SSTL is a pioneering space company and world leader in small satellite design, manufacturing, and operations. They provide complete satellite solutions from concept through launch and operations. SSTL has a proven track record of over 470 satellite years in orbit from 43 satellites launched. Their expertise includes telecommunications payloads and platforms, including providing navigation payloads for Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system. SSTL aims to change the economics of space by developing low-cost solutions for satellite missions.
2. Changing the economics of space
Surrey are a pioneering space company and World leader in the Design,
Manufacture and Operations of high performance small satellites, the provision
of equipment and services.
.
The company prides itself on being able to provide satellite solutions from first
concept through to in-orbit operations and data processing,
• Specializing in adapting advanced terrestrial technologies and processes to
the space environment,
• Continually prioritizing the development of satellite technology and
delivering missions with a high ratio of performance to cost.

9. Drive & Pull
The drive is our Vision:
• Changing the economics of space
• To challenge the overall cost performance point and to
stimulate new customers, markets, applications and services
• To develop a SSTL “beyond LEO” capability and a sustainable
business area
The pull is from the market
• Customer community wanted to see progression beyond LEO
• Business opportunity to stimulate new customers, applications
and services, as SSTL has done successfully in other areas
10. Progressive Deployment
Products have been designed to fill the market requirement for cost-effective,
rapid response small geostationary spacecraft providing solutions for filing
protection, service start-up, capacity augmentation, etc.
Small satellite solutions are ideally suited to progressive deployment, allowing
capacity roll-out to be tailored to meet market needs and financial constraints.
11. Commercial objectives
Low CAPEX
• Design based on proven technologies
• Scalability and flexibility
• Minimise new developments
Low cost launch
• Design compatible with commercially available
launchers with back-ups
• Stacked, Adapter, Direct Injection, EP
Low cost operation
• Operational software readily plugged into an existing
ground segment infrastructure
• Alternative low cost solution can be offered
12. Product Positioning
SSTL identified a needs for telecommunication satellite solution, addressing
relatively quick construction time and less expensive Capex.
Segments of existing and emerging markets with a need of smaller capability or
that is currently under-served.
Such segments will be complimentary to Eurostar-3000’s capability.

22. GMP-A (upper stage flight opportunity)
Commercial scenario
Launch cost barrier for missions around 15 transponders.
• Price per transponder is still too expensive
• The business case cannot be secured.
The great majority of telecommunication missions are
launched with unsold capabilities in terms of launch mass.
• ‘excess’ is synonymous of ‘unused’ and ‘unsold’.
The idea behind GMP-A
• Use the empty volume inside the launch adapter
• No impact on the primary passenger nor the fairing design.
Commercial objective
• Not simply targeting a particular ‘niche’ in the market, but
aiming at creating a ‘new ecosystem’ of opportunities for
operators, satellite manufactures and launch providers.
The most affordable, reliable
opportunity to deliver payloads
to GEO.
A novel satellite platform
designed to utilize unused
launch vehicle capacity, while
providing state-of-the-art
approaches to manufacturing
and propulsion.
