• Established in 1926 as ISA
• Disbanded in 1942 due to WW-II
• Re-organized as ISO in 1946
• Three official languages
• ISO derived from Greek “isos” meaning “Equal”

• Int’l Standards are developed by ISO Technical
 Committees(TC) & Sub Committees (SC) by a six
 step process:
       Stage 1: Proposal Stage
       Stage 2: Preparatory Stage
       Stage 3: Committee Stage
       Stage 4: Enquiry Stage
       Stage 5: Approval Stage
       Stage 6: Publication Stage

• 163 members
• Three categories of members are:
    1.   Member Bodies:
              •   Most active national body
              •   Full voting rights
    2.   Correspondent Members:
              • Organization that don’t participate actively
              • Entitled to be kept fully informed

    3.   Subscriber Members:
              • Very small economy
              • Reduced membership fee

• Ensure that ISO standards are solutions-oriented and
  meeting customer needs
• Ensure the existence of clear objectives and broad
  stakeholder support exist
• Ensure the content of standards accessible to users in
  relevant formats and media
• Promote and encourage the implementation of ISO
  standards

Implementation & Performance
• A company which seeks ISO certification need to apply
• A certification company appoints an auditor for first audit
• Then errors if any, are pointed out for corrective actions
• Afterwards 2nd audit report is sent to certification company
• Then certificate is issued for 3 years
• There are no grades of competence, either a company is
  certified or not
