5. What is barrage?
A dam placed in a watercourse to increase the depth of
water or to divert it into a channel for navigation or
irrigation

7. History of Islam Barrage :
Islam Barrage is constructed on Sutlej river in Punjab
Provence of Pakistan.
It was constructed across River Sutlej during 1922-
1927 as a component of Sutlej Valley Project.
Sutlej valley project was one of the greatest gift by
Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbassi to the
State of Bahawalpur. In 1921 Secretary of the State
suggested the Sutlej valley project.
7
8. History:
According to this project new canals should emit by
making dams on three rivers and these canals should
supply water to a huge area of the State. These dams
are called Head Sulemanki, Head Islam and Head
Punjnad.
This project was started in 1922to 1933.
The appropriate cost of this project was 33 crores and
31 lacs at the end of 1933 out of which 14 crores were
provided by the State of Bahawalpur. Two crores were
paid from the treasure of the State and the left amount
was paid by taking loan from the government.
8
9. Location of Islam Barrage:
It is located on River Sutlej about 15 kilometres
(9.3 mi) north of Tehsil Hasilpur and about 7.5
kilometres (4.7 mi) south of Luddan on the Vehari-
Hasilpur road in DistricBahawalpur, Punjab Pakistan.
It was completed as Sutlej Valley Project for irrigation
of Nili Bar area.
Coordinates for dams are as following
29°49′35″N
72°32′57″E

11. Location of Nili Bar Area:
"Bar" is the name given to areas in Punjab which were
thick forests before the arrival of the modern canal
irrigation system.
Its soil is very fertile, as this plain is formed by the
mud that has been collected by rivers flowing from
the Himalayas.
Nili Bar is a geographical region in Punjab, Pakistan.
It is between the rivers Ravi and Satluj.

15. No of Bays
Originally the main weir had 16 bays each 60 feet wide
flanked by right and left undersluices each consisting
of 4 bays also 60 feet wide each.
However, after the damage caused by 1929 flood, when
six of its central bays (No. 11 to 16) collapsed, the
configuration of the barrage was substantially changed
in 1929-30 by replacing 6 collapsed bays of 60 feet
width with 11 bays of reduced width of 29 feet each.
Now number of bays is 29 where 18 are 60 feet wide
and 11 bays are 29 feet wide.
15
17. Canal System in Islam Barrage:
The main purpose of Islam barrage are Irrigation and
Flood control.
For irrigation, it has two off taking larger canals which
irrigate 689,000 acres of land in Southern Punjab and
700, 000 acres in the former Bahawalpur state.
Mailsi Canal (4833 cusecs) arises from its right Bank
and Bahawal Canal (5400 cusecs) from the left. A third
smaller canal is called Qaim Canal (558 cusecs) also
arising from the left bank.
17
18. Problems of Islam Barrage:
The major problem was insufficient flood passage
capacity of barrage in relation to flood intensities
developed over a 100-year return period.
The poor structural state of the headwork has been
documented to be poor in June 1998, due to
inattention, lack of interest, and the operations of the
headwork has suffered. Every September when the
flood level rise and India releases a large amount of
water, it creates havoc in areas downstream from the
head works.
18
19. Problems of Islam Barrage:
According to a 2011 report, River Sutlej at this point is
the most polluted river in South Asia. The combined
unregulated discharge of Urban and Industrial waste
during its course through India and later Pakistan is
the most likely source of this problem.
19
21. Necessity of Rehabilitation
In the Barrage the barrage, the main weir and the gates
operating mechanism are presently in a falling down
condition.
The aging process and lack of maintenance are significant
damage to the regulating gates and hoisting equipment.
Any further damage to this barrage can lead it to non
operative causing and will lead to to non-production of
agricultural crops, loss of revenue and increasing the
restoration cost, adversely affecting the national economy
in additional to human, social and environmental disaster.
21
22. Project on Rehabilitation:
The project envisages preparing detailed design of
rehabilitation and up gradation works at Islam Barrage
after review of the recommendations contained in the
Feasibility Report.
Rehabilitation of Main Barrage and subsidiary weir.
Rehabilitation and up gradation of Gates and Hoisting
System.
Raising and Strengthening of flood protection bunds, and
provision of wetting channels.
22
23. Project on Rehabilitation:
Provision of instrumentation and control system for
uplift pressure monitoring.
Design of Gate Automation arrangements for local &
central control, if feasible, with suitable option of
alternate power supply.
Provision of Emergency Spillway to cater for flood
flows in excess of design discharge capacity of the
barrage to avoid untoward breaches.
