There are two approaches to book reviewing:
Descriptive reviews give the essential information about a book. This is done with description and
exposition, by stating the perceived aims and purposes of the author, and by quoting striking passages
from the text.
Critical reviews describe and evaluate the book, in terms of accepted literary and historical standards,
and supports this evaluation with evidence from the text. The following pointers are meant to be
suggestions for writing a critical review.
Basic requirements
To write a critical review, the reviewer must know two things:
Knowing the work under review: This demands not only attempting to understand the author's purpose
and how the component parts of the work contribute to that purpose, but also knowledge of the
author: his/her nationality, time period, other works etc.
Requirements of the genre: This means understanding the art form and how it functions. Without such
context, the reviewer has no historical or literary standard upon which to base an evaluation.
Reviewing essentials
Description of the book. Sufficient description should be given so that the reader will have some
understanding of the author's thoughts. This account is not a summary. It can be woven into the critical
remarks.
Discuss the author. Biographical information should be relevant to the subject of the review and
enhance the reader's understanding of the work under discussion.
Appraise the book. A review must be a considered judgment that includes:
a statement of the reviewer's understanding of the author's purpose
how well the reviewer feels the author's purpose has been achieved
evidence to support the reviewer's judgement of the author' achievement.
While you read:
Read the book with care.
Highlight quotable passages.
Note your impressions as you read.
Allow time to assimilate what you read so that the book can be seen in perspective.
Keep in mind the need for a single impression which must be clear to the reader.
The review outline
A review outline gives you an over-all grasp of the organization of the review, to determine the central
point your review will make, to eliminate inessentials or irrelevancies, and to fill in gaps or omissions.
Examine the notes you have made and eliminate those with no relationship to your central
thesis.
By organizing your discussion topics into groups, aspects of the book will emerge: e.g., theme,
character, structure, etc.
Write down all the major headings of the outline and fill in the subdivisions.
All parts should support your thesis or central point.

Opening paragraphs set the tone of the paper. Possible introductions usually make a statement about

Why Write and How to Write a Review:
The purpose of a scholarly review is to summarize, analyze, evaluate, and place within a
field of scholarship whatever is being reviewed. Often, the audience of the scholarly
review has some familiarity with the text (book, movie, TV show, etc) that is being
reviewed. Even if this is not the case, the audience will have some background and/or
interest in the discipline and the subject. Consequently, the scholarly review is less a
summary and more a critical evaluation or commentary.
The type of review that you will engage in is often referred to as a critique, a critical
analysis, or a critical review. Whatever it’s called, the scholarly review tells an educated
audience of the significance of a text or film within the context of a discipline, field of
study, or particular subject or course.
Looking at reviews published in various magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals
will give you a good idea of the differing audiences and forms of review. You can find
current book/movie reviews using the same library tools that you use to find any other
type of academic source. Using the advanced search option, choose “book review” as
your preferred document type to limit your search to only reviews.
What a Review is Not
• A review is not a research paper. Some students, instead of writing about a book or
a film when they are asked to write a review, write a research paper on the subject
of the book or film.
• A review is not a summary. While it is important to summarize the contents and
significance of whatever you review, you are not merely informing your audience
of the basic plot or events. Instead, you are writing towards a different audience
that will be interested in a critical evaluation, analysis, and/or commentary on the
material.
• A review is not an “off-the-cuff,” personal response. Writing a review will involve
communicating a personal view on the material, but flippant statements that don’t
express your understanding of what you have read do not further the conversation.
Comments like: “I thought the book was interesting” or “The book was boring”
are not sufficient. Instead, you should strive to explain why the book was
interesting (not only for yourself, but potentially for others). Did the text reveal
some new data/thoughts? In order to be effective, a reviewer must be fair and
accurate. You will need to work hard to express the underlying reasons for your

1. Book Review
The Book Review:
o Although a book review, like a book report, spends some time discussing the content of the
book, its main purpose is not informational, but analytical and persuasive. The writer, in
analysing the content, format, argument, and context within which the book was written,
argues that the book is worth reading or not.
Preparing to Write the Book Review: Before you write the book review, but after you have
read the book, you should make notes on the following areas:
►The Author:
o Background and qualifications
o Writing style
o Use of sources (see Bibliography & Table of Charts & Figures)
o His/her purpose in writing the book
►The Book Format:
o Table of Contents
o Section & Chapter Titles
o Index
o Introduction (often tells the format, purpose, and intended audience)
►The Content:
o Introduction/Conclusion
o Preface
o Chapter summaries
o Tables, Graphs, Figures, etc.
Structure of the Book Review: The following format can be used for the Book Review.
(Note: you do not have to answer every question; these are only suggestions to guide your writing).
►Introduction:
o A general description of the book: title, author, subject, and format. Here you can include
details about who the author is and where he/she stands in this field of inquiry. You can also
link the title to the subject to show how the title explains the subject matter.
o A brief summary of the purpose of the book and its general argument or theme.
o Also include a statement about for whom the book is intended.
o Your thesis about the book: What is your opinion on the ideas of the book? Is it a
suitable/appropriate piece of writing about the problem for the audience it has identified?

Summary of the Content:
o Write at least 3 – 4 sentences about the plot: (What was the story about? Who were the main
characters? What did the main characters do in the story? Did the main characters run into
problems or have any adventures? Who was your favourite character? Why?)
o What is the writer’s style: simple/technical; persuasive/logical?
Evaluation of the Text:
This is the heart of your book review. You should discuss a variety of issues here:
o How clearly is the book written?
o Did the author achieve his/her goal? How did he/she do this or fall short?
o What are the author's most important points? List at least two examples of how the author
proved or did not prove points he was trying to make.
o What possibilities does the book suggest for the reader?
o What did the book leave out?
o How the book compares to others on the subject?
o What personal experiences do you have relating to the subject?
o Could you relate to any of the characters in the story?
o Have you ever done some of the things or felt some of the same things that the character did?
o What did you like best about the book? What did you like least about the book?
o If you could change something in the book, what would it be?
►Conclusion (Your recommendation)
o Tie together any issues raised in the review
o Would you recommend this book to another person?
o What type of person would like this book?
There is, of course, no set formula, but a general rule of thumb is that the first one-half to two-
thirds of the review should summarize the author's main ideas while the remainder of the
report should evaluate the book.
