Join Dominic Turner and Jamie Kershaw for Surface Drainage 201, the interesting conclusion to our 2 part series on Surface Drainage!
The presenters will begin by reviewing key features of modular trench drains and then get into the fascinating step-by-step process for selecting the right modular trench drain system for a project. Key considerations they will cover include system durability and site conditions. You will also learn how to determine the load category for a specific application. The presenters will finish by reviewing the basics of hydraulic calculations for trench drain sizing.

Parameter Additional Information
A. Catchment Area Length (m) Trench drain running length dimension
B. Catchment Area Depth (m) Depth of drainage catchment area
C. Rainfall Intensity (mm/h) Provided by project engineer
D. Longitudinal Surface Gradient (%) Surface along which the trench drain is laid
E. Runoff Coefficient The permeability of the surface influences the runoff rate
F. Roughness of Channel Material Manning’s coefficient
G. Outlet Location, Size & Type Influences the discharge rate of the trench drain system
H. Catchment Area Ground Slope Can affect intake efficiency (surface water cross-over)

HYDRAULIC DESIGN SOFTWARE
42. HYDRAULIC DESIGN
Rational Method
Q = kCIA
Q = Design Discharge (l/s)
k = Conversion Factor
C = Average Runoff Coefficient
I = Design Rainfall Intensity (mm/h)
A = Drainage Area (ha)
43. HYDRAULIC DESIGN
Manning’s Formula
V = 1/n * Rh
2/3 * S1/2
V = Average Velocity of flow (m/s)
Rh = Hydraulic Radius (m)
S = Slope of energy line/hydraulic gradient
n = Manning’s Roughness Coefficient (s/m1/3)
Empirical formula
Best known around the world
Widely used for open channel flow
Assumes steady, uniform flow through the channel
44. HYDRAULIC DESIGN
Manning’s Formula Applied to Trench Drains
Non-Uniform Flow:
• Water depth varies between successive
cross-sections along the channel
• Flow velocity also varies
Unsteady Flow:
• Lateral intake: Constant addition of water along the
channel
Modified Manning’s Formula
Manning’s Coefficient n is increased from 0.010 to
0.025
It has been confirmed by hundreds of laboratory tests.

46. Grate Hydraulics
• The capacity of a linear drainage system is limited by the
trench drain dimensions and design, not by the intake
capacity of the grates.
• Combined intake capacity of grates installed over a
trench drain run is significant.
• Cut-off-drain intercepts ‘sheet flow’ of water across a
pavement surface.
• Grate design will influence intake efficiency of trench
drain.
GRATE HYDRAULICS
47. Grate Cross-Over
‘Surface water by-pass’ occurs…
if grate intake area is reduced
if water volume is too great
if surface water approaches at speed
if catchment area slope is steep
if grate intake has been clogged
Required:
Correct grate selection
Regular maintenance
