Internet History
and Growth
Diff Between Internet , Intranet
And Extranet
What Is the Internet?
 A network of networks, joining many government,
university and private computers together and
providing an infrastructure for the use of E-mail,
bulletin boards, file archives, hypertext documents,
databases and other computational resources
 The vast collection of computer networks which form
and act as a single huge network for transport of data
and messages across distances which can be
anywhere from the same office to anywhere in the
world.
What is the Internet?
 The largest network of networks in the world.
 Uses TCP/IP protocols and packet switching .
 Runs on any communications substrate.
 TCP/IP, Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol, is a suite of communications protocols used
to interconnect network devices on the
Internet.TCP/IP implements layers of protocol stacks,
and each layer provides a well-defined network
services to the upper layer protocol.
Brief History of the Internet
 1968 - DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)
contracts with BBN (Bolt, Beranek & Newman) to create
ARPAnet
 1970 - First five nodes:
 UCLA
 Stanford
 UC Santa Barbara
 U of Utah, and
 BBN
 1974 - TCP specification by Vint Cerf
 1984 – On January 1, the Internet with its 1000 hosts
converts all together to use TCP/IP for its messaging

Intranets and Extranets
 Intranet
 Internal corporate network built using Internet and World
Wide Web standards and products
 Slashes the need for paper
 Provides employees with an easy and intuitive approach
to access information that was previously difficult to
obtain
Intranets and Extranets
(continued)
 Extranet: a network based on Web technologies that
links selected resources of a company’s intranet with
its customers, suppliers, or other business partners
 Virtual private network (VPN): a secure connection
between two points across the Internet
 Tunneling: the process by which VPNs transfer
information by encapsulating traffic in IP packets over
the Internet
