With nurses and midwives providing the majority of health care globally, nursing education in all countries must
prepare students for broader responsibilities to move the agenda forward for equitable care and universal health
coverage. Columbia University School of Nursing developed and implemented a vibrant approach to curriculum
transformation that included a new didactic course followed by a program of global clinical experiences to
expand students' learning environments in global health. Program planning included defining learning objec-
tives, mobilizing support within the school, establishing new sites, recruiting and preparing students, overseeing
of students with host institutions, and evaluating the program. A total of twenty-four students were placed over
five sites for a six-week credit-bearing global clinical experience. Students had varied clinical experiences with
new understandings of the reality of health disparities. Host sites expressed a commitment to have students
return in the next year, and all students stated that they would chose a global experience again. This innovation
provides a transformative addition to nursing education with a deepened understanding of health disparities and
nursing roles in different health systems. It strengthens the school's network of nursing and midwifery educators
and opens doors for new exchanges.
Introduction
Nurses and midwives provide the majority of clinical care around
the world. Their roles and responsibilities are substantial in advancing
the global mandate to provide health care for all and universal health
coverage. The health care environment has rapidly moved from a na-
tional to global focus, influenced by increased technological advances,
record migrations of people and increased disparities, necessitating a
framework for global equity. Nursing and midwifery education needs to
prepare students to assume broader roles in the global environment
with competencies that include a rigorous understanding of the orga-
nization of health systems and access to resources, leadership skills, and
advocacy for the most marginalized populations to ensure equitable
health care as a fundamental human right (Wilson et al., 2016). The
Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery 2016–2020, re-
cently released by the World Health Organization, states: “Nurses… are

Community Nursing Practice Model
The prevalence of illness among poor urban and rural populations increase the demand for critical care services. However, there is a shortage for physicians who can take up responsibilities in the community health sector. Among the efforts in place to strengthen the human resource is the growing interest to have nurses in advance practices participate inpatient care at the community health level. By applying the community, nursing practice model advanced practice nurses are better prepared to deliver care and outcomes to patients in poor communities.
The Community Nursing Practice Model
The community nursing model plays an essential role in ensuring that less privileged communities can access better healthcare by providing a framework for community nurses to focus on entire populations that have similar health concerns or characteristics. For example, a society where there are reproductive health issues, nurses applying this model in such a community will be able to know what the needs of the community are as far as reproductive health is concerned (Maclaine, 2014).
The model considers all levels of prevention, which include primary prevention whereby the advanced practice nurses promote health and protect against threats to health in the community. For example, carrying out awareness in the community on sexually transmitted diseases and distributing latex condoms in the community (Maclaine, 2014). Another level of prevention is secondary prevention, which involves the community nurses’ practitioners detecting and treating problems at the early stage of detection so that the health problem does not cause serious problems or affect others. The last level of prevention involves the community nurse practitioner preventing existing problems from getting worse.
The MSN Essential
Clinical prevention and population health are one of the MSN essential that is relevant to the community nursing practice. The underlying notion of this MSN essential is recognizing that masters prepared nurse applies and integrates a good organizational, patient-centered and culturally appropriate idea in planning to deliver and managing of clinical prevention and community care services to individuals and families (AACN, 2011). Under this essential, it is well elaborated that a master’s degree level nurse should be able to synthesize broad social determinants of health and data from epidemiology to design and deliver clinical interventions to the communities in need while using relevant strategies.
In summary,the model has transcended values of respect, care, and wellness, which are essential in primary health care. The CNP and MSN essential provide a framework for nurses who want to practice in the community health sector and especially for advanced care nurses. Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).

Nurses have to observe and celebrate 12th May every year with different theme in order: oTo “change the picture” oTo reinforce how a skilled nurse response can transform lives, families, communities and indeed countries. oNurses need to model this message not just on this day but from this day onwards.
- 5. 5 WHO; “Investing in nursing can make a difference in achieving MDGs”. The nursing workforce is the largest group of health professionals and a vital resource for the health of the population Nursing research has shown that nurses’ quality of care makes a big contribution to the health outcomes of patients in the short and long term.
- 6. 6 The WHO progress report (2013b) describes achievements adopted by the WHA to strengthen nursing and midwifery services. Nurses at every level should contribute to making a positive difference in their work environment.
- 7. 7 Nurses need to acknowledge their personal responsibility to initiate progress. Nurses have to engage with research and develop innovative models that will contribute evidence of the effectiveness of nursing care and inform health policy makers.
- 8. Workforce flexibility 8 It is an additional strategy towards addressing nurse supply shortages Developing educational programs to support nurses to move from one clinical setting, or area of practice, during their careers would increase the current level of flexibility in the nurse workforce.
- 9. Workforce planning 9 Planning a sufficient number of nurses to meet the population’s demand for care is crucial to delivering excellence in nursing care. The supply of health workers, including nurses, must be keenly sensitive to the needs of the population it serves. Evidence-based strategies enable workforce planning to be undertaken in order to meet the population’s need for care (IND 2014, p.15).
