Potential Issues of Point Drainage:
• Costly; complex, time-consuming installation
• Impractical; uneven surface
• Inefficient performance; ponding and blockages
• Increased maintenance costs; poor access,
extra structures
• Deeper pipe inverts; conflict with underground
services

the trench drain
• Eliminates the “roller coaster” effect for
vehicular traffic

Parameter Additional Information
A. Catchment Area Length (m) Trench drain running length dimension
B. Catchment Area Depth (m) Depth of drainage catchment area

H. Catchment Area Ground Slope Can affect intake efficiency (surface water cross-over)
Armtec provides hydraulic design to optimize and size the correct trench
drain system.
Required Inputs
 Drainage area parameters
• Dimensions
• Run-off coefficient
• Slope (in the direction of the trench drain run)
• Design rainfall intensity
 Trench drain configuration
 Outlet type, size and location
Returned Outputs
 Trench drain outflow
 Outlet flow velocity
 Hydraulic grade line in the channel

Manning’s Formula
V = 1/n * Rh
2/3 * S1/2
V = Average Velocity of flow (m/s)
Rh = Hydraulic Radius (m)
S = Slope of energy line/hydraulic gradient
n = Manning’s Roughness Coefficient (s/m1/3)
 Empirical formula
 Best known around the world
 Widely used for open channel flow
 Assumes steady, uniform flow through the channel
HYDRAULIC DESIGN
Manning’s Formula Applied to Trench Drains
Non-Uniform Flow:
• Water depth varies between successive
cross-sections along the channel
• Flow velocity also varies
Unsteady Flow:
• Lateral intake: Constant addition of water along the
channel
Modified Manning’s Formula
Manning’s Coefficient n is increased from 0.010 to
0.025
It has been confirmed by hundreds of laboratory tests.

Grate Hydraulics
• The capacity of a linear drainage system is limited by the
trench drain dimensions and design, not by the intake
capacity of the grates.
• Combined intake capacity of grates installed over a
trench drain run is significant.
• Cut-off-drain intercepts ‘sheet flow’ of water across a
pavement surface.
• Grate design will influence intake efficiency of trench
drain.
GRATE HYDRAULICS
Grate Cross-Over
‘Surface water by-pass’ occurs…
 if grate intake area is reduced
 if water volume is too great
 if surface water approaches at speed
 if catchment area slope is steep
 if grate intake has been clogged
Required:
 Correct grate selection
 Regular maintenance

  • 12. Design Basics for Modular Trench Drain Systems REVIEW OF LINEAR DRAINAGE
  • 13. LINEAR DRAINAGE – APPLICATIONS
  • 14. LINEAR DRAINAGE – APPLICATIONS
  • 15. MODULAR TRENCH DRAIN COMPONENTS Catch basin Length: 0.5 m End cap outlet Locking bar Channel Assembly: Trench drain Length: 1m (or 0.5 m) Grate End cap
  • 16. Potential Issues of Point Drainage: • Costly; complex, time-consuming installation • Impractical; uneven surface • Inefficient performance; ponding and blockages • Increased maintenance costs; poor access, extra structures • Deeper pipe inverts; conflict with underground services POINT DRAINAGE ISSUES
  • 17. LINEAR DRAINAGE BENEFITS Benefits: • More efficient at intercepting runoff water • Ponding is reduced or eliminated • Shallow depth of construction • Easier grading • More economical (fewer manholes, less pipe, faster installation) • Easy access along the entire length of the trench drain • Eliminates the “roller coaster” effect for vehicular traffic • Aesthetic solution
  • 18. • 46. Grate Hydraulics • The capacity of a linear drainage system is limited by the trench drain dimensions and design, not by the intake capacity of the grates. • Combined intake capacity of grates installed over a trench drain run is significant. • Cut-off-drain intercepts ‘sheet flow’ of water across a pavement surface. • Grate design will influence intake efficiency of trench drain. GRATE HYDRAULICS
  • 47. Grate Cross-Over ‘Surface water by-pass’ occurs…  if grate intake area is reduced  if water volume is too great  if surface water approaches at speed  if catchment area slope is steep  if grate intake has been clogged Required:  Correct grate selection  Regular maintenance GRATE HYDRAULICS
