According to her, prejudice is an inescapable product of the racist soceity in America. She goes on to
further explain the evolution of internalized oppression, which is when members of stereotyped
groups internalizes and perpetuates the stereotyped categories of his or her group. In addressing the
issue of intenalized oppression, Tatum gives some responsibility for the state of racism to the very
people who suffer from it.
In the article, Tatum uses the definition of racism that is given by David Wellman in his book Portraits

Is Prince Hamlet insane?
If a person walks into a room in a suit, they look professional. If a male walks into a room holding
another males hand, he is presumed to be gay. So if a young man walks into a room, and he wears
sorrow and anger on his face, he must be insane. Yet, if you change your perspective that man wearing
a suit may look professional, until he opens his mouth. The male holding the others hand is not in fact
gay, that is his brother. Hamlet is ideally pretending to be insane, but is his insanity really an act? That
question is answered not at first glance, but at first in depth observation. In some instances of this play
