3.  The Kalabagh Dam (Urdu: ‫ڈيم‬ ‫باغ‬ ‫کاال‬ ), is a proposed hydroelectric
dam on the Indus River at Kalabagh in the Main wali District of
Punjab Province in Pakistan. Intensely debated, if constructed the
dam would have 3,600 megawatts (4,800,000 hp) of electricity
generation capacity.

 Kalabagh Dam is to be an earth fill 265 feet high, with water reservoir
capacity of 6.1 MAF over river Sindh, with two spillways for disposal
of excess flood water. It will have installed hydel generation capacity
of 3600 MGWT of electricity likely @ Rs1.5 per MGWT, equal to 20
million barrels of oil required for thermal generation of power
causing a saving of at least Rs100/billion in foreign exchange per
annum, and facilitating reduction in power tariffs.

5.  In December 2004, then President of Pakistan General Pervez
Musharraf, announced that he would build the dam to serve the
larger interest of Pakistan. However, on 26 May 2008, the Federal
Minister for Water and Power of Pakistan, Raja Pervez Ashraf,
said that the "Kalabagh Dam would not be constructed" and that
the project had been cancelled due to "opposition from Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and other stakeholders, the project was no
longer feasible". In 2010 after the worst floods in Pakistani
history, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousaf Raza Gilani,
stated flood damage would be minimised if the Kalabagh Dam
were built

6.  KBD will solve three main problems of Pakistan up to great
extent.
1. Load Shedding problem
2. Irrigation Problem
3. Flooding Problem

7.  Kalabagh dam which will increase the water resources of the country is
being opposed while Thar coal project, which will consume huge amount
of water and will contaminate all water, air and land resources of Pakistan
is being advocated by the government.
 Clean electricity produced by Kalabagh dam will be available to every
citizen of the country while Thar coal project will pollute all water, air and
land resources of not only of Pakistan but also of neighbouring countries
like India and China.
 The overall climatic change of Pakistan has slowed down melting of the
snow from mountains, thus reducing flow of rivers and leaving very little
water for the winter crops (Kharif) in Punjab as well as Sindh. In the wake
of this scenario, construction of high dams in the country is assuming
highest priority as irrigated agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s
economy.

8.  Equally alarming is the fastest growing population estimated to touch
170 million mark by 2010, growing at 2.1% per year. If nothing is
done, there would be approximately 18% shortfall in irrigation water
supply and Pakistan will turn into a water-scarce country. Due to
complete stoppage of any sizeable surface water resources
development, the sustainability of existing irrigated agriculture is in
serious jeopardy.
 With a large arable land, Pakistan still has the potential of bringing
several million acres of virgin land under irrigation. An important
impediment in the way of this development is insufficient control
over flood water of the rivers and let go large quantities of water into
the sea.

9.  Kalabagh dam is condemned by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and
Sindh. The Government time to time tries to make consensus on
the issue. The leader of Opposition in the National Assembly
Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah showed objection on the site of
Kalabagh Dam and said its a threat to small provinces. The Chief
Minister of KPK Pervez Khattak said that the KBD is against the
interests of KP. Awami National Party has opposed the
construction and site of KBD.
 Sustainable Development Policy Institute, an NGO, published a
case study on Kalabagh dam in 1999, mainly arguing against the
environmental and displacement impact of building large dams

10.  In conclusion we discussed about two disadvantage of kalabagh dam:
1. If Kalabagh dam is constructed than province KPK city name
Nowshera will submerged under water.
2. if Kalabagh Dam is constructed, river Indus will have no water in
flow and sea water will enter inside the river bed, damaging the
lands.
 Because of these two reasons Sindh and KPK are against the
Kalabagh dam project.
 The result of our report is that Kalabagh dam give many benefits to
our country but because of these two disadvantages we don’t support
this project.
