2. “Global Ranking and Excellence in Higher Education ”
Background : The global economy is undergoing structural transformation: there will be need for a workforce of 3.3 billion by 2020. This
structural shift in employment will increase demand for sophisticated workers, innovators, and thinkers who can thrive in a globally-
connected and dynamic economy. According to MHRD, “number of universities has notably increased from 20 in 1950 at 3285%, to 677 in
2014, which consists of 51 institutions of national importance (16 IITs, 30 NITs and 5 IISERs), 45 central universities, 318 state universities,
185 state private universities, 129 deemed to be universities and four institutions
established under various state legislations.
India, with its large workforce and increasing pool of higher education graduates, is strategically positioned to reap the benefits of this
shift. However, the ‘demographic divided’ will be squandered unless India is able to create a “globally relevant and competitive” higher
education system that serves the requirements of both the domestic as well as global economy.
3. “Global Ranking and Excellence in Higher Education ”
While the Indian higher education system has made considerable progress in terms of capacity creation and enrolment especially in the
last decade, it lags significantly in terms of “global relevance and competitiveness”.
To realize the full potential of the Demographic Dividend ,India need to produce the competent graduates
