KALA BAGH DAM
INTRODUCTION:
 The Kalabagh Dam is a proposed hydroelectric dam on the Indus
River at Kalabagh in the Mianwali District of Punjab Province in Pakistan. Intensely
debated and deemed a necessity since its inception, if constructed the dam would
have 3,600 megawatts (4,800,000 hp) of electricity generation capacity.
 Storage capacity
 Retention Level
 Power facilities
 Estimated cost

 Per unit cost
IMPORTANCE IN NATIONAL INCOME:
 15% increase
 OBJECTIONS ON KALABAGH DAM:
 Misunderstandings b/w provinces
 The reasons due which kalabagh dam is not constructed, includes
various objections by provinces of Pakistan.
 The conservation of natural resources is the only way of achieving
self-reliance and prosperity. Nations which waste or squander away
their natural wealth are bound to suffer and face misery. Water is
not only a valuable natural resource, it is becoming scarce every
day. It must be remembered that even today the world has 20%
less water than it requires. 83000 people will be forced to migrate.
OBJECTIONS BY SINDH:
 The fertile land of Sindh will become barren
 Water level of decrease
 Productive capacity decline
 delta will effected
 Water-based jungles will affected
 Live-stock drinking water decrease
 Sweet drinking water tube wells will also affected
FACTS:
 Annual flow of water in river increase
 More water available for winter season
 Desert convert into cultivatable land
Objection by KPK
 Due to reserve of water in kalabagh dam, the severage system of swabi and
mardan will affected in bad manner.
 Water lodging and salanity will increase in KPK.
 Productive land of kpk will come under water.
 Mardan city will affected badly.
 Naushera will drown in water.
 Many people will migrate to other areas due to construction of kalabagh dam.
FACTS:
 Out of 83000 persons 48500 are punjabi
 27 new village will construct with latest facilities
 2010 & 2013 flood in naushera is it due to kala bagh dam?
OBJECTIONS BY BALOCHISTAN:
 Even the province of Baluchistan will highly benefit from the construction of
Kalabagh Dam. The Katchi canal, which at present has water for 100 days only,
will become a perennial canal.
FACTS:
 Cultivateable land for kharan desert
 Water
 Improvement in underground cannal system

* Kbd is ready to build and will take five to six years to
come on stream compared to twleve years for BD,
possibly 15 years.
* KBD will utilize water of Kabul, Chitral and Swat; BD
will not.
* KBD will utilize a big part of the 30 maf (Million acre-
foot) annual monsoon flow; BD is beyond the monsoon
range.
* KBD will prevent heavy floods by moderating floods of
the rivers in south pujab and sindh, particularly in the
kacha are between guddu and kotri barrages; BD will not.
* BD will require many years of seismic investigations
before work can start.
* Height 680 to 908 feet ( KBD 260 feet ) storage 8.1 maf
(KBD 6.1 maf)
* Implementation 12 years (KBD 6 years) cost USD 12
billion (KBD USD 8 billion)

RESOLUTIONS REGARDING KBD
Sindh Assembley Resolution
KPK Assembley Resolution
Balochistan Assembley Resolution
PUNJAB ASSEMBLEY SUPPORT TO KBD
Kisan board pakistan (kbp) welcoming the passage of a resolution in favor
of construction of kbd by the punjab assembley has called upon the
pakistan muslim league (n) to get resolution passed from the national
assembley too.
In a joint statement issued here, KBP president sardar zafar Hussein khan
and general secretary malik Muhammad ramanrohari also urged the prime
minister not to issue mere statements and get resolutions passed from the
provincial and national assemblies in this regard.
Sources of surface water availability
Pakistan depends almost entirely on the flows of indus system
for surface water supplies for its of irrigated agriculture. The
indus system consists of the main indus and its eastern
tributaries jehlum, Chenab, ravi, beas and satlulj and north
western trubutries, Kabul, swat, haro and soan.
Water availability in indus system
there is no way of knowing how much water will be available in
the rivers in the future. All we can do is study the past trend of
rivers flows from available records and assume that more or less
similar pattern will manifest in the future.. Fortunately we have
historic records of river flows available since the year 1922-23.
recorded history of 72 years(1922-1994) was 186.79 MAF in
the year 1956-60 as against the minimum of 97.74 maf in the
year 1974-75, with an annual average of 13.8.69, of which
83.6% is in kharif.
Net water availability-computation and
criteria
with the continuolus increase in water use/ commitments since
independence, particularly after siging of indus water treaty. 1960 and
construction of dams, barrages and link canals, one would have expressed
that the net water availability scenario would have been continuousl.y
assessed and updated.
1 Western River Rim Station Inflows 137.27 123.59 137.91 143.1
2 Eastern River Contribution 2.00 1.50 1.30 4.0
3 Uses above Rim Station 5.50 5.50 5.70 5.3
4 Losses and Gains (Inclusive of flows ) below Rim Station 10.00 8.00 10.00 10.0
5 Outflow to sea 5.00 3.00 10.00 5.8
6 Net Available for utilization (1+2+3-4-5) 129.77 119.59 124.91 136.1
7 Canal Withdrawals/ Accord Allocations 106.79 103.44 117.35 117.4
8 Balance Available(6-7) 21.98 16.15 7.56 18.7
9 Authorized uses by India out of Western Rivers 2.00 2.00 2.00 2.0
Net Available (8-9) 19.98 14.15 5.56 16.7
Conclusion
The Kalabagh Dam is not only beneficial to Punjab, but it
would be more helpful in erasing poverty from Khyber-
Pakhtunkhwa, as it would irrigate 800,000 acres of cultivable
land that is located 100-150 feet above the level of River
Indus.
It is ready to construct, but it is impossible to construct due to
political eye view.

  • 27. Sources of surface water availability Pakistan depends almost entirely on the flows of indus system for surface water supplies for its of irrigated agriculture. The indus system consists of the main indus and its eastern tributaries jehlum, Chenab, ravi, beas and satlulj and north western trubutries, Kabul, swat, haro and soan.
  • 28. Water availability in indus system there is no way of knowing how much water will be available in the rivers in the future. All we can do is study the past trend of rivers flows from available records and assume that more or less similar pattern will manifest in the future.. Fortunately we have historic records of river flows available since the year 1922-23. recorded history of 72 years(1922-1994) was 186.79 MAF in the year 1956-60 as against the minimum of 97.74 maf in the year 1974-75, with an annual average of 13.8.69, of which 83.6% is in kharif.
  • 29. Net water availability-computation and criteria with the continuolus increase in water use/ commitments since independence, particularly after siging of indus water treaty. 1960 and construction of dams, barrages and link canals, one would have expressed that the net water availability scenario would have been continuousl.y assessed and updated.

  • 31. Conclusion The Kalabagh Dam is not only beneficial to Punjab, but it would be more helpful in erasing poverty from Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa, as it would irrigate 800,000 acres of cultivable land that is located 100-150 feet above the level of River Indus. It is ready to construct, but it is impossible to construct due to political eye view.
