Installing a shallow horizontal CP groundbed in West Georgia

A 44 meter long, 2.3 meter deep trench was excavated in West Georgia in December 2016 for installing a shallow horizontal impressed current cathodic protection groundbed. 30 manganese dioxide/titanium alloy anodes were evenly spaced along the trench which was backfilled with coke breeze and soft soil. Individual anode cables were spliced to a ring main cable, which was connected to a 48V-15A rectifier to provide cathodic protection to the structure.

- 1. Installing a shallow horizontal impressed current CP groundbed in West Georgia December 2016
- 2. 44 m long, 2.3 m deep and 0.6 m wide trench is excavated.
- 3. Upon completion of trenching , 0.15 m high, coke breeze padding is laid.
- 4. 30 nos. MMO/Ti anodes are inspected and equally spaced along the trench.
- 5. Upon installation, anodes are backfilled with 0.15 m high, coke breeze.
- 6. Soft soil is then used to backfill the active section and 35 mm2 ring cable is laid.
- 7. Each individual 25 mm2 anode cable tail is spliced onto the ring cable.
- 8. Warning tape is laid and native soil reinstated over the groundbed.
- 9. Groundbed resistance to earth is measured and verified to be acceptable.
- 10. Ring cable is spliced to 35 mm2 positive cable, that is run to 48 V – 15 A rectifier.
