The Bowthorpe Cable Spiker is used to prove that a disconnected cable is dead before work begins. It comprises a hand pump connected by a hose to a hydraulic ram with a diamond-shaped chisel that is placed around the cable. An independent earth cable is also included. The operator places the spiker around the cable, connects the earth cable, and uses the pump to drive the chisel into the cable to test if it is dead. Proper safety equipment and procedures must be followed when using the high voltage equipment.
