The following presentation describes the best practices present along with the principles and approaches to implementing and maintaining a safety and health program for a construction firm.
OSHA recognizes that a wide variety of small and large construction job sites exist. Some are short-duration, while others may take years to complete; some sites are
characterized by frequently changing conditions, while other sites’ conditions may change less often. An effective program emphasizes top-level ownership, participation by employees, and a “find and fix” approach to workplace hazards.
The “find and fix” approach to workplace hazards refers to the “Hazard Identification” and “Hazard Prevention and Control” core elements. Because of the wide variety of site conditions, these two core elements should be implemented on a site specific basis in order to effectively detect and correct hazards.
The concept of continuous improvement is central to these recommended practices. As with any journey, the first step is often the most challenging. The idea is to begin with a basic program and grow from there. By initially focusing on achieving modest goals, monitoring performance, and evaluating outcomes, you can help your company progress over time along the path to higher levels of safety and health.Safety while construction & renovation

Construction case study
This work presents the results of a case study and describes an important area within the field of con-struction safety management, namely behavior-based safety (BBS). This paper adopts and develops amanagement approach for safety improvements in construction site environments. A rigorous behav-ioral safety system and its intervention program was implemented and deployed on target constructionsites. After taking a few weeks of safety behavior measurements, the project management team imple-mented the designed intervention and measurements were taken. Goal-setting sessions were arrangedon-site with workers’ participation to set realistic and attainable targets of performance. Safety per-formance measurements continued and the levels of performance and the targets were presented onfeedback charts. Supervisors were asked to give workers recognition and praise when they acted safelyor improved critical behaviors. Observers were requested to have discussions with workers, visit the site,distribute training materials to workers, and provide feedback to crews and display charts. They wererequired to talk to operatives in the presence of line managers. It was necessary to develop awareness andunderstanding of what was being measured. In the process, operatives learned how to act safely whenconducting site tasks using the designed checklists. Current weekly scores were discussed in the weeklysafety meetings and other operational site meetings with emphasis on how to achieve set targets. Thereliability of the safety performance measures taken by the company’s observers was monitored. A clearincrease in safety performance level was achieved across all categories: personal protective equipment;housekeeping; access to heights; plant and equipment, and scaffolding. The research reveals that scoresof safety performance at one project improved from 86% (at the end of 3rd week) to 92.9% during the9th week. The results of intervention demonstrated large decreases in unsafe behaviors and significantincreases in safe behaviors. The results of this case study showed that an approach based on goal setting,feedback, and an effective measure of safety behavior if properly applied by committed management,can improve safety performance significantly in construction site environments. The results proved thatthe BBS management technique can be applied to any country’s culture, showing that it would be a goodapproach for improving the safety of front-line workers and that it has industry wide application forongoing construction projects.

Background
To help make a connection between business research and its use in the real world, this course will use an iterative course project. Throughout the term, you will serve as the health and safety director for Sun Coast Remediation (Sun Coast).
Sun Coast provides remediation services to business and governmental organizations. Most of their contracts involve working within contamination sites where they remove toxic substances from soil and water. In addition to the toxicity of the air, water, and soil their employees come into contact with, the work environment is physically demanding and potentially contributory to injuries involving musculoskeletal systems, vision, and hearing. Sun Coast genuinely cares about the health, safety, and well-being of their 5,500 employees, but they are also concerned about worker compensation costs and potential long-term litigation from injuries and illness related to employment.
Health and Safety Director Task
Sun Coast hired you last month to replace the previous health and safety director, who left to pursue other opportunities. This is a critical position within the company because there are many health and safety-related issues due to the nature of the work. The former health and safety director was in the midst of analyzing these issues through the implementation of a research project when she left the organization.
Throughout the term, you will use your knowledge of research methods to bring the research project to fruition. You will conduct a literature review, develop research questions and hypotheses, create the research design, test data, interpret data, and present the findings. Each unit will accomplish one of these tasks. It has already been decided that the business problems will be best addressed using a quantitative research methodology. You will not collect any data for this project. The former health and safety director had already collected the data, which is provided for you in an Excel spreadsheet.

Reduction of Un-safe Work Practices by Enhancing Shop floor Safety– A case study
Industrial safety is of utmost important in the present industrial scenario in order to protect employees, plant and
environment. The present study is carried out in a machine tool manufacturing company. The initial study
revealed several problems with respect to industrial safety and productivity. Keeping these problems in view,
the aim of the present study was to analyse the existing layout and designing the new layout to improve the
productivity by ensuring safety in the shop floor according to the standards.The existing problems were
analysed systematically and solved by adopting andimplementing DuPont Safety Model. The implementation
resulted in increasing the safety and productivity in the organization.

Elimination/Substitution: The main goal for any fix to a hazard or exposure is to eliminate it altogether or substitute a product or method of doing the work to a less hazardous alternative. (e.g. green cleaning products)

The basic concept behind engineering controls is that, to the extent feasible, the work environment and the job itself should be designed to eliminate hazards or reduce exposure to hazards. While this approach is called engineering controls, it does not necessarily mean that an engineer is required to design the control. Engineering controls are the "first line of defense" against injury/illness, because they have the potential to completely eliminate a hazard, and do not rely on human behavior to be effective. For instance, rather than require employees to wear respiratory protection which must be monitored, inspected, trained, managed, it's much more effective to install a ventilation system that does not require any of those management activities or, better yet, find an alternative substitute that is less hazardous.

This literature review was obtained by reviewing and analyzing peer-reviewed scholarly articles related to Sun Coast's six problems. The six problems are particulate matter, safety training effectiveness, sound-level exposure, new employee training, lead exposure, and return on investment. This literature review will provide evidence on how each of Sun Coast's problems may directly impact the company and employees.
Particulate Matter (PM)
In 2016, Velentza conducted quantitative research on existing data concerning particulate matter and its impact on humans and other organisms' health. Velentza (2016) is a Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in psychiatric and environmental nursing at the Eginition Hospital in Athens, Greece. The study outlines particulate matters' classification, how they are formed and their direct sources, and the impact on the human body and DNA (Velentza, 2016). The study found that exposure to particulate matter can cause minor to serious damage to the human body, including increased phlegm, persistent cough, dizziness, respiratory problems, damaged lung tissue, and cardiovascular diseases (Velentza, 2016). The study also found that long-term human exposure to particulate matter can reduce a human's life span by one to two years (Velentza, 2016). The study relates to Sun Coast because there is a concern that particulate matter on and around the job site is causing health problems for their employees, which directly impacts costs for employee health benefits and compensation.

To help make a connection between business research and its use in the real world, this course will use an iterative course project. Throughout the term, you will serve as the health and safety director for Sun Coast Remediation (Sun Coast).
Sun Coast provides remediation services to business and governmental organizations. Unit Lesson
The practice of industrial hygiene does not exist in a vacuum. Most work locations must also attend to safety
and environmental issues. These three fields often overlap, both in practice and in how they fit within a
facility’s organizational structure. How they fit will depend greatly on the size of the company. Most small or
midsize companies do not typically have a full-time industrial hygienist on staff; therefore, the safety officer or
environmental engineer may also be asked to manage the facility’s industrial hygiene needs. This
arrangement will require the employee to know at least some industrial hygiene basics. If a small facility is
part of a larger corporation, the corporate staff’s responsibilities may include industrial hygiene services to its
remote facilities. Because the corporate industrial hygienist may only visit the facility one or two times a year,
the safety officer or environmental engineer will be very important in identifying and providing information to
the corporate industrial hygiene staff.
In some instances, workers’ compensation insurance carriers may provide industrial hygiene services to
facilities covered under a policy. Under this arrangement, the safety officer or environmental engineer
provides information to the insurance carrier’s representative prior to an industrial hygiene survey. The third
alternative is for the facility to use an industrial hygiene consulting company. This will also require substantial
input from the safety officer or environmental engineer.

5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.
