybe you would like to
create a similar chart in
your notebooks about your
independent reading books.

January 12 what is fiction?

  • 1. Monday, January 12, 2015 MISS CATHERINE’S CLASS
  • 2. Today’s Objectives • Read aloud descriptions of religions from page 44-45 of My World History Textbooks • As a group, choose top 3 religions you would like to teach to the class…write on post-it • What is Fiction?...red notebooks.
  • 3. 1. Christianity 2. Judaism 3. Islam 4. Hinduism 5. Buddhism 6. Traditional Religions…ex. Religions of Africa, etc. Discuss with your groups…you have 5 minutes to discuss… CHOOSE & WRITE DOWN TOP 3 CHOICES…
  • 4. What is Fiction? • Great readers know about the different types of fiction…and while there are many different types of fiction, a writer’s purpose remains the same—to entertain readers.
  • 5. Realistic Fiction • Today, we are going to begin by starting to read the realistic fiction novel, Journey by Patricia MacLachlan which we will continue to read throughout the unit…maybe during lunch today. • Realistic fiction means that the characters are made up but that the settings and conflict could happen in real life. • When building the world of a story, readers must ask a lot of questions. • Let’s begin reading but as we read, if you think of questions about the story which you feel need to be answered, write them down in your red notebooks. • Read page 1 & point out use of italics…
  • 6. Realistic Fiction (cont’d) • Read through page 4… • What characters have we met so far? • Grandma, Grandpa, our narrator, Journey and his sister, Cat. • What information did we read that can tell us about these characters…what are they like? • Turn and talk to your partners to discuss and jot down in your notebooks. • Finish chapter 1. • Turn & Talk to your partner about these characters, about what you think is going on with the story and what you are still wondering.
  • 7. Realistic Fiction (cont’d) • Read Chap. 2 through page 7… • There seems to be some problem …Journey seems to be upset about a letter he & Cat received from their mom…I wonder why she’s gone—let’s jot this down. • What do we know about this so far? Turn & talk to your partners about your thoughts. • Read through page 10… • Here I notice that Journey’s bedroom seems to be at his grandparents’ house. • Read till the end of Chap. 3… • Let’s pause here to create a chart about our characters…who we met, what we know and what questions we have about them.
  • 8. Building the World of the Story • Begin by listing the characters and making a note of what we know about them. • Then ask a question we might have about each of them. • Ex.
