Introduction to Electronic Media
Electronic media are media that use
electronics or electromechanical means for
the audience to access the content. This is
in contrast to static media (mainly print
media), which today are most often
created digitally, but do not require
electronics to be accessed by the end user
in the printed form.
Purpose of Electronic Media
The purpose of using electronic media can be for
many reasons, one of the reasons is that you can
use it to market yourself and anything else from
businesses to products and so on. Electronic
media is an efficient way to communicate to one
another, either by the use of media devices and
networks or social media sources such as
Television or the Internet these are a few of the
many ways you can use Electronic media to your
advantage.
Types of Electronic media
There is a wide range of
Electronic media that broadcast
a variety of different things like
advertisements and promotions.
Different Electronic media types
are below:
• Television
• Radio
• Internet
• Shops
• Television is one of the most used Electronic media
devices because franchises can pay for
advertisements to show millions of people, thus
bringing in more business for the franchise owner.
• The Radio is similar but does not give the audience
visuals, just sound. This method of Electronic media
can be effective and much more affordable than
Television but does not engage the listeners as much
as visual ads.
• The Internet is one of the most profitable Electronic
media devices, with a single click of a button ads will
fill the webpage, and is definite to catch a few
glimpses for fellow web surfers.
• Shops have Electronic media in most places, whether
it be on an electric billboard or ATM screen Electronic
media is sure to be in almost everywhere you go.
Terms used for Electronic media
• Broadcasting: To transmit or send information through the use of various
Electronic media devices.
• Media: The wide world of mass communication through Electronic media.
Organizational Setup of TV
Script for Radio
• Scriptwriting is a fundamental technique of being creative either for content
production, copywriting, or art direction.
• If you aspire to be a copywriter, the program is designed to your writing
skills for various communication styles and media such as writing for video
and audio content, television and radio commercials, and the web.
• There are the following steps for writing a script for radio.
1. Prepare An Outline
2. Setting the Scene
3. Make It Sound Conversational
4. Keep Your Scripts Clear
5. Pay Attention To The Rhythm
1. Prepare An Outline
• The thought of writing a 2000-word audio script may overwhelm you. Start
this daunting task by outlining. Armed with an outline, carry out your
research, and prep your script.
2. Setting the Scene
• Whether you are breaking a news story or telling a joke on your show, you
have to remember that your listeners don’t have the same visual aid as
opposed to television or online video. Give your listeners enough detail to set
the scene.
• For example, introduce shows with an “anchor intro”. It quickly sets up your
show or a story by putting it into context without going into detail or giving
too much away. Listeners know what to expect and are engaged to continue
listening.
3. Make It Sound Conversational
• Audio programs are at their best when they sound natural, whether they are fully
scripted or not. Ensure your grammar is concise and succinct, as it will allow you to
improvise and expand on what you have written.
• Write the way you speak. A well-written script, read word by word, should be
invisible to the listener. Your script has to sound natural and relaxed. Read your
script aloud or have someone do the reading.
• Can’t find humans ready to help? No problem, put your script in a text-to-speech
program. Microsoft Word has a text-to-speech feature. If you catch your breath in the
middle of a sentence then shorten your sentences.
• If words are too hard to articulate well or their meaning could be lost to the listener,
try using simple words wherever possible. Also, take advantage of free online tools
like the Hemingway Editor to help you identify complex sentences.
4. Keep Your Scripts Clear
• Write a script and try to keep it as simple as possible. Do not add
unnecessary words to sentences that will not add to what you are trying to
say.
• Reading from a script can sometimes make you sound a bit unnatural and
you can come off stiff and robotic. That’s a big mistake. A script should
sound natural when reading aloud. A more formal approach and style can
result in an unnatural-sounding and boring show.
5. Pay Attention To The Rhythm
• To create rhythm and pace in your script, use long and short sentences. As a rule
of thumb, short sentences should add tension and longer sentences should be
relaxed.
• Whether your radio program is scripted or unscripted, with or without music or
special effects, it makes sense to plan in advance so you can produce the best
content possible. Follow a well-structured plan and script to keep your audience
engaged and coming back for more.
Glossary of Electronic Media
• Drama
• Live Show
• Infotainment
• Documentary
• Talk Shows
• Telethon
• Global Village
• Marathon
Drama
• Drama is defined as a form of performance that involves conflicts, emotions,
and the portrayal of human experiences through dialogue and action. It
typically presents a story or situation that engages the audience's emotions,
evoking intense feelings such as tension, excitement, or empathy. Words
such as theater, dramatics, and theatrical performances are often
synonymous with drama.
• Drama has a long and rich history, dating back thousands of years. Its
origins can be traced to ancient Greece. Greek drama set the foundation for
Western theater, and its influence can still be seen today. In the Middle
Ages, drama became intertwined with religious rituals, with performances
based on biblical stories. During the Renaissance, playwrights like William
Shakespeare revolutionized the form, creating enduring works such
as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. These examples of drama
explored a wide range of themes and emotions, capturing the essence of
human drama.
Live Show
• Live television is a television production broadcast in real-time, as events
happen, in the present. Shows broadcast live include
1. Newscasts
2. Awards shows
3. Sports programs.
• The shows which doesn’t occur in real-time and that undergo serious editing,
taking a lot of time before being released to the audience are shows that are
not live. Some of them include:
1. Sitcoms.
2. Netflix TV series
Infotainment
Infotainment is a type of media that tries to combine educational or useful
information and entertaining content. Infotainment is designed to help
promote the acquisition of specific information, skills or trades in a format
that appeals to users. Infotainment usually refers to televised news content
and is considered a disparaging term because it implies a contrast in quality
and respectability between this type of content and true news.
Documentary
A documentary is a presentation (such as a film or novel) expressing or
dealing with factual events.
There are 6 Types of Documentary Films
1. Poetic Documentaries.
2. Expository Documentaries.
3. Observational Documentaries.
4. Participatory Documentaries.
5. Reflexive Documentaries.
6. Performative Documentaries.
Talk Show
A talk show is a television programming, radio programming or Podcast genre
structured around the act of spontaneous conversation. A talk show is
distinguished from other television programs by certain common attributes. In
a talk show, one person discusses various topics put forth by a talk show host.
Telethon
A telethon is a long television program usually to solicit funds, especially for a
charity.
Global Village
The global village definition implies that even when people are not physically
close, they can still connect, share experiences, and access the same
information through technologies, such as social media. Through these
platforms, people can express themselves and make an impact on any part of
the world. The internet has also made it easy for real-time communication.
Marathon
A marathon is an event in which viewers or readers engage many hours'
worth of media (film, television, books, YouTube videos, etc.) in a condensed
time period. This phrase represents a two-fold shift from binge-watch in that
it incorporates other media (not just television) and it reduces the negative
connotations associated with bingeing. In the 2014 book Media Marathoning:
Immersions in Morality, Lisa Perks describes media marathoning as a
"comprehensive and complimentary phrase" that "connotes a conjoined
triumph of commitment and stamina.
Critical Analysis of Radio and TV
Program
• It can be an analysis of any type of work, such as a piece of literature, a TV
program, a film, a business process, or an academic report. Critical analyses
typically include the writer's opinion of the positive and negative qualities of
the work they're analyzing. Here are the following steps for writing a critical
analysis.
1. Become familiar with the work
2. Create an outline
3. Write an introduction
4. Write your body paragraphs
5. End with a conclusion
6. Proofread and refine your work
Tips for writing Critical Analysis
o Use transitional words and phrases.
o Write in the third person.
o Be concise.
o Write logically.
