ITU Approves LoRaWAN as Global IoT Standard
Congrats on the LoRaWAN as a global IoT standard that was approved by ITU.
The LoRa Alliance, which works to promote the LoRaWAN standard for Low Power Wide Area
Networks (LPWAN), said the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has approved the
LoRaWAN as global IoT standard technology, Capacitymedia reported on 7 December.
Donna Moore, CEO and chair of the LoRa Alliance, said, "We worked together with the ITU-t
(ITU's telecoms standards division) to get the independent body to officially classify LoRaWAN as
global IoT standard, an international standard."
She said the decision validates the market's decision to adopt LoRaWAN as an internationally
recognized standard and sets the stage for further growth.
The ITU is the world's largest, most respected, and influential global telecommunications body,
and, as a subsidiary of the United Nations, it has a strong governmental background and plays an
important role in coordinating and developing technical standards on a global scale.
The LoRaWAN standard has been deployed by more than 155 major mobile network operators
worldwide and provides connectivity in more than 170 countries, and continues to expand, the
alliance said.
Its members work closely and share expertise to develop and promote the LoRaWAN standard,
the de facto global standard for secure, carrier-grade IoT LPWAN connectivity. loRaWAN has the
technical flexibility to address a wide range of IoT applications, both fixed and mobile.
Biel Jamoussi, Research Group Leader of ITU's Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, said:
"Collaboration between the standardization communities continues to become increasingly
important as the digital transformation of economies accelerates. We are seeing the ITU's
commitment to building synergies in standardization efforts for IoT, smart cities, and
communities, and the approval of this new international standard demonstrates a shared

Why is LoRa technology gaining traction?
Low-power wide-area networks are a popular research area for the Internet of Things, and their
application for smart city construction is more extensive than narrowband networks.
With the deepening of smart city construction, urban sensing applications will be more and more
emphasized. LPWAN network application has its special points: huge connection volume, low
communication frequency, low power consumption, complex coverage environment, and
high-cost sensitivity, so low-power IoT is more suitable for urban sensing IoT application systems,
which is the key construction network for future smart city construction.
As a member of the LPWAN network, LoRa's biggest advantages are also low power consumption,
easy networking, low cost, long transmission distance, etc. It can meet long time operation and
battery-powered usage time up to several years.
Unlike other LPWAN networks, LoRa is still well suited to the needs of localized areas and has the
advantages of an LPWAN network, but also supports private networking, which is more suitable
for the private transmission of enterprise data, and is more resistant to interference, more
penetrating and more reliable than narrowband networks.
There are currently millions of IoT nodes around the world using LoRa technology, and more and
more IoT applications are choosing LoRa due to the attraction of low cost.
With the global LoRa terminal products reaching billions, the cost of LoRa products will become
even lower. LoRaWAN open standard combined with no-cost operation frequency and the
low-cost base station will attract more low-cost demand solution application providers to choose

ITU Approves LoRaWAN as Global IoT Standard

The LoRa Alliance, which works to promote the LoRaWAN standard for Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN), said the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has approved the LoRaWAN as global IoT standard technology, Capacitymedia reported on 7 December. Donna Moore, CEO and chair of the LoRa Alliance, said, "We worked together with the ITU-t (ITU's telecoms standards division) to get the independent body to officially classify LoRaWAN as global IoT standard, an international standard." She said the decision validates the market's decision to adopt LoRaWAN as an internationally recognized standard and sets the stage for further growth. The ITU is the world's largest, most respected, and influential global telecommunications body, and, as a subsidiary of the United Nations, it has a strong governmental background and plays an important role in coordinating and developing technical standards on a global scale. The LoRaWAN standard has been deployed by more than 155 major mobile network operators worldwide and provides connectivity in more than 170 countries, and continues to expand, the alliance said. Its members work closely and share expertise to develop and promote the LoRaWAN standard, the de facto global standard for secure, carrier-grade IoT LPWAN connectivity. loRaWAN has the technical flexibility to address a wide range of IoT applications, both fixed and mobile. Low-power wide-area networks are a popular research area for the Internet of Things, and their application for smart city construction is more extensive than narrowband networks. With the deepening of smart city construction, urban sensing applications will be more and more emphasized. LPWAN network application has its special points: huge connection volume, low communication frequency, low power consumption, complex coverage environment, and high-cost sensitivity, so low-power IoT is more suitable for urban sensing IoT application systems, which is the key construction network for future smart city construction.
