Ion exchange is a water treatment method where undesirable ions in water are removed by being swapped with less objectionable ions from an exchange substance. Both the contaminant ions and exchange ions must have the same electrical charge and be dissolved. There are cation exchangers that remove positively charged ions, anion exchangers that remove negatively charged ions, and amphoteric exchangers that remove both. Ion exchange has advantages like long resin life, cheap maintenance, and being environmentally friendly, but disadvantages like fouling of resins from substances in some waters.
