4. History of IPC
• The 1800s- the field newspaper launched in 1853; other IPC titles released
in ate 1800s: Horse and Hound, shooting times, cycling world and railway
magazine; competitions and sales promotions.
• Early 1900- Woman’s weekly and golf monthly; ideal home released in
1921; Caravan, stamp magazine and Woman released during 1930s.
• Mid 1900- NME released in 1952 which created the first official UK chart;
1963 formation of IPC (Newnes, Fleetway and Odhams Press brought
together; Reed Group acquires IPC in 1970 to form Reed International; IPC
at forefront of pre-recorded video market.
• Late 1900- Formation of European magazines Ltd with Group Marie Claire
to launch UK edition in 1988; IPC Editorial Awards announced; Whats on
TV is released in 1991 to become the UK’s best selling magazine; Loaded
opens up young men’s market; IPC sold to Cinven in 1998; Formation of
five magazine companies based on the former publishing groups.
• Late 2000’s- IPC Magazines renamed IPC Media in 2000; Time Inc.
Acquires IPC Media for ÂŁ1.15bn in 2000; Nuts is launched becoming the
worlds first men’s weekly magazine; IPC moves to new offices in 2007; Pick
me UP launched in 2005 backed by ÂŁ6 million marketing investment.
