The French Paradox Of Cholesterol And Saturated Fat Diet
The French paradox is a slogan which was first used in the 1980 s to summarize the
observation of low Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) rates, as shown in figure 1, of
the French despite their dangerously high intake of dietary cholesterol and saturated
fat (FerriГЁres, 2004). The French acquire approximately 38% of their energy from
fat with 16% of that being saturated fat. This is in contradiction to the widely known
and proved hypothesis that a high consumption of fat is a major factor in CHD. This
paradox implies a significant possibility: There is an additional factor in the French
diet that alleviates the risks associated with a high fat diet. Ryan Fujiu believes that it
is the regular consumption of red winethat diminishes the dangers of a high fat diet.
He states that: The health benefits of red wine have come to light in recent years.
Hope is on the horizon, and it may be in your glass ref. This topic is highly
controversial as there are also detriments to the consumption of alcohol. There has
been much debate about this issue for the last two decades. In order to make a
plausible decision on Ryan s statement, this report will look at the advantages and
disadvantages of red wine by analysing chemicals present in wine and their effects
on the human body. During the wine making process various chemicals are added,
so it is necessary to look at the wine making process first to come up with a plausible
decision for Ryan s statement.
Wine making is an 8 step process as
Essay on Economic Analysis of The U.S. 2001-2003
Economic Analysis of The U.S. 2001 2003
Economics have many indicators to describe how it runs. The indicators can show if
the economy has improved or declined. The economic indicators that will be focused
on in this analysis of the United States economy from 2001 2003 will be the
consumer price index, the imports and exports, the unemployment rate, and finally the
gross domestic product. Now while most may know the meanings of the previously
stated indicators, for those who don t, they remain useless unless defined. To begin
with, these indicators will have to be defined in full to aid in understanding the
analysis in more detail. It will be after that that the actual analysis of the economy of

Obviously unemployed rate is defined as the fraction of the labor force that is
unemployed . To define the unemployed is important as well, because it refers to
those that have no job, but are actively looking for work, not to those who are not
working and are uninterested in searching or getting a job . The reason that
unemployment is so important in determining the economy s success is because it is
intertwined with the gross domestic product, as in when the gross domestic product
falls, unemployment is increased, and when it rises, there is a decrease in
unemployment . To make what is being explained clearer, when there is
unemployment, production is down; therefore there is less money and goods
produced out of the economy. This is how unemployment relates as well.
The last indicator to be defined is probably the most the important of them all, and
that is the gross domestic product. The gross domestic product is defined as the
total market value of all the final goods and services produced within an economy
in a given year . There are two types of gross domestic product, real and nominal.
Real GDP is adjusted to how prices have changed, as nominal GDP is the current
price as it is calculated . There is so very much that goes into the gross domestic
product that in this analysis only the percent change from the years will be shown as
important. A percent that is positive is obviously
Relation Between Architecture And The Environment.this...
An architect cannot build a consistent and stable structure without knowing the
relationship between architecture and the environment. This topic should be discussed
on various angles. One of them is the aesthetical point of view, and the other is the
human intervention in nature. The former is essentially an artistic debate and a
generic timeless topic since the beginning of architectural practices. The other one is
a more contemporary issue. In a broader aspect, this topic isn t only the architect s
interest, but also is an issue of engineers, scientists and even social scientist s; and
yet it can even extend to global warmingconcerns. For this reason, let us firstly start
and find out the most current dispute entitled as humanintervention in nature.
Humans since their very first existence have been in a big struggle against the
nature. However, they shape the nature to suffice their needs and in essence adapt
themselves accordingly into the conditions given by the Mother Nature. Over time
nature has resisted to this human endeavor in every possible way it can and tried not
to surrender humans. No matter how strong this resistance is; humans somehow
found a way to break it down with their inborn skills that they managed to develop in
time. This can be regarded as a seamless dance between these two enormous forces.
As the nature manifested itself as an obstacle where humans accomplished to push it
away, this struggle shaped the way in which humans developed a way of

Since the initial post on August 30th 2014, the Facebook page Classical Art Memes
revolutionized the way that 1.9 million followers view both the internet meme and
classical art. The page is so popular that the manager of Classical Art Memes started
a crowdfunding campaign to continue producing high quality memes in addition to
their other commitments in life. Classical Art Memes does not discriminate which
pieces of art are used, satirizing pieces from ancient art to modern art, though
mostly focusing on Medieval and Renaissance pieces. These memes are mostly very
specific phrases that describe the piece of art in a more modern context, but some
are viral memes that have been reproduced with other images including pieces of art.

The word meme was coined in 1976 by biologist Richard Dawkins in his book The
Selfish Gene. The word is meant to describe something that is transmitted in any
way other than genetically. According to Dawkins, the word meme isn t
necessarily intended to be used exclusively for scientific purposes. Examples of
memes, Dawkins writes, are tunes, ideas, catch phrases, clothes, fashions, ways of
making pots or of building arches. Just as genes propagate themselves in the gene
pool by leaping from body to body via sperms or eggs, so memes propagate
themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in
the broad sense, can be called imitation. Perhaps, if Dawkins book had been
published after the advent of the internet, he would have mentioned the internet as
a place for information to travel in the form of memes. In 1996, Richard Brodie, a
contemporary of Dawkins further expanded Dawkins definition in his book Virus of
the Mind: The New Science of the Meme. Brodie s succinct definition states: A
meme is an idea, the kind of complex idea that forms itself into a distinct memorable
unit. It is spread by vehicles that are physical manifestations of the meme. As the
internet was still in its infantile stage, it s unlikely that Brodie knew what the idea of
a meme would become, yet his expanded definition of the meme better
United States And The Modern World
Every minute, 30 football field sized sections of forests are cut down and that is just
from illegal harvesting ( Corruption and the Environment ). The modern world has
become so reliant on wood products that at the current rate of deforestation there will
soon be no forests left to enjoy. Governments refrain from making their clear cutting
plans public to avoid scrutiny. With governments very unlikely to change their
policies, unless monetary gain is guaranteed, it is on the people of the United States
and the rest of the world to reinforce positive environmental consciousness. If people
were to become aware of the consequences to living extravagant lifestyles, more
natural resources would be conserved for future generations.

Trees are becoming a scarcer resource everyday, thus planting trees not only saves
homeowners money, but also positively affects the environment around them. In
order to create a healthier, more financially stable society, and to reduce unnecessary
energy emissions from properties, homeowners, realtors and developers must
consolidate to reduce home sizes and create larger, more environmentally sustainable
outdoor landscapes.
Since the inflation of the United States dollar continues to rise every year, housing
prices in relation to the peak of the market in 2006 are at a standstill, or even are
decreasing in many cities. The housing market has fully recovered from the
devastation of 2006. Currently, homes in San Francisco are worth, on average, almost
15% more than in 2008. Unfortunately, due to inflation the majority of the value in
the housing market has decreased since the mortgage fallout, by 19.4% ( American
House Prices ). The housing market peaked just before the collapse of 2006, mainly
because banks became greedy and did not check the majority of their clients credit
scores. As the time passed, banks soon realized that their plans were not unfolding as
planned. The Washington Post estimated that at the time of the fallout 1 in 5
mortgage holders had below average credit. In many banks, whole empires were
controlled by subprime mortgages . This meant homebuyers who had poor credit
scores dictated the

Analysis Of The Boys In The Boat
Daniel James Brown manages to awe and inspire readers in his book The Boys in
the Boat, which describes the hardships a row crew from Washington underwent to
make it to the 1936 Olympics. The story of the nine rowers on the Washington
crew teaches lessons about inner confidence, trust, dedication, and the hope that
can be found during even the most difficult times. I learned while reading that
being the underdog doesn t mean you re destined to fail. Readers see that despite
the hardships and many disadvantages the Washington crew faced, their dedication
allowed them to beat the odds and inspire an entire nation. Boys in the Boat tends
to focus on one rower and his internal struggles in particular Joe Rantz, who became
an indispensable member to the team despite his humble beginnings. He suffered
through a difficult childhood and was described as poor as a church mouse (129).
He deals with the shame and embarrassment his financial situation puts him in he
wore his ragged sweater to practice almost everyday, and the boys still teased him
continuously for it (91). For a row team to be successful, every member must work
in unison and have trust in each other. Readers can see how difficult this is for Joe
at first knowing his past and internal struggles makes you wonder how he could
possibly learn to depend on the other rowers. But throughout the book we see
character growth in Joe. He learns from his mentors, begins to trust his teammates and
gains confidence in

Other valuable uses include vetting of new partners, diagnosing sources of conflict,
matching personality to particular tasks or initiatives while also taking the
guesswork out of the hiring process (Neville, 2013). Current thinking in personality
assessments converges on the idea that most personality characteristics reflect the
five broad characteristics of the Five Factor Model extroversion, agreeableness,
conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness (The Science of Personality,
2015). Personality tests are typically less likely to differ in results by gender and
race than other tests, can be administered via paper and pencil or computerized
methods to large groups easily, cost effectively and do not necessarily require skilled
administrators (SIOP). In 2012 thirty five percent of Human Resources around the
world reported that they use personality inventories (Gray, 2015). Hogan Personality
Inventory The standardized test I have chosen to analyze is The Hogan Personality

organizational settings and I am likely to encounter it in the field. According to
Axford, S. (MMY, 1998) the test manual includes an accurate test description and
clearly indicates its purpose and a design that is practical for use within the
organization. LoBello (MMY, 1998) describes the manual as user

Statue Of Hercules Greek Art Influence
The Greek culture and artistic influence traveled deeper than any other on the Roman
Empire. Within a remarkably brief period, Greek artists developed focused and
distinctive ideals of human beauty and architectural design that continues to be a
profound influence today. Greek art was self aware, and self confident, developing a
concept of human supremacy and responsibility that required a new visual
expression. This is in stark contrast to ancient Egypt, where permanence and
continuity maintained stable artistic conventions for nearly 3000 years. By the end of
the first century BCE, the influence of Greek painting, sculpture, and architecture had
spread to communities of emerging Roman Empire. Roman patrons and artists
maintained Greek art and customs into Early Christian and Byzantine times. So
strong in fact that Romans urged to emulate the work of the Greek artists whom
came before them, replicating Greek artworks much like the Statue of Hercules. This

numerous copies of Greek sculpture commissioned by Hadrian, who loved Greek
culture. Emperor Hadrian was so fond of learning Greek literature that he was

Financial Statements And Other Reports
Companies gather various information, including financial statements and other
reports as a way to track their performance compared to past years. This information
is also used to communicate with stakeholders about various topics depending on the
reporting style. One type of such reporting is a business unit reporting where
organizations gather information about separate divisions of the company to see if
each division is functioning properly. There are separate accounts for each segment,
so the company can examine if each division is operating at a loss or profit. By
creating separate accounts, businessreporting provides accurate reports on a company

Windstream will continue to benefit by focusing on each business unit and the
strategies that lend to the most amount of growth in each particular division. In
Windstream s practice, consumers and ILEC small businesses were designated as a
specific area of interest. Due to this interest, it became one of the four business unit
divisions that Windstream focuses on. It is important to designate that this does not
include the CLEC Small Business division as the goals and strategies differ between
the two categories. The operational strategy for Consumer and SMB is to invest in
new opportunities in order for the division to grow. Some of the strengths this area
tends to have that can be utilized for the best opportunities include a generally high
profit margin, an attractive rural market, and the opportunity to generate significant
cash flow. A few of the larger opportunities include introducing premium internet
speeds to the public, offering kinetic IP TV, and connecting American Fund 2

forecasted to enable one million locations, including 380 thousand by the end of
2015. This will aid in increasing the current number of customers, especially in the
rural market area. Another strategy to increase market share is the new IP TV being

Economic Crisis
Stabilization in the Wake of Economic Crisis Perhaps the most significant reason
Pittsburgh was able to recover from the collapse of steel was the decision, made
early on by city officials and local developers, to seek out new industries rather than
cling to the vestiges of the old. Beginning in 1981, the Allegheny Conference (ACC),
a non profit coalition of local business and political leaders, made economic
diversification their primary goal. The conference established a committee whose
sole task was to promote new industries. The committee s chairman said, at the outset,
we must diversify...this time we must build new industries, new jobs. Over the next
decade, the ACC helped secure financing for development projects throughout the...

Symbolic of the success of that initiative, in 1990, Pittsburgh succeeded in capturing
a $370 M investment in from the Sony Corporation to build their two newest
television manufacturing plants. Overall, these measures to stabilize Pittsburgh s
economy were remarkably successful. Between 1982 and 1990, Pittsburgh s
employment rate dropped 12.6% (from 17% to 4.6%). For the remainder of the
decade, the unemployment rate hovered В±0.5% compared to the national average.
Thus, the successes of the late 1980s gave Pittsburgh had the breathing room to
pursue longer lasting, economically sustainable reform. New Pittsburgh (1986
Present) Much of the success of the mid/late 1980s were the result of massive
economic stimulation measures rather than organic growth. Therefore, after the city
recovered from the collapse of the early 1980s, city officials and local developers
continued their plans for further economic development. City officials used the
successes of the late 1980s as a springboard to create the highly diversified economy
necessary for sustained economic growth. Since 1990, the focus of economic growth
in Pittsburgh has been in three largely codependent sectors: education, healthcare, and
high technology. Higher Education Since 1990, Pittsburgh s institutions of higher
education have largely driven its economic
Darfur Is Dying
The game I have chosen to analyze named Darfur is Dying. It is a flash based
browser game about the crisis in Darfur, western Sudan. The game begins with the

According to Beuer and Bente (2010), a serious game is a game which its primary

Furthermore, participants also reported high levels of engagement through gaming,
which lead to active discussions after play. They wanted to know the location of
Darfur, what was happening, and most importantly, why genocide was taking

reported that Darfur is Dying motivated people to get involved in political crisis
addressed because action items are embedded within the game such as contacting
people via emails which invite them to play and be informed about Darfur, sending
messages to the U.S government or petitioning U.S Congress. Accordingly, Ruiz
(2006, cited in Neys Janz, 2010) also revealed that her game predominantly aimed
at inspiring people to take action to prevent the killing and suffering in Sudan. In
conclusion, Darfur is Dying is a serious game which involves the players in political
engagement. Not only has it raised public awareness of the killing Darfur, but also
empowered game audiences to take action to stop the political
Nuclear Power Supplies A Significant Part Of Current...
MOX Title
Background:
Nuclear power supplies a significant portion of current energy demands. One of the
newer advances in nuclear fuel is Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel. MOX is a mixture of
UO2 and PuO2. Both of these starting materials can be recovered from spent
traditional nuclear fuel [1]. As such, MOX provides a method for reducing waste
generated during the operation of a nuclear reactor. MOX fuel is currently in use in
Europe, Russia and Japan [2]. The United States is in the process of developing next
generation nuclear reactors which can employ MOX. Due to the importance of
MOX fuel, important research is currently being to both understand the principles
governing MOX, and how to enhance its performance. MOX fuel is comprised of
UO2 and PuO2. The UO2 is acquired either from naturally occurring uranium oxide,
or recovered from the spent fuel of a traditional nuclear reactor. Plutonium metal is
produced by the U 238 during operation of the nuclear reactor [1]. The Pu must
then be converted to PuO2. The first step in producing PuO2 is to dissolve the
recovered Pu in HNO3 HF to get Pu(NO3)4. Once the Pu(NO3)4 is generated, a
few different methods can be used to acquire PuO2. The most commercially used
method involves the precipitation of plutonium oxalate. The Pu(NO3)4 is
conditioned with hydrogen peroxide to produce Pu(lV). Next, an excess of oxalic
acid is added to reduce the solubility. The oxalate is then left to decompose to oxide
which can then be filtered and dried
Morning Sickness Experienced By Pregnant Women
Morning sickness is a term to describe the ill feeling experienced by pregnant
women who are in their first trimester of pregnancy. The ill feeling is better defined
as food aversions, nausea and vomiting. It is termed morning sickness because many
women experience it upon rising (Profet, 1995); but in reality, morning sickness
could happen at any time of the day. So the term morning sickness may be a
misnomer. There are many other terms used including nauseaand vomiting in
pregnancy(NVP) rather than morning sickness (Flaxman Sherman, 2000). The term
NVP will be used throughout this essay. Generally, everyone has a toxin tolerance
threshold to detect level of toxicity in their blood; and if this threshold is exceeded,

Another similar study on spices by Flaxman and Sherman (2000) showed that
spices have anti microbial properties and are commonly used in hot climate
countries because unrefrigerated food are prone to food spoilage faster. Although
Billing and Sherman (1998) agreed that spices help to maintain palatability of food
besides enhancing its flavour, but Flaxman and Sherman (2000) suggested that too
much of spices may be harmful as well. For example, ingestion of large amounts of
capsaicin causes high toxicity in blood; this is even worse in pregnant women as
their toxin tolerance thresholds are lowered (Flaxman Sherman, 2000). So, certain
spices could cause NVP when they are consumed in large amounts. Also, excessive
amounts of caffeine causes spontaneous abortions (Weathersbee, Olsen and Lodge,
1977) and through NVP, pregnant women will tend to reduce intake of caffeine.
Food aversions cause reduced nutrient intake in pregnant women as they experience
weight loss during their first trimester (Tierson, Olsen and Hook, 1986). Although this
may protect the embryos, it may increase cardiovascular and behavioural diseases
when they are grown up (Watkins et al. 2008). The maternal threshold for tolerating
toxicity is lowered during the first trimester; it will then increase during the second
and third trimesters (Profet, 1995). Profet (1995) explained that the lowering of toxin

Bigger Than Life By Nicholas Ray
Nicholas Ray s Bigger Than Life is a story of an American family man who tries to
have it all and fails because of his addiction. In an effort to visually portray this,
Ray largely abandons conventional Cinemascope practices and tends to revert to
the paradigms of the Academy ratio. Rather than using Cinemascope to highlight
spectacle, Ray films a small family melodrama. Instead of splitting the screen into
thirds and adjusting the mise en scГЁne to visually fill up the screen, Ray uses
close ups, single person shots, and symmetry. He frequently divides the screen in
two at the center, essentially treating each side as an Academy ratio film. Since
Ray focuses less on clotheslining actors, he is able to bring the audience closer to
understand the psychology of Ed Avery (and physcially closer to him than most
Cinemascope films would go). The sequence towards the end of film is of
paramount importance Ray takes the tension, anger, cruelty, and derangement that
has been building throughout the film and raises it to a high enough level that Ed is
willing to kill his own son. To get this across, Ray uses composition to show Ed as
isolated, sinister, and dangerous. Two of the scenes in particular from the sequence
deviate from his regular techniques, as he stages the family in a single frame to
highlight the growing distance between them all. Throughout the film, Ray used
close ups to show Ed s mental state; in this sequence, Ray largely abandons that
technique Ed s state of mind

Introduction The Book of Acts is a literary masterpiece filled with stories of miracles,
faith, chronicles of the growth of Christianity, Holy Spirit encounters, and stories of
supernatural conversions. It is one of the main books of the Bible studied to learn
about the power of the Holy Spirit and God s ability to use anything and anyone for
His purpose. The call of Saul was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There has been much discussion surrounding the name change from Saul to Paul
beginning in Acts chapter 13. It is shown throughout the New Testament after Saul
s conversion that he called himself Paul and only used the name Saul when he
referred to incidents that occurred prior to his conversion. Other commentaries
attribute the name change to Saul s desire to not share the same name with wicked
King Saul from the Old Testament who persecuted David, Jesus ancestor. Many
significant people in the Bible were referred to by different names such as Jesus
disciples Matthew (Levi), Simon (Peter), Abraham (Abram), Sarah (Sarai), Jacob
(Israel). The Bible does not offer a reason why Saul changed his name to Paul or
indicate whether it was inspired by God or not. The timing of the change of name
leads us to believe it was because of his conversion and desire to abandon his old
nature and walk in the calling God placed on his life.
The Damascus Experience The account of Saul s conversion is such an important
theme that it is reported in three different areas of the book (Acts 9:1 19, Acts 22:4
16 and Acts 26:9 19). Even though these 3 verses differ in the amount of detail they
contain, they all focus on different aspects of the miraculous encounter. Charles
Pope Gregory VII and King Henry IV
The investiture controversy was conflict between church and state. Those days,
Henry was most powerful king in Europe, but Gregory willing to give him problems
and wanted to dominate the state. Gregory was threatened the king, but the problem
was that he was without any military power and this made him vulnerable. At that
time bishops were important political figure and the main issue of conflict was bishop
s appointment because the Popeand the king both wanted to make bishops in their
favor. Moreover, Pope decided to put an end to civil authority over the church. He
declared only the church had the right to appoint, transfer, or remove bishops, but
King began to appoint his own bishops.
When the Saxon war was going defectively, the king made an advisory committee
to advise him to talk Gregory .Pope assumed this favorable sign that the king would
come and talk to him before the coronation. Henry won a military victory in 1075
in Saxon war and he had begun to restore royal authority on winning places. He had
not gone to talk with Pope Gregory but appointed imperial candidate s arch bishop.
He had not taken any advice from the pope and previous bishops who were
appointed by the pope. This made the pope furious so, he wrote admonish to King
Henry.
According to the pope s letter, pope was founded by God and he had the authority
to restore all bishops and king. He wrote in his letter king must be obedient to the
church. Gregory wanted to be more powerful, so he wrote a

Time Is Time Essay
THE TRUTH ABOUT TIME
The strongest of all the warriors are these two time and patience: Leo Tolstoy
TIME IS LIFE:
First I will elaborate on the concept of time. Time is the most valuable resource that
any person can possess. Time equals life.
I know that this sounds simple but most people don t realize the significance of either
time or life. That is, your time in this world starts from the moment you came in this
world and it ends the moment you stop breathing.
So, what is meant by the statement that your time is over it actually means your life
is over. Therefore, time is life.
Significance of time in relation to life:
Time like any other resource is depleting very fast, therefore, its up to the individual
himself that he utilizes it both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dimensions/classification of time:
One important thing to remember especially for people who believe that time is
always at their disposal is that time wasted will never come back. This signifies the
importance that time can be explained in three ways: past, present and future.
While remembering the past or dreaming about the future is good, sometimes, the
best way to make use of your time is living in the present or living in the moment.
You see that you can do nothing about your past, its already gone plus it will never
come back but the next best thing to do is learn lessons from your past, whether it be
learning from your mistakes or learning from your failures.
Build your future, realize your dreams:
Also, stop worrying about the future, nobody in this universe has control over their
future plus nobody knows where they will end up or what will happen tomorrow.
But still that doesn t mean that you forget your dreams, your future; what it means
is that you build your future, one day at a time. So, if you want to be successful
plus live the life of your dreams, focus your energies by putting your heart and soul
into your work on daily
Abortion Debate
Your Opinions Ends Where My Choice Begins
In the past years, abortion has been one of the biggest topics of discussion. Many
people of different backgrounds views abortion or expulsion of a fetus to be murder.
Why should anyone who has not faced this decision voice their opinion on a situation
that does not affect them? A woman is entitled to make her own decisions regarding
to her body. Abortionshould be justified because it is her body, she has to live with
the outcome, and she might not be mentally or emotionally stable to care for a child.
What if it was you, your wife, mother, daughter, sister, or a woman that is very
important to you having to face this? Would you be Pro Life then? Every human

There are reasons for this being. One example is a woman who is pregnant before
prison might choose abortion because it would be emotional for her to give it to
DHS or to someone of next kin but not trustworthy. She would be emotional
knowing that she is not in her child life, that her child might not be protected, or
that a child will grow up struggling and might end up in prison just like her. Another
example could be a woman who is not mentally stable to carry a child and feels her
child life would be at the danger if she was to bring him or her into the world. Can

Essay about J.D. Salinger s Development of Holden
Caulfield
Many authors put their own life as inspiration towards their works and characters.
J.D. Salinger s character development of Holden Caulfield has been affected by
Salinger s complications in his school life, devastating past relationships, and
overwhelming traumatic events during his pre The Catcher in the Rye adulthood.
J.D. Salinger s school life had many significant events that are shown through
Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye. In the novel, the 17 year old Holden
Caulfield leaves Pencey Prep. In chapter one, Holden states ...I d just got back from
New York with the fencing team. I was the goddam manager of the fencing team.
Very big deal. We d gone in to New York that morning for this fencing meet with

When Salinger attended McBurney School, he tried to conform so he can fit (one
way was calling himself Jerry). While at this school, he also acted in plays and
wrote the school s newspaper. This is shown through Holden as he doesn t try to
conform (which could be representing Salinger s regret to try and conform), hates
phoniness (as acting as a character [for example: in a play] is considered being
phony), and likes writing (as shown in the beginning of chapter one as he tells the
audience his story and how he admires his writer brother, D.B.). Salinger himself
stated, My boyhood was very much the same as that of the boy in the book, and it
was a great relief telling people about it (interview by Shirlie Blaney). Salinger s
many failed relationships in his lives, from his parents to love interests, are hinted
throughout Holden s life and his character. Salinger s father was from a Jewish
descent while his mother was from a Catholic descent; however Salinger didn t
know about this until his bar mitzvah. Salinger had problematic issues with his
father like how his father basically disapproved of his son in general (for example:
participation in plays). It was even described that J.D. skipped his father s funeral
and later stopped eating meat (stated by www.nndb.com). Salinger s relationship with
his parents were broken because of the trust broken by his mother and the

Existential counselling is a philosophical form of counselling which addresses the
situation of a person s life and situates the person firmly within the predictable
challenges of the human condition. Existential counselling considers human living to
take place within four dimensions: physical, social, psychological and spiritual. It
shows each of these dimensions to be constituted like a force field, within which
predictable paradoxes, tensions and dilemmas play out. Human beings can learn to
deal with these tensions and conflicts more effectively by facing up to the negatives
as well as the positives of their lives, including the tensions of life and death, love and
hate, strength and weakness and meaning and absurdity. Best known... Show more

We may even choose actions that cause harm to ourselves or to others. Reflecting
on these behaviours, with the help of a psychologist, gives us insight into the
reasons we chose these actions and helps us to learn from our mistakes and make
better choices in the future. You do not need to be an existentialist to benefit from
existential therapy; you need only a desire to be happier and a willingness to
reflect upon how your choices are part of the solution. Existential Therapy is an
approach to counselling that helps us to understand ourselves, other people and
the world we all inhabit together. Existential Therapy helps people to build
confidence that they are making good choices. Existential Therapy is not reserved
solely for people who suffer from severe psychological problems; it is for everyone
who is having trouble making a good decision when they experience the kind of
challenges issued by life. Existential Therapy provides an opportunity to explore the
world including the dreams, fantasies and spiritual dimensions of our existence.
Talking about it helps to identify dilemmas, develop a strategy to deal with them
and then grow from the experience. Irvin David Yalom, M.D. (born June 13, 1931),

I...My chosen topic is Gay Rights more specifically marriage equality. Public
opinion in the U.S. shows the majority support for the legal recognition of same sex
marriages. This issue is more likely to be supported by women and people under 50.
My thesis is that marriage equality a civil right, rights we are born with as a citizen
of the U.S. which the government cannot interfere with or suppress. (Lecture Notes
8/27). Over the past decade, marriage equality has become an even larger and more
controversial issue. The issue of same sex marriage equality is being supported today
in 33 states by the means of laws, court cases and social changes in our society.
II... The issue of equal legal right to marry for same sex couples first surfaced in
court around the 1970s but was immediately rejected. In the 1990s several
California lawyer s organizations supported a proposed bill to permit same sex
marriage. In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Defense of Marriage
Act, which defines marriage as being strictly between a man and a woman, and
expresses that states do not have to recognize same sex marriages that occur in other
states. In 1997, Hawaii enacts a domestic partnership legislation with limited rights
for same sex partners. That same year, anti same sex marriage laws were in place in
12 states. In Baker v. State (1999), the Vermont Supreme Court concludes that
Analysis Of The Kings Of Summer
Two components that have an immense impact on the quality and caliber of a film
are the editing and sound found within the film. These two aspects alone can make or
break a film. In the film The Kings of Summer, directed by Jordan Vogt Roberts, these
two elements collaborate to highlight certain emotions and key moments in the films
plot. Some of the sub elements of these two components that can easily be identified
within the film include the flashforward, the flashback, both nondiegetic and diegetic
sound, semi diegetic sound, graphic matching and voice offs. Within the film The
Kings Of Summer, editing and sound are methodically and tactfully utilized in
order to produce a film that is both entertaining and meaningful for the audience.
Two of the most prominent aspects of editing that can be identified within this
film are the flashforward and the flashback. At the commencement of the film, a
flashforward is employed. It shows drums being played in a forest by the three
characters that were yet to be introduced to the audience. Then the scene quickly
cuts to the main character, Joe, in the shower at his house. This flashforward is
used in order to provide the audience with an idea of what is to come in the not so
distant future of the film. Another flashforward is utilized when Joe, Patrick, and
Biaggio are living in the forest. This flashforward shows Joe and the female lead,
Kelly, in the woods. It portrays the two in a romantic light, and includes a
confession from Kelly that she wants to stay and live in the forest with Joe. This
flashforward, unlike the previous example, does not come true. However, it is used
to portray the deep emotions of Joe, and his longing for female companionship.
These emotions become relevant when Kelly falls for Joe s friend Patrick instead of
him. During the conclusion of the film, a flashback is employed so the audience can
relive the previous events that occurred within the film. When Biaggio is in the
hospital, a flashback reminds the audience of when Joe and Patrick first entered the
forest, at the onset of their adventure. This flashback brings the audience back to a
happier and lighter point in the story line. In the film The Kings of Summer,

Portability Of The Electrical Hardware Housing Structure...
Portability
Many properties of our prototype contributed to its portability. The electrical
hardware housing structure for our prototype measured in at 7.375 x 6.375 x 5.000 ,
which allowed for a small yet fully functional device. These relatively small
dimensions allowed us to easily transport our prototype without concern of having to
make accommodations for its size. Our prototype was composed of simple PVC
plastic sheets. We cut these sheets to the desired dimensions and attached them using
bent aluminum sheet metal. We used 6 32 threaded nuts and bolts to fasten the metal
angle brackets to the PVC sheets. This combination of materials and fasteners used to
create the housing structure for our electrical components made for a strong, yet
lightweight prototype. This strength allowed for our structure to be free standing and
added a component of durability without adding to the size or weight significantly.
Also, this housing structure contained all of our wires and components meaning that
there were no extraneous pieces protruding from the structure. This uniform structure
kept components from getting snagged by outside materials during transport. By
producing the prototype from these materials at the given dimensions, we were able
to create a prototype structure that displayed durability, strength, and functionality
while remaining quite portable.

How Did Tycho Brahe Contribute To The World
Imagine a world where we didn t know about how the stars and the planets worked.
We didn t know where they were and what they did. That s what the world would be
like without Tycho Brahe. He created many inventions that were more accurate than
ever. He ran an observatory until he stopped working and would share info with
other astronomers. His studies helped make other discoveries possible. He also had a
great education but he didn t even study astronomy! Tycho Brahewas born on
December 14, 1546 in Scania, which was part of Denmarkat the time but is now in
Sweden. He was the oldest of his siblings Otto Brahe and Beatte Brahe. When he was
only thirteen his uncle sent him to the university of Copenhagen. There he studied
law and philosophy. While he was studying at Copenhagen there was a partial eclipse

This is where he began to learn a lot about astronomy. He got a hold of astronomy
books and instruments. He hid the items from his tutor during the day and would
stay up all night looking at the stars and read his books. Then on August 17, 1563
Tycho was observing the stars and noticed that Saturn and Jupiter passed very
close to each other. Later his tutor stopped tutoring him and his uncle died of
pneumonia. Tycho then left Leipzig and went to Germany. When Tycho went to
Germany he met some amateur astronomers who were very rich. They studied
together for a long time. Their problem was they didn t have a very accurate way
to observe the sky. This led them to make a large quadrant of a circle with a 19
foot radius! It took them over 20 men to build it! The quadrant was set so they
could make observations through an open window. They also had several clocks all
being used one after another to make the observations as precise as they possibly
could. Then in 1570, after spending years in Germany with fellow astronomers, he

Vanishing Middle Class Essay

11 July 2017 The Increase in Income and the Vanishing Middle class The majority of
the the U.S. population identify themselves as being within the middle or working
class. The socioeconomic group between the lower and upper classes. is much
smaller than most think and is starting to decline. The large increase in income have
reshaped the American middle class that most claim to be part of. Today s higher
income of the American middle class family comes from the two parent income.
This income is higher of those of past generations, however, over the past
generation, the increase in income for the median earning family have not resulted
in an improved lifestyle. The reason for life not improving for America s middle
class is often misconstrued with over consumption or purchasing of unneeded
items and services, but these activities are not the case for the middle class non
improved quality of life. Revolving debt and the large increase in life s fixed
expenses such as mortgage, health care, and child care, these factors are the main
reasons for the increase in income for middle class families not resulting in an
improved life quality.
In the article the Vanishing Middle Class , the author Elizabeth Warren explains why
and how America s middle class is facing many hardships today. These hardships are
often linked to overconsumption of material items such as technology, home
appliances and clothing.

A Gap of Sky
English essay A Gap of Sky
Amalie Thomsen
Introduction:
The title of the short story is A Gap of Sky and is written by Anna Hope in 2008.
Anna Hope is an English actress and writer. She is from Manchester and was
educated at Wadham College, Oxford. The short story is fiction, but could still take
place in real life. The main theme is identity formation.
Analysis:
The story is written with a 3rd persons view: Ellie reaches a hand out [...] She takes
the glass, stumbles forward... The narrator therefor has an omniscient point of view,
and knows everything about the main character, Ellie.
Characters:
In the story we have the main character, Ellie, her friend Toby (who we do not meet,
but hear about) and the mother (we do not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How the fuck did she manage to sleep for so long?
The negative words have great influence on how the reader understands and interprets
the story. The MILJГ becomes very dark, and the whole short story is read in
another way than it would have been otherwise.
Theme/Message:
As I wrote in the introduction, the main theme is identity formation. Ellie is a lost
teenager who lives her life on coke and other narcotics. She has some problems with
her parents, and she blames them for everything: To whom? To what? To why? To
God? To Mum? To Dad? Not then especially not them. It was their fault she was
doing this bloody course in the first place.
When she suddenly finds the stone she is reminded of her mothers love, and she
starts to think about life and her parents. Especially her mothers love is a thing she
realizes she has taken for granted. Ellie suddenly sees everything, life, in a new
perspective: It is filled with people, and everyone, everyone Ellie sees has the same
substance within them, around them, connecting them, looping between them in
great bonds of love.
The title A Gap of Sky is specifically chosen and also appears in the story itself: [...]
a gap of sky to her right, an emptiness, a vacancy that she doesn t remember seeing
before, something destroyed, or being built [...] In this beautifully written piece of the
story, Ellie discovers she is missing something in her life. Conclusion

Deforestation
Thesis:
Deforestation is one of the most significant issues of our time; considerable measures
must be taken to prevent further pillaging of our unique forest resource.
Ninety percent of the earth s trees between three and four hundred years old have
been cut down. The remaining ten percent is all we will ever have (Gallant, 97). The
definition of deforestation by the Random House Dictionary of the English
Language is to divest or clear of forests or trees. Deforestation is one of the most

With new technology such as satellites systems, low altitude photography and side
looking radar scientists now figure that the world is losing about twenty million
hectares of tropical forests annually. It has been suggested that the high deforestation
rates are caused partially by the fact that the new surveys are more accurate and thus
reveal old deforestation rates that were miscalculated with previous methods
(Westoby, 202). At first there was concern only among foresters about deforestation
but now the public has created organizations such as Green Peace to facilitate
increased awareness and reduce deforestation. The Food and Agriculture Organization
(F.A.O.) has worked mainly within the forestry community to find new and better
ways to manage the forests. In 1985 there was the introduction of the Tropical
Forestry Action Plan or T.F.A.P. This plan involved the F.A.O, United Nations, World
Bank, other developmental agencies, and several other multi national government
organizations; together they developed a new strategy. More than sixty countries
have decided to prepare national forestry action plans to manage their forests
(Gallant, 381). Tropical deforestation has various direct causes: permanent
conversion of forests to agricultural land, logging, demand for fuel wood, forest fires
and drought. Slash and burn clearing is the single greatest cause of tropical rain
forest destruction world wide. Air
Reflection On Improving My Writing Composition
As a student in High School, my writing composition was not very well developed.
Although, I got help from my teachers, in addition to that, on my free time I went to
the library to make extra corrections that were needed. My dad also helped me all
throughout high school by reading over my essays and making comments on what I
need to improve on, but even then I believe that my writingcould have improved. I
have tried to find strategic ways to improve my writing and I believe that I may
slowly be getting there. One of my strong points as a writer, which could also be seen
as a weak point according to my teachers, is my research; I go in full depth with
details and my research is always accurate. I go too deep into my research which takes
Fear As The Dominant Theme In The Chrysalids By John
Wyndham
Fear as the Dominant Theme.
Every single person in this world fears something, and there is magnificent amount
of different types of fear that people know of. Each type of fear has a different name.
For example, fear of change is called metathesiophobia, and fear of darkness is called
Achluophobia. Fear can be not only a phobia but in a novel it can be represented as
theme. One of the examples of a novel that has a lot of fear in it is The Chrysalids by
John Wyndham which took place in the future, years after a nuclear holocaust has
devastated large areas of the world. In that novel Wyndham explores many themes
throughout the text, the main one being fear. The existence of fear in this novel is
a critical factor in the unfolding of the plot. Most of the problems that occurred in
John Wyndham s tale happen because of fear. Overall, this is shown through
everyone s fear of being different, fear helped to develop Petra s character, and by
everyone thinking that if a baby was born as a blasphemy, the women is always
the one who is responsible for that, but never the man. In places like Waknuk
people are terrified of being different in anyway in the Image of God. To begin,
David, who is the son of Joseph Strorm, is praying in the church for dead Aunt
Harriet and he is overwhelmed by what will happen to him if someone figures out
that he is different. Please, please, God, let me be like other people. I don t want to
be different. Won t you make it so that when I wake up in the morning I ll be just
like everyone else, please, God, please! (Wyndham 76). This quote tells the reader
that even David is scared of being different. His fear was caused by Aunt Harriet s
death because of her child s small deviation. He finally comes to the understanding
of how much trouble he can get into because of his own deviation. Another
example of people fearing the difference is shown in the beginning of this novel
when David explains that children who do not behave well are frightened by their
parents with the Fringes people. In my father s childhood mothers used to quieten
and awe troublesome infants by threatening: Be good now, or I ll fetch Old Maggie
from the Fringes to you. She s got four eyes to watch you with, and four
Pros And Cons Of Justice Of The Peace Courts
Justice of the peace courts is low level courts. These courts are found only in
Arizona, Delaware, Louisiana, Montana, and Texas. Justice of the peace courts has
original jurisdiction over Class C misdemeanors that include: traffic violations, bail

warrants depending on certain situations. Justices are known for keeping the
peace. They can arrest criminals or insane people, order the removal of people who
behave in a disorderly fashion in a public place and carry out other duties designed
to maintain or restore a peaceful community. The cons to Justices of the peace is that
they have limited power in criminal and civil cases. Their powers of civil jurisdiction
Intellectual Progress Of Mankind By Martin Luther King Jr.
Intellectual Progress of Mankind
Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable...every step toward the goal of
justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and
passionate concern of dedicated individuals Martin Luther King, Jr. Intellectual
progress of mankind is the progression towards discovering the questions about
curiosity on why something is what it is or what makes something work the way
that it does. The discovery of which we make on defining, proving, and supporting
scientific and theoretical issues is a reflection of how far we have come on
particular issues of study. this can be defined as changes that take place as a result of
growth in the thinking of mankind resulting from one s capability to think,
experience, reasoning judgement and ability to conceptualize. This helps humankind
to progress in different aspects of life and make advancements on daily basis in
relation to his life. Three main subject leads toward Intellectual Progress of mankind,
philosophies, ideologies, and theories which this paper examines as related themes
that often intersect in educational ideas (Gutek, 2004). Philosophy falls somewhere
between the arts and sciences. On the one hand, it offers idiosyncratic worldviews
that may be too disparate to compare. It is not surprising, then, that the question Is
philosophy progressive? is hardly ever raised. From one viewpoint, it offers quirky
perspectives that might be excessively unique, making
Dennis Lynn Rar Research Paper
Bind them, Torture them, Kill them or BTK for short. That was the moniker that
convicted Serial Killer Dennis Rader went by in Wichita Kansas. Most neighbors
described him as Just a Regular Person. He worked as a city law supervisor, Boy
Scout leader, Church Elder. He had loving parents and siblings. But behind that mask
was a sexually driven Monster.
Dennis Lynn Rader was born March 9th, 1945 the oldest of four sons, born to
Dorothea Rader and William Rader. Friends remember him as friendly but somewhat
straitlaced. After a stint as a sergeant in the United States Air Force, He started

The Importance Of Saying All Lives Matter
I strongly dislike when people lack understanding. When it comes to the Black
Lives Matter movement, why are people quick to raise All Lives Matter ? Instead
of trying to understand the hardship and racism that African Americans face,
people are quick to be defensive and assume that if Black lives matter then all of a
sudden now no one elses lives matter. Saying All Lives Matter is a selfish sentiment
showing that people lack a level of compassion when it comes to an issue that does
not address them. I think that this an inhuman and wrong way of thinking. I believe
that having abortions are wrong because that is destroying a life created by God. I
think that there are natural ways to prevent pregnancysuch as natural family planning

When I Went To Walmart
I went home the weekend of October 8 and 9th. On Sunday October 9th my mom
and I went to Walmart. I was hoping that she would buy me tea so I did not have to
buy it myself. However, the Walmart in Wadsworth, Ohio, my home town, was
completely out of 12 packs of Lipton Citrus Green Iced Tea. There was no kiosk for
them and there were none of that flavor in the aisle. At this Walmart, where they
should have been was surrounded by other types of Lipton, Pure Life, and Snapple
teas. On Monday October 10th, I went to Walmart in Ashland because I failed to
purchase teain Wadsworth. They had it, but were also surprisingly low stocked. My
theory is this product is a star in the summer time, but in the fall and winter months it
is more of a cash cow.
LGBT Politicians in the US
In Greenwich Village on a warm July morning in 1969, a group of gay men and
women are brawling with police officers. This is Stonewall. These riots mark the start
of the Gay Liberation movement a social cause hampered by public stigma such as
the AIDS Epidemic, religious intolerance, negligence of an almost criminal level by
the United States government, and outright scorn from all directions. Stonewall
marked the first critically important instance of the gay community fighting back
against all of this injustice. The following decades would result in an unprecedented
shift in public opinion. They would not, however, result in an unprecedented shift in
congressional representation. The lack of representation is dangerous to the LGBT...

Johnston was the Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman, and a longtime
friend of Congressman Studds. The claim that Studds inspired a generation of
LGBT persons is hard to verify. Every memoriam article concerning Studds makes
this claim, but none seem to have found anyone to be inspired aside from close
personal friends. On Studds death in 2006, many claimed that his example had
made it possible for other LGBT citizens to serve public office. I would argue that
Studds had no intention of ever admitting his sexuality, let alone serving as some
beacon of pride. Only after an affair with a nearly underage boy did the
Congressman admit his sexuality. This conduct did nothing but help to solidify the
stigma attached to LGBT persons. Studds s actions gave his electoral opposition
plenty of firepower to use. Studds, as a publicly elected representative, wasn t just
representing himself when he committed his actions, but was rather representing a
very young social cause. When first discovered, his actions harmed that cause.
Studds s case is particularly important because he was first: his actions established
negative precedent an example of behavior to be followed for all of those potential
LGBT candidates that would follow. Studds was re elected the next year with little

Plake 2004:15ff). At about the same time the Scotsman John Logie Baird used the
telephone net to transmit pictures from London to Glasgow and invented cable TV.
This new transmitting method improved the quality of reception and even live
transmission was possible (cf. Plake 2004:15).
In 1940 there were already twenty seven TV stations operating in the United
States, but during the second World War the development of the television market
slowed down. The increasing lack of money and staff resulted in the shutdown of
several TV stations and also the sale of TV sets went down. But after the war the
economy recovered and an enormous television boom followed. In 1951 first
colour TV sets were placed on the market and in 1960 there were already more than
five hundred TV programs and 95% of them belonged to three major networks:
NBC, CBS and ABC. Many local TV stations which tried to remain independent,
were finally edged out of the TV market (cf. Plake 2004:18ff).
In cooperation with Europe, US television conglomerations invested millions of
dollars in the development of a worldwide TV network via satellite and cable. So
television was no longer bound by the territorial limits of the nation state (cf. Plake
2004:23ff).
2.Globalisation of the TV market and its effects:
As globalisation and commercialisation is constantly changing the media landscape,
even on the TV sector more and more power is concentrated in just a few hands.

Dj Kol Herc Research Paper
Clive Campbell, better known by his stage name DJ Kool Herc, is a Jamaican
American DJ who often threw block parties in the early 1970 s in one of the most
impoverished areas of New York City, the South Bronx . At these party s Herc
created rhythmic beats by looping the breaks in songs. Later these same beats
would be accompanied by rap , a rhythmic style of chanting poetry which is often
presented in 16 bar measures or time frames (Thompson). Herc is often regarded as
the father of hip hop musicbecause what started out as just block party music turned
into a cultural movement for many young African American youths. The music in
different eras represents a sort of time machine into what ideas and problems are
wrong with society, thus bringing them to the attention of the masses and getting
them solved. Hip Hop music took a progressive approach to this by presenting big
issues and problems that have affected minorities and society in general. By doing

demographics in order to figure out exactly who listens to hip hop. This survey gave

The Roles Of The Human System Of Emotions
While there were theories surrounding the human system of emotions as was
aforementioned, these concepts were still known to be speculative, and the inner
workings of the human body as a whole remained enigmatic for centuries. Therefore
the notion that any one person could harbor the ability to sway the passions that were
supposedly dictated by humours, which were believed to be stagnant and involuntary,
was mysterious and menacing. Roach encapsulates the fantastical and suspicious

A figurehead of the abject criticism of restoration era theatre was Jeremy Collier, a
non juror bishop who famously wrote A Short View of the Immorality and
Profaneness of the English Stage, in which he discusses the deleterious effects of
depicting unscrupulous acts,
Young people particularly, should not entertain themselves with a Lewd Picture;
especially when tis drawn by a Masterly Hand. For such a Liberty may probably raise
those Passions which can neither be discharged without Trouble, nor satisfyed
without a Crime,
In this distressed excerpt, Collier explains that if a young audience member were to
see the lascivious acts such as those portrayed on stage that it would stir up the
passions inside him that would compel him to act similarly or mirror such behavior,
and that these desires could not be satisfied without committing a malfeasance.
Collier s fears bear similarity to the pneumonic idea presented earlier, that the actor
was able to manipulate their own thoughts and feelings and transfer them to the
spectator, and ultimately [alter] their moral natures. talk about this more Throughout
his pamphlet Collier cites various religious doctrine and constitutions to express that
entertainment was not a pastime or place for people of piety, and that actors have

Renaissance Influence On Art
The Renaissance, a time defined as the rebirth, occurred in Italy between 1350 and
1600. Spreading quickly throughout Europe, with the innovation of the printing
press, it caused rippling effects. The Renaissance ultimately altered the aged
education of the Dark Ages and renewed it with studies of the more classic works
instead of theology. Classic art and literature grew extremely popular, contrasting the
lack of interest in them before. Many artists became prominent advocates for the
revival of the ideals of the classical past. The artists, using their masterpieces,
tremendously determined modern historians view the era. While several aspects of
the Renaissancecontributed and influenced the time, artists like Michelangelo, da

Born March 6, 1475, Michelangelo Buonarroti is considered [to be] one of the most
famous artists of the Italian Renaissance. (Biography.com Editors) As a child,
Michelangelo had a greater interest in artwork and its production rather than
schooling, so at the age of 13 his father allowed him to become Domenico
Ghirlandaio s apprentice in Florence. During his teenage years, Michelangelo
studied classic sculpture in the Florentine gardens of the Medici family, who were
wealthy and allowed him access to the elite of Florence. After studying there for a
few years, he eventually moved to Rome, where he would work until he died.
Known for his sculptures the Pieta and David, and for his paintings on the ceiling
of the Sistine Chapel and the Last Judgement Michelangelo had many other works.
Michelangelo s innovated artistry was believed to have achieved a whole new
depth over the timespan. Like da Vinci, Michelangelo is said to have influenced
Raphael, an artist who actually was his arch rival. This is an example of how
Michelangelo was influential during the Renaissance. His artwork depicted scenes
from the bible and were painted in the Sistine Chapel which is a major contribution to
the culture and beliefs of the time.
Raffaello Sanzio, famously known as Raphael, was an artist and architect born April

My Experience From Fort Hood, Texas Essay
As I sit in my car, in the parking lot of a 24 hour Walmart, I reminisce of the many
experiences that lead to this moment. Writing this essay with a notepad on my lap
and pen in hand, this position is all too familiar, surreal, and thought provoking.
How did this all happen...again? Exactly 4 years and 3 weeks ago today, I was on
a plane to Afghanistan. I remember the very long flight from Fort Hood, Texas
with a stop in Kyrgyzstan. During our last few days of preparation for our final
flight, I took in the very crisp air that emanated from the snow capped mountains;
surrounding the base in the distance. I couldn t help but feel a sense of adventure
despite my destination of war. The vivid moments within the many memories of
such small wonders have continued to bless me with a peaceful acceptance; of not
only my combat experience, but of my experiences prior to war. In May of 2009, I
took a selfie in a public restroom, where I had slept for a few weeks. I was battling
my fifth year of chronic homelessness; rotating from the comfy couch of the Macy
s restroom to the bathroom stalls of a bus station. Eventually, I found myself
sneaking two minute naps while pretending to wait for a subway train. I took my
act of pretending to the next level, by tending to myself at local gyms that offered
free trials. Fitness became my fuel, providing me with a healthy tolerance and
perseverance; of the daily exhaustion and struggle of homelessness. Little did I know,
it was preparing me for
The Impact Of NCSA And The Native Corporation System
On...
In considering how Natives have been treated in American history, it can be
surmised that NCSA and the Native corporation system have been good for Alaska
Natives. For the most part, ANCSA and the Native corporation system have had a
positive impact on Alaska Natives. For example, in that era of American history,
ANCSA was the largest land claim settlement. And for another example, the Native
corporation system was set up in a way, that it safeguarded the land and cash
settlement, so it would profit future generations of Alaska Natives and nonnatives
as well. Nevertheless, ANCSA and the Native corporation system have had a
negative impact as well. Such as, ANCSA was not seen as a good deal for all the
Alaskan Natives. Because ANCSA caused confusion over governing structures of the
tribes, many Natives believed that ANCSA made their tribes weak. Furthermore,
during their first twenty years, the Alaska Native regional corporations endured huge
profits losses in their effort to parlay control of their land, their natural resources, and
their capital. They lost $250 million between 1974 and 1991 by not including their

2012 Olympics and its impact on the hospitality industry of London.

and Paralympics Games. The games is often labelled as the greatest show on earth
which involves thousands of sports persons both men and women from around the
globe aiming to reach the ultimate in sporting achievement. The Olympic Games will
take place entirely in London, but the bid team had stressed throughout their
campaign that the games would benefit the whole of Britain.

Athens 2004 would have benefited from its investment in urban regeneration and
transport infrastructure. Before the Games Sydney 2000 was a great city to visit and
now is better again after its Olympic experience. Atlanta 1996 was located within 2
hours flying time from major US cities. It was a major domestic convention hub
before the Games with comparatively few international visitors. But as inbound
statistics reflect, Atlanta is still a major domestic convention hub with no hard
evidence of an Olympics afterglow in the inbound market.
Barcelona 1992 achieved incredible tourism image transformation but the hotel
market in the post Olympic era was badly over supplied for several years. Whereas
Seoul 1988 opened its inbound tourism industry. The city added several hotels and
infrastructure investment which dramatically improved the tourism appeal and till
now Seoul remains a strong hotel market. As seen here Barcelona and Seoul were the
two most successful cities in creating additional inbound traffic. But the point to note
was that both these cities had low profile tourism at the time of hosting the games and
so they had much to gain from the hosting of the games.
When we refer to the term Hospitality we normally refer to the relationship between a
guest and a host.
Life Is Life For Granted
Life is not lost by dying; life is lost minute by minute, day by dragging day, in all
the thousand small uncaring ways, Stephen Vincent BenГ©t. I believe life is way
too short to take for granted. There are all sorts of people in this world who most
definitely take their lives for granted. I think that they should just focus on one day
at a time and not plan too far in the future because they do not know what is going to
happen in the next minute. The main individual who taught me not to take my life
for granted was my Aunt Rita, who passed away from small cell lung cancerwhen I
was ten. Although it might not always feel like it, life is ridiculously short, it
probably would not mean much, or be worth much if it lasted forever, because it s so
short, with the limited time that you have, I recommend creating something
worthwhile, and if you dare, something amazing. I believe that people are supposed
to love the life that God has given them because at any moment it can change
dramatically right before their eyes and be changed for the rest of their life. No
one knows the exact feeling of life being too short, but some people have an idea
of what it feels like. Some people find out what life being too short feels like and
they don t figure this out until they have experienced something that is as terrible
as this. My life just happened to change when I was about ten years old, my sister,
nana, and papaw, and I went on our first vacation to Canada. As we started our
journey and about 50 miles in, we got a life changing call from my mom. My aunt
did not have much longer to live, and they said she wanted my nana there. So we
rushed to the hospital where we went to her room. There she laid in a hospital bed,
she was happy that we made it, but she knew her time was coming. She called my
papaw over and told him go take those kids on their vacation, she did not want to
ruin our vacation. So after a long night of thinking my sister and my papaw and I
headed out, while my nana stayed with her sister. Later that night when we were
all snuggled in our beds, we got a heart wrenching call. My aunt had passed away,
but she said she wanted us to keep going for her, because she loved to travel. On the
long car ride home,
Perfect Body Image Research Paper
Why is Achieving the Perfect Body Image Important to College Women?
College women are constantly bombarded with images of the perfect body that
negatively affects their self esteem. The perfect body is usually classified as the
hourglass figure, which means they have a small waist, big but and big breast.
Majority of women don t have the hourglass figure or they don t look like models,
so women are constantly criticizing their bodies. Sharon Capuano, Nurse and
Manager of the Health Center at Salve Regina University believes that different
cultures perceive the perfect body in different ways. Capuano says, The idea of the
perfect body has gone through an evolution. She adds, When you look back in
history, women were heavier but as time goes on, they become skinnier. Magazines
are starting to portray women it a negative way and it gives people false perception.
Capuano says it makes women think to themselves, Oh, I want to look like you
because everything is perfect. False perception gives women unrealistic expectations
and they will constantly live in a world where they are striving to be something that
they are not. This leaves many women with no other choice but to struggle with
insecurities on a daily basis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The s Front Door At Seven O Clock On A Sunday
Opening Sweetgreen s front door, I instantly felt out of place. At seven o clock on a
Sunday evening, the small salad shop was a place filled with almost all females. Even
though I was anticipating this result, I still found it hard to believe that this restaurant
was always occupied by entirely women. Upon asking an employee about whether my
observation was something that occurs often, he responded, we are Sweetgreen. Of
course, we get a lot more girls than guys. The fact that Sweetgreen attracts girls must
have something to do with how it brands itself. After having trouble finding any
advertisements for the brand online, I concluded that the marketing that attracts these
females must be in the store. After going back to Sweetgreen, I came to the
conclusion that whether intentional or not, Sweetgreen is marketed toward the
stereotypical femaleas seen through its core values, decor, menu options, and
service. Sweetgreen utilizes the fact that the mass media encourages women to
obtain a thin figure, as discussed by Susan Bordo in Hunger as Ideology, in order
to sell their product. Bordo explains that advertisements teach women to view long,
slim legs, a flat stomach, and a firm rear end as essentials of female beauty. (102)
Because advertisers constantly convince women that achieving a thin figure is
important, women eventually became self critical of their bodies. This causes
women to push toward this ideal image by losing weight by eating fewer calories. By

  • 2. The French Paradox Of Cholesterol And Saturated Fat Diet The French paradox is a slogan which was first used in the 1980 s to summarize the observation of low Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) rates, as shown in figure 1, of the French despite their dangerously high intake of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat (FerriГЁres, 2004). The French acquire approximately 38% of their energy from fat with 16% of that being saturated fat. This is in contradiction to the widely known and proved hypothesis that a high consumption of fat is a major factor in CHD. This paradox implies a significant possibility: There is an additional factor in the French diet that alleviates the risks associated with a high fat diet. Ryan Fujiu believes that it is the regular consumption of red winethat diminishes the dangers of a high fat diet. He states that: The health benefits of red wine have come to light in recent years. Hope is on the horizon, and it may be in your glass ref. This topic is highly controversial as there are also detriments to the consumption of alcohol. There has been much debate about this issue for the last two decades. In order to make a plausible decision on Ryan s statement, this report will look at the advantages and disadvantages of red wine by analysing chemicals present in wine and their effects on the human body. During the wine making process various chemicals are added, so it is necessary to look at the wine making process first to come up with a plausible decision for Ryan s statement. Wine making is an 8 step process as
  • 3. Essay on Economic Analysis of The U.S. 2001-2003 Economic Analysis of The U.S. 2001 2003 Economics have many indicators to describe how it runs. The indicators can show if the economy has improved or declined. The economic indicators that will be focused on in this analysis of the United States economy from 2001 2003 will be the consumer price index, the imports and exports, the unemployment rate, and finally the gross domestic product. Now while most may know the meanings of the previously stated indicators, for those who don t, they remain useless unless defined. To begin with, these indicators will have to be defined in full to aid in understanding the analysis in more detail. It will be after that that the actual analysis of the economy of the United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously unemployed rate is defined as the fraction of the labor force that is unemployed . To define the unemployed is important as well, because it refers to those that have no job, but are actively looking for work, not to those who are not working and are uninterested in searching or getting a job . The reason that unemployment is so important in determining the economy s success is because it is intertwined with the gross domestic product, as in when the gross domestic product falls, unemployment is increased, and when it rises, there is a decrease in unemployment . To make what is being explained clearer, when there is unemployment, production is down; therefore there is less money and goods produced out of the economy. This is how unemployment relates as well. The last indicator to be defined is probably the most the important of them all, and that is the gross domestic product. The gross domestic product is defined as the total market value of all the final goods and services produced within an economy in a given year . There are two types of gross domestic product, real and nominal. Real GDP is adjusted to how prices have changed, as nominal GDP is the current price as it is calculated . There is so very much that goes into the gross domestic product that in this analysis only the percent change from the years will be shown as important. A percent that is positive is obviously
  • 4. Relation Between Architecture And The Environment.this... An architect cannot build a consistent and stable structure without knowing the relationship between architecture and the environment. This topic should be discussed on various angles. One of them is the aesthetical point of view, and the other is the human intervention in nature. The former is essentially an artistic debate and a generic timeless topic since the beginning of architectural practices. The other one is a more contemporary issue. In a broader aspect, this topic isn t only the architect s interest, but also is an issue of engineers, scientists and even social scientist s; and yet it can even extend to global warmingconcerns. For this reason, let us firstly start and find out the most current dispute entitled as humanintervention in nature. Humans since their very first existence have been in a big struggle against the nature. However, they shape the nature to suffice their needs and in essence adapt themselves accordingly into the conditions given by the Mother Nature. Over time nature has resisted to this human endeavor in every possible way it can and tried not to surrender humans. No matter how strong this resistance is; humans somehow found a way to break it down with their inborn skills that they managed to develop in time. This can be regarded as a seamless dance between these two enormous forces. As the nature manifested itself as an obstacle where humans accomplished to push it away, this struggle shaped the way in which humans developed a way of

  • 6. Motifs In Medieval Books Of Hours, The Three Living And... Since the initial post on August 30th 2014, the Facebook page Classical Art Memes revolutionized the way that 1.9 million followers view both the internet meme and classical art. The page is so popular that the manager of Classical Art Memes started a crowdfunding campaign to continue producing high quality memes in addition to their other commitments in life. Classical Art Memes does not discriminate which pieces of art are used, satirizing pieces from ancient art to modern art, though mostly focusing on Medieval and Renaissance pieces. These memes are mostly very specific phrases that describe the piece of art in a more modern context, but some are viral memes that have been reproduced with other images including pieces of art. The page does... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The word meme was coined in 1976 by biologist Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene. The word is meant to describe something that is transmitted in any way other than genetically. According to Dawkins, the word meme isn t necessarily intended to be used exclusively for scientific purposes. Examples of memes, Dawkins writes, are tunes, ideas, catch phrases, clothes, fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches. Just as genes propagate themselves in the gene pool by leaping from body to body via sperms or eggs, so memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation. Perhaps, if Dawkins book had been published after the advent of the internet, he would have mentioned the internet as a place for information to travel in the form of memes. In 1996, Richard Brodie, a contemporary of Dawkins further expanded Dawkins definition in his book Virus of the Mind: The New Science of the Meme. Brodie s succinct definition states: A meme is an idea, the kind of complex idea that forms itself into a distinct memorable unit. It is spread by vehicles that are physical manifestations of the meme. As the internet was still in its infantile stage, it s unlikely that Brodie knew what the idea of a meme would become, yet his expanded definition of the meme better
  • 7. United States And The Modern World Every minute, 30 football field sized sections of forests are cut down and that is just from illegal harvesting ( Corruption and the Environment ). The modern world has become so reliant on wood products that at the current rate of deforestation there will soon be no forests left to enjoy. Governments refrain from making their clear cutting plans public to avoid scrutiny. With governments very unlikely to change their policies, unless monetary gain is guaranteed, it is on the people of the United States and the rest of the world to reinforce positive environmental consciousness. If people were to become aware of the consequences to living extravagant lifestyles, more natural resources would be conserved for future generations. People in ... In order to create a healthier, more financially stable society, and to reduce unnecessary energy emissions from properties, homeowners, realtors and developers must consolidate to reduce home sizes and create larger, more environmentally sustainable outdoor landscapes. Since the inflation of the United States dollar continues to rise every year, housing prices in relation to the peak of the market in 2006 are at a standstill, or even are decreasing in many cities. The housing market has fully recovered from the devastation of 2006. Currently, homes in San Francisco are worth, on average, almost 15% more than in 2008. Unfortunately, due to inflation the majority of the value in the housing market has decreased since the mortgage fallout, by 19.4% ( American House Prices ). The housing market peaked just before the collapse of 2006, mainly because banks became greedy and did not check the majority of their clients credit scores. As the time passed, banks soon realized that their plans were not unfolding as planned. The Washington Post estimated that at the time of the fallout 1 in 5 mortgage holders had below average credit. In many banks, whole empires were controlled by subprime mortgages . This meant homebuyers who had poor credit scores dictated the

  • 9. Analysis Of The Boys In The Boat Daniel James Brown manages to awe and inspire readers in his book The Boys in the Boat, which describes the hardships a row crew from Washington underwent to make it to the 1936 Olympics. The story of the nine rowers on the Washington crew teaches lessons about inner confidence, trust, dedication, and the hope that can be found during even the most difficult times. I learned while reading that being the underdog doesn t mean you re destined to fail. Readers see that despite the hardships and many disadvantages the Washington crew faced, their dedication allowed them to beat the odds and inspire an entire nation. Boys in the Boat tends to focus on one rower and his internal struggles in particular Joe Rantz, who became an indispensable member to the team despite his humble beginnings. He suffered through a difficult childhood and was described as poor as a church mouse (129). He deals with the shame and embarrassment his financial situation puts him in he wore his ragged sweater to practice almost everyday, and the boys still teased him continuously for it (91). For a row team to be successful, every member must work in unison and have trust in each other. Readers can see how difficult this is for Joe at first knowing his past and internal struggles makes you wonder how he could possibly learn to depend on the other rowers. But throughout the book we see character growth in Joe. He learns from his mentors, begins to trust his teammates and gains confidence in

The pros and cons of using the HPI as a practitioner of I O Psychology are explored. Other valuable uses include vetting of new partners, diagnosing sources of conflict, matching personality to particular tasks or initiatives while also taking the guesswork out of the hiring process (Neville, 2013). Current thinking in personality assessments converges on the idea that most personality characteristics reflect the five broad characteristics of the Five Factor Model extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness (The Science of Personality, 2015). Personality tests are typically less likely to differ in results by gender and race than other tests, can be administered via paper and pencil or computerized methods to large groups easily, cost effectively and do not necessarily require skilled administrators (SIOP). In 2012 thirty five percent of Human Resources around the world reported that they use personality inventories (Gray, 2015). Hogan Personality Inventory The standardized test I have chosen to analyze is The Hogan Personality Inventory. Within a remarkably brief period, Greek artists developed focused and distinctive ideals of human beauty and architectural design that continues to be a profound influence today. Greek art was self aware, and self confident, developing a concept of human supremacy and responsibility that required a new visual expression. This is in stark contrast to ancient Egypt, where permanence and continuity maintained stable artistic conventions for nearly 3000 years. By the end of the first century BCE, the influence of Greek painting, sculpture, and architecture had spread to communities of emerging Roman Empire. Roman patrons and artists maintained Greek art and customs into Early Christian and Byzantine times. Beginning in 1981, the Allegheny Conference (ACC), a non profit coalition of local business and political leaders, made economic diversification their primary goal. The conference established a committee whose sole task was to promote new industries. • 17. Nuclear Power Supplies A Significant Part Of Current... MOX Title Background: Nuclear power supplies a significant portion of current energy demands. One of the newer advances in nuclear fuel is Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel. MOX is a mixture of UO2 and PuO2. Both of these starting materials can be recovered from spent traditional nuclear fuel [1]. As such, MOX provides a method for reducing waste generated during the operation of a nuclear reactor. MOX fuel is currently in use in Europe, Russia and Japan [2]. The United States is in the process of developing next generation nuclear reactors which can employ MOX. Due to the importance of MOX fuel, important research is currently being to both understand the principles governing MOX, and how to enhance its performance. MOX fuel is comprised of UO2 and PuO2. The UO2 is acquired either from naturally occurring uranium oxide, or recovered from the spent fuel of a traditional nuclear reactor. Plutonium metal is produced by the U 238 during operation of the nuclear reactor [1]. The Pu must then be converted to PuO2. The first step in producing PuO2 is to dissolve the recovered Pu in HNO3 HF to get Pu(NO3)4. Once the Pu(NO3)4 is generated, a few different methods can be used to acquire PuO2. The most commercially used method involves the precipitation of plutonium oxalate. The Pu(NO3)4 is conditioned with hydrogen peroxide to produce Pu(lV). Next, an excess of oxalic acid is added to reduce the solubility. The oxalate is then left to decompose to oxide which can then be filtered and dried

The ill feeling is better defined as food aversions, nausea and vomiting. It is termed morning sickness because many women experience it upon rising (Profet, 1995); but in reality, morning sickness could happen at any time of the day. So the term morning sickness may be a misnomer. There are many other terms used including nauseaand vomiting in pregnancy(NVP) rather than morning sickness (Flaxman Sherman, 2000). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another similar study on spices by Flaxman and Sherman (2000) showed that spices have anti microbial properties and are commonly used in hot climate countries because unrefrigerated food are prone to food spoilage faster. Although Billing and Sherman (1998) agreed that spices help to maintain palatability of food besides enhancing its flavour, but Flaxman and Sherman (2000) suggested that too much of spices may be harmful as well. For example, ingestion of large amounts of capsaicin causes high toxicity in blood; this is even worse in pregnant women as their toxin tolerance thresholds are lowered (Flaxman Sherman, 2000). So, certain spices could cause NVP when they are consumed in large amounts. Also, excessive amounts of caffeine causes spontaneous abortions (Weathersbee, Olsen and Lodge, 1977) and through NVP, pregnant women will tend to reduce intake of caffeine. Food aversions cause reduced nutrient intake in pregnant women as they experience weight loss during their first trimester (Tierson, Olsen and Hook, 1986). Although this may protect the embryos, it may increase cardiovascular and behavioural diseases when they are grown up (Watkins et al. 2008). The maternal threshold for tolerating toxicity is lowered during the first trimester; it will then increase during the second and third trimesters (Profet, 1995). Profet (1995) explained that the lowering of toxin tolerance threshold in pregnant women as hyperosmatic because they are
  • 19. Bigger Than Life By Nicholas Ray Nicholas Ray s Bigger Than Life is a story of an American family man who tries to have it all and fails because of his addiction. In an effort to visually portray this, Ray largely abandons conventional Cinemascope practices and tends to revert to the paradigms of the Academy ratio. Rather than using Cinemascope to highlight spectacle, Ray films a small family melodrama. Instead of splitting the screen into thirds and adjusting the mise en scГЁne to visually fill up the screen, Ray uses close ups, single person shots, and symmetry. He frequently divides the screen in two at the center, essentially treating each side as an Academy ratio film. Since Ray focuses less on clotheslining actors, he is able to bring the audience closer to understand the psychology of Ed Avery (and physcially closer to him than most Cinemascope films would go). The sequence towards the end of film is of paramount importance Ray takes the tension, anger, cruelty, and derangement that has been building throughout the film and raises it to a high enough level that Ed is willing to kill his own son. To get this across, Ray uses composition to show Ed as isolated, sinister, and dangerous. Two of the scenes in particular from the sequence deviate from his regular techniques, as he stages the family in a single frame to highlight the growing distance between them all. Throughout the film, Ray used close ups to show Ed s mental state; in this sequence, Ray largely abandons that technique Ed s state of mind

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There has been much discussion surrounding the name change from Saul to Paul beginning in Acts chapter 13. It is shown throughout the New Testament after Saul s conversion that he called himself Paul and only used the name Saul when he referred to incidents that occurred prior to his conversion. Other commentaries attribute the name change to Saul s desire to not share the same name with wicked King Saul from the Old Testament who persecuted David, Jesus ancestor. Many significant people in the Bible were referred to by different names such as Jesus disciples Matthew (Levi), Simon (Peter), Abraham (Abram), Sarah (Sarai), Jacob (Israel). The Bible does not offer a reason why Saul changed his name to Paul or indicate whether it was inspired by God or not. The timing of the change of name leads us to believe it was because of his conversion and desire to abandon his old nature and walk in the calling God placed on his life. The Damascus Experience The account of Saul s conversion is such an important theme that it is reported in three different areas of the book (Acts 9:1 19, Acts 22:4 16 and Acts 26:9 19). Even though these 3 verses differ in the amount of detail they contain, they all focus on different aspects of the miraculous encounter. Charles

  • 28. Analysis Of The Kings Of Summer Two components that have an immense impact on the quality and caliber of a film are the editing and sound found within the film. These two aspects alone can make or break a film. In the film The Kings of Summer, directed by Jordan Vogt Roberts, these two elements collaborate to highlight certain emotions and key moments in the films plot. Some of the sub elements of these two components that can easily be identified within the film include the flashforward, the flashback, both nondiegetic and diegetic sound, semi diegetic sound, graphic matching and voice offs. Within the film The Kings Of Summer, editing and sound are methodically and tactfully utilized in order to produce a film that is both entertaining and meaningful for the audience. Two of the most prominent aspects of editing that can be identified within this film are the flashforward and the flashback. At the commencement of the film, a flashforward is employed. It shows drums being played in a forest by the three characters that were yet to be introduced to the audience. Then the scene quickly cuts to the main character, Joe, in the shower at his house. This flashforward is used in order to provide the audience with an idea of what is to come in the not so distant future of the film. Another flashforward is utilized when Joe, Patrick, and Biaggio are living in the forest. This flashforward shows Joe and the female lead, Kelly, in the woods. It portrays the two in a romantic light, and includes a confession from Kelly that she wants to stay and live in the forest with Joe. This flashforward, unlike the previous example, does not come true. However, it is used to portray the deep emotions of Joe, and his longing for female companionship. These emotions become relevant when Kelly falls for Joe s friend Patrick instead of him. During the conclusion of the film, a flashback is employed so the audience can relive the previous events that occurred within the film. When Biaggio is in the hospital, a flashback reminds the audience of when Joe and Patrick first entered the forest, at the onset of their adventure. This flashback brings the audience back to a happier and lighter point in the story line. In the film The Kings of Summer, flashfowards and

We cut these sheets to the desired dimensions and attached them using bent aluminum sheet metal. We used 6 32 threaded nuts and bolts to fasten the metal angle brackets to the PVC sheets. This combination of materials and fasteners used to create the housing structure for our electrical components made for a strong, yet lightweight prototype. This strength allowed for our structure to be free standing and added a component of durability without adding to the size or weight significantly. Also, this housing structure contained all of our wires and components meaning that there were no extraneous pieces protruding from the structure. This uniform structure kept components from getting snagged by outside materials during transport. By producing the prototype from these materials at the given dimensions, we were able to create a prototype structure that displayed durability, strength, and functionality while remaining quite portable. Temperature Measurements Ambient temperature was measured (and reported by Bluetooth) by the use of an analog temperature

Tycho then left Leipzig and went to Germany. When Tycho went to Germany he met some amateur astronomers who were very rich. They studied together for a long time. Their problem was they didn t have a very accurate way to observe the sky. This led them to make a large quadrant of a circle with a 19 foot radius! It took them over 20 men to build it! The quadrant was set so they could make observations through an open window. They also had several clocks all being used one after another to make the observations as precise as they possibly could. Then in 1570, after spending years in Germany with fellow astronomers, he returned home to

Vanishing Middle Class Essay Cherisse Diaz Professor Stewart ENC1101 11 July 2017 The Increase in Income and the Vanishing Middle class The majority of the the U.S. population identify themselves as being within the middle or working class. The socioeconomic group between the lower and upper classes. is much smaller than most think and is starting to decline. The large increase in income have reshaped the American middle class that most claim to be part of. Today s higher income of the American middle class family comes from the two parent income. This income is higher of those of past generations, however, over the past generation, the increase in income for the median earning family have not resulted in an improved lifestyle. The reason for life not improving for America s middle class is often misconstrued with over consumption or purchasing of unneeded items and services, but these activities are not the case for the middle class non improved quality of life. Revolving debt and the large increase in life s fixed expenses such as mortgage, health care, and child care, these factors are the main reasons for the increase in income for middle class families not resulting in an improved life quality. In the article the Vanishing Middle Class , the author Elizabeth Warren explains why and how America s middle class is facing many hardships today. These hardships are often linked to overconsumption of material items such as technology, home appliances and clothing. However, in Warren s article

Anna Hope is an English actress and writer. She is from Manchester and was educated at Wadham College, Oxford. The short story is fiction, but could still take place in real life. The main theme is identity formation. Analysis: The story is written with a 3rd persons view: Ellie reaches a hand out [...] She takes the glass, stumbles forward... The narrator therefor has an omniscient point of view, and knows everything about the main character, Ellie. Ellie is a lost teenager who lives her life on coke and other narcotics. She has some problems with her parents, and she blames them for everything: To whom? To what? To why? To God? To Mum? To Dad? Not then especially not them. It was their fault she was doing this bloody course in the first place. When she suddenly finds the stone she is reminded of her mothers love, and she starts to think about life and her parents. Especially her mothers love is a thing she realizes she has taken for granted. Ellie suddenly sees everything, life, in a new perspective: It is filled with people, and everyone, everyone Ellie sees has the same substance within them, around them, connecting them, looping between them in great bonds of love. The title A Gap of Sky is specifically chosen and also appears in the story itself: [...] a gap of sky to her right, an emptiness, a vacancy that she doesn t remember seeing before, something destroyed, or being built [...] In this beautifully written piece of the story, Ellie discovers she is missing something in her life. Conclusion Ellie er blevet voksen og opdager, at hun har taget

With new technology such as satellites systems, low altitude photography and side looking radar scientists now figure that the world is losing about twenty million hectares of tropical forests annually. It has been suggested that the high deforestation rates are caused partially by the fact that the new surveys are more accurate and thus reveal old deforestation rates that were miscalculated with previous methods (Westoby, 202). At first there was concern only among foresters about deforestation but now the public has created organizations such as Green Peace to facilitate increased awareness and reduce deforestation. The Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) has worked mainly within the forestry community to find new and better ways to manage the forests. In 1985 there was the introduction of the Tropical Forestry Action Plan or T.F.A.P. This plan involved the F.A.O, United Nations, World Bank, other developmental agencies, and several other multi national government organizations; together they developed a new strategy. More than sixty countries have decided to prepare national forestry action plans to manage their forests (Gallant, 381). Tropical deforestation has various direct causes: permanent conversion of forests to agricultural land, logging, demand for fuel wood, forest fires and drought. Slash and burn clearing is the single greatest cause of tropical rain forest destruction world wide. Air

  • 36. Fear As The Dominant Theme In The Chrysalids By John Wyndham Fear as the Dominant Theme. Every single person in this world fears something, and there is magnificent amount of different types of fear that people know of. Each type of fear has a different name. For example, fear of change is called metathesiophobia, and fear of darkness is called Achluophobia. Fear can be not only a phobia but in a novel it can be represented as theme. One of the examples of a novel that has a lot of fear in it is The Chrysalids by John Wyndham which took place in the future, years after a nuclear holocaust has devastated large areas of the world. In that novel Wyndham explores many themes throughout the text, the main one being fear. The existence of fear in this novel is a critical factor in the unfolding of the plot. Most of the problems that occurred in John Wyndham s tale happen because of fear. Overall, this is shown through everyone s fear of being different, fear helped to develop Petra s character, and by everyone thinking that if a baby was born as a blasphemy, the women is always the one who is responsible for that, but never the man. In places like Waknuk people are terrified of being different in anyway in the Image of God. To begin, David, who is the son of Joseph Strorm, is praying in the church for dead Aunt Harriet and he is overwhelmed by what will happen to him if someone figures out that he is different. Please, please, God, let me be like other people. I don t want to be different. Won t you make it so that when I wake up in the morning I ll be just like everyone else, please, God, please! (Wyndham 76). This quote tells the reader that even David is scared of being different. His fear was caused by Aunt Harriet s death because of her child s small deviation. He finally comes to the understanding of how much trouble he can get into because of his own deviation. Another example of people fearing the difference is shown in the beginning of this novel when David explains that children who do not behave well are frightened by their parents with the Fringes people. In my father s childhood mothers used to quieten and awe troublesome infants by threatening: Be good now, or I ll fetch Old Maggie from the Fringes to you. She s got four eyes to watch you with, and four

The discovery of which we make on defining, proving, and supporting scientific and theoretical issues is a reflection of how far we have come on particular issues of study. this can be defined as changes that take place as a result of growth in the thinking of mankind resulting from one s capability to think, experience, reasoning judgement and ability to conceptualize. This helps humankind to progress in different aspects of life and make advancements on daily basis in relation to his life. Three main subject leads toward Intellectual Progress of mankind, philosophies, ideologies, and theories which this paper examines as related themes that often intersect in educational ideas (Gutek, 2004). It is not surprising, then, that the question Is philosophy progressive? is hardly ever raised. From one viewpoint, it offers quirky perspectives that might be excessively unique, making

At about the same time the Scotsman John Logie Baird used the telephone net to transmit pictures from London to Glasgow and invented cable TV. This new transmitting method improved the quality of reception and even live transmission was possible (cf. Plake 2004:15). In 1940 there were already twenty seven TV stations operating in the United States, but during the second World War the development of the television market slowed down. The increasing lack of money and staff resulted in the shutdown of several TV stations and also the sale of TV sets went down. But after the war the economy recovered and an enormous television boom followed. In 1951 first colour TV sets were placed on the market and in 1960 there were already more than five hundred TV programs and 95% of them belonged to three major networks: NBC, CBS and ABC. Many local TV stations which tried to remain independent, were finally edged out of the TV market (cf. Plake 2004:18ff). And for another example, the Native corporation system was set up in a way, that it safeguarded the land and cash settlement, so it would profit future generations of Alaska Natives and nonnatives as well. Nevertheless, ANCSA and the Native corporation system have had a negative impact as well. Such as, ANCSA was not seen as a good deal for all the Alaskan Natives. I believe life is way too short to take for granted. There are all sorts of people in this world who most definitely take their lives for granted. I think that they should just focus on one day at a time and not plan too far in the future because they do not know what is going to happen in the next minute. The main individual who taught me not to take my life for granted was my Aunt Rita, who passed away from small cell lung cancerwhen I was ten. Although it might not always feel like it, life is ridiculously short, it probably would not mean much, or be worth much if it lasted forever, because it s so short, with the limited time that you have, I recommend creating something worthwhile, and if you dare, something amazing. I believe that people are supposed to love the life that God has given them because at any moment it can change dramatically right before their eyes and be changed for the rest of their life. No one knows the exact feeling of life being too short, but some people have an idea of what it feels like. Some people find out what life being too short feels like and they don t figure this out until they have experienced something that is as terrible as this. My life just happened to change when I was about ten years old, my sister, nana, and papaw, and I went on our first vacation to Canada. As we started our journey and about 50 miles in, we got a life changing call from my mom. My aunt did not have much longer to live, and they said she wanted my nana there. So we rushed to the hospital where we went to her room. There she laid in a hospital bed, she was happy that we made it, but she knew her time was coming. She called my papaw over and told him go take those kids on their vacation, she did not want to ruin our vacation. So after a long night of thinking my sister and my papaw and I headed out, while my nana stayed with her sister. Later that night when we were all snuggled in our beds, we got a heart wrenching call. My aunt had passed away, but she said she wanted us to keep going for her, because she loved to travel. On the long car ride home,

College women are constantly bombarded with images of the perfect body that negatively affects their self esteem. The perfect body is usually classified as the hourglass figure, which means they have a small waist, big but and big breast. Majority of women don t have the hourglass figure or they don t look like models, so women are constantly criticizing their bodies. God Gold And Glory Essay God, Gold and Glory, these were the three G s that people had once given everything up for, countless wars either to be declared as the strongest or the richest, or maybe these wars were just to please the malevolent gods that everyone had worshipped. The year was 1492 and people around this time were still trying to obtain these G s in any manner physically obtainable. However it was due to Christopher Columbuss journey across an ocean rarely explored that we can say a new world was beginning. At seven o clock on a Sunday evening, the small salad shop was a place filled with almost all females. Even though I was anticipating this result, I still found it hard to believe that this restaurant was always occupied by entirely women. Upon asking an employee about whether my observation was something that occurs often, he responded, we are Sweetgreen. Of course, we get a lot more girls than guys. The fact that Sweetgreen attracts girls must have something to do with how it brands itself. After having trouble finding any advertisements for the brand online, I concluded that the marketing that attracts these females must be in the store. After going back to Sweetgreen, I came to the conclusion that whether intentional or not, Sweetgreen is marketed toward the stereotypical femaleas seen through its core values, decor, menu options, and service. Sweetgreen utilizes the fact that the mass media encourages women to obtain a thin figure, as discussed by Susan Bordo in Hunger as Ideology, in order to sell their product. Bordo explains that advertisements teach women to view long, slim legs, a flat stomach, and a firm rear end as essentials of female beauty. (102) Because advertisers constantly convince women that achieving a thin figure is important, women eventually became self critical of their bodies. This causes women to push toward this ideal image by losing weight by eating fewer calories. By

This is demonstrated by the abundance of the qualifier evil for Hyde: sold a slave to my original evil , was pure evil , my evil or one was wholly evil . Although Dr Jekyll also makes clear this opposition The evil side of my nature (...) was less robust and less developed than the good which I had just deposed meaning the good being Dr Jekyll and the evil or bad being Hyde, Even as good shone upon the countenance...
