This document discusses the history and future of interoperability across cloud computing platforms, also known as "Intercloud". It summarizes that:
1) Intercloud connectivity and federation faces similar challenges to those that the early Internet faced with proprietary networks and solutions.
2) Standards organizations like IEEE and efforts like the Global Intercloud Testbed aim to foster open protocols and arrangements to allow clouds to interconnect and resources to be shared, just as TCP/IP and other protocols enabled the Internet.
3) An example use case of Intercloud is a mobile application accessing cloud resources across providers during travel by using a "roaming" arrangement between the home and local clouds.
