52. INTERNATIONAL VISITORS
PRESIDENT LYNDON B JOHNSON
‘’Our goal is an elementary
one. It is this: to give each
man in the world a chance
to seek the highest and the
deepest of the human
experience, as he sees fit.’’
‘’You are doing that today
here in Thailand.’’
October 29, 1966
At AIT, the entire inaugural cohort of faculty members was international. Students came from SEATO countries, but by 1962, students from India, Malaysia and Taiwan joined.
For most universities, “international” means “international students.” This is one aspect – and perhaps the end goal of many universities.
For most universities, “international” means “international students.” This is one aspect – and perhaps the end goal of many universities.
It was in 2015 that AIT crossed the 100-country mark when graduates from Colombia, Namibia and Sierra Leone graduation. Since then it has touched 102.
Alumni Spread is an important indicator. It is like having ambassadors all over the world.
Besides Alumni Spread, Achievements of alumni are equally important as an indicator for intenationality.
Out of the 9 regular presidents, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has had only 2 Asian Presidents (with 1 being of Asian origin and European nationality). So only 1 of AIT Presidents has been fully Asian (and Thai).
The aim is to achieve a perfect diversity ratio of “1.” At AIT, the overarching principle is to divide the world into 4 quarters, with each quarter representing 25% of staff. The tendency to skew in favour of the host country or neighbouring countries is always difficult to avoid.
It is not just students and staff. Even the Governance should be international. The Board of Trustees that governs AIT is also international. Ambassadorial representation also brings a commitment from the respective governments.
Scholarships are available for students of virtually all nationalities.
Scholarships come from various countries, and not just the host country alone. In this case the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NMFA) offered scholarships to students from Myanmar to study at AIT.
Here DAAD from Germany is honouring students from CLMV countries.
All programmes are international. Be it Double degree, dual degree, or joint degree.
A number of Erasmus programmes offer mobility to European students to study at AIT, and for AIT students to study in Europe.
In this case students from University of Borås spent a semester at AIT. One faculty member accompanied them for the entire semester. The article, written by the author, was published in The Nation (Thailand).
Here a student from Pakistan, who was studying in Thailand, went to Korea for an internship. Many companies and organizations offer internships at AIT hoping to attract students from multiple nationalities.
Areas and location of research has to be international as well. While local and regional research problems are certainly very relevant, international research areas provide the extracutting edge.
Example of a three-year project on “Strengthening Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment and Early Warning Systems with Applications of Space and Geographic Information Systems in Pacific Island Countries.”
Besides site-specific research, research is also global in nature, particularly when it comes to formation of policy documents.
Curriculum should not be too local for international students. Case studies, field work and examples/citations have to be global.
Next to students, internationalization of education is often considered synonymous with international partners.
This is a classic example of partnership with an international NGO. AIT students join TSF as volunteers whenever a disaster strikes anywhere in the Asia-Pacific.
Examples of partnership: Curriculum development and in fisheries and agriculture, studies on rice, food security, peri urban agriculture, joint publications, and capacity building.
Partnerships with regional organizations. Examples include
